While you’re waiting for takeoff, the Burlington International Airport aims to make your stay a pleasant one. Whether you’re a frequent flyer or brand new to the facility, please have a look around and enjoy its amenities and services, including:

• Food vendors. In the north and south terminals, locally owned Skinny Pancake serves up handmade crêpes filled with farm-fresh ingredients, as well as craft beer, wine and liquor. On the first floor near check-in, the Chubby Muffin sells baked goods and coffee drinks.

• A yoga room. On the second floor, this calm and cozy space offers passengers a chance to stretch, medi-tate or just chill out before a flight.

• Breastfeeding rooms. New mothers can spend private time with their babies in the “pod” in the north terminal or in a Mamava-supported pre-security room.

• Charging stations and free Wi-Fi. Passengers can find dozens of outlets throughout the airport and hook up to its new “Purple Wi-Fi” fiber-optic network, which is faster than ever before.

• Local art. To make the airport more beautiful, local nonprofit Burlington City Arts curates three exhibits of work by Vermont artists. See page 29 of this issue for locations and details of current artworks.

You’ll benefit from two new developments at the airport, even if you can’t see them:

• Solar panels. About 1,000 newly installed solar panels on the roof of the north parking garage add to the airport’s eco-friendly aesthetic. The power generated goes back into the local energy grid.

• High security. One hundred additional video cameras and new access controls were installed in late November to make the airport even safer for passengers and staff.

• Restauration. • Salles d’allaitement. Les nouvelles mamans peuvent passer du temps avec leurs nourrissons dans la « station » du terminal nord ou la salle Mamava avant la sécurité.

• Bornes de recharge et Wi-Fi gratuit. Les passagers peuvent trouver des dizaines de prises de courant dans l’aéroport pour recharger leur appareil et se connecter au nouveau réseau « Purple » à fibres optiques, plus rapide que jamais.

• Art local. Afin d’égayer encore davantage notre mag-nifique aéroport, l’organisme sans but lucratif local Burlington City Arts organise trois expositions mettant en valeur le travail d’artistes du Vermont. Rendez-vous à la page 29 du présent numéro pour en apprendre davantage sur les expositions en cours.

En outre, deux nouveautés ont fait leur apparition à l’aéroport, même si vous ne pouvez pas les voir :

• Panneaux solaires. Environ 1 000 nouveaux panneaux solaires ont été installés sur le toit du garage nord et con-tribuent à l’esthétique écologique de l’aéroport. L’énergie ainsi créée est acheminée au réseau électrique local.

• Haute sécurité. Une centaine de caméras vidéo supplé-mentaires et de nouveaux contrôles d’accès ont été installés à la fin de novembre pour renforcer la sécurité des passagers et du personnel.

K issing the border of Canada and stretch-ing more than 1.3 million acres across the state’s farthest-fl ung farms, fi elds and

forests, northeastern Vermont — aka the Northeast Kingdom — really heats up when the snow falls. That’s when winter’s whiteout turns the regal hills and mountain peaks otherworldly.

Many fi nd their keys to the Kingdom at Jay Peak, a 3,862-foot summit an hour and a half drive from Burlington, and two hours from Montréal. From there, it’s just a hop, skip and jump to the region’s Québécois-infl uenced cuisine, world-class perform-ing arts and o� -the-beaten-track sporting spots.

From the squeals of the Sherburne Express lift cranking up Burke Mountain to the whoops and hollers of cross-country skiers on the Kingdom Trails, it’s hard to stay quiet about the royal fl ush of recreational opportunities — indoors and out — in the Northeast Kingdom.

Situé dans le nord-est du Vermont, le long de la frontière avec le Canada, le Northeast Kingdom prend vie lorsque la neige com-

mence à tomber. L’hiver, dans cette région qui s’étend sur plus de 1,3 million d’acres de forêts, de fermes et de champs loin de tout, les collines et les montagnes semblent irréelles.

Pour beaucoup, la porte d’entrée de ce paradis hivernal se trouve au mont Jay Peak d’une altitude de 1 177 m, à une heure et demie de Burlington. De là, il n’y a qu’un pas à faire pour profi ter d’une cuisine aux accents québécois, d’arts de la scène de renommée mondiale et de « centres sportifs » hors des sentiers battus.

