Carlos del Junco and the Blues Mongrels |Wednesday, May 25, (8pm), $20 Cover

To say he plays the harmonica is like saying “Jimi Hendrix plays guitar”. He blows the blues harp through a prism — suddenly it seems he’s holding every color in the musical rainbow right there in his hands.

Simultaneously sophisticated and raw, his playing blurs the boundaries between blues and jazz (hence the name for his band “The Blues Mongrels”). The emphasis is on blues, but Carlos and his band are not afraid to merrily traipse off in other directions delivering a seamless fusion of New Orleans second line grooves, swing, Latin, hip-hop or ska melodies, to swampy roots rock.

Born in Havana, Cuba, del Junco (loosely translated “of the reeds”) immigrated with his family at the age of one. He bent his first note on a harmonica when he was fourteen,

making his debut with his high school math teacher at a student talent night. In his early 20’s del Junco was immersed in a visual arts career; he graduated with honours from a four year programme, majoring in sculpture ( click here to see photos ) at the Ontario College of Art. Sculpture has definitely had an influence on his outlook on music: “Music is just a different way of creating textures and shapes.”

Brian Sasaki and the Scuffed Souls | Toronto, ONBrian Sasaki and the Scuffed Souls are a truly original Rockabilly, Blues & Swing act that bring together dynamic musicianship with tongue-in-cheek lyricism and vocal flare. With the positive energy the band delivers to each live performance, the audience always feels included. The group has just finished recording their debut EP, “Not for Prophets,” captured live-off-the-floor in Sutton, Ontario.

Jay Pollmann | Cayuga, ONJay Pollmann is a southern Ontario musician/songwriter born in Hamilton and raised just outside the small town of Cayuga. In 2013 Jay set out to launch a solo career finding an outlet for his musical ideas through his acoustic guitar with help from his brass slide, harmonicas, his feet and the odd tambourine stomp. He sings songs about the things he knows from “steering with your knees” to “closing down the local watering hole.” Channelling many styles and influences through his acoustic filter, the sound that forms is something Jay calls “Foot Stompin’ Rootsy Blues”. Never one to model or mimic himself after other artists Jay’s sound is organic, original, raw and full of energy.

Jesse Greene Band | Ottawa, ONAfter the successful release of her first musical foray, a self-titled EP called inevitably, “The Jesse Greene Band,” Jesse has found herself composing songs for her second album with a new rhythm section comprised of veteran musician Bassist Kurt Walther, and drummer Matt wood. Marc Seguin, her long-time and always entertaining harp player remains with the band as the only holdover from the previous ensemble."From Blues and Rock n' Roll to cosmic Soul from beyond...Jesse Greene and her band make my big toe shoot right out of my boot. Sons of Rhythm | Toronto, ONTake an energetic blues sound, mix it with a modern edge, throw in four magnetic personalities, and you'll have the powerhouse band that is Sons of Rhythm. The group, comprised of bassist and vocalist Mick Maratta, guitarist Federico Luiu, pianist and saxophonist Anthony Brancati, and drummer Mike Carbone, has made a name for itself on the Toronto music scene with their unique sound and lively performances. Sons of Rhythm captivate audiences with their creative arrangements of old standards as well as catchy, energetic originals.

Andre Bisson | Hamilton, ONWhen one thinks of all the great performers of soul and rhythm & blues music, one doesn't usually associate it with a young man from Northern Ontario - until they meet Andre Bisson. The award winning composer, arranger, guitar player and vocalist is one of the hardest working musicians around. Soulful, talented and sharp, Bisson was clearly born with a passion for music and performing, as well as the smarts and talent to pull it all together and build a large following in Southern Ontario and beyond.

Spencer MacKenzie | Ridgeway, ON16 year-old guitarist/singer Spencer Mackenzie has been making a name for himself in Southern Ontario by performing with some notable heavyweights on the blues music scene and earning

praise everywhere he goes. In 2013 he won the Niagara Music Awards Rising Star award and performed in the 2016 Youth Showcase at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis. In May 2016 he released his debut CD Infected With The Blues.

