The organisation of trade fairs and business meetings for the construction industry is part of a long-standing tradition of MTP. In January, the trade fair centre, already existing for over 90 years, is besieged with professionals who want to become familiar with a wide range of products and services offered by the international mar-ket of manufacturers and suppliers of materials, technologies and construction services. No won-der, because more than 1,400 exhibitors from over 30 countries present their offer at BUDMA, BU-MASZ, CBS and GLASS fairs held in the capital city of Wielkopolska, in the area exceeding 60,000 m2. The advantages of this leading meeting in Central and Eastern Europe consist not only in the above-mentioned statistics guaranteeing satisfaction from the visit, but also an extensive program of industry-related conferences and seminars.

ble development of a healthy and functional public space accessible to all generations. According to Violetta Pastwa, director of the fair, the construction fair in Poznań is to play an active role in determining the directions of development of the construction industry, being an effective platform for exhibitors to promote their innovative products, and the largest and most complementary exhibition of the construction technology of tomorrow for the public. BUDMA 2012 is first of all to free the imagination and go far beyond the common schemes and standard actions. Therefore, the program will include a series of new events addressed to key groups of visitors, including seminars, training courses, workshops and inspirational special zones.

█ Strada di Architettura

One of the innovative projects at Budma 2012 is Strada di Architettura that will help architects and designers reach innovative materials and unique technologies. Strada di Architettura is the path of exploring the latest Polish, but also international architecture, leading through all the exhibition areas to places of organisation of events for architects. Exhibitions of works, workshop zones, conference rooms and se-lected exhibitor stands will create a tour for architects in the map of Budma 2012. Strada di Architettura will combine three zones located in distant parts of the exhibition (knowledge, inspiration, experience), in which events with the participation of invited architects, inclu-ding numerous exhibitions, will be held.

█ House of the Future?

As part of special exhibition at BUDSHOW 2012, an eco-friendly, modern house designed by greenCUBE_127, awarded in a national archi-tectural competition „Your Home - Dialogue with Tradition”, will be built. The house is an example of modern and multidimensional design of architecture sustainable in terms of economy and environment. Through this pro-ject the organisers want to show modern and contemporary architecture adapted to the ne-eds of contemporary investors and prove that it is possible to design and build a house in the standard of passive energy on a limited budget while maintaining the appropriate technologi-cal regimes. The house is distinguished by low rates of built-in energy (used to manufacture building materials), final energy (consumed for heating the interior and water), and primary energy (consumed by the building).

█ About revitalisation

The themes of the fair, which include large-size, industrial and specialised structures, will focus in particular on modernisation of existing buildings and revitalisation of historic buildings. Parti-

cipants of the next edition will be able to learn about both the economic and legal aspects of revitalisation as well as the latest products and technologies used for modernisation of existing buildings (e.g. monuments, old housing estates built of prefabricated concrete, public buildings).

Budma offers a series of seminars organised in cooperation with the Association of Con-servators of Monuments, which will feature a  presentation of the conditions governing the implementation of revitalisation projects as well as the best recommended techniques and tech-nologies for renovation of old and revitalisation of neglected architectural objects. Participants of the seminars will be also able to learn about the possibilities of co-financing of revitalisation programmes from EU funds. The seminars will be accompanied by an exhibition featuring spe-

cialist building and conservation materials used for revitalisation. These will be both finished products, such as joinery or interior design ele-ments, and devices, for example for drying wet facilities. Contractors and design companies as well as financial institutions and consulting se-rvices will also present their offer.

█ Equipment for effective con-struction

In parallel to BUDMA Fair, BUMASZ International Fair of Construction and Road Building Machi-nes, Vehicles and Equipment will be held. Ano-ther edition of the biennial fair will focus on the development of professional contacts between market participants. It is difficult to imagine an effective implementation of any construction project without the use of specialised equipment,

For more information visit:www.budma.pl www.bumasz.plwww.cbs.mtp.plwww.glass.mtp.pl

regardless of whether it concerns construction of a residential building, a public building or road infrastructure. The January BUMASZ fair is an excellent opportunity to see at one place and time the latest solutions supporting construction pro-fessionals in everyday work. The topics of the fair will include specialised vehicles and construction machinery, but also the necessary additional equ-ipment, accessories and services.