Ski, Ride and Splash at Jay PeakJay Peak Resort (jaypeakresort.com) is the only place in the country where you can drop down snowy chutes in the morning before dropping down La Chute — a waterslide with a 60-foot free fall — in the afternoon. The watery fun is at the Pump House Indoor Water-park, added to the ski area in 2011. The year-round temperature in the 50,000-square-foot indoor playground is a balmy 86 degrees Fahrenheit, with 104-degree hot tubs. Hot toddies at the poolside bar complete the job of warming up the winter-weary.

The resort also offers the indoor Ice Haus skating arena, a covered tram to take you to the top of the mountain and, of course, plenty of outdoor action skiing and riding Jay’s 385 acres of terrain. Thanks to the “Jay Cloud,” a weather phenomenon that brings an annual average of 355 inches of snow — unusual in Vermont — pow-derhounds can almost always sniff out fresh flakes in glades such as André’s Paradise and Valhalla. First-timers can learn their turns off an easy “magic carpet” before getting their own friendly test of the trees in Moon Walk Woods. Intermediates can cruise down long groomers such as Alligator Alley. It’s the perfect way to end the ski day before jumping into the Pump House’s Lazy River.

Smooth Skating on Lake MemphremagogNordic skating is the wild and wilderness-seeking cousin of figure skating, unbound by arenas, rinks or rules. Lake Memphremagog, a 32-mile-long glacial lake that spans Québec and Vermont, is one of the best places to experience the sport’s long-distance thrills on silky-smooth black ice. Equipped with long-bladed skates, Nordic enthusiasts can go as fast as 25 miles per hour, meaning they can cross into Canada faster than cars do at paved border crossings.

Originally from the Netherlands, the sport is just getting its legs in the Northeast Kingdom, with Nordic skaters working on multi-mile trails along the lake. Rent skates at the Great Outdoors (greatout doorsvermont.com) in downtown Newport, and find more informa-tion on the sport at nordicskater.com, a website run by Vermonter and athlete Jamie Hess.

Cross-Country on Kingdom TrailsThe wonders of cross-country skiing — feeling your lungs expand with crisp, cold air as your legs propel you through snow-covered woods and fields — increase exponentially on this 15-kilometer network of pristine trails. One particular stretch, on Darling Hill, has even been called the “prettiest mile in Vermont.”

Kingdom Trails (kingdomtrails.org) in East Burke represents a unique collaboration: Fifty northern Vermont landowners, busi-nesses and a nonprofit teamed up to ensure year-round recreational access to nonmotorized routes for athletes of all abilities. In sum-mer, mountain bikers hit a broad swath of singletrack; in winter, the dedicated cross-country terrain complements 30 more kilometers of trails packed for snowshoeing and specially equipped bikes. Don’t miss the view of Willoughby Gap from Darling Hill. And leave enough energy in the tank for tubing or sledding at the Kingdom Trails Nordic Adventure Center.

Ski, surf et éclaboussures à Jay PeakLe Jay Peak Resort (jaypeakresort.com) est le seul endroit aux États-Unis où l’on peut dévaler les pentes de ski enneigées le matin et se laisser descendre dans une glissoire d’eau de 18 m (La Chute) l’après-midi. Au parc aquatique Pump House Indoor Waterpark, qui s’est ajouté aux installations de la station de ski en 2011, il fait 30 degrés Celsius à l’année. Dans ce terrain de jeu intérieur de 4 650 m2, vous pouvez aussi vous prélasser dans des spas à 40 degrés et déguster des boissons chaudes au bar, près de la piscine – tout ce dont on a besoin pour se réchauffer l’hiver!

La station comporte également une patinoire intérieure, la Ice Haus, et un téléphérique qui vous transporte, à l’abri du froid, jusqu’au sommet de la montagne. Et bien entendu, dans ce domaine skiable

de 385 acres, les skieurs et les surfeurs ont l’embarras du choix. En raison d’un phénomène climatique nommé Jay Cloud, il tombe en moyenne 9 m de neige chaque année dans le secteur, ce qui est inusité pour le Vermont. Les amateurs de pou-dreuse trouvent donc presque toujours des flocons fraîchement tombés dans les sous-bois de la station, dont André’s Paradise et Valhalla. Les débutants peuvent s’exercer en lieu sûr avant de se lancer à leur tour dans le sous-bois pour novices Moon Walk Woods, tandis que les skieurs intermédiaires peuvent descen-dre de longues pistes damées, comme l’Alligator Alley. Patinage nordique sur le lac MemphrémagogLe patinage nordique est le cousin plus libre, plus « sau-vage », du patinage artistique : il ne se pratique pas sur une

