    Assessment & Qualification

Assessment Each unit of your programme is clearly stated by BTEC in terms of:

    learning outcomes

    content

grading criteria All assessments for this qualification are coursework based and there are no final examinations. However, strict conditions apply to the award of assessment grades by your teachers and BTEC checks the quality and grading of assessment activities.

School Based Assessment You must provide evidence to demonstrate that you have acquired the knowledge and skills set out in the learning outcomes. Your teachers will provide you with assessment opportunities to do this in the form of assignments or other types of coursework. All assessments activities have the following common features: 1. Each assessment is checked for detail and accuracy before it is issued to you 2. Each assessment activity is issued to you with:

a standard front sheet identifying the unit, module outcome, and grading criteria covered by the assessment

    an assessment feedback sheet

a statement of assessment tasks and identification of appropriate learning resources

    a set deadline for submission

a requirement you to confirm that the evidence you submit is your own work 3. Assessments grades are internally verified To prevent overload with several teachers setting assessments at the same time, the teaching team have devised an assessment schedule, which distributes the allocation of tasks evenly throughout the year. When you are given an assessment you will be told the deadline date for its completion – it is essential you keep to this deadline. If you are unable to do so due to unforeseen circumstances you must inform your unit teacher immediately. In exceptional circumstances, he/she may be able to offer an extended deadline.

Internal Verification Your teacher grades unit assessments and his/her grading decisions are checked by a second assessor (this is called Internal Verification). Internal Verification is the means by which the school ensures consistency in grading assessments. Once Internal Verification of the assessments has taken place, you will receive a grade and feedback on your assessment performance.

Referral of an Assessment At times it may be appropriate for Lead Internal Verifiers (LIV) to authorise one opportunity for a leaner to resubmit evidence to meet assessment criteria targeted by an assignment. When can a LIV authorise a resubmission? The LIV can only authorise a resubmission if all of the following conditions are met: 1. The learner has met the initial deadline set in the assignment, or has met an agreed deadline extension 2. The assessor judges that the learner will be able to provide improved evidence without further guidance 3. The assessor has authenticated the evidence submitted for assessment and the evidence is accompanied by a signed and dated declaration of authenticity by the learner

Independent study & other skills You are expected to complete the part of your work in the classroom during your lessons. It will, however, be necessary to complete work as independent study. This might during your study periods or at home. Independent study may also include such things as research, completing assignments and preparing presentations

Where can you get help? The BTEC Co-ordinator and your teachers are available to help you with any queries or concerns you may have about any aspect of your BTEC qualification.

Cheating/Plagiarism The work you submit for assessment must be your own and you are required to sign the box on the assessment front sheet to confirm that this is the case. If you use information word for word from an information source you must clearly show that you have done so by quoting a reference for the source in a bibliography. Where plagiarism is identified the assessment evidence is rendered invalid.

External Verification BTEC conducts a form of external assessment: National Standards Sampling The assessment activities for specific units are checked

by BTEC to ensure that the grades awarded by your teachers conform to the required standard for the qualification you are studying.

This form of external moderation is robust and replaces the requirement within this qualification for a final external examination. At this point your grade is now confirmed by the Standards Verifier and is ‘released’.

    Tracking your progress

Your programme leader and tutors will carefully monitor your progress on the course. They will give you continuous guidance through reviewing your work in a written and oral format and how many points you have acquired and what you need to do to achieve the next grade up. To calculate your current points total use the following formula:

    Points x Unit Credit Value

Achieving the Qualification You will achieve your qualification when you have satisfactorily completed all 12 units of the course. To do this, you must satisfy all of the Pass grading criteria for each unit. To gain a Merit for the unit, you must satisfy the entire Pass and Merit grading criteria for that unit. To gain a Distinction you must meet all of the Pass, Merit and Distinction grading criteria for that unit.

Certification If for whatever reason you are unable to continue on the course at the school and have to leave, you can and should claim certification for any completed units that have been externally verified. These units can then be transferred to another school should you continue with the programme elsewhere, or can act as standalone certificates of your achievement.

Appeals Procedure If you do not agree with the grade you have been awarded by your teacher, you can follow the following procedure to appeal the grading decision:

  • 12

UCAS Points Equivalent Your qualification is roughly equivalent to 2 A Levels; the table below explains how your BTEC grade equates to A Level grades and UCAS tariff points.
