Year 6 Induction Day

Monday 3 July saw a successful primary transition day, when students from our feeder schools spent a day becoming used to the routines and life at Teddington School. It is sometimes quite daunting moving from a smaller primary environment to a larger school and these days give students the opportunity to build confidence and start making new friends in their new environment. Tutors were on hand to introduce themselves and began some team building work to ensure the form group begins to gel together. The bond and friendships made in those first few weeks will grow as their Tutor Groups develops over the years. Students met Mr Golding, our new Head of Year 7, and at the beginning of the day Mr Wilkinson spoke to the whole year group about how pleased he was that they had chosen Teddington School for the next stage in their schooling, and he welcomed them to exciting times in teaching and learning which awaits. The new children were assisted by a team of current Year 8 student ―buddies‖ who escorted them throughout the day. They sampled some typical Year 7 lessons, had the opportunity to try out the school restaurant as well as meeting our PE team with some fun games in the sports hall at lunchtime. The day finished with a variety of practical science experiments in our laboratories – just the thing to end a busy school day. We look forward to welcoming everybody back on our first day of term. Mr Watling

Year 8 STEM Scientist Publication

Congratulations to Year 8 students Faye Blackshaw and Alma Talbot and staff member Dr Hui whose article has been officially accepted for publication in the September issue of the European journal Science in School. Entitled How do birds fly? A hands-on demonstration, the article shows how to use a supermarket chicken to investigate the flight muscles of birds. Dr Hui was impressed by the projects completed by Faye and Alma for the STEM club last year, and this article was the result of discussions they had while on a school STEM trip to the Big Bang Fair, and work they carried out in the school science laboratories this year. A link to the article will be posted in the Teddington School newsletter when it is published in September. This is the second article to be published by Dr Hui and Teddington students. The first article was a demonstration of the heart pumping mechanism, a video of which was created by the TED organisation and has been seen over a million times and changed the teaching of the heart in many schools around the world. You can see a demonstration of the experimental work by following this link however please be aware this shows images of dissection https://flic.kr/p/VdG54C

Dr Hui believes that the internet makes it easier for young scientists today to spot what hasn’t been done before, and so creates great new opportunities for genuine, publishable science to be done in schools. To be a co-author of a scientific paper means that the students are no longer studying to be scientists, but are scientists already; for the rest of their lives they will know that science will not be something they learn to do, but something they actually do. The reviewer for the journal wrote this about the latest article: This article about the anatomy and physiology of bird wings and how they function is a wonderful opportunity to lighten up early science teaching. Young students are keen to explore and come to their own conclusions: a chicken dissection is perfect. The hands-on approach, in contrast to learning from anatomical drawings presented in textbooks, will boost students’ learning and memory. Comparing bird anatomy to our own anatomy may lead to some fun, and also to speculation about why humans cannot fly.

The Big Bang UK Young Scientists & Engineers Fair is the largest celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) for young people in the UK.

The Big Bang Fair is a combination of exciting theatre shows, interactive workshops and exhibits and careers information from STEM professionals. The aim is to show young people the exciting and rewarding opportunities out there for them with the right experience and qualifications, by bringing classroom learning to life. Selected students attended from Teddington School and participated in the Big Bang Fair which is know for its prestigious record in informing children about science and engineering. After a few train journeys into central London, some very excited students stepped into Westminster College. A plethora of activities awaited provided from both students of the college and engineering companies from all over the UK. Activities included everything from drawing with bicycles to eating insects. All the students had the opportunity to use Virtual Reality goggles. Although it was an enjoyable day and gave us the opportunity to socialise with their peers through and educational activity, the most beneficial thing that we learnt was the importance of science and engineering in everyday life. Piers Torday - Author Visit for Year 7

We are delighted to be welcoming award winning author Piers Torday on Monday 10 July to our Year 7 assembly. Piers’ bestselling first series for children, The Last Wild trilogy was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Award, nominated for the Carnegie Medal and won the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize (for The Dark Wild). His latest novel There May Be A Castle, came out in October 2016. Piers will be talking to the students about how he got into writing, beginning with his childhood in Northumberland and how an encounter with Roald Dahl changed his life. Piers’s talks at other schools have been very well received, for their impact on children’s own reading and writing. After the talk, Piers will also be signing books. Copies of The Last Wild trilogy will be available for students to buy for the discounted price of £6.00 (per book, the set for £16) and There May Be a Castle (hardback) at the special price of £10. If you would like your child to receive a signed, personalised copy, please ensure they bring in the correct cash or a cheque.

Port of London Authority Warning: Swimming at Teddington

Lock

Parents should be aware that students from Teddington School are swimming in the River Thames at Teddington Lock. These occurrences have been taking place between approximately 4.00pm—8.00pm on weekday evenings. The number of students involved is growing and it was reported that yesterday evening that approximately 30 were in the river and some were also jumping into the barge lock at Teddington. Unfortunately when challenged by member of the public thee student were rude and aggressive toward them. Whilst this is outside of the Port of London Authority’s (PLA) jurisdiction they will now undertake a proactive patrol on Friday 7 July and Monday 10 July. In addition this will be raised with the Environment Agency which has navigational jurisdiction in this area and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). The tidal River Thames is not a playground and there are numerous risks attached to swimming and jumping in the Thames. Further incidents will be reported directly to the Police. Many thanks for your support and assistance in advance.

Withdrawal of Route 641 Bus route 641 currently runs between West Molesey and Teddington School, Broom Road with one journey towards Teddington School, Broom Road in the morning and one towards West Molesey in the afternoon. The route mainly serves Teddington School. Following a review and to make better use of resources Transport for London propose that from 21 July 2017 route 641 will no longer run. Although there are around 58 trips per day made on the 641, most of these (around 60 per cent) are between Teddington School and Hampton Wick. These trips can either be made by walking around 900 metres or by using high frequency routes 281 and 285 which can be picked up on the Kingston Road and are around 650 metres from the school. There are also a small number or trips made through to West Molesey in the afternoon. These can be made by interchanging at Hampton Wick for route 411. There would be no changes to routes 281, 285 or 411. For further details and to provide your comments please visit the Transport for London website at: tfl.gov.uk/buses/route-641
