Dependent Origination
• All phenomena do not exist by themselves, and the right conditions must come together before these phenomena can arise and come into existence.
Four Kinds of Conditions in Dependent Origination
• Causal Condition• Conditions without
intervals• Conditional conditions• Advancing conditions
Law of Cause and Effect
• Effects arise from causes• Temporary appearances
depend on causes and conditions
• Many come from one• Existence relies on
Emptiness• A Buddha comes from a
human being
• Dependent Origination brings joy to the mind because it teaches us that our futures lie in our own hands.
• All things are impermanent and change due to causes and conditions.
• To see Dependent Origination is to see the Dharma. To see the Dharma is to see the Buddha.
Four Noble Truths1. Life is full of suffering
(dukka).2. Suffering is caused by our
attachments.3. The enlightenment or
complete liberation from all suffering is possible.
4. The truth teaches us how to become enlightened.
Kinds of SufferingsA.Two kinds of sufferings- Internal and External suffering
B. Eight kinds of sufferings- Birth- Aging- Illness- Death- Separation from loved ones- Encountering objects of hate- Not getting what we want- Five components of existence
•Buddha taught the truth of suffering not to make us despair but to help us clearly recognize the realities of life
Eightfold Path• Right View• Right thought• Right speech• Right Action• Right livelihood• Right effort• Right mindfulness• Right concentration
Five Precepts•No Killing•No Stealing•No Lying•No Sexual Misconduct
•No Taking of Intoxicants
Nirvana• Is a state that all
Buddhist practitioners want to attain.
•Sanskrit – extinction or liberation
•Nirvana is the “true self”•Nirvana is like a lotus
flower,water,food, wind mountainpeak.
How to attain Nirvana• Rely on upholding precepts• Rely on the Eightfold path
and the three Dharma Seals• Rely on the three studies
(precepts, meditative concentration and wisdom) and the four means of embracing (charity, kind words, beneficial actions, and cooperation).