patinoire bien définie et n’est régi par aucune règle. Le lac Memphré-magog, un lac glaciaire long de 50 km qui s’étend sur le Québec et le Vermont, est un des meilleurs endroits pour apprécier ce sport de longue distance, sur de la glace noire archilisse. Chaussés de leurs patins à longue lame, les patineurs se déplacent à une vitesse pouvant atteindre 40 km/heure; ils peuvent donc entrer au Canada plus rapidement que les voitures, qui doivent faire la file aux postes frontaliers.

Originaire des Pays-Bas, ce sport en est à ses débuts dans le Northeast Kingdom, où les adeptes parcourent des pistes de plusieurs kilomètres sur le lac. Winter’s whiteout turns the regal hills and mountain peaks

Downhill Drops at Burke MountainWorld Cup superstar and Olympian Mikaela Shiffrin perfected her slalom skills at Burke Mountain (skiburke.com), a peak that stands out not only geologically (it’s a monadnock) but also for its local reputa-tion, thanks to the resort’s low-key vibe. The 270-plus skiable acres accompany more than 100 acres of maintained tree skiing and three terrain parks. Beginning skiers and riders can find plenty of rookie-friendly runs on the lower part of the mountain — it’s all “green” runs except for one “blue” intermediate trail. The summit offers steep pitches, such as Doug’s Drop, for athletes with loftier — or Olympic — aspirations.

OmniGlobe Trotting at Fairbanks MuseumFrom the outside, Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium (fairbanksmuseum.org) catches the eye with its dramatic Richardsonian Romanesque archi-tecture — all stone arches and turrets. Inside, the eye doesn’t know quite where to land. Founded by Victorian collector Franklin Fairbanks in 1889, this cabinet of curiosities contains more than 175,000 eclectic, historical objects. Ranging from a stuffed polar bear to Civil War documents to an alligator mummy from ancient Egypt, the unusual artifacts were intended to bring the world to St. Johnsbury at a time when few traveled beyond the state’s borders.

Le bas de la montagne est largement adapté aux skieurs et planchistes débutants : toutes les pistes sont « vertes » (faciles) sauf une, qui est « bleue » (intermédiaire). Au sommet, les athlètes plus ambitieux – Olympiens ou pas – peuvent s’élancer à l’assaut de pentes abruptes, comme Doug’s Drop.

L’OmniGlobe au musée Fairbanks De l’extérieur, le Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium (fairbanksmuseum.org) attire l’attention grâce à son architecture spectaculaire de style roman richardsonien, caractérisé par des arcs et des tourelles de pierre. À l’intérieur, on ne sait pas trop où poser les yeux. Fondé par le collectionneur victorien Franklin Fairbanks en 1889, ce cabinet de curiosités renferme plus de 175 000 objets historiques éclectiques. Un ours polaire empaillé, des documents datant de la guerre de Séces-sion, un alligator momifié de l’Égypte ancienne – autant d’artefacts inusités qui ont été apportés jusqu’ici pour faire découvrir le monde aux habitants de St. Johnsbury, à une époque où ils étaient peu nom-breux à sortir de l’État.

Aujourd’hui, cette tradition se perpétue au musée, qui a élargi ses horizons. On célèbre le cosmos lors de spectacles présentés tous les jours au planétarium Lyman Spitzer Jr. Une imposante sphère interactive, l’OmniGlobe, permet aux visiteurs de mener leurs propres enquêtes sur les courants océaniques de la Terre et les sables de Mars. À la Vinton Space Science Gallery, on peut admirer des photos du télescope spatial Hubble.

A massive, interactive sphere called the OmniGlobe lets visitors investigate Earth’s ocean currents as well as the sands of Mars. And the Vinton Space Science Gallery displays photos taken by the Hubble Space Telescope.

