Buccaneer Bay

Newsletter

October, 2014

Note from the Editor

Published Since April 1997

Here it is nearly the middle of the month and I am just

now getting the Newsletter out. We moved into our new

home back in Buccaneer Bay on September 20th and it

took us quite a while to get a path through all the boxes

and begin to put furniture where it belongs. We finally

got our computers up and running, so I don’t have to rely

on my cell phone to keep up with e-mails.

It won’t be long and Halloween will be here. Living

in the country last year we had no Trick-or-Treaters come

to our door. This being our first year on Lakeside Dr.,

where there is only one townhome besides our home, I

am not sure what kind of turnout we will have. But just

in case we have a lot left over I bought the kind of candy

I like.

With the arrival of October brings cooler weather,

leaves falling, the anticipation of winter and snow. As a

child I always loved snow days, but as an adult needing

to get out on the road, I really don’t look forward to

winter. I know last year was mild compared to previous

years. I found a web site that notes that the Omaha area

is in for an El Nino this year, but on the mild side. We

will see!

I will be honest I didn’t have time to put a lot of

research into this newsletter as I normally try to do. Our

move in September kept us quite busy and for our family

it is now the wedding season. Our nephew was married

on October 4, our granddaughter will be married on Oct.

11, and we have a niece getting married November 29.

This is also the election year that I am up for re-

election to the County Board. It has been a fast four

years and I am running for a second term. I like serving

District 2, even if I can’t resolve all of the issues that

come to me, I do my best to find an answer, even if that

answer is no. No one ran against me in the primary and

no one ran a petition drive this election to get on the

ballot. I will probably put up a few signs as a reminder

that the election is coming. Please vote on November 4

for the candidates of your choice.

Sincerely,

Janet McCartney

Keeping Your Personal Information Secure Offline Lock your financial documents and records in a safe

place at home, and lock your wallet or purse in a safe place

at work. Keep your information secure from roommates or

workers who come into your home.

Limit what you carry. When you go out, take only the

identification, credit, and debit cards you need. Leave your

Social Security card at home. Make a copy of your Medicare

card and black out all but the last four digits on the copy.

Carry the copy with you — unless you are going to use your

card at the doctor’s office.

Before you share information at your workplace, a

business, your child's school, or a doctor's office, ask why

they need it, how they will safeguard it, and the

consequences of not sharing.

Shred receipts, credit offers, credit applications,

insurance forms, physician statements, checks, bank

statements, expired charge cards, and similar documents

when you don’t need them any longer.

Destroy the labels on prescription bottles before you

throw them out. Don’t share your health plan information

with anyone who offers free health services or products.

Take outgoing mail to post office collection boxes or the

post office. Promptly remove mail that arrives in your

mailbox. If you won’t be home for several days, request a

vacation hold on your mail.

When you order new checks, don’t have them mailed to

your home, unless you have a secure mailbox with a lock.

Consider opting out of prescreened offers of credit and

insurance by mail. You can opt out for 5 years or

permanently. To opt out, call 1-888-567-8688 or go to

optoutprescreen.com. The 3 nationwide credit reporting

companies operate the phone number and website.

Prescreened offers can provide many benefits. If you opt

out, you may miss out on some offers of credit.

Little Known Facts

1. Why is a self-employed professional called a

“freelancer:?

The word freelance came out of the period

between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries, when

mercenary knights with no particular allegiance

would take their lances into battle for the prince or

state that paid them the most money.

2. Why is a newcomer called a “rookie”?

A “rookie” is anyone new to an organization

requiring teamwork and whose lack of experience

may cause errors. The word originated in the

American military during the Civil War.

3. How did the poem “Mary Had a Little Lamb”

become so famous?

The poem was written in 1830 by Sarah Hale, the

editor of Godey’s Lady’s Book. She was inspired

after watching young Mary Tyler’s pet lamb follow

the girl to school, which, of course, was against the

rules.

4. Precisely who qualifies as a baby boomer?

A baby boomer is someone who was born after

soldiers of the Second World War had come home

and up to eighteen years later, so the period differs in

some countries. In the U.S. and Canada, 20 million

babies were born during the boom between 1946 and

1964.
