6.0 WORKING DRAWING
To provide information to estimators/ contractors and other concerned persons
Draftsman should place himself in the place of these persons
Realize the importance of drawings with correct dimensions and clear notes
IS:962 – 1989 specifies the code of practice for architectural and building drawings
It lay downs recommendations for sizes and layouts of
drawings Methods of projections Sectioning and sectional
views Sizes of lettering Dimensioning Abbreviations Symbols used in bldg dwg
6.0 WORKING DRAWING
LINES: All lines in dwg have
significance Else they have no reason
for being on dwg Should be dense, clean
and black Visible outline : full line,
outstanding in appearance, (thickness varies with its purpose, 0.60, 0.80, 1.00 or 1.30mm)
Centre line : should project beyond
outline Alternate long and short
lines, closely and evenly Proportion: 6:1 to 4:1
Hidden line : Shows hidden/interior/
work to be removed Short dashes closely and
evenly spaced Used to show various lines
of roof such as ridge, loft, chajja etc

Break line: To show a break of continuity Short break : free hand line Long break : ruled line, free
hand zig-zag Section line :
thick long dash and two short dashes
Lettered at ends
DIMENSIONS : Nothing to do with scale Should represent actual size
of structure Dimension figure shall be
placed at center
Frame structure : column center dim
Load bearing structure : rough unfinished wall faces
Line up all dimensions to draw/write/read quickly
Units : ‘meter’ or ‘millimeter” If in meters, write ‘m’ If in millimeters, do not write
‘mm’ Give a note “all dimensions
are in mm”

Dimension line : Thin full line Placed outside the figure Placement shall be easy to
read Extension lines : Light or thin lines Drawn from extremities of
feature requiring dimension Should not touch feature Should start from a
distance of 2mm Extend to about 4mm
beyond dimension line
Arrow heads or Dots : Used to terminate dim line Length = 4 * depth Space should be filled If dots are used, they shall
be placed at intersection of extension and dim line
Leaders (pointer lines) : Used where it is not
possible to write note and dimension figure near feature
Lines drawn from notes to show where they are applied
Thin straight lines

3,4,5 and 6 mm Notes, schedule,
materials dimensions : 2,3,4 and 5 mm
