Dark days for Croydon Park homeownersFIrst homeowners rebecca and Dennis Thornton are concerned that they will be left in the dark if a new development application is approved.

In March this year, a Da in Georges river road that proposed six units plus retaining the existing heritage item was approved. Now, Mr and Mrs Thornton are angered at the news that the applicant has lodged a new Da for eight units, which would see an additional two being built.

according to a spokesman from Burwood Council, the Da is on exhibition until 3 May 2011.

Mrs Thornton believes that if the development goes ahead it would have a negative impact on her and her husbands quality of life.

The proposed two-storey construction is so close to our boundary that we would be deprived of sunlight in a huge portion of our garden for

would be in shadow from 9 am to 3 pm.This is totally unacceptable, she said. We

spend a lot of time in our garden, especially in the summer months, and we are about to commence renovations which would include a deck and landscaping so we can enjoy our garden and the sunlight further.

The quieter pace of life that made Croydon park a drawcard for the Thorntons could also be at risk, she added: The proposed development would significantly increase traffic congestion in the area, especially during morning and afternoon periods.

Mrs Thornton has already submitted a letter to Burwood Council and has met with some neighbours who have done the same. But if the development application gets the go-ahead, she sees only one solution for her and her husband and the house that was built by his great grandfather.

We would consider selling, she said.

also align to key strategic objectives highlighted in the Burwood2030 plan.

I congratulate these organisations on their successful submissions, and sincerely thank their staff and volunteers for their tireless efforts in providing a vast range of services and resources that indeed benefit our local community.

Burwoods cluster of restaurants, cafes and al fresco options is a unique and attractive feature of our municipality, and patrons deserve to enjoy their experience.

Unfortunately, in recent weeks, there appears to be a growing trend where what has started as a wonderful night out in the town Centre has been soured by an encounter of unruly behaviour.

I have received feedback from diners and restaurateurs, and experienced first-hand the unpleasantness of excessively loud vehicles

frequenting back and forth along Burwood Road, often at unsafe speeds, as well as large groups of people loitering and cars being parked illegally in this vicinity.

I raised this matter at last tuesdays Council Meeting, and Councillors endorsed my notion to call a meeting between myself, Burwood Police, Councils General Manager and Community safety officers to discuss how this situation can be addressed and improved.

I look forward to reporting back to you on the outcomes of this meeting in the coming weeks.

ChILDrENs and elderly services have been the major recipients in the recently announced 2012 Burwood Community services Grants program, which assists groups serving the community.

The grants aim to encourage community participation in the development and implemen-tation of community-based programs and projects that meet the needs of local residents, in addition to maximising access and enhancing existing resources.

Burwood mayor, Cr. John Faker awarded the successful applicants at a ceremony on tuesday, 24 april, speaking on the importance of community groups.

here in Burwood, were very fortunate to have a strong sense of community and a high level of support for our residents. This is maintained by the outstanding work of the community groups, their staff and volunteers, Mayor Faker said. I have a great deal of admiration for those who are committed and work tirelessly and selflessly to ensure residents are supported and assisted in their daily lives.

FOLLOWING council-owned property sales worth $34 million over the past twelve months, Burwood Council is set to deliver a balanced budget by July this year and are in the market to invest in commercial property with rental income returning to council.

Following the sale of the land at Conder street and Wynne avenue, Mayor John Faker has revealed that debts of $8million have now been retired and that $14million has been set aside for capital infrastructure for a range of projects including the new library, Wangal park, a new hall at Woodstock plus road-works, footpaths and road resurfacing.

We are debt-free and will have a balanced budget in July this year, the mayor said. an additional sum has been put aside to purchase commercial property, which will provide a rental income back to Council.

Currently 53% of Burwood

Councils income is derived through rates and domestic waste charges and the remainder via investment, grants and user charges.

Councils should no longer rely on rates as their prime revenue. Our seven-year goal is to purchase commercial property and have the rental income from those properties form 75% of our income, thus changing the reliance on rates as the major source. at between eight to ten per cent, we are looking at a return income to our rate payers from commercial property. This is money that can be used every year for new footpaths, roads, verge mowing, kerbs and gutters and so on, Mayor Faker explained.

The 2012/13 budget revenue is detailed at $36,586,655, with expenditure is budgeted at $38,738,825 with the greatest cost being employment at $15,926, 037 (41%).

In recent days, significant improvements have been made along Mitchell Street through to the intersection of Portland Street in the vicinity of the Enfield Aquatic Centre and Henley Park.

This work has included major road resurfacing and the installation of better drainage, as well as new kerbs, gutters and pedestrian ramps adjacent to the roundabout.