The fair will be attended by nearly 200 leading companies, which are the world’s leading ma-nufacturers and suppliers of construction equip-ment. Their offer is addressed primarily to specia-lists representing construction and repair, traffic engineering, construction machinery and equip-ment rental companies, developers, district direc-torates of public roads, investment departments of cities and counties as well as design offices.

█ With a view to building Polish sport

CBS Fair, which is organised jointly by the Polish Sports Infrastructure Club and MTP, is reflec-ted in the positive feedback of the participants of the previous editions of this event unique in Central and Eastern Europe. As in previous years, in 2012, CBS fair will hover around topics related to planning, design, construction, mo-dernisation, fitout and management of sport and recreation infrastructure. The fair is an invaluable source of information for professio-nals associated with these areas, who are acti-vely looking for the latest and best solutions on the market. We cordially invite you to participa-te in GLASS Glass Industry Fair 2012 to be held on 24-27 January 2012 in Poznań.

█ GLASS 2012

GLASS 2012 is a new project in a wide range of trade fair events organised by MTP. Through the presentation of unique methods of use of glass products, the organisers want to create in Poland a fashion for glass as an eco-friendly material, with many applications, so much needed in the Polish market.

GLASS is a continuation of GLASS&STONE pro-ject of 2008. Talks and meetings with exhibitors and visitors have contributed to the creation of an innovative formula of the fair. The fair will feature a presentation of two forms of glass: flat glass - used in construction and industry, and decorative glass - used by architects and interior designers. ←

In the pantheon of stars of architecture

The participation of outstanding authorities from the world of architecture is something that distinguishes BUDMA Fair in Poznań. The fair will be attended by

special guests who will display their works and share their experiences.

{ Dietmar Eberle }Prof. Dietmar Berle is an architect, co-founder of Baumschlager Eber-le Architects office with branches in Vienna, Zurich and Beijing. 300 works of the studio include housing units in Vienna, expansion of the airport in Vienna or the WHO headquarters in Geneva. Professor Eberle teaches at the famous ETH in Zurich. ←

{ Aron Losonczi }He graduated from the Royal University of Fine Arts in Stockholm. In 2001, he patented the so-called Litracon – transparent con-crete. This product was awarded with the RedDot Design Award – one of the major awards in the field of design. ←

{ Odile Decq }One of the most colourful and most successful stars of contemporary French architecture. Decq, university professor at Special Architecture School of Paris, creates at her own Odile Decq et Benoit Cornette studio, which she founded together with his partner in 1985. She is famous for her daring designs of buildings, especially museums around the world, in which she implements the concept of hyper-tension. Her works are characterised by spacious interiors dynamically flowing through the entire building, which are only crossed by hanging bridges and terra-ces of stairs. Important elements of her designs are sharp, colourful accents, with fiery red as her favourite. ←

Strada di Architettura is the path of exploring the most interesting sites at BUDMA Fair. It links three zones located in distant parts of the exhibition (KNOWLEDGE, INSPIRATION, EXPERIENCE).

The INSPIRATION zone will feature exhibitions of designs of such celebrities as Odile Decq, Wolf Prix interesting from the perspective of architects. They will also be able to see an exhi-bition of revitalised buildings in Wielkopolska, an exhibition of works of eminent designers invited to participate in the project entitled Visions of Architecture of Tomorrow, products awarded in the competition TopDesign Award. The program of seminars, which will include a discussion of acoustics in buildings or revita-lisation – in terms of modern techniques and technologies of restoration and protection of buildings, promises to be interesting. Lectures will be given by such celebrities of modern ar-chitecture as Dietmar Berle, Aron Losonczi, or the previously mentioned Odile Decq.

█ Innovation at your fingertips

Strada di Architettura is also the presentation of interesting products prepared for professionals from the architecture and design industry. They are associated with a particularly innovative ap-proach to design and enable the implementation of previously infeasible visions:

A walk around innovations of tomorrow

One of the innovative projects at Budma 2012 is Strada di Architettura that is to help architects and designers each innovative materials and unique technologies of tomorrow.