Each year, the Toronto Blues Society searches for new and undiscovered Canadian blues talent. This year, we received a great selection of applications. After hours of deliberation, this year’s six finalists have been selected! Admission is Free.

Harrison Kennedy

For this edition of Notes & Quotes, the person of interest is Harrison Kennedy. With the recent release of his newest album “This Is From Here” and the Juno award that followed shortly after, it seems fitting that one might want to know a little more about the artist behind the success. Harrison Kennedy is no stranger to the Blues, or accolades within the Blues Community – he is a fifteen time Maple Blues Award nominee, and boasts four Juno award nominations within an eight year span. He’s won a Hamilton Music Award, and placed as first runner up at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN. When looking past the hardware and Industry nods, it becomes clear quickly that Harrison Kennedy’s largest desire is to share an experience with an audience.

Kennedy has said, when talking about his nominations; “You know, the nominating committee has nominated me, and I’ve always been appreciative of that. I just love what I am doing, and to get recognition is a good thing. I save my nepotism for business, because it is business. But, when it comes to the music and the people – if people can’t say what I am singing about themselves, than I might as well not be singing about it, because I’d be singing to myself…and there’s no point to that.”

Harrison Kennedy’s views on the intention of his music spill into what he thinks when asked what he thinks the future of the Blues looks like too. He offered; “It was Edward Holland (Motown songwriter-producer) that came to me and said “do the Blues you feel”, so I wrote a song about the scud missiles that Americans were testing in BC – I was pissed about that. And he let me write it. And I wrote a song about gay rights…It’s the Blues, but it’s the Blues today. The Blues is always gonna be here. There’s always gonna be wars or rumours of wars until the end of time. Someone’s always gonna be messin’ with somebody. I’m just glad that I have that idiom to write on where I can say things that’s happening today, and still give them that Blues, because people like the feel. The Blues will always be around because people need to get there to feel better.”

Kennedy has been immersed in music for almost his entire life, and began his music journey at a young age. He grew up in a house filled with music and famous visitors such as Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday and Lonnie Johnson. “A lot of entertainers like Billie Holiday and John Lee Hooker would come to town and end up at my house or my aunt's place. I heard this music and I thought everybody sounded like that. I thought that was the way you had to sound." By age 15, Kennedy sang in a church and in a blues band. "Blues was breakfast, dinner and supper," he said.

In 1969 he took a hiatus from college to become a founding member of the million selling Detroit Soul Super Group “The Chairmen of the Board” with whom he toured the world, as well as appearing on Soul Train, American Bandstand and the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.

Since signing with Electro-Fi Records in 2007, Harrison Kennedy has released 5 internationally acclaimed albums and is well known as an insightful and original Blues singer and songwriter. Kennedy’s most contemporary offering, “This Is From Here” was co-produced by keyboard player Jesse O’Brien, with guitarist Colin Linden guesting on several tracks. In addition to a Juno Award, it has also won the prestiegious Academie Charles Cros in France for Blues Album of the Year in 2016.

RIP Malcolm Tomlinson. Malcolm passed away at age 69, on April 2. In the ‘80s he was a member of local favourites The Cameo Blues Band, as well as gigging regularly with his own band. He was a vocalist/songwriter/drummer long prominent on the Toronto scene. Tomlinson began his musical career in his native England in such bands as The Panthers, The Motivation, Gethsemane and The Penny Peeps, playing support slots for the likes of Jethro Tull, Fleetwood Mac and Cream. After moving to Toronto in 1969, he played with Milkwood, Syrinx and Rhinoceros, and joined Rick James’ Stone City Band in 1973. He recorded with Bearfoot, then formed The Malcolm Tomlinson Band, who released albums in 1977 and 1979 (Coming Outta Nowhere and Rock ‘N Roll Hermit respectively) on A&M Records (from Kerry Doole courtesy FYI Music News)

