| THE BR STORYAs a young man, Buddy Rhodes was consumed by clay. It was all he could think about,

night and day. More important than the material itself, Buddy was compelled by the creative

process. Eventually that creative process pushed his desire beyond the capacity of the

material he was creating with. His ideas were too big for a kiln.

Rather than let this limit his ability to create, Buddy struck out to find something different

to quench his desire as a maker. Buddy was after a material that would behave like clay,

but that could develop strength and durability without the need of a kiln. Buddy was after a

self-hardening clay.

Buddy found his solution in concrete, but not concrete in the way the world had come to

know, as a workhorse in the development of modern civilization- cold and utilitarian. Buddy

was investigating the material through his own lens, as a moldable and infinite material, and

from that process a whole new material came to life. Buddy created a material that behaved

like both clay and concrete, and from that moment an evolution began.

Buddy sought to create and to share with other makers who wished to do the same. Over

the decades of this collaboration, a whole new language has been born. A language in the

tradition of the craftsman movement, and a set of materials that would allow the maker

community to create their vision.

BlueConcrete created a fertile ground to experiment and

develop concrete beyond the limitations it had always

known. This philosophy is revolutionizing the industry.

Buddy demanded more, and

created something new.

BlueConcrete demanded more,

and created something better.

Now these two brands have

joined forces to create the

Evolution of artisan concrete.

We have created materials that we believe are easier to use,

perform at the highest level available in artisan concrete, and

that expand the possibilities for makers around the world in

ways that only time will reveal.

Buddy started an evolution. These materials are his invitation

to you to join that evolution. This is not the end, but rather

the continuation. Now it’s time for you to continue the

tradition. Welcome to the Evolution!

We have created materials that we believe are easier to use, perform at the highest level available in artisan concrete, and that expand the possibilities for makers around the world .

Buddy has spent the past 2 years collaborating with the BlueConcrete team about ways to improve the materials we make available. BlueConcrete has spent extensive time working

with concrete professionals across all spectrums, from the DIYer to multi-

national industrial companies, in order to understand their needs and provide solutions to their troubles. It is the merger of the inspiration of Buddy and the technology of BlueConcrete that has brought these new materials into the world. Enjoy!

THE NEW MATERIALS

MIXESLooking at all the possible ways to approach mix design, we have settled on 4 mixes which are the building blocks from which

virtually anything can be created. Each one of these mixes are unique in their workability habits, and they are all built with

performance in mind. These mixes are incredibly strong and durable, but more importantly, they are versatile enough to build

virtually any finish possible with concrete.

The Original Recipe, this is the mix that started this all, famed for it’s ability to behave like clay. While we have

made significant improvements to this mix in the Buddy Rhodes Craftsman Mix, the Counter Mix will be available

to those who have made a habit of using this mix over the past decade. For recipes and instructions for this mix,

please visit our website. Cementitious Content 23.8 lb

The Craftsman Mix is our easiest mix to work and provides exceptional possibilities for a variety of surface finishes.

We have taken the mix Buddy created decades ago and have improved performance. The mix is formulated with

well proportioned ingredients and a dry polymer. Water is the only ingredient needed to achieve high performance

and great workability.

The Craftsman mix can be pressed up vertical surfaces, trowels like butter, and can be made fluid to conform

to any shape. It is ideal for the newcomer to concrete, but is also revered by professionals for it’s versatility.

GFRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete) has become the material of choice for many in the professional community.

BlueConcrete’s team was the first group in the artisan world to address the shortcomings of the GFRC mix design

and developed mixes that outperformed what the market had seen before. Buddy’s new GFRC mix is the next

generation of the Fuzion ZFRC, a mix that was developed and refined by people that work with GFRC professionally.

This mix can be sprayed, pressed, cast and troweled, and is a perfect high performance base mix for more traditional

concrete mixes. This GFRC mix can be made incredibly thin, and can be manipulated into virtually any shape. It is the

workhorse of our mixes and is the preferred choice for many of the most successful artisans in the concrete world.

While there is a slightly higher learning curve with this mix then there is with the Craftsman mix, it is still accessible

to newcomers who are looking to push the boundaries a bit further. Cementitious Content 26 lb

This is a mix for the most demanding applications. ECC was developed to combat concrete’s naturally brittle

habits. This a big problem particularly in areas prone to earthquakes. ECC is an incredibly ductile material, allowing

unprecedented flex prior to failure. We have improved the workability of this mix. The ECC mix can be the consistency

of taffy or can behave like hard clay. With a skilled hand, this mix can also be cast, troweled, and pressed. This mix

performs at the highest level and is not for the faint of heart. This is a mix for masochists, madmen, engineers and

artisans with the highest demands of performance and durability. Cementitious Content 28.45 lb

This is just as it sounds. Ten pounds of a mix that just needs water. Reinforcement, water reducer, additional aggre-

gates, and pigment can be added to suit the project. This mix can be made very thin as it does not have any large

aggregates. This mix is ideal for smaller projects. Whether a base for a sculpture, handcrafted jewelry, objects for

the home and garden, or art, this mix brings the craft of concrete to artisans who want to create on a smaller scale.

These mixes are available fully blended in 50lb bags using aggregates that have been specially selected for their

unique characteristics. They contain no water reducer, fiber or pigment, leaving ultimate control in your hands. We

have various recipes for you to try and a wide range of materials for you to choose from in order to create a mix

perfect for your needs.

Rather than just having mixes that are blended for you, we are introducing the capability to build your own mix using

your local materials. We will give you the recipe we use in our blended mixes, and you can follow that recipe using

your local ingredients to blend the mix yourself. You can also use these admixtures to create mixes entirely unique

to you. In fact, much of the development of this set of materials is based on artisans who have done just that, and

have come back to us to share their feedback and results.

and THERE’S MOREIn addition to the new pre-blended mixes and admixtures, we have improved the entire supporting cast.

