PASCO SHERIFF’S OFFICE COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER

November 2011

The Pasco Sheriff’s Office is providing citizens a new way to dispose of unwanted medications by placing several pill drop boxes in agency buildings. Pinellas and Pasco counties led the state in pre-

scription drug overdose deaths last year, with 207 and 142 deaths, respectively. Don’t let your pre-scription drugs become a target for theft or abuse. When they become expired or you no longer

need them, bring them to us for destruction. Citizens can simply drop off unwanted medication, no questions asked. No personal information is needed or will be requested. We will then properly

dispose of the medications. This prevents unwanted prescription drugs from being flushed away or thrown in the garbage, which can end up in the county dump and in our water supply.

Three new metal boxes are being placed in the Sheriff’s Offices road patrol district headquarters in Dade City (34609 State Road 52), New Port Richey (7432 Little Road), and Trinity (11530 Trin-

ity Boulevard).

What is accepted in the pill drop boxes:

Expired or unwanted prescriptions and medicine

Vitamins & Herbals

Veterinary medications

Over-the-counter medications Note: NO fluids or needles are accepted in the drop boxes!

Two of the drop boxes were paid for by the Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention and the third was awarded to the Pasco Sheriff’s Office by the National Association of Drug Diversion

Investigators for having the largest amount of medication collected during the last national pill drop on August 27.

Approximately 75 percent of the case load for our Vice and Narcotics detectives is related to pre-scription pill abuse. From people creating false prescriptions, to doctor-shopping, and the illegal

use and sales of these drugs, this problem is fueling multiple crimes in our society. It is affecting our families and the thus the next generation and the future of our communities. Our child pro-

tection investigators are burdened with the fallout these drugs cause in the resulting child abuse and child neglect cases.

Please help us fight this prescription pill epidemic by bringing us your unwanted medication for destruction. Too often these prescription drugs end up on the street through the burglaries of

homes and vehicles, and in turn are bought by individuals. By properly disposing of these drugs, you can help us reduce the damage they cause in the destruction of our families.

===========================================

Remember if you see a crime call 911 and give a good description of

the individuals/cars/etc. If you see something suspicious call the general dispatch number for

the Sheriff—844-7711.

REPORT ANYTHING THAT FEELS UNCOMFORTABLE OR LOOKS OUT

OF PLACE—IT IS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY!

DON’T TRY TO INTERVENE—CALL THE SHERIFF!!!

Do-it-Yourself Home/Business Security Audit

from the PSCD Web Page

When is the last time you checked around your home or business to make it more difficult to be victimized by a burglary? The Pasco Sheriff's Office encourages citizens to periodi-cally conduct a survey at their home or business to make sure you are doing everything

you can to prevent becoming a victim. In that effort, the Pasco Sheriff's Office has released

a do-it-yourself video that will give citizens tips on reducing the risk of being victimized by a burglary. Citizens are encouraged to review the video and download a home/business

security checklist that provides a number of tips on how to improve the safety and security in and around your home or business. Many of the tips are common sense but we encour-age citizens to look at the video. Homeowners and renters alike can look at the material

from the comfort of their own home, on their own timetable and improve their own secu-rity. The PSO Home/Business Security Audit video can be seen at the Pasco Sheriff's Office

official YouTube® website.

We were honored at our last Neighborhood Crime Watch meeting, which was held on Thursday, Sept. 14, 2011, with guest speaker Cpl.Timothy Brock. Cpl. Brock has served 8 years with Pasco county Sher-iff Dept. He spoke on a new project that the dept introduced back in May called “COBRA”. They have 4 deputies on staff and the main focus was originally executed at the night hour and has had such great results that they have decided to expand it to the day time hours. He informed us that crime in our neighborhood has declined since this project started. He also stated that the reason that it is work-ing is the tips that our community has called in. Cpl Brock made mention of their web page: www.crimereport.com and that there is a link to email and report a crime anonymously. In addition, he gave us some statistics:

63 felonies, 32 misdemeanor arrests,15 warrants served,17 drug arrests, 132 traffic stops,26 citations and 122 warnings

NEWS FROM

CODE ENFORCEMENT/

NEIGHBORHOOD BEAUTIFICATION

COMMITTEE

Peter Lee, CHAIRMAN

October was my first month serving the Beacon Square Civic Association. I’d like to think it was

a month we can build upon. We solved several problems, and have taken action against several

more. It was a good start, but I do need your help if we are going to make real progress.

Some of us get involved in this endeavor out of pride in our neighborhood. Others might be

motivated to recapture the value many have lost in our properties in recent years. I am trying to

identify ways to motivate many more of our neighbors to get involved.

A few ideas that I am contemplating are prizes to the person(s) who report the highest number

of problem properties in any given month. If pride or increased property values are not ones cup

of tea, perhaps free dinners and/or other gift certificates might be of interest. I am open to and

welcome your ideas on this. We really do need more people engaged in this program!

In the October meeting I said that I don’t want this to be just about punishing our challenged

neighbors. I’d also like to be rewarding our good ones. I hope to get the Board to fund some

kind of “Yard of the Month” program. It’s fun to have a sign out front and a few goodies to rec-

ognize neighbors who make an extra effort. We can possibly include some sort of nominating

form in each monthly newsletter.

Another idea I am considering is the “Eyesore of the Month Award” I don’t imagine the recipi-

ent will allow us to keep a sign on their property, but a line or two in the monthly newsletter

might make it an award people would like to avoid. I suspect several banks and mortgage com-

panies will be frequent award winners. It could make for fun conversation when you go into

your branch to do business!

In the October meeting, I challenged all in attendance to bring a friend or neighbor to the No-

vember meeting. All in the room seemed to agree to do so. I look forward to seeing all those

new faces on November 3rd, at 7:00pm. I also dared those in the room to make my fingers bleed

from typing up so many complaints. My fingers are fine, but you do have some time left before

the next meeting. I double-dare you!!

Finally, if you see Shirley Dresch or Joe Harrington in your travels, be sure to tell them “thank-

you”. They have been the most involved in getting problems corrected so far in October.

This committee is also working on neighborhood beautification. The median on Beacon

Square Drive is one of our projects. If you would like to volunteer for this project please

let Peter or Ken know.

We are also working on re-landscaping the front of the Civic. If you would like to help

please contact Joe or Ken. Donations towards the purchase of native plants and a new

palm tree would be greatly appreciated.