Opera, Ballet and More at Catamount ArtsSince its 1975 inception, Catamount Arts (cata-mountarts.org) in downtown St. Johnsbury has grown into the Kingdom’s main hub for live performance and film. Housed in a former Masonic Lodge, the arts center includes two movie theaters, three art galleries and an 80-seat performance space. That last plays host to music, dra-ma and dance from community troupes and internationally touring acts.

Another big draw is Cat Arts’ HD broadcasts from institutions such as New York City’s Metropolitan Opera, London’s National Theatre and Moscow’s Bolshoi Ballet. Artworks and Artisans in Downtown NewportIts name is a mouthful, but the mission of the Memphremagog Arts Collaborative (MAC) Center for the Arts (memphremagogartscollabo rative.com) is simple: to support and celebrate the arts. With more than 50 Vermont artists, crafters, writers, musicians and performers involved, it’s safe to say the business plan is working.

Located on Newport’s main drag, this 4,000-square-foot com-munity center is divided into two spaces: a street-level showroom for local visual art and handcrafts; and the Art Cellar Gallery, which hosts visiting exhibits, lectures and free art classes for youngsters. Stop in to see handmade pottery, furniture, painted kimonos, handspun wool and, if you’re lucky, a local artist busy at work.

Parts of the Northeast Kingdom were once considered “food des-erts” — areas lacking access to affordable fresh ingredients. These days, the region is experiencing something of a culinary renaissance. It’s home to Greensboro’s Hill Farmstead Brewery (often lauded as the world’s best) and Jasper Hill Farm’s award-winning cheeses, not to mention craft distilleries, farmers markets and community gardens.

Here’s a rundown of a few restaurants — and one “tasting center” — that serve stick-to-your-ribs comfort food after your ice-bound adventures in the Kingdom.

The Inn, Montgomery Center, theinn.usThree fireplaces warm this hip, reimagined version of a hunting lodge. The pub menu includes international dishes as interpreted by chef Jason Chartrand. Items range from down-home burgers and ribs to braised-pork wontons and creatively sauced racks of lamb for sophis-ticated visitors.

Tucked into the lower level of Hotel Vermont, Hen of the Wood-Burlington just celebrated its fi rst anniversary. All dark wood and low light, it’s easily the Queen City’s coziest restaurant. And winter just might be its fi nest season.

Heat radiates from two fi replaces, and the cut logs stacked along the wall in a fi reside lounge by the bar remind you that you’re in woodsy Vermont.

Combine that atmosphere with some of the city’s most sophisticated adult beverages and snacks, and it’s easy to while away an hour or three just watching the fl ames dance.

The boozy bill of fare changes frequently, but a few standards anchor the list. The rye Vieux Carré, made with cognac, Benedictine and bitters, is a slow sipper — a smart choice to drink on its own or with a meal. The menu changes daily, too, but the food is always locally grown, fresh-sourced, seasonal and excellent.

Situé au rez-de-chaussée de l’Hotel Vermont, le Hen of the Wood vient de fêter son premier anniversaire. Ses boiseries sombres et son éclairage tamisé en font certainement le restaurant le plus intime de Burlington. Et c’est en hiver qu’il est le plus invitant.

La carte des alcools change fréquemment, mais certains classiques demeurent bien ancrés. As artisan distilleries crop up across the Green Mountains, local spirits are increasingly common on Queen City cocktail lists. And the drinks seem more nuanced and sophisticated with the opening of each new restaurant.

Here are four Burlington bars where locals like to imbibe in style.

Cold hands can cling to a Toddy DiCiociaro, a hot, spiced cider drink spiked with citrusy Amaro CioCiaro and sweetened with honey. A stronger option is the Brooklyn to Burlington: The dark bourbon beverage balances sweet maraschino liqueur and rich Italian vermouth with a sharp shot of amaro. If you like bitters, choose from several twists on the Negroni. Meanwhile, connoisseurs of clear-liquor drinks can opt for a foamy, gin-based Matterhorn, swirled with bright citrus and herbs.

Pair any of these with a wood-fi red Neapolitan pizza or a plate of charcuterie, and the winter wind will feel miles away.

In their hands, standard mixes such as the Aviation — a fl oral gin martini with violet liqueur — and the Pêche Manhattan — with peach-infused bourbon and cinnamon bitters — become top-shelf.