New materials include

• Added reinforcement options

• New sealer options

• Limitless color options

• Glazes for a broad range of color tinting of finished concrete

• A selection of raw materials, as well as new tools and pads

We are expanding our voice in the arena of training and information, continuing to bring top of the line training from the

Much of the success of an artisan concrete project boils down to selecting the right mix for a given project. What is the right mix? That depends on a few factors.

—What finish are you after?—What is your skill level?and so on…. These questions begin the process of picking the right mix

for the project. As you answer the various questions, the right mix will become more and more clear.

PICK THE FINISH THAT IS RIGHT FOR YOUR PROJECT.

W H O A R E YO U ?

This may simplify the decision making process more than anything. While not a steadfast rule, our mixes can be broken down

into how user friendly they are. The Craftsman Mix is a very simple mix to use, the GFRC mix requires a touch more effort,

and the ECC is for masochists and madmen. While there are certain exceptions to these rules (some of which will get pointed

out in the recipe section), this should give you a good reference point.

Each technique has its own unique finish qualities and working parameters so each has its own unique mix design. The basic ingredients are the same, but each technique section will explain and demonstrate its own particular procedure. When working with such specialized methods we must maintain respect for the medium and its timetable.

I just want “concrete countertops.” It’s just concrete, right? Correct, it is just concrete and concrete is an infinitely moldable material, that’s what makes it so cool. Since it is moldable, the first thing you need to figure is how you want it to look.

FINISHESP R E S S E D —This is Buddy Rhodes’ Signature technique. The concrete is pressed into precast in forms, and excels for

vertical surfaces with minimal effort. The color options are endless. The size of your voids depends on how soft your mix is

and how hard you press. This is arguably the easiest finish to get great results from.

C R E A M —This finish is accomplished when very little processing is done to a neatly cast piece. This finish requires

significant attention to detail during the mold building process. It shows loads of character, while often being soft and

muted in appearance.

P O L I S H E D — This finish is commonly referred to as a “salt and pepper” finish. This is a result of polishing the concrete

after it has been cast. This can be achieved whether cast right side up, or precast upside down. This process exposes a small

amount of sand in the mix, which is where the name “salt and pepper” comes from.

G R O U N D — This is similar to Polished, but more of the surface is removed to expose the sand fully, or to expose decorative

aggregates. This is the process to use if you want to expose glass or other decorative aggregates.

T R O W E L E D —This is a finish that reflects the hand of the maker. Full of character and variation, every piece will be

different and unique.

H I G H S P R AY—This is a GFRC technique created when the mold is sprayed with variation, and often with different

colors. It produces variations in tone and texture, either subtly or dramatically.

V E I N E D — This is achieved when different colors of wet mix are blended to together and placed in the form. There are

numerous methods to achieve this finish.

G L A Z E D — All of these finishes can be glazed using various application techniques. The finish you choose will be the

undertone of color and movement that you see below the glaze. You can use a Sprayed or Lightly Ground finish, and add

a tint, creating a more monolithic finish. You can also use a Pressed or Veined finish, apply the glaze, and have far more

movement and character in the finished piece.

C U S T O M — For every finish we discuss, there is an artisan out there coming up with something new. Concrete is a material

of infinite possibilities. These mixes and techniques can be mixed, matched, and manipulated to create infinite variations.

A R E T H E O T H E R C O N S I D E R AT I O N S ? Due to design considerations, the region where the work is to be done, and the

individuality of each artisan, there will always be other variables to consider. If you are stumped with a problem in figuring out which

mix to use, or which finish would best suit you, we have a forum that is a great resource for answering these very questions. ask.

Concrete is a complicated material. We believe that it is through discussion and consideration that the complexities of this material

are lessened. We don’t believe that over simplification makes anyone’s lives better. We have made an effort to simplify the process

where it can be simplified, based on many decades of direct experience in this medium. We hope to arm you with the facts and insights

so you can make good decisions.

There are as many concrete recipes and techniques as there are baking recipes and methods! Understand, these recipes are not steadfast rules, rather general guidelines around mixes used by professionals to achieve various results. These mixes can be

manipulated, modified and twisted to suit your creative needs. There are as many finish possibilities with these mixes as there

are artisans using them.

So let’s talk about some good practices.

T E M P E R AT U R E I S I M P O R TA N T.

When cement and water are combined, a chemical reaction

begins. This reaction produces heat, and is accelerated

by heat. The hotter the mix gets, the faster it hardens. For

large or complicated projects, you may need to extend the

working time of the mix. The important factor is to monitor

and understand the temperature of the mix. Once the

temperature of your mix reaches 70°F, the cement reaction

begins to accelerate. Keep the mix temperature in the high

50’s or low 60’s if possible.

One way to keep the mix cool is to use cold water and even

ice. How Cold? That depends on the other variables you are

dealing with. Some portion of your water is ice, in hotter times

up to 50% of your water weight will be ice, and other times it

means just using cool water.

WAT E R R E D U C E R S | P L A S T I C I Z E R S

Water Reducer is used in many of these mixes. The water reducers, also commonly known as plasticizers, are chemicals that

reduce the amount of water necessary to produce the mix consistency you are after. In general, the more water used, the

weaker the mix will be. Our goal is to minimize the water content and still maintain the required workability. Water can be

added in small doses in situations where the durability of the object is not paramount, but it should be used sparingly in the

mixing process.

Water reducers are used differently by virtually every artisan in order to meet their desired objective. Basically, everyone has

personal preferences, and that is ok.

• The more you add, the more inclined your mix will be to slump and consolidate. This is a concern if you are going up

vertical surfaces.

• How much is too much? You know you have gone beyond the threshold of water reducer dosages when you notice your

mix begin to separate, causing the heavier particles to sink to the bottom of your bucket. Depending on the severity of your

segregation, sometimes you can wait a bit for the mix to stiffen up, and remix. Sometimes you need to add more mix to

your bucket to balance out the consistency (keep your proportions in mind with this to ensure your color stays consistent).

