This course is principally intended to develop the composition skills of students inEnglish language. To achieve this, the teacher will facilitate the students in discoveringtheir strengths and weaknesses in oral and written communication and provide trainingfor the enhancement of their basic skills.

When we say DSICIPLINE in this course, we mean to say ACADEMIC FIELD

or area of expertise or field of specialization.

Writing in the Disciplines deals with writing forms and practices within academicdisciplines meaning the different areas of specialization. The kinds of texts read andwritten by members of disciplines, the manner and situation in which such texts are readand written, and the ways in which they carry out disciplinary projects characteristicallyset disciplinary writing apart from other forms of writing. Moreover, disciplines differfrom one another in their writing practices, and local circumstances influence how thesetexts appear and how they are used in individual cases. Historically, disciplines havedeveloped specialized vocabularies, conventions, styles, genres, criteria of judgment, uses for texts, intertextual systems, as well as forums such as conferences and

journals. These writing practices, furthermore are embedded within the socialinstitutions, organizations, and relationships that comprise disciplinary communities.

An understanding of the varied kinds of literate practices and artifacts that are part ofdisciplinary life and the variables that influence these practices help us understand howdisciplines produce knowledge and provide guidance for the teaching and learning ofsuch writing.

To summarize that, Writing in the Discipline points out that different fields (or

areas) have their own set of writing styles, format and vocabulary, like in thefollowing disciplines:

    Medicine

    Agriculture

    Information Technology

    Psychology

    Humanities (the Arts)

    and so many other fields

    FOR STARTERS

Your facility with the English language will be

evaluated through the series of small tests that follow. Youranswers must be placed in the answer sheets.
