This past Saturday night saw the crowing of a queen. The Miss Arab USA Pageant was

held at a magical oasis in the desert, “The Talking Stick Resort” in Scottsdale. If you

have never ventured out to this casino resort, I highly recommend it. It is an amazingly

beautiful getaway, and it is not even an hour drive from Buckeye. It was a spectacularly

beautiful night of Arabian Culture where 20 beautiful, educated and talented ladies vied

for the title of Miss Arab USA. All of these ladies were winners in my book, but only 1

could wear the crown. The ladies came from all over the country. I was in the fortunate

position to be able to

document the event for Miss Fatima Hammad

of Dearborn, MI. She

graciously allowed me

event and it was an honor.

The time came to hit the

stage in a cavalcade of

highlighting the Arabian

culture. The music was

magical as were the costumes presented in the

cultural dress segment of

the show. At the end of

the evening we waited

with baited breath as the

final winners names were

called. A hush fell over

the crowd as Arizona's

very own, Suzanne Aslam

was crowned Miss Arab

Reality Check By: Markita South

I am pleased to say I survived raising my younger son. Believe me it was not easy, but

here I am—living proof that I survived! You see, this child, whom I shall call Paul,

since that is his name, was a difficult child to raise. He was (and is) very intelligent,

and very talented at getting into mischief.

Admittedly, not all the trouble he got into was completely his fault. For instance, we

discovered he was allergic to mosquitoes when he was two and got bit on the eyebrow. His throat began to swell – and off we went to the ER. He drank gasoline when his dad

told him it was “juice for the lawn mower,” also at two years old. He nearly had to have

his stomach pumped when he ate some of his dad’s “candy,” which was actually Lith-

ium his dad took daily.

Paul also had a talent for breaking bones. When he was three, he tried to fly like Super-

man off of the top bunk and broke his left arm in three places. When he was six, he

stepped on a rotten branch while climbing a tree, and shattered his left elbow. That one

needed surgery. All in all, he broke 11 bones before reaching the age of 12.

Paul will turn 29-years-old in August, and he and his wife are expecting their second child. Their first child is a girl, and according to the ultrasounds, this second one is also

a girl. However, having issued that age-old “mother’s curse” (I hope you have a child

just like you!) to Paul on a daily basis, I am hoping this baby will be a reality check for

Paul and turn out to be boy.

Their baby is due August 13th, which is coming up rather quickly, and no matter what it

is, I will love it to distraction. And, I really don’t want it to get into as much mischief as

its father did. So, I guess I will just have to remove that curse and just pray they have a

healthy baby! I’ll be sure to let you know what it as soon as it is born!

Please feel free to email me at [email protected] any stories of reality checks

that have happened to you or someone you know. I may write my next Reality Check

about ….