T H E R E A R E N U M E R O U S WAY S T O M I X .

These mixes have been mixed in virtually every type of concrete and mortar mixer available. The ideal mixers are handheld

mortar mixers, particularly the CS Unitec Eibenstock EHR 12/1.3R, but less expensive mixers can be used as well. If you want

to graduate to a larger mixer, we are keen to the vertical shaft mixers carried by Imer. Get in touch with us, and we can set

you up with any of their tools. If you don’t have access to a mixer, and all you have is a hoe, is that enough? Sure, everyone

needs a workout!

R E I N F O R C E M E N T S

Each mix needs some type of reinforcement. We have a great blog post discussing the principles behind reinforcement of

artisan objects. Find that article, as well as other articles, at blog.buddyrhodes.com

One helpful hint when adding fibers to your mix in higher dosages-

If you create a scale in your mind from 1-10, where 1 is stiff and 10 is fluid, you will lose roughly 2 points in that scale when

adding fiber. So if the mix looks perfect when you start adding your fibers, you will find that the fibers make the mix a bit

too stiff.

See Page 34 to read more about our line of fiber reinforcements.

You will be hard-pressed to find a more enjoyable concrete mix to work with. The consistency of this mix can be that of clay or fluid like pancake batter. The choice is yours and depends on your project. This mix can be pressed up vertical surfaces,

trowels like butter, and can be made fluid to conform to any shape. It is ideal for the newcomer to concrete, but is also revered

by professionals as one of the easiest and more enjoyable mixes there is to work with.

CRAFTSMAN MIX

T H E P R E S S T E C H N I Q U E

The press technique is Buddy Rhodes’ signature technique. It is achieved by using his

Craftsman Mix with as little water as possible to create a dry, clay like mix. Buddy’s adventure

into concrete began with his search for a “self-hardening” clay; so it makes sense that a clay

like mix would be central to his signature technique. This mix is then hand packed into the

mold; because the mix is so dry, during placement there are a lot of voids that naturally occur

creating a veined look. This is what we want; that beautiful structural geology.

In many cases, the pressed technique is approached in a similar manner to the composition

of GFRC (see next section). A thin layer is pressed into the form, followed by a backer mix

containing AR Glass Fiber, offering the piece the necessary structural reinforcement.

Because this mix is often pressed up vertical walls, it is important to be cautious with dosing

water reducer. If too much water reducer is added, the mix will have a tendency to slump

down your vertical surfaces. Water reducer should only be used sparingly in the surface mix

to soften the mix for improved workability. You can be slightly more liberal when adding

water reducer to the backer mix to compensate for the glass fiber stiffening the mix.

• Set aside +/- 30% of your dry mix.

• Add water and water reducer to 70% of your dry ingredients. Mix until fully blended.

• After initial blending, add any pigments you are using. Blend until homogeneous.

• Slowly add the remaining dry ingredients into the mix. Blend until homogeneous.

• For Backer Mixes- Slowly add the AR Glass Fiber, blend until homogeneous. Temper

with Water Reducer as needed for desired consistency.

*Overmixing of the glass fiber can cause the fiber to break down. Do not mix glass fiber

The trowel technique is different in that you are building

your forms right side up; either in the shop or actually cast

in place at the job site. This technique is a great opportunity

to show the unique hand and skill of the craftsman. The

final finish has an almost buttery, leathery look and feel.

This is due to the trowel work bringing up the cream and

working it at different stages of curing.

Cast in place objects can also be composed with a structural

mix containing fibers, and a finished surface that does not. If

additional reinforcement is needed, we would recommend

layers of glass scrim. You can opt to use steel as a means

to reinforce, but note that rebar should not be used with

these mixes. The maximum sized steel that should be used

is 9 ga. ladder wire.

This mix contains additional aggregate in order to improve

yield and reduce shrinkage. The mix that is added to the

surface (the layer that you trowel) can be made without

fiber to improve trowelability.

You can use water reducer to taste in this application. You

can opt for a stiffer mix that will be ready for troweling

sooner, or you can opt to make a more fluid mix that will be

a touch more difficult to trowel initially, but will consolidate

along the edges more efficiently, leaving fewer air voids

along the edge.

The casting technique (Pour and vibrate) is fairly straight

forward. Build a watertight mold and pour in the concrete.

If mixed properly and vibrated well, a good clean surface

A GFRC Mix is a simple composite. GFRC typically consists of a surface layer (face/mist coat) without fiber, and a structural layer (backer mix) containing Alkali Resistant Glass Fibers. This mix can also be sprayed, poured, pressed, or troweled.

Due to the absence of larger aggregate in the mix, it is an ideal base mix to add decorative aggregates to, or to build a specific

custom mix from. In some cases the GFRC mix contains fibers throughout, such as the SCC mix. The introduction of GFRC to our industry has made possible stronger and lighter weight pieces. The mix can be used to create many different looks from a clean almost machined look to one of depth and variegation with pockets.

The consistency of the sprayable mist coat should be

similar to a milkshake. You want the mix to be fluid enough

to move through the hopper (pg 50), but not so fluid that

it slumps down your vertical formwork. This is made easier

with a little practice. For the backer mix, you can make a

fluid mix that pours over the mist coat, or you can make

a thicker mix that is applied by hand, which is especially

useful for your vertical walls. The key to the process is

making sure that there is good bonding between layers.

This is accomplished with rollers (pg 50) and timing. Make

sure that the mist coat is not so soft that your backer mix

‘breaks’ the surface and shows fiber in your finished piece,

but you don’t want the mist coat to fully dry out.

This same recipe is ideal for adding decorative aggregates

into your mix. You can add up to 10 lb of decorative

aggregates to the face/mist coat, and simply pour the mix

into your forms, followed by the backer mix just as if you

sprayed the mix.

