Transportation: Traffic Prediction
Background and Challenge:Large metropolitan areas may not have the necessary data, and/or intelligent analytic capability needed to forecast ‘near future’ traffic conditions, using historical and real-time data to improve transportation operations and planning
Benefits:Armed with forecasts, traffic controllers can anticipate and better manage the flow of traffic in order to alleviate congestion build up, support more intelligent use of existing transportation infrastructure and help deliver more capacity from existing networkBenefits can help to delay and reduce need for big infrastructure investments
Customer ExperienceLand Transport Authority in Asia
Use Case Scenario:Data is retrieved from a real-time data feed at regular intervals from transportation routesCurrent and historical information is used to analyze and predict traffic flow for each road linkPredictions for various traffic parameters are calculated & integrated with a command center’s traffic information hubForecasted results are displayed for for traffic controller use and decision makingAnticipated traffic issues can be shared with the public

Video Correlation & Analysis Suite (VCAS) and Smart Vision Suite (SVS)
Video Analytics Overview
– Automatically monitor video for specific events.• Provides real-time threat alerts.
– Indexes all moving objects in video allowing efficient search for a specific event.
• Can significantly reduce manpower, expense and time required to investigate an event.
– Summarize activity in a scene• Search for unusual events
• Pattern analysis
© 2011 IBM Corporation28
Events and Alerts can be seen, but not all detected by the Human eye
Events– Information about
everything that happens in a scene
– Indexes the video for search
– Support Activity Analysis– Forms the basis for Alert
detection
Alerts – Monitor scene for specific
pre-defined activities and alert the user immediately

Singapore Land Transit Authority
Centralize monitoring and transit arrival prediction to improve the travelers’experience
The Need: With Singapore’s population growing, the Singapore Land Transport Authority (LTA) needed a way to head off traffic congestion and maintain its world-class business climate.
IBM Solution:Singapore LTA can forecast traffic conditions up to 60 minutes into the future to help prevent traffic congestion before it occurs. A new bus arrival prediction system being piloted is expected to provide more accurate estimates of bus arrival times.
Inspired By
“…use ridership data to develop more optimal routes, which ultimately will reduce congestion and make public transport more appealing.”
Silvester Prakasam, Director of Fare Systems, Singapore LTA
• Identify vehicles and their current locations in real-time
• Estimate arrival time of vehicles based on current and predicted traffic conditions including:
• Public transportation vehicles• Private fleets
• Vehicle and fleet performance analytics such as:
• Number of vehicles in a route• Average transit time
