    scrits chinois de Touen-houang: Fonds Pelliot de la Bibliothque nationale, thanks to

    which I was progressively initiated into the rigors o Dunhuangology. It

    was Michel Soymi, too, who drew my attention to the Stra of the Three

    Kitchens, which is studied in the rst chapter o this book. My interest in the

    eld o Buddho-Taoism has also been stimulated by my participation in the

    collective readings o apocryphal stras that brought together a small team ohistorians o Chinese religions, organized by my riend and colleague Kuo

    Liying over the years 19982000.

    My decision to undertake the present volume, however, was made during

    the spring semester in 2002 when I was invited to teach at the University o

    Chicago as Numata Visiting Proessor o Buddhist Studies. The seminar I gave

    at the Divinity School and the Department o East Asian Languages and Civili-

    zations, in collaboration with Donald Harper, provided me with the opportu-

    nity to deepen and synthesize my research on the canonical texts and Dunhuangmaterials that I had chosen to introduce to the participating students. The rele-

    vance o this research, not only or specialists o China but also or historians o

    religions in general, was brought home to me that same spring, when I pre-

    to Face. That somewhat overambitious title has been retained as the work