SCC (Self Compacting/Consolidating Concrete) is a mix that

consolidates with minimal mechanical force. This mix is cast

directly into the forms, often without a face mix. This is a

great method for rapid casting of flat panels. The key to

success here is keeping in mind that the glass fibers are just

below the surface. Too much polishing and grinding on this

mix will expose fibers and be unsightly. Many people have

replaced the glass fiber with 0.6 lb of PVA100 fibers (or a

combination of PVA100 and PVA15), allowing the ability to

polish a bit further without having the fibers be as noticeable.

The most advanced mix design available is ECC (Engineered Cementitious Composite). This mix was originally developed for use in seismic zones for it’s high ductility, and has been modified to maintain performance and improve the mix characteristics.

The key components to this mix design is the particle gradation and high dosage of fiber.

From a creative standpoint, this mix can conform to highly unusual workabilties, allowing for many possible variations in finish. While this mix takes some getting used to, the professionals that use it swear by the vast possibilities and performance associated with this mix. It is very strong, it will bend before it breaks, and it produces unrivaled aesthetics and durability.

These mixes contain fiber throughout the mix, which will ultimately become part of the finish. In the case of troweled finishes,

a composition similar to those mentioned with GFRC can be utilized. Instead of eliminating fibers throughout the face mix,

you increase the loading of acrylic fibers which trowel well, and decrease the loading of PVA 100 which are far more visible in

finished surfaces.

Concrete develops strength through a process called hydration. We want concrete to be as hard and dense as possible, so we create an environment where hydration is as efficient as

possible, this is called curing. So what does this all mean?

CURING OVERVIEW

C U R I N G

When cement comes in contact with water, a chemical reaction begins to take place. This chemical reaction uses the

elements of the cement and the water, and converts these elements into a crystalline formation. This is hydration, and

this hydration is most efficient in a humid and warm environment. If humidity and heat cease to be present, the process

of hydration is stifled and slows to a snails pace, and we don’t want that to happen.

In order to see that concrete reaches its maximum potential, we create a curing environment, meaning we go through

the necessary steps to keep the concrete warm and moist for the first hours or days after casting. Moist felt, covered with

plastic to keep the moisture from escaping, often covered again by blankets or insulation to keep the heat from escaping.

This will create an environment ideal for concrete to develop strength.

So how persistent do I need to be in this step, and how long should I allow the concrete to be in this curing environment?

Whether we are talking about cured meats, or fine wine, or bourbon, or hot sauce, the mark of quality is often referenced

in the period of time that the product was allowed to develop its genius, and what kind of environment it was allowed

to do so in. Equally true, there is plenty of good things in the world that are not babied to perfection, and they serve a

perfectly good function. Ultimately this is a choice for you to make.

If you create a good curing environment, anything beyond 72 hours in the mold is beyond good. 48 hours is ideal.

24 hours is common (and can be improved using heating blankets, but only under guidelines of a pro). One note of

caution, if the concrete is in a mold that is built with a material that is absorbent (ie. melamine) extended periods

of moisture and heat can cause bad things to happen to the mold which will reflect into the finished surface.

Troweled finishes should not have plastic placed directly on them during the curing process, as it is likely to

leave discolorations.

Wait a minute! This seems complicated and these other companies say I can pull their product from the mold in 16 hours and it will be super strong.

This is true with all of our mixes as well, our concrete will

be super hard and strong the next day to move around

and polish and so on. The point is that there is chemistry

taking place, and to ignore this reality out of negligence

or ignorance would negate all the efforts made to create

something awesome! All good things have nuance,

and we want you to embrace and understand that

nuance of the material, just as an artisan winemaker

appreciates nuance in the effort of providing you with

an experience, not a bottle of Boone’s Farm.

Just a minute before you pull your concrete from the mold! Take a minute and give a little polish to the bottom of your concrete and round over the corners. This will give you

an indescribable happiness every time you, your clients, or one of your

guests does what everyone does when they address a piece of furniture, run their hand along the underside of the piece.

PROCESSING OVERVIEW

P R O C E S S I N G

Now that you have demolded, what’s next? The answer to

this question depends on 2 things, what was it you had in

mind to begin with, and what you received as the result of

casting. Certain techniques will render you with something

that needs very little processing. Other techniques will

require a bit of processing prior to being ready to seal and

finish your piece.

There will normally be voids or pinholes to be filled. This

is accomplished with the Bone Paste Plus, perhaps some

pigment, and a bit of water. The new Bone Paste Plus

includes a polymer blended in, so the acrylic additive is no

longer necessary, just add water. The paste doesn’t have

any large particles, so it is soft and smooth, allowing it to

easily fill holes and voids. This process is not dissimilar to

mudding drywall, paste is applied and polished off.

If you’ve chosen a pressed finish, now is the time to add

some character. Fill the voids with one color, or multiple

colors. The color can be similar to the base color, or it can

be complimentary or contrasting color. Fill the voids, a

little bit at a time, allowing each layer to dry fully (a few

hours depending on the temperature) before adding the

next layer. Be sure you leave a thin ‘skim coat’ of your final

color, not so much that you will have to polish forever, but

enough that you will fully fill the voids.

The most important thing to understand before polishing is the “geology” of the concrete. The finished surface is the

“cream layer” consisting of very fine materials only. As you work your way into the slab, the next layer you will find is a fine

bit of sand, the “salt and pepper layer”. Then you will begin to fully expose the sand particles, the “sand layer”. Finally you

will enter the “aggregate layer” where your sand and any additional aggregate is fully exposed. When polishing into your

concrete, you will progressively encounter these various layers.

Your choice of grinding and polishing tools, pads, and process will reflect what you are trying to accomplish. To maintain

the cream layer, lightly polish the concrete using pads that are 200 grit or higher. The higher grits produce higher sheen.

To expose your aggregate, begin grinding with more aggressive grit pads, progressing to higher grits until reaching the

desired sheen and exposure.

P O L I S H I N G - W E T O R D RY ?