NO sOONEr had Canada Bay celebrated its official opening of its new headquarters when 14 local sEs Volunteers were called out following heavy rain.

Initially, the teams completed local requests for assistance in the Canada Bay area and then two of the teams moved on to the holroyd area to assist while the third remained and worked locally as more calls were received. Other volunteers remained at the headquarters to provide operational support.

The local team had completed all jobs by 11.30pm, while the two teams in holroyd worked through until the early hours of morning. The local headquarters

in regatta road, Five Dock remained operational until midnight. Of the eight local jobs, seven were leaking roof jobs and one a tree job. They were spread throughout the Canada Bay area from rhodes and Concord West to Five Dock and Drummoyne.

In overall charge of the Canada Bay response was Local Controller David Johnsun, who recently received his ten year-long service award from the Minister for police and Emergency services Michael Gallacher.

Memo Corp, which owns strathfield plaza, is the largest landowner in the area with concept plans showing two 15/16 storey towers on its site, where the current nine-storey plaza now stands.

JOhN MIChELL has taken his bicycle around the world and supplies bikes to Olympians, Ironmen, competitors, parents and children anyone who wants to ride, but he hasnt gone far from where he started riding as a teenager at ashfield Boys high.

his newly refurbished and spectacular ashfield Cycles on Liverpool road celebrates 34 years this month and 28 years in the same location. along with current hawaiian Iron Man Champion, Craig alexander, ashfield mayor, Cr Lyall Kennedy officially relaunched the iconic local business last month with declaring ashfield Cycles to be the best.

Cycling is a funny thing, the always cheerful John Michell told Burwood scene. It keeps coming back and is addictive. I started riding at school and mainly used to ride around the local area. Then I wanted to find out more about bikes. The quest for information just kept going and then I wanted to race bikes.

Whilst John modestly says he was just a club racer, he has ridden with the best including the man named as the greatest rider of all time, Belgian Eddie Merckx. Nicknamed The Cannibal, because of his insatiable desire to win, Eddie Merckx won everything there was in the 60s.

In January this year, I was able to go on a social ride with Eddie and there were only ten of us. It was one of the biggest thrills, John said. It was always my ambition to

ride in the tour de France, as it is for many club riders like me. Cycling is a sport you can do all your life and I have had some great opportunities to ride with people like Eddie Merckx and also with phil Liggett, (the legendary voice of cycling) when he was in australia for the tour Down under, John said.

tali GalleryIt was Dianne stevens passion for indigenous art that led to he r op e n i ng tali Gallery. 18 months later, she and husband, yhanni have been delighted to discover that locals and visitors alike share that passion too.

I think there is a lot we have never heard about which is so fascinating and extraordinary, she said. The art provides a story that gives people insights into what is a remarkable culture.

The rozelle-based gallery has attracted visitors from around the world. Ms stevens is pleased with the response.

Were doing very well, she said. We work very hard outside the gallery with special projects, like Indigenous scholarship exhibitions and have been involved with Newington College and International Grammar school.

Thats why she opened La Bocca Deli Caf in October last year. The Croydon park business prides itself on being like no other, both in terms of its location and product offering.

suGarplums & laCademie danCeIt was a lifetime love of children and dancing that led to Kristyn tindall opening sugarplums & Lacademie Dance in February last year.

The professional ballet dancer, who worked overseas for 10 years of her performing career, says that she wanted to run her own dance school since she was 12.

I have an affinity with children, she said.sugar plums started with only one child,

and now has 160 students. according to Ms tindall, numbers are expected to reach 250.

FOLLOWING the russian revolution in 1917, it is estimated that between 900,000 and two million people left, escaped or were exiled from their homeland as the socialist movement strengthened and remained in place until Glasnost was introduced by Mikhail Gorbachev in the second half of the 1980s, providing less censorship and greater freedom of information.

It has often been acknowledged that the custodians of traditional russian language, culture and even religious ceremonies were best kept intact by those who had fled from their homeland.

For homebush resident peter tatarinoff and his wife Kyra, preserving the russian language and culture has been a lifetime labour of love.

peter was born in Northern China after his parents had fled russia in the early 1920s and spent his early years in shanghai,

then Vietnam and France before arriving in australia in 1951. Over the last fifty years peter and Kyra have been involved in, or founded, societies and foundations, focussing on preserving russian culture. From creating choirs, russian folkloric dance groups and saturday morning language classes to co-founding the russian historical society in australia, their input has been profound.