Blues on Film: The Canadian Music Week Film Festival (in conjunction with The Hot Docs Film Festival) present the Canadian Premiere of I Am the Blues on Monday May 2 at 4 p.m.at the TIFF Bell Lightbox 2. Bobby Rush will be there with the director, Canadian documentary filmmaker Daniel Cross, and will perform a set at the Silver Dollar later in the evening as part of the premiere celebration with Shawn Kellerman who toured with him for several years. I Am The Blues takes the audience on a musical journey through the swamps of the Louisiana Bayou, the juke joints of the Mississippi Delta and Moonshine soaked BBQs in the North Mississippi Hill Country. Visiting the last original blues devils, many in their 80s, still living in the American

deep south and touring the Chitlin’ Circuit. Let Bobby Rush, Barbara Lynn, Henry Gray, Carol Fran, Little Freddie King, Lazy Lester, Bilbo Walker, Jimmy “Duck” Holmes, RL Boyce, LC Ulmer, Lil’ Buck Sinegal and their friends awaken the blues in all of us. In addition to the May 2 screening, the film plays Tuesday May 3 (1pm at the Bloor Cinema - part of "Docs 4 Schools"), Wednesday, May 4(10:45 at the TIIF Lightbox2) and Saturday May 7 – 3:45 at TIIF Lightbox1). The film will have a theatrical run at the Bloor Cinema starting June 3.

Stony Plain Records signs Paul Reddick: Paul's label debut CD, Ride the One, will be released on May 20 and they will be celebrating with a big launch party at Lula Lounge on June 15. Produced by Colin Cripps (Blue Rodeo) and recorded at Union Sound Company in Toronto, Ride the One showcases 11 all-original songs and includes a backing band that features special guest Steve Marriner of MonkeyJunk on guitar, keyboards and backing vocals. Reddick co-wrote three songs on the most recent highly-acclaimed MonkeyJunk album for Stony Plain, Moon Turn Red.

For over 25 years, Paul Reddick has been melding poetry, mystery, darkness and light along with an extensive knowledge of the history and traditions of blues. An unofficial poet laureate of Canadian blues, Mojo Magazine praised his “wayward brilliance” in an earlier review. Reddick’s song, “I'm A Criminal,” was used by Coca-Cola in a TV commercial that aired during the Super

Bowl. “Ensuring the long-term health of blues in Canada has become a passion for Paul Reddick, and the motivation behind his creation of the Cobalt Prize, aimed at celebrating songwriting innovation within the form,” wrote FYI Music News in an interview with the musician. “The singer/harmonica player has never forgotten he was once in that position when he formed The Sidemen in 1990, a band whose skillful balance of tradition and originality laid the foundation for a new crop of homegrown talent,” added the site. One of those bands that picked up the torch was MonkeyJunk, who returned the favour of Reddick’s influence on them with member Steve Marriner’s participation on Ride the One, Reddick’s fourth solo album.

Sarah on the Radio: Internet radio channel blues411.com ("Carefully Curated Blues Music") will have a new show featuring Canadian blues thanks to TBS publicist Sarah French. The Black Coffee Radio Hour will feature the Best in Canadian Blues…And Beyond. Listen in Tuesdays at 2:00 pm.

Not Fat Head: Al Lerman's new album "Slow Burn" has been recorded, and the final mixes should be completed later this week. Al says, "I'm excited about this one, and think producer Alec Fraser has done a stand-out job. Mastering comes next, then manufacture." His official CD Release Party will take place Wed June 22 at Hugh's Room in Toronto. Al will be heading out west at the end of the month for two weeks of touring in tandem with blues great Tim Williams.

The local Festival Season kicks off with the Durham West Blues Fest in Markham on May 28. It will feature Voodoo Pawn Shop, Steve Hill, Swingin’ Blackjacks, Blue Room, an afternoon blues guitar workshop in the Council Chambers with Suzie Vinnick and more.

Up the road in Orangeville, the Orangeville Blues and Jazz Festival (June 2-5) will feature four stages, 80 acts, and many free concerts and events in their 14th edition.