Dry polishing is likely to produce a higher sheen, even at lower grits, and it will produce a dust that is not good for your

health. Wet polishing is messier, but safer for your health and it produces a sheen that is more true to the grits you are

using. Careful attention should be given when using electric tools in a wet environment.

As for tools, you can use a wet/dry variable speed polisher, or a random orbital polisher. Variable speed polishers and

grinders are best for aggressive grinding, and are faster with polishing. The fastest option is our Planetary Polisher which

utilizes three grinding heads working in unison. It is a great tool for a very good price. It will speed up the process on

large pieces to a remarkable degree, but you will still need to finish the border and edges with a polisher. Random Orbital

Sanders are nice since they are less likely to leave “swirl marks” in the way that polishers do. It is a slower and more

methodical process, but it is easier for containing water in the case of wet polishing or dust in the case of dry polishing.

Most often, you will want to do a bit of grinding and polishing. This will allow you to clean up edges and remove any casting residue, or it could allow you to fully expose a glass aggregate

you have added to the mix, all depending on how you go about polishing.

POLISHING OVERVIEW

The Non Woven Abrasive Pads are

a great finishing pad. They help

remove swirl marks, residue, and

slurry that may not have made it off

during your process.

For detail work, the Hand Polishing

Pads are ideal. Best if used wet, these

allow you to easily polish edges and

hard to reach spots, and for small

objects can be all you need to use.

After polishing, clean off all residue,

water, and dust. Be sure to dry

everything off so that the concrete

is ready for the next step (whether

etching, glazing, or sealing).

Etching is a process of washing and profiling the concrete with an acidic, or non acidic solution. In the case of a

“full treatment”, the entire surface is flooded with water, then an acidic solution is applied. The concentration of the

acidic solution varies based on the desired texture and working time. Several rinses will neutralize the acid, follow this

with a wet buffing using Non Woven Abrasives (pg 52).

W H Y E T C H ?

Etching opens up the surface so that the sealer is more easily received, it flattens the sheen, it also allows ‘tooth’

for materials like Glazes. While it is not necessary, and in many situations it is not practical, it is a useful technique in

many situations.

A unique and versatile finishing technique used by many professionals is etching the concrete. Etching can be done in conjunction with stencils to produce designs, or an entire

surface treatment. ETCHING OVERVIEW

Dice Stencils are applied to concrete cubes in preparation

for etching and glazing.

Following being etched, and having the glaze added,

the stencils were removed, and the dice were further

antiqued with glaze.

• The material can be applied over polished concrete, but it will be far more durable and

rich in concrete that is matted or etched.

• When the glaze is wet, it is active. When you rub across a still wet area, it will remove the

material. This can either be a cool effect, or a precursor to cursing.

• The longer the glaze has been dried, the harder it will be to remove. Soon after

drying, it can be removed with a wet towel, if removed the next day it will require

diamond abrasives.

• Apply thin layers. You will end up with a more durable finish applying multiple thin layers

as opposed to one thick layer.

• The first coat is the hardest. When the concrete is thirsty, it is tough to keep from getting

streaks. You can dilute the glaze with 50% distilled water. If you want to make an even

more dilute solution, you can make a base of 25% CH Prep, 25% FS Sealz, and 50% water.

With this formula, you can make as dilute a glaze as you want. The further the dilution

on your first layer, the more forgiving.

• While this is compatible with many different sealers, and it in fact, enhances the

performance of many sealers, it should be tested with non BR Sealers.

• You can combine these colors to make virtually any color you want. This is very useful if

you have concrete colors you want to shift the color of, or if you simply want to enhance

a color. If you want help formulating a color to suit a particular situation, let us know and

we can help you in that process.

• A dilute version of the Black Glaze is a very effective way to enhance virtually any color.

In many cases, this will produce the most durable ‘wet look’ effect you will find.

• Protect your piece with sealer. These Glazes are fully UV stable, and will stand up to a fair

bit of abrasion, but sealer will help protect them for the long haul.

Glazes can be used to produce color enhancements, whether to produce a full color treatment, or to shade the color in one direction or the other. Glazes are a water based color treatment

that will produce a consistent color regardless of the state of the concrete.

GLAZING OVERVIEW

Whether applied over stencils to create patterns, used as a tint, or applied to create variation and movement, the

possibilities are endless. There are many techniques for application, which include rubbing with a microfiber cloth,

dabbing with a cloth, applying with a roller or brush, and so on.

Concrete is inherently a porous material and often needs to be sealed for particular environments and uses. There are a multitude of systems and products on the market used for sealing concrete. There is no magic answer, every sealer and system

has pros and cons. We offer 2 systems for sealing concrete, developed after many years of experience, trial and error, and

observation. Like most things we value, concrete requires care and attention. We love concrete because of its handcrafted nature, ageless beauty, and ability to develop its own life story. If a carefree and sterile material is what you are wanting, you are in the wrong place.

SEALING OVERVIEW

Buddy’s system is a combination of penetrating sealer, a satin acrylic sealer, and beeswax. The penetrating sealer is a primer, the satin sealer is a protective coat that provides decent stain

resistance, and the wax is an optional maintenance step.

BR SYSTEM

Do you need to use all three? Not necessarily, but here is the scoop. The penetrating sealer provides a primer that will

improve stain resistance and repels liquids. This adds further protection if there is a failure of the satin sealer, or there is

prolonged exposure to staining agents. The satin sealer provides your main source of protection, particularly against acids.

The wax is an optional step, it provides a sacrificial layer, and allows for an easy process for rejuvenating your concrete. The

only downside to the wax is that it is hard to remove if you want to reseal your countertops. We have a great 3 part blog post

about this if you visit blog.buddyrhodes.com

This sealer system is easy to apply, easy to repair, and provides good protection, making it a great choice for many situations.

ICT is a hybrid reactive sealing system. What the heck does that mean? Reactive sealers penetrate into the concrete, convert

weak material into crystalline structures, and block the pore structure of the concrete from penetration of foreign materials.