▐ FGH-V Galeria Balcony window

FGH-V Galeria balcony window is an innova-tive, large roof window, whose open sashes create a  balcony. The upper sash can be li-fted up to 45°. Side barriers are integrated into the bottom sash and slide out during opening. When closing the lower sash, bal-cony barriers are hiding in the window, thus they are not visible above the roof. Concealed under the window flashing elements, they do not collect dirt or spoil the appearance of the roof. Upon opening the balcony, barriers are always dry and clean, which ensures lon – asting, trouble-free operation. The window is operated using a handle located at the bot-tom of the upper sash. The handle is always at your fingertips, so the window can be fre-ely opened and closed. The lower sash can be tilted forwards. It is closed by releasing the locks located on the frame barriers.

Both upper and bottom sashes are equipped with safe P2 glazing units as standard with la-minated inner panes and toughened outer pa-nes with easy maintenance coating. Inside the laminated panes there are two PVB film layers and any possible breakdown of the inner pane does not pose any threat (pieces of glass rema-

in on the film). FGH-V Galeria window makes use of an innovative topSafe window structure reinforcement system, which provides it with increased resistance to burglary. The window is equipped with an automatic air inlet V40P en-suring the optimum amount of fresh air in the room and energy savings. The window is instal-led in the roof structure without L-shaped wall with a slope of 35-55°.

BUDMA news | 2012 ■11

Energy efficiency is now one of the means of achieving the objectives of the European Union. The analysis of the current condition of buildings in terms of their energy intensity seems to be the starting point of strategic planning. Energy certification, prepared on the basis of technical data, provides information on energy perfor-mance of buildings. In addition, it is the source of information that is needed to estimate and ana-lyse the condition of facilities in Poland in terms of energy efficiency.

– We should therefore systematically analyse the condition of buildings in Poland to contribute to the actual improvement of energy efficiency of facilities. Moreover, both the implementation of the Directive as well as improvement of the law require all the European countries to perform a regular analysis, while having to verify the achie-vement of the assumed objectives – says Piotr Pawlak, Manager Energy Design Center from Rockwool Polska.

█ Good direction, but still too slow

The analysis of the condition of buildings in Poland in terms of energy efficiency is a very needed and valuable solution that is neces-sary not only to monitor the energy efficiency of buildings, but also in the area directly sup-ported by the state budget, namely through the Act on support for thermal modernisa-tion and repairs, it may serve as a  source of information about the number of homes and square metres of usable space that was subject to thermal modernisation. Therefore, data on the improvement of energy efficiency, but also the level of energy consumption and emissions savings will be provided.

Certified means more economicalEnergy certification has been used in Poland for less than three years. During this period, we managed to make it an obligation in relation to new buildings, educate a big number of certifiers as well as familiarise the public with the concept of energy performance. Has it brought the desired practical effect in the form of improvement of the energy intensity of Polish buildings? Are buildings with a low energy demand built today, as we are already aware of energy efficiency? The information on buildings certified in 2009-2011 allows, above all, to take a  look at the actual condition of buildings in Poland. It also allows to check whether the popular en-ergy efficiency is actually realised. With the data from more than 60,000 buildings (pro-vided by BuildDesk Polska) we can see that fa-cilities are changing slightly. In view to the re-vision of the Directive on energy performance of buildings, this fact seems to be the more dangerous that upon the transition from the currently constructed (and existing?) facili-ties to almost zero energy buildings it can and will be a major impediment. It is not so much a  question of technology as making inves-tors, architects and contractors aware of this requirement (the need to design and erect low-emission buildings). It is therefore good to look at the trends of changes in the energy performance of buildings and take steps in order to take account of and implement the requirement for construction of nearly zero energy buildings by 2020.

█ Energy efficiency and its profitability

More and more of those planning to build a  house take into account the subsequent costs of its operation. Unfortunately, these actions lack a  detailed energy and economic analysis, justifying the choice of available technologies and the correct solutions.

The complexity of the construction process, legal conditions and, above all, investors’ guidelines require architects and designers to adopt a new, more comprehensive approach to the construction process. More and more often, investors’ specifications apply not only

to the facility itself and its visual aspects, but also to its foundation, spatial architecture and future costs of operation. The increasing flexibility in designing a  facility determines the need to have adequate qualifications and analyse a number of structural, technological and financial aspects. This requires extensive knowledge, very often reaching beyond the area of design and construction.

Currently, the construction process aims at creating highly energy efficient or even pas-sive buildings. But buildings that are provided with expensive solutions at the investment stage very often exceed the financial capabili-ties of the investor. An alternative solution is the building proposed by Rockwool – optimal in terms of power and economy. The design of the facility is not only subject to an energy efficiency analysis, but also costs associated with the investment and the payback period during its operation are taken into account.