Imagine peters surprise last October when he received a phone call from the russian Embassy in Canberra asking if he could go to Moscow the following week, at the invitation of russian president Dmitry Medvedev to receive The Order of Friendship - one of only five being awarded at Nijni Novgorod on the 400th anniversary of the conflict between russia and poland, which led to an uprising on November 4, 1612 and is now

russias Day of National unity (similar to australia Day).

The call from the russian Embassy came completely out of the blue, peter recalled. Did I have a russian passport they asked? I answered that, No I dont, I only hold an aussie passport and could I leave the following week? because the president has awarded me The Order of Friendship and he would like me to come to Moscow to receive it. It was such a shock.

the prestigious honour is not bestowed often and other recipients include opera legend, placido Domingo and former French president Francois Mitterrand.

the Order of Friendship is given to people who have a significant input into the level of cultural links with russia from within their own countries and for saving and preserving

russian language and culture, again within their own countries, peter translated from the russian document.

the formal and theatrical award ceremony in Nijni Novgorod saw the patriarch of russia (head of the russian Orthodox Church) enter first, followed by prime Minister Vladimir putin and finally president Medvedev, who presented the medals.

The way I feel is that this award is not just for myself, but for all people in australia who help keep the cultural links alive - and especially it is also for my wife, Kyra. During the award ceremony and then dinner, my hands were shaking and didnt stop until we got to dessert and I do like dessert, the quietly spoken peter recalled.

LOCaL ashfield student Victor yu from st patricks College strathfield, was selected to attend the university of sydneys science Gifted and talented Discover y program three-day workshop last month.

Victor joined 99 other talented science students in year 9 and 10 from around NsW, aCt and Queensland on campus at the university of sydney to do fun hands-on workshops and lectures in biology, chemistry and physics.

the university of sydneys science Gifted and talented Discovery program entrance exam was sat by 1,583 students from 94 schools, with only the top 10.8% of students invited to the workshop.

students get the chance to discover different areas of science and get involved with hands-on activities that they wouldnt normally cover in school through the university of sydneys Gifted and talented Discovery program, said Louise atkins, manager of school programs and undergraduate recruitment, Faculty of science.

all the activities are fun and the students love it.

the university of sydneys science Gifted and talented Discovery program has been running since 1996 and has had over 1,500 students participate since its inception.

as well as challenging talented science students with the activities, the program gives students an insight into studying science at university and as a possible career, Louise added.

the program runs twice a year for three days, in the april and July school holiday period.

thE FIrst week of May will see santa sabina eco leaders ensuring that all students maintain the Colleges commitment to all things green as Environment Week is celebrated.

From nude food - wrap-free lunches - to a daily dose of green facts, awareness raising activities will assist students to be mindful of their roles as stewards of our fragile planet.

tallies will be taken of the amount of waste that is recycled each day while on the primary school campus children from Kindergarten to year 5 will compete for the title of Kings and Queens of Green for the best class at paper recycling.

a new Winter Garden will be dug and planted on the secondary school campus following the success of the first garden which has seen flourishing herbs and delicious spinach flavouring lunch time

food stalls held by the student Enviro Committee. a low energy awareness afternoon will also be a feature of the week.

already this year santa sabina students have celebrated Earth hour, Clean up schools Day, while recycling occurs every week and tree planting is a feature of Outdoor Education Camps for students from years 4-9. In Concert will feature an exciting repertoire of choral, jazz and orchestral music, performed by the NsW Department of Education and Communities arts unitspremier music ensembles, the combined secondary schools Choir and a pre-concert talk with richard Gill, one of australias most pre-eminent and admired conductors and musical educators.

In Concert only the second of its kind takes place on Monday, 7 May at sydney town hall. The pre-concert talk commences at 6.15pm, followed by the concert at 7pm.

thE hIstOry and oral stories of the pan-hellenic soccer Club from 1957-1976 have finally been documented in a new book, the Giant Who Never awoke which was launched last month.

Written by Vasilis Vasilas, the book takes readers on a journey, to a period of time in which football was more than just a game. as the pan- hellenic soccer Club represented the hopes and aspirations of Greek

Migrants who wanted nothing more than to integrate themselves into the australian community.

the Giant Who Never awoke highlights the rise and fall of the pan-hellenic soccer Club and focuses on the humble beginnings, memorable victories, legendary players, passionate supporters and the financial difficulties that were experienced by committee members.

The book also consists of over ninety

interviews, one hundred photographs and several documents which shed light on the pan-hellenic era.

It was fittingly launched in april at the hellenic Club in the city. south sydney rabbitohs Chairman, Nicholas pappas was the main speaker on the night, whilst popular television personality and presenter John Mangos served as the Master of Ceremonies.