It does all this while maintaining breathability, so you don’t have the concern of the sealer “lifting” if moisture penetrates.

The hybrid part of the equation is that ICT also includes advanced technology to improve the stain resistance of the concrete.

This sealer is the highest performing reactive sealer on the marketplace, and has been developed over many years specifically

for artisan concrete applications.

Here’s the catch- ICT relies on the concrete you are applying it on. This is not a classic topical or penetrating sealer that

cures to itself and sits on or in the concrete. This means that the curing, processing, and application of the sealer happens

thoughtfully to increase the effectiveness of the system.

When well applied to high performance concrete, there is not a sealer in the market that can compete with ICT. This is a popular choice among professionals, but it requires close

attention throughout the entire process of creating and finishing concrete. For more

details, a full application guide and application video can be found on our website.

E C C B L E N D E D M I X is designed using the most advanced concrete mix design theory

currently available. This mix is designed to produce tremendous ductility and tensile capacity,

and is more likely to bend than break. This mix produces a very dense and strong concrete.

Boasting impressive strengths, the habits of workability with these mixes open up unique

and interesting possibilities as well. This mix can create workabilities that range from taffy to

clay to pancake batter. ECC mixes require careful care be given through the mixing process

to ensure success, and should be carefully considered by one unfamiliar with the material.

ECC is reinforced with high loadings of fiber which are carefully chosen so as not to affect

the finished visual aesthetic (see recipes). The mix uses all white ingredients, naturally curing

to a bone white. The mix can be pigmented to any color using the BR Color Series, Custom

blend. It is a dry white multi-component material that can also replace pozzolan or metakaolin

material in certain mix designs. Ideal for use in GFRC mist and backer coats, or as a water

reducer in any concrete formulation. This unique blend offers both water reducing capability

as well as pozzolanic benefits, improving the workability, strength and durability of concrete.

WR 205 is 1/10th as potent as WR 310.

Packaged in 5 lb containers and 30 lb. bags

(Formerly SuperSealz)

Dosage Rate: 0.5- 10% of Cement Weight

WR 205 has a wide range of dosage rates, depending on the application and mix. In GFRC mist coats, use the lower end of

the dosage range, typically 2-6 grams per lb of cement used. In wet-cast mixes, dosage ranges can approach 10% of the

cement weight. The ultimate indicator of an overdosage of plasticizer is segregation of the mix. Make test batches prior to

production to ensure optimum dosage.

WAT E R R E D U C E R 3 1 0 is a unique and powerful powdered polycarboxylate plasticizer

designed to significantly reduce water requirements. This is an incredibly potent plasticizer,

and must be carefully managed to avoid over plasticizing which will lead to segregation.

WR 310 has 10 times the potency of WR 205.

Packaged in 4 lb and 20 lb Containers

(Formerly Super Flowz)

Dosage Rate: 0.05%- 1.5% of Cement Weight

A L K A L I R E S I S TA N T G L A S S F I B E R S are designed specifically for use in

concrete. Alkali Resistant (AR) Glass fibers are manufactured from a specially formulated glass

composition with an optimum level of Zirconia (ZrO2) to be suitable for use in concrete. These

AR fibers are designed to resist breaking down during mixing and processing so that it stays

basically as a bundle of filaments. These products are particularly suitable for Premix GFRC

and other mortar and concrete reinforcement applications. AR glass fiber have high tensile

strength and modulus, do not rust like steel, and are easily incorporated into concrete mixes.

Our fibers are 19mm (3/4”) in length with, 200 filaments per stand, with a filament diameter of 18 microns. These fibers

impart strength in a concrete unit due to their bundled nature. Due to the fact that they are bundled fibers, they are more

likely to show up in finished surfaces if precautions are not taken. See recipes section to read more about this.

Packaged in 1 lb, 12 lb, and 44 lb bags

A L K A L I R E S I S TA N T G L A S S S C R I M is an oriented fiber fabric. Scrims are

particularly used in conjunction with fiber reinforced mixes to provide additional tensile

strengths in locations that will experience point specific strain. When they are placed in the

tensile regions of the product they can significantly increase the flexural strength of the

composite. This scrim is produced with 10mm X 10mm webbing, and comes in 40” wide rolls. It is available in lengths of 15’,

50’, 100’, and 300’

P VA F I B E R S (polyvinyl alcohol) are high-performance reinforcement fibers for

concrete and mortar. PVA fibers are well-suited for a wide variety of applications because of their

superior crack-fighting properties, high modulus of elasticity, excellent tensile and molecular

bond strength, and high resistance to alkali, UV, chemicals, fatigue and abrasion. PVA fibers

are unique in their ability to create a molecular bond with mortar and concrete that is 300%

greater than other fibers.

These are monofilament fibers that are available in 3 different deniers (diameter of the fiber)- 7, 15, and 100. The fiber lengths

are 1/4” (PVA7), 3/8” (PVA15), and 1/2” (PVA100). Due to the fine nature of these fibers, and the fact that they disperse into

monofilament fibers, they are less likely to be visible in a finished surface. How visible they are in relation to each other is in

direct proportion to their various diameters (7 is least visible, 100 is most visible). Equally true, the smaller the fiber, the more

fibers there are for any given unit of measure, the more likely they are to choke mixes at higher dosage rates. This is why the

PVA100 fibers are dosed at higher rates in the more flowable mixes than are the PVA15.

Packaged in 1 lb bags

A C RY L I C F I B E R - A C 5 0 is a fiber reinforcement for concrete that enhances

the performance and durability of concrete, adding years to its useful life. This modified

polymer fiber, made of staple fiber, reduces shrinkage cracks and provides reinforcement.

Reduces permeability, increases impact and abrasion resistance, and improves tensile and

flexural properties of concrete mixes.

These fibers are the least visible of our fiber offerings, and they are the easiest fiber to trowel,

making them especially useful for troweled surfaces.

