(1964)October Stills (b. Steve Arthur Stills, January 3, 1945, Dallas, Texas, US) encounters Furay (b. Paul Richard Furay, May 9, 1944, Dayton, Ohio, US) in New York, while playing in vocal group The New Choctawquins. Together they form a nine member vocal outfit The Au Go Go Singers which stars in an off Broadway production, tours down to Texas and releases an album They Call Us The Au Go Go Singers for Roulette Records in early 1965.

(1965)April The group splinters and Stills and Furay part company. Furay moves to Massachusetts, while Stills and the remaining members of the group, now called The Company, embark on a short tour of Canada. (18) At the Fourth Dimension club in Fort William (Thunder Bay), Stills meets Young (b. Neil Percival Kenneth Ragland Young, November 12, 1945, Toronto, Ontario, Canada), who is currently playing in his own band Neil Young & The Squires. They immediately strike up a rapport and make loose arrangements to form a band; however when Stills returns to New York the plans are shelved as he is unable to track Young down. Furay isn’t interested in forming a band either at this point, so Stills decides to move out to California in August after hearing The Byrds’ Mr Tambourine Man on the radio.July Neil Young and current Squires members Ken Koblun, Terry Erickson and Bob Clark decide to move to Toronto; on arrival they are picked up by manager Martin Onrot, who renames them Four To Go. Onrot arranges an audition with a local record label, but the group destabilises when Erickson travels to Liverpool, England and Clark return to Winnipeg.November Disbanding the group, Young and Koblun decide to look up Stills in New York; arriving at the address given by Stills they find only Furay. Young teaches him one of his songs, Nowadays Clancy Can’t Even Sing, which Furay performs at the Bitter End, and Young records a number of demos at New York’s Elektra Studios.December Returning to Toronto, Young and Koblun part company amicably. Koblun quickly becomes an itinerant bass player on Toronto’s flourishing folk scene, while Young encounters Palmer (b. September 9, 1946, Toronto, Ontario, Canada) while walking down the street. Palmer had left top Toronto band Jack London & The Sparrows in February to join R&B band The Mynah Birds with black singer Ricky James Matthews (later famous as Rick James). Young joins a line up that also includes drummer Rick Mason and guitarist John Taylor.

(1966)January Stills sells one of his early compositions, Sit Down I Think I Love You, to Chuck Kaye at Screen Gems and the song is given to The Mojo Men, who enjoy a top thirty hit with it. Stills also forms a short-lived outfit called Buffalo Fish with bassist Ron Long and guitarist Peter Tork, whom Stills met in New York. Soon afterwards, Stills auditions for a new television programme, whose premise is a sanitised version