This year the Main Stage will feature the word/fusion blues of headliner Harper & Midwest Kind, Australian singer/songwriter Peter Harper (blues didgeridoo!) and some of Canada's finest musicians from coast to coast including multi-award winners Fathead, Paul James and Harrison Kennedy. 2016 Juno Award nominees Blackburn will headline the main stage on Friday night. There is an amazing line-up of powerful female performers including Susie Vinnick, Andria Simone, Heather Katz, Cecile Doo-Kingue, Dione Taylor and Juno winner Diana Panton. International "must see" acts include Denise Reis from Brazil along with the Gabriel Palatchi Trio from Argentina.

The Opera House Series will feature jazz and acoustic performances with free admission on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. This is the perfect venue to enjoy performances by Michael Jerome Browne, Ray Bonneville, Alan Gerber and more.

The TD Tent Local Stars stage will showcase Delaney, The Firecats, Justin MacDonald, Soul Collective and many more.

The Meridian Opening Gala will be held June 2nd at the Best Western Inn with jazz singer Aura, Big Rude Jake, the Jerome Godboo Band featuring Shawn Kellerlman.

The ever-popular Blues Cruise on Broadway is back on Friday, June 3, featuring 10 bands and more than 300 classic cars. Saturday afternoon will feature free music workshops in the Orangeville Public Library and the Blues & Bikes event on Mill Street. Throughout the weekend, people can enjoy great live music in more than 20 restaurants, pubs and clubs around Orangeville.

Following last year's overwhelming response to the Memorial March, the parade will be returning. The traditional New Orleans style funeral march represents a celebration of life and serves as a memorial to past

volunteers. This traditional musical sendoff symbolizes life's journey and lifts the spirits. Everyone is invited to join the march, starting from the main stage area and proceeding down Broadway.

Paul Reddick Ride The One Stony Plain/Warner

Our unofficial poet laureate jumps right into this new CD with “Shadows”, featuring a gruff vocal and some very fierce harmonica. What follows over the hard-rocking twin guitars/bass & drums backdrop is imagery that only Paul Reddick could create. Steve Marriner plays one of the guitars and Greg Cockerill plays the other one while Anna Ruddick plays bass and Derek Downham, drums. Producer Colin Cripps, who did such a fine job on Wishbone, adds guitar as well and Marriner adds keyboards, usually for atmospheric effect. The subtitle for the album is ‘Blues Is A Beautiful Landscape’ and Reddick uses that landscape well. You won’t find any 12 bar blues here but his fascination with the Lomax field recordiings has given him pretty much absolute freedom. The two guitars, prominent and inventive bass & drums and his vocals, often sung through what sounds like his harp mic are as important in this sound world as are his lyrics. Many of the songs ride on one chord bringing to mind some of Captain Beefheart’s recordings. “Shadows”, “Celebrate”, “Living In Another World” are all examples of this approach. There are other songs that aren’t: “Mourning Dove” is quieter with the vocals closely miked over chiming guitars and an insistent bass. “Watersmooth” is a churning rocker about a departing loved one. “Love And Never Know” is another. The closing “Moon And Star” is just Reddick and his harp, much like Sonny Boy Williamson’s solo performances except that Paul’s lyrics aren’t improvised. As always it’s Paul’s lyrics that draw you in and each one of these songs repay the effort. He’s taking

appropriate. The anthemic “Breaking Free” documents a final departure from a long relationship. “Work Horse” gets the most traditional funky blues structure of the songs here and seems to be about either her producer or her manager, either way a curious choice of subject but it sure gives her the blues. Laacks gets an excellent acoustic guitar solo. A cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Wild Horses” seems an odd choice for such a prolific songwriter but she obviously wanted to do it, it gets such a lovely performance, backed only by acoustic guitar. Steve Dawson Solid States And Loose Ends Black Hen/eOne

