Ohio State opened the 2009 season by winning the William & Mary Tournament in Williamsburg, Va. The Buckeyes defeated Rider, North Carolina A&T and Maryland East-ern Shore in 3-0 sweeps and won the tournament with a 3-1 victory over host William & Mary. Katie Dull was named the most valuable player of the tournament with Chelsea Noble and Kristen Dozier being named to the all-tournament team.

At the Colorado State Classic in Ft. Collins, Colo., OSU fell in five games to home and tournament champion Columbus State. OSU defeated Georgia Southern and Texas Arlington in 3-0 sweeps to finish second in the classic. Dozier and Dull were named to the all-tournament team.

In Milwaukee, Wis. at the UW-Milwaukee Panther Invitational, Ohio State defeated Western Michigan, 3-2 and UW-Milwaukee 3-0 to finish second at the Invitational with Dull and Dozier earning all-tournament honors. The Buckeyes closed out the trip with a 3-2 victory at Marquette.

OSU returned home to host the Sports Imports Classic, winning the event with 3-0 wins over Bowling Green and Xavier and a 3-1 victory over Cleveland State. OSU’s Amanda Peterson was named the most valuable player and with Emily Danks and Noble was named to the all-tournament team. For her play in the Classic, Danks was named the Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week.

With a 12-1 non-conference record, Ohio State opened Big Ten play with a 3-1 loss at Illinois and a 3-0 victory at Northwestern. In home matches, OSU lost 3-1 to Wisconsin and defeated Iowa, 3-0. The Buckeyes then lost 3-1 at top-ranked Penn State. Ohio State lost two of the next three matches on the road falling 3-1 at Minnesota, defeating Michigan State 3-1 and losing 3-1 at Michigan.

The Buckeyes, at home, won 3-1 decisions over Purdue and Indiana. For her play against Purdue and Indiana, Ashley Hughes was named the Big Ten Offensive Co-Player of the Week. OSU fell 3-0 at Penn State before winning the next four matches. The run began with a 3-0 home victory over seventh-ranked Minnesota, a 3-1 win at Iowa, a 3-0 win at Wisconsin and a 3-1 victory against Northwestern at home.

Fifth-ranked Illinois defeated the Buckeyes, 3-1, in Columbus before a 3-1 win at Indi-ana and a 3-1 loss at Purdue. Ohio State closed out the regular season with 3-0 sweeps of 12th-ranked Michigan and Michigan State.

An at-large selection to the NCAA Championship, Ohio State hosted first and second round matches. The Buckeyes defeated Cincinnati, 3-1, in the first round and fell 3-1 to California in the second round to close out the season with a 25-10 overall record.

Postseason honors for Ohio State included Dull being named to the All-Big Ten squad. She was later named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association Mideast All-Region team and was named an honorable mention All-American. Noble was named to the third team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV team. Ohio State loses three starters in Dozier, Hughes and Noble but return 11 letter winners for the 2010 season.