of A Hard Day’s Night. The programme’s organiser NBC Television is looking for musicians to become America’s version of The Beatles. Stills fails the audition but convinces his colleague Peter Tork to attend and he becomes one of the four Monkees.February Stills receives a letter from Furay, via his father in El Salvador, enquiring about work in Los Angeles. Stills phones Furay to tell him that he has a new group and that he needs him as its lead singer. However, when Furay arrives in L.A. he discovers that only he and Stills constitute the band. Over the next few weeks they try to recruit members for their new group but no one is suitable.(12-13) The Mynah Birds perform at the El Patio, Toronto. Having signed a seven-year contract with Motown earlier in the month, they are given a $25,000 advance and travel to Detroit, where sessions are held later that month. Matthews, however, is soon arrested for being AWOL from the US Navy and the group splinters; the contract with Motown is terminated and Young and Palmer decide to sell the group’s equipment to finance a trip to Los Angeles in search of Stills.March (21) Stills and Furay try unsuccessfully to contact Young in Toronto. They do manage however, to reach ex-Squires bassist Ken Koblun, who is currently playing in Toronto folk/rock band 3’s a Crowd and convince him to fly out to Los Angeles. Koblun remains for a week before returning home; he has only $20 left in his pocket and the manager of 3’s a Crowd has promised a plane ticket back to Toronto. (29) Back in Toronto, Koblun rejoins 3’s a Crowd at the Riverboat.April (6) After setting off from Toronto in mid-March in a 1953 Pontiac hearse, Young and Palmer arrive in Los Angeles. Unable to find Stills, they decide to head up to San Francisco but are caught in a traffic jam on Sunset Boulevard. Coincidentally, Stills and Furay are also held up in the same traffic jam and when the latter turns to brush a fly off his shoulder, he spots a hearse with Ontario licence plates going in the opposite direction. Furay manages to engineer an illegal u-turn and pulls up behind the hearse. After attracting Young and Palmer’s attention, the four musicians pull into Ben Frank’s supermarket parking lot where they are united. Stills quickly invites Young and Palmer back to his manager Barry Friedman’s house. Friedman finds the band a place on Fountain Street for living and rehearsing and with Stills’ friend Billy Mundi (currently a member of folk-rock band Mastin & Brewer) on drums the group, provisionally named The Herd, begins to build up their repertoire. (9) Mundi leaves early in the rehearsals to return to Mastin & Brewer, and his place is taken by Dewey Martin (b. Walter Milton Dewayne Midkiff, September 30, 1940, Chesterville, near Ottawa, Canada). Martin is a couple of years older than the others and much more experienced: In the early ‘60s, he played Nashville sessions for Patsy Cline, Roy Orbison and Carl Perkins (as well as supporting them at the Grand Ole Opry), before recording a number of singles for A&M and Tower during 1965 under the name Sir Walter Raleigh & The Coupons. In early 1966 he briefly plays with The MFQ (Modern Folk Quartet) and The Dillards (with whom he records a demo single for Capitol Records). When the Dillards decided to return to the drumless pastures of bluegrass, he auditions for The Herd, which by now has been renamed The Buffalo Springfield after a steamroller parked outside the band’s residence.(11) The group makes its live debut at the Troubadour in West Hollywood.(15) The Buffalo Springfield joins The Elysium Senate (Mastin & Brewer) and The Dillards for a performance at the National Orange Show Grounds at the Swing Auditorium, San Bernardino supporting The Byrds. During this period the Springfield briefly takes up residence at the Hollywood Centre Hotel.(22) The band plays at the Los Angeles Harbor College in Willmington with The Byrds and The Dillards.

(23) The Buffalo Springfield appear at Colt Gym, Covina High School, Covina, California with The Byrds and The Dillards.May Chris Hillman of The Byrds drops by to hear the band and is greatly impressed with Stills and Young’s lead guitar work. He persuades Elmer Valentine, owner of the Whisky-A-Go-Go in West Hollywood, to sign the band for live work and the Springfield becomes house-band there for six weeks.(7) The Buffalo Springfield appears at the Hillside Theater, Occidental College, Eagle Rock, California with The Byrds. Later that day, they join The Byrds and Mastin & Brewer for a performance at the Adolfo Camarillo High School Gym in Camarillo, California.(11-22) The group supports Johnny Rivers at the Whisky-A-Go-Go. Their repertoire includes Stills’ Neighbour Don’t You Worry, Young’s Nowadays Clancy Can’t Even Sing and Hello I’ve Returned, a song written by Stills with Van Dyke Parks earlier in the year and never released by the band.June Rapidly establishing themselves as a live act, the Springfield are offered deals by various labels, including Dunhill and Warner Brothers. The group’s friend Dickie Davis is unsure of what to do and approaches Charlie Greene and Brian Stone (managers of Sonny & Cher; and the former a producer for Atlantic’s subsidiary label Atco) for advice. Greene and Stone introduce band to Atlantic President Ahmet Ertegun, who is immediately attracted to their unique style and signs them to Atco for a $22,000 advance. The group’s manager Barry Friedman is bought out by Greene and Stone, who become managers and producers for the band.July (18) Buffalo Springfield enter Gold Star Studios, Los Angeles to begin work on their debut album.(25) The band appears at the Hollywood Bowl (where it supports The Rolling Stones) alongside The McCoys, The Standells and The Trade Winds; it is billed as the first band to appear at the 20,000-seater venue without a hit record to its credit. Featured in a four-song set are Stills’ Sit Down I Think I Love You and Furay’s My Kind Of Love.(26) Greene and Stone arrange a deal for the band to make six appearances on the Hollywood Palace TV show.(31) Debut single, Neil Young’s Nowadays Clancy Can’t Even Sing (which is sung by Furay), is released and hits US #110. It is eventually banned nationally for containing the word ‘damn’.August The band makes its television debut playing on the Hollywood Palace.September The group records Stills and Young’s Kahuna Sunset, the instrumental theme tune for The Big Kahuna Luau contest, hosted by KHJ radio. (2) The Buffalo Springfield support Chad & Jeremy and Ian Whitcomb at the Melodyland Theatre, Anaheim, California. Palmer is arrested for drug possession and detained before the concert and Mastin & Brewer bassist Jim Fielder fills in. During the concert, Young suffers from an epileptic fit and is carried off halfway through the set.(3) With Palmer re-instated, the band returns to the Melodyland Theatre for a second night. Shortly afterwards, several band members approach ex-Jefferson Airplane drummer Alex ‘Skip’ Spence, to ask him to join the band as Dewey Martin’s replacement. Spence declines the offer and forms Moby Grape instead. October The group records several songs which are never released (apart from on bootleg): Stills’ Neighbour Don’t You Worry, My Angel, So You Got A Lover and Come On (Lover); Furay’s My Kind Of Love and Young’s One More Sign, There Goes My Babe and Down Down Down. (The latter will later become part of Young’s song Country Girl, issued on Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s Deja Vu album).