Warm up with a glass of Tavern Toddy. More exotic than the tradi-tional hot toddy, its whiskey is fortifi ed with Zwack, an aged Hungarian herbal liqueur (similar to bartender favorite Fernet-Branca), and sweet-ened with a shot of lemon and honey and a clove-spiked lemon peel.

Drink any of these with an appetizer of charred, roasted eggplant with ricotta or maple-glazed Brussels sprouts for a light snack at the bar. Or sip them as a starter to a dinner of roasted pork-shoulder bucatini, duck with plum preserves or, on Mondays, the meatiest $10 burger in town.

For most people, swimming in Lake Champlain in the dead of winter is a preposterous notion. For participants in the Penguin Plunge, it’s a welcome — albeit chilly — challenge. The frigid fun began in 1996, when a handful of locals dove into icy waters to raise money for Special Olympics Vermont. Today, the annual event is the organization’s largest, and coldest, fundraiser. In 2014, plungers in Burlington, Newport and North Bennington collected nearly $475,000 in donations. That fi nancial growth has been matched by community enthusiasm, which increases with each passing year. One of Vermont’s most popular winter events, the plunge draws thousands of spectators to Burlington’s Waterfront Park. They cheer on the plungers, many of whom take the dip in quirky costumes. Whether as teams or as individuals, these courageous swimmers make a splash.

On Christmas Eve, children fall asleep dreaming of the gifts that await them under the tree. For Clara, heroine of the ballet The Nutcracker, those dreams come alive. Onstage, she meets a prince and an evil Mouse King, and visits the Land of Sweets ruled by the Sugarplum Fairy. Driven by Tchaikovsky’s memorable score, this awe-inspiring production debuted in 1892. More than 100 years later, it continues to dazzle audiences worldwide — including at an annual performance at Burlington’s historic Flynn Center for the Performing Arts. In December, the Vermont Ballet Theater returns for its 10th season with Vermont’s Own Nutcracker. As 2014 winds down, First Night Burlington winds up. Now in its 32nd year, this annual bash is the longest-running event of its kind in the world. On New Year’s Eve, more than 100 performers take over venues in every corner of the Queen City and o� er hours of family-friendly entertainment. art at the airportBurlington City Arts curates art exhibits at the airport in three areas: the Skyway, the

area above the escalator and on the walls facing security for Gates 1-8. Whether you’ve arrived early for a flight or are waiting to pick up passengers, do take the

time to look around!In December, the Skyway and the Gates feature black-and-white landscape photogra-

phy by Gary Hall and watercolors by Maurie Harrington.During January and February in the Skyway, Carolyn Shattuck presents her mixed-

media collages on paper. The printmaker, book artist and painter makes multicolored, layered abstractions influenced by the history and beauty of Japanese prints. In the Gates 1-8 area, Casey Blanchard shows her monoprints, notable for their natural elements and painterly layering of color.

For all three months, Elizabeth Nelson’s acrylic abstract paintings can be seen over the escalator. If you’re going up, be sure to turn around and look at the wall behind you. But watch your step!

All of these artists live in Vermont. Please enjoy examples of their work at the airport and on their individual websites.

M att Harding doesn’t fly planes for a living. But when the snow flies at Burlington International Airport, if he didn’t fire up his engines, no one else could, either.

As airport facilities foreman, Harding oversees the ground crew that clears snow and ice from the runways, taxiways and “ramp” (where the planes park). If there’s even a dusting on the tarmac, Harding climbs into the cockpit of a $750,000 plow and rolls.

A 43-year-old Vermont native, Harding grew up in nearby Essex Junction, where he still resides. His interest in aviation took off during flights with his father, a private pilot who flew for the Civil Air Patrol. After earning his degree at the Univer-sity of Vermont, Harding trained as a truck mechanic before getting hired at BTV, where he’s been since 2002.

Though the BTV plow is as large as a tractor-trailer and built like an army tank, Harding needs a delicate touch when navigating around runway and taxiway lights, which are designed to snap off under the slightest pressure.

There’s also no time for lollygagging when you’re clear-ing snow between arriving and departing F-16s, commercial passenger jets and other civilian aircraft. Still, Harding enjoys those mornings when he can catch the sunrise over Camel’s Hump to the east. “It’s a billion-dollar view,” he says.