Steve Dawson’s last disc was recorded solo and at various studios while on tour. This one is more prepared, done with a band in one studio with a horn section, a fiddle player and backup singers. The band is Colin Linden’s: John Dymond on bass & Gary Craig on drums and they back this guitar wizard well indeed. Dawson’s new songs are all excellent and Fats Kaplin’s fiddle & viola play an important part of several of them. “Loose Ends” opens the disc with Dawson on electric slide singing about those late night thoughts, one in particular. A most imaginative slide solo is a highlight but the horns and backup singers add a great deal to a fine song. “Broken Future Blues” has a lovely acoustic guitar base and his pairing it with an electric one, or maybe two, is particularly inventive. Kaplin shines on “Leave My Name Behind” while the baritone saxes and the guitars do the heavy lifting. Dawson works his magic on a couple of traditional songs as well: Riley Pucket’s “Can’t Put That Monkey On My Back” is stunning and Gid Tanner & The Skillet Lickers’ “Riley’s Hen House Door”, which gets an extraordinary workout from Dawson on acoustic slide, a solo treat. These are the edgier of the songs on this generous 14-song disc, the

The Cobalt Prize for excellence in blues songwriting is a means to this end and it has had an enormous impact and I think his writing and performing here will only enhance the Prize. Layla Zoe Breaking Free Ruf/eOne

Montreal resident Layla Zoe has been busy making a name for herself in Europe lately. With a couple of fine albums behind her on the German Cable Car label, she now has an excellent new one on the much bigger Ruf label. As with the earlier two, she writes the lyrics and her guitar player supplies the music. Her new guitarist is Jan Laacks who is also her producer. He knows his way around the studio and his beautifully recorded guitars suit her style well. Gregor Sonnenberg is on bass and Hardy Fischötter on drums. “Backstage Queen” makes for a hard rocking opener with its acoustic bridge a nice touch. “Why Do We Hurt The Ones We Love” starts quietly and acoustic but builds to a soaring electric climax, showing off her incredible vocal range and power. Her singing gets better with each album and easily gets its best recording here yet. “Wild One” is about a certain kind of woman whose talents are graphically described, a Layla Zoe specialty. Sonny Landreth guests wonderfully on slide. She has lately taken to writing quite long songs and “Highway Of Tears” is the new one here. It’s a mesmerizing slow blues about our missing Aboriginal women, with Layla singing in Europe to Europeans about her feelings of shame for her country – powerful and moving, Mr. Laacks’ music is always


others lean towards country and Americana but are none the worse for that. You’ll be astounded at the work he’s put into his guitar sound and his vocals will seriously impress you as well. He’s making a rare local appearance on May 17 at the Burdock, 1184 Bloor near Lansdowne.

Dylan Wickens Hi Lo-Fi Self

Stratford resident Dylan Wickens is a veteran singer/guitarist/songwriter with a band called the Grand Naturals. It’s been a liitle while since Tattoo but he’s spent the time coming up with some very good new songs. He works in a trio format and these new songs will ensure a first rate CD launch at the Dora Keogh on May 6. The Grand Naturals are now Dennis Pinhorn on bass & Al Webster on drums, accomplished veterans both. A mid-tempo slide-driven chugger, a song about retribution, “Foolish Heart”, opens, with Wickens’s slightly processed vocals attractively doubled by guitar & bass.

Another rocking highlight is next: “(That’s How It Is When) Love & Lust (Coliide)” with music as good as its title. “Run Sister” features Tortoise Blue on amplified harp. The double time ending here is a nice touch. Blue adds organ to the radio-friendly rocker “Calamity Jane”. “She’s Back In Town” is something a little different, a talking blues about a particularly attractive woman, and with a particularly lovely double tracked guitar extro. The closer is a live track, a fine version of “In My Time Of Dying”, with a searing slide solo.

