    Works are now underway to make a section of the former Sunvale site which Brimbank City Council recently purchased available for community use. The new community open space will spread over more than half the area of the former Sunvale site.

    Council looks forward to working with the community to create something really special with extensive community consultation planned for later this year. The community consultation will help inform the design, use, and naming of the park.

    While Council doesnt take ownership of the park until early 2016, the tidy up is well underway and we hope to make the site presentable and accessible for community use in the coming months.

    This new open space is a great outcome and will build on the fantastic network of parks in Sunshine which have been developed through the implementation of the Creating Better Parks Strategy.

    Council has committed a further $1.3 million in the 2014-2015 budget for park improvements and upgrades around Brimbank.

    Council would also like to send a huge thank you to everyone that was involved in the National Tree Day planting on Sunday 27 July. A total of 1700 trees were planted in one day, it is great to see the community binding together to build a greener and healthier Brimbank. Last fi nancial year Council planted a total of 25,000 native trees.

    Council has also committed to planting at least 10,000 trees annually across Brimbank reserves for 10 years - as part of the Greening the West initiative.

    Get involved Temporary relocation of Sunshine Library and Customer Service Centre

    The relocation is taking place to make way for works on the $52 million Community and Civic Centre. The centre is estimated to be completed mid-2016.

    The Sunshine Customer Service Centre has moved to the Sunshine Municipal Offi ces, 6-18 Alexandra Avenue, Sunshine.

    The Sunshine Library has shut on Hampshire Road, and will reopen on Monday 11 August in McCracken Street, Sunshine. Book returns can be made at the Hampshire Road library site until the relocated library opens.

    Share a book during The Reading HourParents and caregivers are invited to come along to Deer Park, St Albans, Sunshine or Sydenham Library to share a brand new book with their children during The Reading Hour on Tuesday 19 August, from 6-7pm. The Reading Hour aims to promote and celebrate the joy of reading in all its forms.For the fi rst time, The Reading Hour falls during Childrens Book Week. At libraries, schools, businesses and homes, thousands of people around the country will be sharing a book together during this special hour.     Deer Park Library closing for a week

    Deer Park Library will be closing temporarily in August from Saturday 23 August to Sunday 31 August to enable building upgrades to take place. The library will reopen on Monday 1 September. The improvements will include an upgrade of the air conditioning; installation of an automatic door to assist parents with prams and community members with disabilities and much more. Books can still be returned through the Deer Park Library after-hours chute. Items can also be renewed and reserved online at brimbanklibraries.vic.gov.au

    Council has organised Victorian Equal Opportunity & Human Rights Commission to run an Understanding Equal Opportunity Obligations for Community Groups & Organisations session. This is open to Brimbank community groups and organisations.     Two fixed speed cameras on the Western Ring Road will soon be reactivated after being switched off for more than three years.

    The cameras, about 560 metres north of Ballarat Road, Ardeer, and 650 metres south of Ballarat Road in Deer Park, were turned off in February 2011 to allow a major road upgrade.

    Superintendent Kevin Sheridan, of the traffic camera office, warned drivers to obey the road signs or risk being fined.

    These two cameras were tested over a 27-day period and we are still seeing too many motorists travelling way too fast, he said.

    If you travel over the signed speed limit you be will be caught and you will be fined.

    Superintendent Sheridan said drivers should look out for variable speed limits along the Western Ring Road and comply with the speed displayed.

    Motorists need to understand the illuminated variable speed signs are not a guide; they are law, he said.

    Police spokeswoman Anita Brens said the presence of speed cameras significantly reduced road trauma and death.

    [Cameras] are one aspect of our overall enforcement approach, which is about keeping all road users safe on the road system.

    Dale Toskovski had a broad grin after being sworn in as a prison officer at a graduation ceremony at the Metropolitan Remand Centre last week.

    There are so many different avenues within a prison; theres security, event management, the dog squad, he says.

    The Altona Meadows resident says his new profession is ideal as it will allow him to pursue two areas that interest him: law enforcement and animals.

    Mr Toskovski bathed dogs to pay the bills while he studied for an advanced diploma of justice at RMIT University.

    A former lecturer and Pentridge prison warden inspired Mr Toskovski, 23, to join the police force, but a recent Corrections Victoria radio advertisement motivated him to consider working in one of Victorias prisons.

    He was one of 30 new prison recruits to be sworn in at the remand centre in Ravenhall last Tuesday and one of 300 recruits who have graduated across Victorias prison system this year.

    The Ravenhall centre is undergoing a 200-bed expansion, with the first 100 beds to open in the next few months.

    Corrections Victoria is also expanding its workforce and began a recruitment drive on June 29.

    The Metropolitan Remand Centres general manager, Len Norman, said Corrections

    Victoria was recruiting to fill 750 new prison and community corrections officer roles over the next 12 months.

    There has been very strong interest from potential recruits across the state, including a record number of attendees (260) at a recent corrections careers information session in the Geelong area, Mr Norman said.

    He said almost 1500 new prison beds had opened across Victoria since the start of 2011,

    with more than 2600 still to open, including a new medium-security prison at Ravenhall in Melbournes west.

    New prison officer Leonie Uit den Bogaard, also 23, said shes looking forward to a career she can be proud of.

    Asked whether shes concerned about being a female in a male-dominated profession, she indicates quickly that she isnt. Its not as intimidating as you think.

    August is here, and hopefully the worst of winter is behind us. Its been a real challenge getting out of bed on those chilly mornings and I, for one, am looking forward to spring.

    Despite the wintery weather, Council has been busy planning and delivering some fabulous initiatives for the community, like our exciting Community Engagement Expos that kicked off in Diggers Rest last week.The Expos give residents the chance to have their say on key local issues, including transport, safety, suburb naming and more. So, if you missed the Diggers Rest Expo, be sure to get along to one of the others being held throughout the City over the next couple of weeks.     I know that I speak for all of Council when I express my deep sadness following the devastating air disaster in Ukraine. Many of our residents are struggling with the loss of the van den Hende family, beloved members of the Eynesbury community.

    It was heart warming to see so many people come together at the recent memorial, supporting each other in their grief, and paying respect to a family that had such a profound impact on their neighbours, school friends and team mates. They will be missed by those who knew them, and our thoughts are with their family and friends, both locally and abroad. A National Day of Mourning has been declared for Thursday tragedy, with a memorial service to take place in Melbourne.

    To help manage exceptional levels of population growth, Melton City Council is proposing to establish 11 new suburbs across the municipality. In planning for this growth, most existing suburbs will remain unaffected, but some suburbs will have their boundaries moved and name changed. Residents who are directly affected will receive a letter from Council and information brochures will be widely available. Together with a committee, made up of local residents, representatives of indigenous, history and business groups and Councillors, we have developed a shortlist of suburb names and over the next month or so, Council is asking residents to vote for their favourite names. I encourage everyone to get involved, you can have your say by providing feedback via mail, online or by attending a community forum. You can vote for your favourite suburb names, propose new (eligible) suburb names or comment on proposed boundaries.