HOW TO ORDER CUSTOM COLOR All colors are formulated as a percentage of the Total Cementitious Binder (TCB) of your mix. TCB is a combination of the

cementitious materials in the mix, including all cement and Pozzolans. The TCB is multiplied by the “Loading Percentage

Rate”, listed with each of the color swatches, this determines how much pigment needs to be added to your mix.

H E R E ’ S H O W I T W O R K S -

• Determine your color - You are a big fan of swimming, so you pick “2058-30 Deep Ocean” as your color. Look at the

swatch and you will see a little % number on the swatch, this is your loading rate(LR). It has a loading rate of 8.55% or .0855

• Determine your TCB- Your mix is a blend of cement, pozzolan (maybe), sand, aggregate, and so on. For the sake of

example, we will say that your mix has 10 lb of cement, and 2 lb of VCAS as a pozzolan. So, Your TCB is 12lb

• Determine your Number of Batches - How much coverage will you get with your mix? This will determine how many

batches of concrete you will need to make, which will tell you how much pigment you need. Let’s say your mix covers 2 sq

ft at 1.5” thick, and the piece you are making is 10 sq ft and 1.5” thick. You will need 5 batches of mix.

• Round up - It is good practice to add 10% to that amount for slurry, spillage, and test samples. To add 10%, multiply by 1.1

• Round up one more time - These pigments are sold incrementally by the pound.

• Determine the cost - Each color has a TYPE # ,and each number has a cost listed. You picked Deep Ocean, which is a Type

II color that costs $15.80 per lb when purchased in increments of 5 lb or more.

Do you have a color you have in mind that you want to match? We can do that for you. You name the color, and we will match it for you. One simple way to do that is to reference Benjamin MooreTM colors. Our in-house color lab can match any Benjamin

MooreTM color, allowing your project seamless color expression in any artisan concrete project.

We have outlayed 200 standard custom colors that have been preformulated, which you will see swatches for in the following pages. If you don’t find what you are after in those 200 colors, our lab will custom formulate the color you want.

CUSTOMCOLOR

12 (TCB) x .0855 (LR) = 1.026

1.026 x 1.1 = 1.1286

1.1286 x 5 (batches) = 5.645 (6lb needed)

6 x $15.80 = $94.80

You will need 6 lb of pigment, and it will cost $94.80.

You are ready to order.

If you are using the blends we have listed in our recipes, we

can make this simple for you.

HERE ARE THE AMOUNTS OF TCB PER 50 LB OF THE

BLENDS FOUND IN OUR MIXES.

If you follow the recipes given to create your own blends,

the same will be true.

I am using an 80 lb bag of an off the shelf product. What is my TCB? Who knows? Most “off the shelf” products are proprietary,

and the manufactures do not disclose how much cement is

in the product. So the amount of cement you get can range

wildly. We use 20lb (25%) as our guess more often than not.

Also keep in mind that most of these mixes are not white,

but rather grey, so you will not get a perfect color match.

I am using mix out of a Ready Mix truck, how do I know what to add? Most ready mix applications refer to their mixes as “x”

Sack Mixes. The “x” in question is the number of sacks of

Portland cement used to make one yard of concrete. You

would multiply that amount (“x”) by 94.4 lb (the number

of pounds of cement in a bag). Then multiply that by the

number of yards of concrete in your truck. Keep in mind that

most ready mix applications are made with grey cement.

So what if I want a color, but I am stuck with using grey cement? There are many colors not possible in grey cement,

particularly light, and many bright, colors. That said, you can

have custom blends made using grey cement, no different

than if you were sending in a custom tile (pg 43). If you want

to get it real close, then you are wise to send us the cement

you are using, as grey cement color varies wildly from region

to region.

I am using another company’s countertop mix, does that make me bad?

Of course not, but we can help you make that mix a custom

color. We have formulated with most of the competitive

products on the market, and are glad to assist you.

I have another concrete project to pigment, will this work?It doesn’t matter if it is a swimming pool plaster, an overlay,

a carvable mix, or a driveway, if it is made from cement, we

can make you a color to your liking! Just shoot us an email, or

give us a call, with what you are hoping to accomplish, and

we will be glad to assist you.

The color you have in mind is not so simple?

We can match a physical color reference, for example a

fabric swatch, a piece of tile, or perhaps even a river rock.

Call us and we will help you achieve your desired color.

Glazes are a water based coloring treatment for use on cured concrete. They achieve the desired appearance with nano sized pigment particles that penetrate deeply into the concrete surface. The carrier reacts with the concrete to lock in the particles.

Glazes can be used in a multitude of ways, producing subtle tints or dramatic color variation. See Glazes

section for tips and tricks, application methods, and dilution rates.

GLAZES

Available in a wide color range, these colors can be

blended together to produce a wide array of shades.

Black, Blue, Leather, Red, Maple, Olive, Umber, Green,

Yellow, and White Glazes are UV stable, and do not

contain acids, metal salts, or acetone.

BR SYSTEMB U D DY R H O D E S P E N E T R AT I N G S E A L E R is an aqueous copolymer chemically

reactive dispersion that provides a durable and transparent protective barrier against oil and

water on concrete surfaces. This new chemistry offers invisible protection to both dense

and porous concrete and is extremely effective as a water sealer. It is used as the primer as

the first step in the Buddy Rhodes sealing system. This product is water based and food safe.

Packaged in Quarts

B U D DY R H O D E S S AT I N S E A L E R is the latest in water based acrylic micro

emulsion technology for concrete countertops. It creates a barrier coating that seals and

protects while enhancing the natural beauty of the concrete. The sealer will resist most stains

up to 72 hours; however, oils and solvents should be wiped up promptly. This is the second

step in the Buddy Rhodes sealing system. This product is water based and food safe.

