Girls, Boys Soccer State Tournament Pairings Announced The pairings for the 26th Annual IHSAA Boys and Girls Soccer State Tournaments were drawn and announced this evening with 301 boys teams and 272 girls teams set for competition next week. Both tournaments mirror each other beginning with 16 sectionals in each of three classes running Oct. 7-12. Regionals will be played Saturday, Oct. 19, semi-states are Saturday, Oct. 26 at four sites with the winners advancing to the state championship matches on Nov. 1-2 in Fishers. In the most recent Indiana Soccer Coaches Association poll, the Class 3A, No. 1 Zionsville boys team will take on 19th-ranked Carmel in Sectional 10 at Pike. Class 2A top-ranked Mishawaka Marian will host South Bend Clay in Sectional 19. Class A No. 1 Park Tudor will host No. 17 Heritage Christian in Sectional 40. Also, last year’s Class 3A state champion Chesterton, currently ranked third, will meet Hobart in Sectional 2 at Valparaiso. Hammond Bishop Noll, last year’s 2A state champ now playing in 3A, will face East Chicago Central in Sectional 1 at Munster. And Fort Wayne Canterbury, which won a record seventh state title last year in Class A, has moved up to 2A and will meet No. 9 Manchester in the Sectional 22 bye match at Culver Academies. In the girls tournament, Class 3A top-ranked Hamilton Southeastern will serve as host to Muncie Central in Sectional 8. Class 2A No. 1 Brebeuf Jesuit will begin with Sectional 26 host Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter. And Park Tudor, this week’s No. 1 team in Class A, will face Indianapolis Lutheran in Sectional 43 played at Triton Central. Also, last year’s Class 3A state champion and second-ranked Carmel will host the Westfield-Zionsville winner in Sectional 10. Defending Class 2A state champion and second-ranked Indianapolis Cathedral will meet Herron in the Sectional 27 opener played at Greensburg. And Evansville Mater Dei, the small-school champion from a year ago and now playing in Class 2A where its ranked No. 5, will take on Gibson Southern in Sectional 32 action at Evansville Bosse. Notables About the Draw To conduct the random drawing for the state tournament, the IHSAA places ping-pong balls representing each school in a given sectional into a lottery-style air mix machine. A motorized fan in the bottom of the machine blows the balls around the inside of the transparent container and air then forces each ball up through a tube in random order. For example, the first ball retrieved from the machine will be the visiting team in game one with the second ball representing the home team in game one. The third ball to come out is the visitor in game two and the fourth ball the home team in game two. That same method is followed through all sectionals and regionals to determine every team’s placement in the bracket. *** About the Indiana High School Athletic Association, Inc. (IHSAA) The IHSAA is a voluntary, not-for-profit organization that is self-supporting without the use of tax monies. Since its founding in 1903, the Association’s mission has been to provide wholesome, educational athletics for the secondary schools of Indiana. Its 412 member high schools - public, institutional, parochial and private – pay no annual membership fee or incur entry fees to play in the Association’s tournaments. A state tournament series is conducted annually in 22 sports, 10 for girls, 10 for boys and two co-ed (unified flag football and unified track and field). A 19-person board of directors, elected by member school principals, governs the organization.