(7-8) The group supports The Turtles at the Third I, Redondo Beach, California.(14-15) The Buffalo Springfield return to the venue for a series of shows supported by The Knack and The New Generation.(22) The band appears with Love and The Sons Of Adam at the Whisky-A-Go-Go, West Hollywood. Palmer is unable to play and is replaced (again) by Jim Fielder.November (4) Buffalo Springfield appear at the Ark, San Francisco with Big Brother & The Holding Company, Lee Michaels and Moby Grape.(11-13) The group performs a string of dates at the Fillmore Auditorium with Country Joe & The Fish, supporting Brazilian guitarist Bola Sete.(12) Buffalo Springfield manage to fit in two further dates: one at the Avalon Ballroom and another at the Gay ‘90s, San Francisco with Moby Grape.(21-27) The band performs at the Whisky-A-Go-Go alongside The Poor (with future Poco and Eagles member Randy Meisner). During the festivities the group is joined by Peter Tork of The Monkees.December A second single, Young’s Burned, is released and then almost immediately withdrawn.(2-3) Buffalo Springfield headline at the Avalon Ballroom, San Francisco with The Daily Flash and The Congress of Wonders. (The Daily Flash’s lead guitarist Doug Hastings will replace Neil Young briefly the following summer.)(5) After witnessing major disturbances on Sunset Strip in which the police violently repress youth elements in the streets, Stills is inspired to write a song documenting the event. For What It’s Worth (Stop, Hey What’s That Sound) becomes an anthem for a generation and is quickly recorded at Columbia Studios and released to capture the mood of the times. The group also cuts a second version of Young’s Do I Have To Come Right Out And Say It, unhappy with Greene and Stone’s original production.(20) Buffalo Springfield’s eponymous debut album is released but sells poorly, due in part to Greene and Stone’s poor production, which fails to capture the band’s ‘live’ sound. Stills and Young (who have produced a more impressive mono version) are not allowed to salvage the damage.(21-22) The group performs two dates at the Whisky-A-Go-Go supporting The Turtles. (27-28) The band tapes two TV performances for Dick Clark. The first (recorded at the Hullabaloo club on Sunset Strip) is aired on January 9 on the TV show Where The Action Is while the second, for the TV show American Bandstand, is aired on January 21.(30) The group performs one date at the Night Owl Cafe in New York before a 10-day stint at Ondine’s.(31) - January (9) The Buffalo Springfield play a series of gigs at Ondine’s in New York supporting Mitch Ryder and The Detroit Wheels. (On one occasion, Otis Redding joins the band for a rendition of In The Midnight Hour). While there, the band decides to sack Greene and Stone as its managers and producers, following their mishandling of the group’s debut album. Further problems ensue during one of the band’s sets: Stills punches Palmer into Martin’s drum kit after the latter refuses to turn down the volume on his bass amp.