Packaged in Quarts

B U D DY R H O D E S B E E S WA X helps resist stains and enhances the color of concrete

surfaces. It may be used for maintenance over the life of the concrete project. This is hard

wax “puck” that is rubbed across the surface, and buffed by hand or mechanically.

Packaged in 12 oz Jars

ICT SYSTEMC H P R E P is our premium reactive densifier and conditioner. CH Prep seals and densifies

the micro-channels to improve the abrasion resistance of the concrete. Using CH Prep as part

of sealing process works to establish an initial concentration gradient to bring free reactive

hydration byproducts to the surface of the concrete, enabling better reactions, and setting

the stage for FS Seals. CH Prep is the first step of the ICT sealing system. CH Prep can also

be incorporated in the processing stages of concrete to densify the surface for polishing,

and begin the sealing process. CH Prep can be used as a replacement for the Buddy Rhodes’

Penetrating sealer, providing better protection with minimal effort.

Packaged in Quarts and Gallons

F S S E A L S is hybrid reactive sealer with a micro acrylic emulsion, representing the most

advanced sealing technology available. FS Seals provides additional acid and stain protection,

will not peel or scratch. FS Seals is the second step in the ICT process.

Packaged in Quarts

C L E A N & S E T is the final step in the ICT sealing system. It accelerates the curing of ICT,

and is also effective as a cleaner for concrete sealed with ICT. Clean & Set is a pure acetic acid,

and should be diluted with 3 parts water, 1 part C&S.

We carry a range of abrasive materials to address grinding and polishing concrete. Visit our website for the entire list of abrasive materials.http://www.buddyrhodes.com/abrasives-and-pads/

B R H A N D P O L I S H I N G PA D S are electroplated diamond polishing pads manufactured to polish and grind hard

material such as concrete, glass and stone with ease. These pads are manufactured using an ergonomically designed, semi-

pliable foam backing with ambidextrous finger grips. The diamond surface has been extended to fill the entire face of the

pad allowing the diamond material to meet the edges of the pad without any foam buffers. Advanced electroplated bonding

procedures allow multiple embedded layers of diamond substrate for superior wear resistance. Highly uniformed diamond

bedding prevents chipping when working delicate materials while producing a uniformed grinding and polishing profile.

Effective for detail and edge polishing.

If you are interested in creating your own High Performance mixes from scratch, we have a range of raw materials to assist you in that process. This is a resource for artisans

and professionals with experience in concrete materials. High quality pozzolans, polymers, cementitious materials, and other admixtures- we have the building blocks for you to build your

own mix. If you are using our mixes, or admixtures, you don’t need to add these as they are already built into the formulation, but you can decide to enhance properties of the mix using these raw ingredients where you see fit.

L I Q U I D P O LY M E R P L U S is an acrylic emulsion polymer specifically developed for use in High Performance Concrete.

This multi-component polymer enhances the durability of concrete by improving the concrete’s hydration through the curing

process, increasing density, flexural strength, color fastness, and overall durability in the finished concrete. This is an ideal

GFRC curing polymer.

Packaged in 40 lb pails, Totes

(Formerly Liquid Z+)

P O W D E R E D P O LY M E R 1 2 1 0 is a dry powdered polymer specifically developed for use in High Performance

Concrete. Much like the Liquid Polymer Plus, the 1210 enhances the durability of concrete by improving the concrete’s

hydration through the curing process, increasing density, flexural strength, color fastness, and overall durability in the

finished concrete. This polymer is favored by many due to reduced shipping costs, no risk of freezing in transport, and

reduced air in finished concrete surfaces.

Packaged in 10 lb Pails, 25 lb Pails

(Formerly PRA1210)

B U Z Z I U N I C E M C S A Additive is a hydraulic, cementitious binder, high in Calcium Aluminum Sulfate Crystals. When

used with Portland cement concrete, CSA accelerates the curing time and enhances the physical and chemical properties of

the mix. This is the basis for rapid setting mix designs.

Packaged in 50 lb Bags

Sold by the bag, pallet, or truckload

V C A S is a pure white pozzolan. Pozzolans are value-added supplementary cementing materials that exhibit pozzolanic

activity. Comparable to fumed silica and metakaolin when tested in accordance with ASTM C618 and ASTM C1240.

Packaged in 50 lb Bags

Sold by the bag, pallet, or truckload

U LT R A S E A L Z ™ is a multi-component blend of slag cement, pozzolan, plasticizer, E+ and other chemical and mineral

admixtures that when added to Portland cement, produces high performance and acid resistant concrete.

W E 1 0 1 is a white powder used to control and delay initial curing of concrete mixes, especially at elevated casting

temperatures or where extended work time is required. In addition to being used as a set retarder, WE101 also increases

ultimate compressive strength and other physical properties.

Packaged in 1 lb, 5 lb and 25 lb Pails

E+ (Electrolytes) technology increases density and improves vibration rheology. E+ charges the cement particles in a mix,

allows the particle to reach a higher level of hydration, thus resulting is a stronger concrete mix. E+ also improves depth of

color, imparts acid resistance and aids in the sealing process when reactive sealer is used.

Packaged by the pound.

N YA D G (wollastonite) increases the strength in a number of construction based materials while improving dimensional

stability and resistance to drying and freeze-thaw cracking. In addition, the availability of calcium ions from the wollastonite

mineral structure enables decreased setting times in some systems and can act as a counter to acidic media due to the

mineral’s high pH.

Once a year, a special thing happens in the outskirts of Atlanta in our R&D studio. We call it EPIC. What is EPIC? It defies

easy description. It is an experience that is hard to measure, and for many who have attended, it is not a stretch to say it

was life changing. It is about concrete. It is about community. It is about camaraderie. It is about communion. It is about

communication. We understand that this is an incredibly vague explanation, one that makes very little sense. All we can tell

you is this- stay tuned for the announcement for next year’s EPIC, because tickets sell out fast. Once you see what it is, and

you miss it, you will spend the following year in a deep depression. Find details at http://www.buddyrhodes.com/epic/