█ Worth visiting

Practitioners from the construction industry can participate in the Third Energy Efficient and Passive Construction Forum. The two-day seminar block (the third and fourth day of BUDMA fair) will feature a detailed discussion of issues relating to sustainable architecture, modern materials and technology as well as examples of passive construction carried out in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The panel on the campaign entitled “Innovative Poland 2010-2020. Highly energy-efficient buildings in each municipality and city”, which is addressed to the local authorities, promises to be very interesting. ←

The publication of over a hundred pages, published in a red, hard cover, contains ten chapters featuring essays of an eminent authority in the field of archi-tecture. The author, in a quite vivid, almost poetic way, describes his experience with design:

“[...] I paid no heed to the custom of carpenters, according to which the back furniture is finished with less resources, because no one can see it. At last I could, at least a little bit, round off its edges and no one corrected me. I gently and quickly mo-ved a sanding block along the edges of finished wooden components to level their uncomforta-ble, cutting sharpness and obtain the elegance of a subtle line. I hardly touched the corners where three edges converge. I tightly fitted small cabinet door into the arm of the face so that it closes ti-ghtly with mild resistance of friction and a hardly audible sound of air [...]”

Tenderly about the art of creationWhat is architecture? How to feel and treat it? These issues are discussed by Peter Zumthor – the winner of the prestigious Pritzker Prize, in his book published by KARAKTER publishing house, entitled “Thinking Architecture”.

In Zumthor’s view, architecture is a combination of art, culture and reflection stemming from life experience. We learn from it that the author perceives buildings as a testimony of the human ability to combine things, and makes use of the knowledge of their production in his daily work.

“[...] architecture has its own area of existence. It has an extremely physical relationship with life. In my view, it is generally neither the message nor the sign, but the setting and the background for the passing of life, a fragile vessel for the rhythm of steps on the floor, for concentration at work, for quiet sleep [...]”

“Thinking Architecture” is a reflective book, which is worth having on your shelf. Auto-graphed copies will be available soon. Details on BUDMA profile on Facebook. ←

Poznań – city of know how

Poznań is a city of a very rich history – from the earliest times of the Middle Ages until nowadays. Benefiting from the cen-turies of prosperity and overcoming various obstacles in its

history, the city has grown to be fully modern and one of the key economic centres of the country. Poznań is the city of

industry, trade, culture, higher education and science.

█ Where seven routes cross

Today Poznań lies on one of the most impor-tant transit corridors connecting Western and Eastern Europe, halfway between Berlin and Warsaw. This is the crossing point of seven important interregional and international routes. The Ławica Airport provides passen-ger and freight transport services, with regu-lar connections to European metropolises: London, Paris, Rome or Frankfurt am Main. In 2010, 1.4 million passengers were served by the Poznań airport.

█ City of business

The value of the GDP generated in Poznań is twice as big as the Polish average; only the GDP generated in the Capital City of Warsaw is more significant. The dominant sector is definitely the sector of services, which gives jobs to nearly three fourths of all the employ-ees. The city’s economy is very diverse – both structurally and industry-wise. Many large in-dustrial plants, such as the H.Cegielski Poznań factory, one of the leaders in the production of machinery and equipment for the ship-building industry, have undergone success-ful restructuring. Poznań may also be proud of its unusually dynamic sector of small and

medium enterprises. Over the last twenty years the priority of the city’s authorities has been the creation of the best conditions for investments – predominantly in high value-added industries and in the knowledge-based economy. Thanks to this approach Poznań is now the seat of such important concerns as Beiersdorf, Bridgestone, Glaxo-SmithKline, Grupa Dalkia, Exide, Kronospan Holding, Mars, Neinver, SABMiller, Unilever, Volkswagen and Van der Heyden Group. Apart from that, Poznań is growing to be the centre of highly-specialised services, especially in advertis-ing, banking, consulting, insurance and real estate management. There are centres of IT services, financial and accounting services, customer care and R&D of such we – known companies as Arvato-Bertelsmann, Carlsberg, Ciber, Dalkia, Duni, Franklin Templeton, Glaxo-SmithKline, Grace, Kleffmann, MAN, Mentor Graphics, Microsoft, Open Text, Telcordia, TP SA, Unilever and Wikia. Moreover, there are already new investors resolved to open their centres in Poznań.