(1967)January (9) During its stay in New York, the group cuts the original version of Young’s Mr Soul. At the same session, the band records a second version of Furay’s My Kind Of Love, Stills’ We’ll See and two versions of Mr Soul with Stills and Furay on lead vocal which all remain unreleased. (Group is joined at the session by Otis Redding, who is interested in recording Mr Soul. However, Young refuses Redding

the opportunity to record it). Later that night (at the group’s hotel), Palmer is arrested for possession of marijuana by the NYPD and sentenced to three months in prison. He is subsequently deported to Canada and manager Dickie Davis is forced to fill in for an appearance on TV show Hollywood Palace. The show (which is aired on April 8) is later used by Neil Young in his 1972 movie Journey Thru’ The Past.(19) Following a gig in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Young’s former colleague from The Squires, Ken Koblun (b. May 7, 1946, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada), leaves 3’s a Crowd and flies to L.A. to help fulfil touring dates.(20-22) Ken Forssi of Love agrees to fill in until Ken Koblun arrives in Los Angeles and joins the band for a series of gigs at Garazzi’s, a club on La Cienga Boulevard, Hollywood.(25) Koblun makes his live debut with the band at the Tempo club in San Francisco. (27-28) The Buffalo Springfield appear at the Hullabaloo in Los Angeles.(28) The group plays at Rolling Hills High School, Rolling Hills, California with The Sir Douglas Quintet and The Wild Ones before embarking on a brief tour of Southern California, Texas and New Mexico with The Seeds and others billed as the Hollywood Cavalcade of Stars. October 4, 1947, Denton, Texas, US). Koblun meanwhile returns to Canada where he later rejoins 3’s a Crowd (who later move to Los Angeles and record an album with Mama Cass for Dunhill Records).(17) The band appears on BS-TV’s The Smothers Brothers’ Show which is aired on February 26. (The show later comprises part of Young’s movie Journey Thru’ The Past in 1972). The group’s roadie Miles Thomas fills in for the performance because Fielder has to serve out his notice with The Mothers of Invention; they have a concert at the Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco on the 18th and 19th to fulfil.(18) Stills’ For What It’s Worth reaches US #7 on the national chart and is the band’s biggest hit. The song’s overnight success forces Atco to reissue their debut album replacing the first track, Stills’ Baby Don’t Scold Me, with the hit single. (The original track listing will later become a collectors item). (20) Stills records a new version of Baby Don’t Scold Me at Atlantic Studios, New York. (22) Fielder makes his public debut with the band at the CAFF Benefit show alongside The Byrds, Peter, Paul & Mary and The Doors at Valley Music Theatre, Tarzana, California. After the show, the well-documented incident between Stills and Young takes place, in which both musicians throw their guitars at each other following a particularly fiery guitar duel. Young subsequently adds further fuel to the fire by vetoing the idea of appearing on the forthcoming Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show in early June. (Young argues that it contradicts the band’s ideas and refuses to take part in the show).(22) The band plays at Freeborn Hall, University of California, Davis with The Moby Grape.(27) The Buffalo Springfield appear at Cubberly High School, Palo Alto, California with Sopwith Camel.(28-30) The group flies to the Fillmore Auditorium for the first of three shows featuring The Steve Miller Blues Band, The Freedom Highway and All Alive.

Three versions of Young’s Down To The Wire are taped; two feature Young on lead vocal, the other Steve Stills. The sessions include contributions from Mac Rebennack (better known as Dr John), Bob West and drummer Jesse Hill. (On the same day Young records two instrumentals: Whiskey Boot Hill, which later appears as part of the aforementioned Country Girl, and Slowly Burning, which later forms the basis of Long Walk Home on Young’s 1987 album Life. (The tracks are not issued at the time but are delivered to Atlantic in 1971 as part of a batch of unissued Springfield material. (1975)May (18) Dewey Martin takes legal action against Steve Stills and Neil Young. He claims that he signed away his interests in The Buffalo Springfield under duress, and is seeking retroactive royalties from Atlantic and his fellow members since 1968.

(1977)Bruce Palmer forms the Toronto band Village, which includes former Kensington Market member Keith McKie and guitarist Stan Endersby, who has played with local groups Just Us, The Tripp, Livingstone’s Journey, Heaven and Earth (with Rick James) and Pete Quaife’s (of The Kinks) Mapleoak. November (12-13) The group makes its debut at the Turning Point, Toronto. The band continues to perform locally, but never records.