Is airport snow removal very different from plowing roads?Yes. You just can’t go where you want and leave a pile of snow anywhere. We can’t have any snow banks. When we sweep it,

Le déneigement d’un aéroport est-il très différent du déneigement des routes?Oui. On ne peut pas aller où l’on veut et on ne peut laisser aucune accumulation de neige nulle part. Lorsque nous balayons la neige, il y a derrière nous une souffleuse qui la ramasse et la projette dans les champs. Les feux [de pistes] mesurent 91 centimètres de haut, ils ne doivent pas être bloqués.

we have a blower come in behind us that actually picks it up and throws it into the fields. Those lights [on the runway] are only 36 inches high, so we can’t block them.

Tell me about the equipment.We have this huge, multifunction machine with twin 500-horsepower diesel engines. It’s got a 26-foot plow on the front, a 24-foot sweeper in the middle and a huge air blower on the back. The plow moves the heavy stuff, the sweeper sweeps it bare, and anything left over gets hit with a 300-mile-per-hour air blast. The back wheels and all four tractor wheels steer it, so it can turn in a perfect arc. It’s computerized, with a fighter-plane joystick control. It’s quite a technology jump from even five years ago.

How much snow can it handle?We can move a tremendous amount of snow. We’ve had big blizzards where we stayed open, such as the Valentine’s Day blizzard [of 2007, when 25 inches fell on Burlington]. Also, if there’s rain and we think the temperature is going to drop, we sweep it and dry it off.

Are you always talking to air-traffic control?Yes, they’re always taking us on and off surfaces, clearing us and giving us windows [of opportunity], like, “You’ve got 10 minutes out there,” or “You need to expedite. Now!”

What’s the best part of your job?My crew. Everyone here works really well together. We’ve got guys who’ve been here 37 years, so they know what they’re doing.

And when you’re not doing snow removal?We do all our own line striping [on the tarmac]. It must be very precise, accurate to a quarter inch. It’s done so well, the [Federal Aviation Administration] compliments us on our work. We also keep up the terminal as best we can. There’s a lot of maintenance in there, and we try to do it seamlessly. So we’ll come in in the evening and cut out tiles. No one wants to wait for a plane listening to a jackhammer trimming out concrete.

Is your work rewarding?It hit me a few years ago: You’re here at three o’clock in the morning, clearing off a dusting [of snow] all night long that just won’t stop, and you’re like, “What am I doing here?” And then we get a call that there’s a Life Flight [medical transport] 30 minutes out. I guess that’s what I’m doing here, and why it’s important the airport stays open 24/7. If we can keep it open, we do.

Quelle quantité de neige la charrue peut-elle déplacer?Énormément! Nous sommes restés ouverts lors de blizzards comme celui de la Saint-Valentin [de 2007, où 64 cm de neige étaient tombés sur Burlington]. Par ailleurs, s’il a plu et que nous pensons que la température va chuter, nous balayons et asséchons les pistes.

Êtes-vous en communication constante avec les contrôleurs aériens?Oui, ce sont eux qui nous disent

quand arriver et quand partir. Ils nous précisent combien de temps nous avons, par exemple : « Dix minutes, pas une de plus! » ou bien « Grouillez-vous, ça urge! ».

Quel est l’aspect de votre travail qui vous plaît le plus?L’équipe. Nous travaillons vraiment bien ensemble. Certains employés sont ici depuis 37 ans – ils savent ce qu’ils font.

Que faites-vous quand vous ne déneigez pas?Nous effectuons le traçage de lignes [dans l’aire de trafic]. Il faut être très précis, au centimètre près. La Federal Aviation Administration nous félicite d’ailleurs régulièrement pour notre travail. Nous assurons aussi l’entretien du terminal, ce qui représente beaucoup de travail. Le soir, par exemple, nous venons découper des tuiles. Personne ne veut attendre l’avion au son d’un marteau perforateur qui coupe du béton.

Votre travail est-il valorisant?J’ai compris quelque chose il y a quelques années. Je déneigeais les pistes, à trois heures du matin, et il n’arrêtait pas de neiger. Franche-ment, je me suis demandé ce que je faisais là. C’est alors que nous avons reçu l’appel d’un avion-ambulance, demandant la permission d’atterrir 30 minutes plus tard. Je me suis dit : « c’est pour ça que je suis ici ». C’est important que l’aéroport reste ouvert en permanence, dans la mesure du possible, bien sûr.
