NEWS ITEMSFrom Norman Couchman and Margaret.

At the Circuit meeting held at the Swaffham church on Thursday 16th September, our senior Circuit Steward, Nelson Tubby, took the wind out of my sails by making a presentation to me by way of thanks for all that I had done during my time as Treasurer of the Fakenham, Wells & Holt Circuit. In his comments he became ‘confused’ and presented to me some flowers and a small white envelope to Margaret. The flowers have now died whilst Margaret has put to good use the contents of the envelope by buying a sat nav to help improve (at long last) her navigation skills. We sincerely thank all our friends in the old FWH Circuit for their generosity Margaret & Norman

From the Editor’s desk I have just finished this my 3rd edition and after the typ- ing, moving boxes and double checking, I feel like saying “Phew!” This was more than a

few day’s work! I have been pushing ‘Word’ to its limits and trying to remember how I did it last time. On top of this, CN has many more ‘Events’ than FWH did and I have not had enough space this time. However, when you have sent details, I have tried to print them in a block. But don’t forget; if you don’t send your details, I can’t print them. Please remember. Send dates and news for up to 3rd April to me by Sunday 16th January at [email protected] or at my address in the Plan. Because of the amount of work, I am afraid 17th January will be too late.Happy Christmas. Brian Lawrence

90 year old Pillar of the Church 1Charlie Greves was a former FHW circuit steward and he celebrated his 90th birthday on Monday 22nd November after a 4pm birthday tea on the Sunday before at Hindringham chapel, followed by evening worship led by Rev Andrew King. Charlie and Edna have been life long members of the chapel, having married there 64 years ago on 11th December. He is a member of the Ciruit and Guild Choirs and leads singing at chapel services.

90 year old Pillar of the Church 2On Saturday 23rd October, Rev Andrew King presented a 90th Birthday card to Freda Burley who is at Cranmer House in Fakenham. She has only recently resigned as treasurer of Wells & Wighton and until 2008 was FHW Circuit Treasurer for about 24 years, after retiring from Barclay Bank's head office. For those who don't know Freda, due to illness she had to have one leg amputated a while ago and she is due to lose her other leg soon. She will then move to a care home in Wells. As always, she was keen to hear about the life of the new Circuit. If we can do as well as them when we are 90!!

A letter seen in the EDP in OctoberLittle Cressingham Villagers reveal Norfolk’s past. One word, FANTASTIC. I come from Great Cressingham and attended this weekend’s Tribute event. It was really breathtaking that these two women who are pillars of the local community could pull together so much information. There was a real buzz, everyone was smiling and laughing. It was truly the most informative exhibition I have ever attended. Hats off to Mrs Rutterford and friends. Ben Whittred.Hats of to Emily from us too. B.L.

From WalsinghamSylvia and I would once again like to express our sincere thanks to those dear friends of Walsingham for assisting us with our Open Day rota from June to October. They gave their time as often as possible so that visitors to Walsingham could share in our Methodist heritage and witness, which we hope we can continue next year. Thank you once again.Sylvia & Tommy Seaman.

Circuit Minister’s Letter

Haere Mai E Hehu(Welcome, or, Come, Jesus)

Matthew, in his Gospel (Ch.2) tells us in legendary form, that Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea and that soon after some men who studied the stars (variously described as astrologers, magi, and wise men), followed a star until it stopped over a house where the babe Jesus lay. They offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.Luke (also Ch. C2) tells another story of similar form. In his version Jesus was

born in a stable in Bethlehem, that shepherds working close by were told by an angel of the birth of Jesus, and that they would find him in a manger; and so it was. These two stories are there to reinforce who Jesus was in the hearts and minds of early Christians. The same stories of Jesus, and his teachings impacted on the hearts and minds of our forebears here when they were brought to England, as I understand it, by two influences; the Celtic influence from the north west, and the Roman Catholic influence from the south east (associated with the Roman occupation) and the installation of Augustus as the first Archbishop of Canterbury in 597.The same stories of Jesus and his teachings were brought to Maori in my country, Aotearoa New Zealand, in the 19th Century, by The London Missionary Society on behalf of the Anglican Church and Wesleyan Missionaries; and also French Catholic Missionaries. As a result of Anglican and Wesleyan missionary influence, a Treaty between the British Crown under Queen Victoria and various Maori tribes, allowed for British subjects to settle in Aotearoa-New Zealand. Subsequently French Catholic Missionaries were replaced by Irish Catholic Missionaries. As a result of Missionary activity the stories and teachings were accepted into the hearts and minds of Maori, and as a result of the Treaty of Waitangi, “Settler Christians” and others from the U.K. began to emigrate to N.Z.Since those times the Christmas story has been celebrated in mid summer in Aotearoa New Zealand each year. So, in the context of our day, with thanksgiving, we continue to celebrate the impact of the values and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth on our hearts and minds. A Blessed Advent and Christmas Season to you all.(Rev)Brian R.J. Eagle