(1980)Picc-A-Dilly, a subsidiary of First American Records Inc, issues Dewey Martin solo album One Buffalo Heard, a collection of singles from Sir Walter Raleigh & The Coupons.

(1982)April Palmer schedules a reunion of the Buffalo Springfield but a Canadian Music Awards ceremony in Toronto prevents Young from joining the others. July (13) As an apology Young recruits Bruce Palmer for his Trans tour. The Trans Band debuts at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz, California. Palmer however, is sacked after the performance due to his drinking habit. He is replaced for the following six dates by ex-Moby Grape bass player Bob Mosley.August (31) Palmer is reinstated for the group’s European tour after promising to curb his drinking. The tour commences at the Parc Des Sports, Annecy, France and concludes on October 19 at the Deutschlandhalle in Berlin. After the tour finishes, Palmer returns to Toronto.November Palmer is featured on Young’s new album Trans.

(1983)May Palmer and Endersby form Music with ex-Heavy Wood singer Frank Wilks and drummer Dominic Siorda.June (8) Music debuts at Isabella’s Lower East Side in Toronto. The group’s repertoire consists of Wilks’ compositions, old Buffalo Springfield favourites and many of Neil Young’s best known songs. The group soon changes name to The Springfield Band.

(1985)Palmer, Endersby and Wilks form the tribute band Buffalo Springfield Revisited with local Toronto musicians Bob Fredrickson (guitar), Harlan Spector (keyboards) and

Alan Posser (drums). The group spends the next two years touring the US, appearing at nightclubs, fairs and festivals. Towards the end of the year, Buffalo Springfield’s drummer Dewey Martin replaces Posser.

(1986)February (24) Buffalo Springfield Revisited play at the Vietnam Veterans Benefit at the Forum, Inglewood, Los Angeles. The show features old hits: Mr Soul; A Child’s Claim To Fame; On The Way Home and For What It’s Worth.April (15) Stills joins Buffalo Springfield Revisited at L.A’s Palomino club. July The original line-up of the band reconvenes at Stills’ house to rehearse new songs, including Neil Young’s Road To Plenty - a prototype of Eldorado. August (18) On the syndicated radio service Rockline Neil Young announces that The Buffalo Springfield are having regular meetings to see whether a re-union is possible.

(1987)January (17) New York radio station WNEW claim that the original band have reformed and are currently recording an album. Like the earlier rumours, nothing comes of it. Dewey Martin meanwhile briefly drops out of the tribute band to play with Rick Roberts and Randy Meisner before going into semi-retirement. By this time the line-up is Wilks, Palmer, Endersby, guitarist Bob Fredrickson and keyboardist Harlan Spector. Young auditions Martin and Palmer for his Blue Notes but by late 1988 the group and any future reunions are shelved.

(1991)Martin forms a new line-up of Buffalo Springfield for touring purposes. The group features former Medicine Ball lead guitarist Bill Darnell (who has since gone on to play with The Byrds tribute band among others), guitarist/vocalist Michael Curtis (ex-Crazy Horse) and Englishman Robin Lamble, from Al Stewart’s band.December (31) The Springfield celebrate the new year at the Rio Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

(1992)March (22) The same line-up performs at the Hop in Los Angeles.(March 30-May 5) Martin’s group holds down a residence at the Gold River Hotel in Laughin, Nevada. Furay takes legal action to prevent Martin from using the name and soon afterwards Martin drops out of the business due to ill health. He will spend most of his time designing a drum rim and trying to negotiate his former royalties from Neil Young and Steve Stills. Group members Darnell and Lamble meanwhile form country-rock group Electric Range with former Medicine Ball member Pete Bradstreet.

(1997)May (6) The Buffalo Springfield sans Neil Young are inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio at the 12th Annual Induction Ceremony. However, Young and Stills’ behaviour dampens the occasion. Young’s absence (apparently he feels that VH1’s coverage has cheapened the celebration), causes resentment from the others, while Stills’ intransigence (he refuses to rehearse for the ceremony) and his strong dislike for Dewey Martin (whose royalties he owns), means the band’s induction is a soured event.July Buffalo Springfield’s debut album is released in re-mastered form with both mono and stereo mixes. The group’s second and third albums are also released in re-mastered form.

(2004)October (1) Bruce Palmer dies after a long illness.