█ Music, theatre and dance

Poznań is famous for music played by its musical theatres, philharmonic, orchestras and choirs. His pride are two boys’ choirs –

Poznań Nightingales and Polish Nightingales, as well as recurring festivals and music com-petitions, such as the international Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition or the Inter-national Festival of University Choirs “Univer-sitas Cantat”. Poznań is also known for being the organiser of acknowledged international festivals of alternative theatres – “maltaf-estival” and “Maski”. The lovers of modern dance, not only from Poland, are well ac-quainted with the slogan “Dancing Poznań”, which promotes the international workshops and biennale of modern dance held in the city. The series of concerts called “Poznań for the Earth”, which promote ecology and environment protection, involved the perfor-mance of such world stars as Nelly Furtado, Radiohead and Sting. The concert of the lat-ter was part of the artist’s  latest symphonic tour and added splendour to the opening of the modern city stadium which is to host Euro 2012 matches.

█ City of sport and recreation

There are not many cities that have four lakes at the disposal of their inhabitants – each with well prepared leisure infrastruc-ture. On Malta Lake you can find one of the most modern in Europe regatta courses and right next to the lake there is a  year-round ski slope and a toboggan run. These are nat-urally not all the sports attractions. Poznań has 10 stadiums, 16 swimming pools, a  hip-podrome, a speedway and a car race course, three archery fields, a golf course, three ar-tificial ice rings and a modern entertainment and sports hall.

█ Special city

Poznań is teeming with life all year round thanks to various fairs, conferences and the abundance of cultural events. The city hosts over 1.2  million visitors a  year. It is a  place which can make the worlds of business and culture meet and where you can combine doing business with pleasure. ←

VST PERMANENT FORMWORK SYSTEM

The patented VST-System is a composite permanent formwork system. The shaping formwork is made of ce-ment bonded particle boards (cbpb) with a thickness of 24mm. In the production plant the basic materials are built together in an industrial way.

The VST-System is based upon the principle of perma-nent formwork – so the formwork remains in the object.

The following elements can be provided:• Walls (vertical or angled as clam-shell slab)• slabs (horizontal or angled)• columns, beams, stairs • special construction elements (e.g. capitals)

The wall- and slab elements present the composite shell, which will be assembled accurately on construction site. The defi nitive stability will be reached after concreting with fl owing concrete or self compacting concrete (scc). Hence it is an in-situ concrete solid construction.

ADVANTAGES COMPARED WITH CONVENTIONAL CON-STRUCTION METHODS:

• The VST-System provides uncommonly short construc-tion times. The effi cient and simple assembling of the elements allows construction times up to 50% less than with conventional construction methods.

• Stripping of the scaff olds on site and plasterwork (with needed following drying time) can be omitted

• Assembly on site is easy to process• High quality product based upon off -site manufactu-

ring and high accuracy to measurement• The VST-System contains many elements of industrial

production methods. A large part of the activities on a site will be moved into the production plant, where all activities are independent of weather conditions. So ~60% of the wage costs are independent of weather conditions, journeys home, overnight stays and of co-urse bigger risks of accidents at work

• The VST-System method reduces the number of site installations and overhead costs on site

• Parts of M&E can be fi tted already in factory• VST permanent formwork system is a “Component su-

itable for Passive Houses” (accredited by Passive House Institute PHI, Darmstadt, Germany)

VST PERMANENT FORMWORK SYSTEM IS A COMPONENT SUITABLE FOR PASSIVE HOUSE

The main focus of the VST Group is the delivery of raw superstructures of apartment- and hotel projects as well as social welfare facilities.  More than 700 projects all over Europe are built with the VST permanent formwork system.

A passive house is a building, in which to reach a comfortable temperature in both winter and summertime without separate heating and air conditioning system.

Compared to a conventional building, passive houses require 90% less energy for heating.

For the VST composite formwork system, as part of an R & D project, a technical data-base and catalogue with proven and tested design details to achieve passive house standard was published.

By means of the application of the sustainable VST-system, a signifi cant contribution to reducing CO2 emissions can be provided.

Future standards and regulations are strongly heading for this achievement (reduction of the ecological footprint).

The VST system is a “Component suitable for Passive House” certifi ed by the Passive House Institute in Darmstadt, Germany (Dr. Wolfgang Feist)