Education for Ministry www.norwich.anglican.org/training/lay/links/shtml No. This is not just for ministers. This programme aims to strengthen lay people in the challenges and ways of living out their faith. It offers a unique mix of academic study, theological reflection and fellow-ship, building and growing over its four year duration. There are no exams or assessments. There are no books to buy. The only problem is that it needs a minimum membership of six plus a mentor. Douglas Harrison is very keen. Any CNCN Readers interested, please contact Douglas or Rev Andrew King.

Wendling to be the first Eco-Church in the Circuit.Wendling Methodist Church is working towards becoming an Eco-congregation. The initial audit has been taken, we have registered and we are on our way to applying for the first part of the Award. To be an Eco-congregation the criteria involves the building, the worship and the influence in the community. The building has double glazed windows and low-energy light bulbs are being fitted. The heating system is thermostatically controlled. In worship, the minister, Rev. Brian Eagle always makes reference to the needs of the planet and the environment in his prayers and often makes a direct reference in other parts of the worship,We hope to soon have a suitable garden/ wildlife area in the grounds, which will be available to those who wish for a quiet place to sit.For many years there has been a bin for the recycling of newspaper at the side of the church. While fundraising was the original motive, it is now part of our eco-friendly quest. Further to recycling, some members of the congregation are making shopping bags (strong and good quality) from curtain* weight material – these are available for £2.50 per bag.* the curtain material is recycled from the drawers and cupboards where things are stored – “to come in handy”, and so will not end up in landfill. For further information about any aspect of this report, ask Rev. Liz Jolly (number on the plan)

-------------------------------Amnesty International Greetings Card Campaign:Every year at this time, Amnesty International publishes detailed information about people around the world who are in prison in dreadful conditions and often tortured, solely because of their beliefs or political opinions, or because they have made peaceful protests on behalf of other sufferers from brutal regimes. Amnesty asks us to send greeting cards to these victims , to tell them that they are not forgotten and to bring them some cheer and hope. This is a small and easy act of kindness in accord with Jesus’s teaching, Matthew 25 v39-40.Further full details from www.amnesty.org.uk/gcc or from Andrew Durrant. 01362 858033.

From the Circuit Treasurer. The financial result from the Thursford Songs of Praise this year was a magnificent £2,233.88p, after the deduction of expenses from a total collection of £2,901.70p. Thank you to all who made this event such a success. A cheque for £1,000 has been sent to MRDF in support of their continuing work following the Pakistan emergency. In support of a number of recent District initiatives, the Circuit Leadership Team has approved a series of guidelines offering financial assistance to lay people undertaking approved training or development courses. A proposal will be brought to the next Circuit Meeting for its approval as a Circuit Policy, but in the meantime the main points are:- up to one third of the cost may be granted, enabling matching funding from the District- an individual may normally receive one grant during a Connexional year- after training, the individual is expected to share newly acquired knowledge within the Circuit.Potential applicants should first contact Reverend Andrew King.

When we renew our Covenant with God, we pray: “I am no longer my own but yours, Put me to what you will, Rank me with whom you will . . “How far will we get into 2011 before we say to God again, “No, I do not want to serve coffee, I haven’t time to give to quiet prayer, I don’t like working with that person?” B.L.

Two young boys were spending the night at their grandparents’ house, the week before Christmas. At bedtime, as the two boys knelt beside their beds to say their prayers, the younger one began praying at the top of his voice, “I pray for a new bicycle! I pray for a new Nintendo! I pray for a new laptop!” The older brother leaned over, nudged the younger boy and said, “Why are you shouting your prayers? God isn’t deaf.” “No,” replied the little brother, “but Grandma is.”
