    How to annotate your work

WALT: How to annotate your work Full composition

You must explain in detail, how and why you chose your starting ideas, what you then did to develop them and how you then composed a fullcomposition

Make sure you include these 3 headings when annotating your work:1. Starting Ideas

    2. Development of ideas

    3. Full composition

Use print screens when annotating your work. The more detailed yourexplanation, the higher your grade is likely to be. You can annotate yourwork in PowerPoint or Word

Remember to mention the overall structure and any FX you have used.

    Starting Ideas:

Here are my starting ideas. I

    chose a piano loop called

    moody piano, a guitar loop

called milk&sugar and 2vocal samples Yeah and

    Everybody. These ideas are

    used in the introduction. I

    really liked the piano sample

as it had reverb on it already

and was in a minor key socreated a tense atmosphere.

    I wanted to

    use panning in

    my piece so i

    chose samples

    with both L

    and R. Thiswould ensure

    that when the

    track was

    played it

    would move

    from the left

    to rightspeakers.

    Development:To develop my initial

    starting samples i created a

    piece with the structure

    intro, A, B, A. This allowed

    me to develop the samples

    used at the start.

    Development: section A.

    I continued to use my

    starting samples, moody

    piano and guitar. I altered

the texture my adding adrum loop that sounded

    like Brazilian bongos. I

looped this until bar 30. i

    layered in with 2 more

    drum loops, bob loopy and

burning. This created athicker and more

    interesting texture

    underneath the melodic

    loops

    To create interest i added

    different timbres at bar 13

    and bar 17. i chose a special

    FX that cut through the

    texture and keep the

    listener interested.

I continued to loop all my

    starting samples and add

different guitar loops. At bar 34

i added a wahwah. I chose thissample as it was higher in pitch

    that milk&sugar guitar loop. I

continued to pan this sample to

    it would move from one

    speaker to the next.

As section B approaches, i added a snare roll. This is to

build excitement and tension. I also add a saxophonesample. This adds a new timbre into the mix and gives

the listener, a hint that a new section is coming.

    Full composition:

    Section B begins at bar 50 [1

minute 40]. This is a drop out

    section which add a contrasting

texture in the music. I add new

    samples pianoman and funky

piano. I remove all bass and

    drums. I bring back the

    saxophone sample used at the

end of section B. I continue to

loop these samples until bar 70.

    i also add panning.

I bring back section A at bar 70. This continues until bar

120 [2 mins 50]. By using ternary form structure, developing, repeating and adding new samples, a full

    composition has been created.

Finally, i used the mixing desk to

    finalise panning and dynamics. I

altered the bass line on channel

6 because i thought it sounded

too loud in the mix. I also

    panned the sax sample slightly

    to the left.