Golden State Lone Star Revue Electro-Fi/Outside

Although he’s using the Revue as the title for this disc, Mark Hummel sings and adds his masterful harmonica plus most of the songwriting & arranging to a program that honours the blues traditions of each state. Using Californian Little Charly Baty and Texan Anson Funderburgh along with R.W. Grigsby from Rusty Zinn’s band on bass and Wes Starr from Omar & The Howlers on drums, Hummel leads a traditional blues supergroup. Those guitarists were only guests on his The Hustle is Really On from a couple of years ago. Jimmy Pugh adds keys and with a couple of horns where needed, all you need to do next is sit back and enjoy. “Midnight Hour” is Gatemouth Brown’s and what an opener it makes. Billy Boy Arnold’s “Here’s My Picture”, a rare Vee-Jay single, rewards close listening. Mose Allison’s “Stop This World” is lovely, suiting Hummel’s vocal perfectly. Hummel’s own “Little Kewpie Doll” is a fine new rocker. “Pepper Mama” is a tribute for BB King with Anson playing wonderfully. Grigsby’s “Detroit Blues” is a new Jimmy Reed-styled original describing the mortgage crisis of a few years back and may be the first blues to do so. Jimmy McCracklin’s “Georgia Slop” gets a ferocious workout with a stunning harp solo over those baritone saxes and keys. They do Chicago too with a spot-on version of JB Hutto’s “Dim Lights”. The closer, “End of the World”, is an ambitious, siren-laden slow blues, with Hummel quite sure about who he wants to have with him when it happens. This band is touring and the dates are at www.markhummel.com. They were in Buffalo in April but are getting no closer than that so far. If you’re into some exceptional traditional blues this one’s for you. It is also available on vinyl.

Blues Hall of Fame Inductees Announced: On May 4, 2016 five legendary blues performers, two individuals who were instrumental in the creation of blues music, five single blues recordings, one blues album and an important piece of blues literature will be inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame.

Elvin Bishop, Eddy Clearwater, Jimmy Johnson, John Mayall, and The Memphis Jug Band will each take their places beside performers who have been deemed by a group of blues scholars and industry veterans to be the Best in the Blues. Each of these musicians has carved his place

in blues history. Bishop’s beginnings with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band to his more recent recognition for the 2015 Blues Music Awards “Song of the Year” have elevated him to the highest stature in blues music. Clearwater, Johnson, and Mayall each boast

careers that have spanned more than a half century, and their talent has not waned as they each continue to produce music and to perform for devoted audiences, yet each are distinguishable by their stage presence and musical talent. The Memphis Jug Band’s music crossed the racial divides of the first half of the twentieth century and inspired many musicians to follow in their footsteps.

The classic album Blues in the Mississippi Night (Nixa, 1957: United Artists, 1959) is being honored as are the singles, “Crazy Blues” by Mamie Smith (OKeh, 1920), “That’s All Right” by Jimmy Rogers (Chess, 1950), Billy Boy Arnold’s “I Wish You Would” (Vee-Jay, 1955), Johnny Moore’s Three Blazers’ (Charles Brown, vocal and piano) “Merry Christmas Baby” (Exclusive, 1947), the first Yuletide song inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame, and “Blues Before Sunrise” by Leroy Carr and Scrapper Blackwell (Vocalion, 1934).

Non-performer individuals to be recognized by The Blues Foundation for their behind-the-scenes contributions are Malaco Records partners Tommy Couch, Sr. and Wolf Stephenson. The book Early Downhome Blues: A Musical and Cultural Analysis, by Jeff Todd Titon is the literature entry into the Blues Hall of Fame this year, and is one of the most important analytical studies of the blues to have been published.

The induction ceremony will be held Wednesday, May 4, at the Sheraton Memphis Downtown in Memphis, Tennessee, the night before the 37th Blues Music Awards. These newest inductees will be added to the museum’s permanent exhibits and interactive displays in conjunction with their induction this May. See more at www.blues.org

The ever-popular Bobby Rush will be in TO to support the Canadian Premiere of I Am the Blues on Monday, May 2 at 4 p.m.at the TIFF Bell Lightbox 2. Later that night he will perform a set at the Silver Dollar (9pm) with long-time guitarist Shawn Kellerman as part of the premiere celebration. The film has a few more screenings as part of Canadian Music Week and the Hot Docs Film Festival (see LBN) and will begin a theatrical run at the Bloor Cinema starting June 3. A must-see for blues lovers.
