Introduction

As many of you know, this title is the second in myBuild the Perfect Bug Out series. My first book, Buildthe Perfect Bug Out Bag, started it all. It is acomprehensive no-nonsense guide to building a 72-hourdisaster survival kit. I have designed each book to becompletely independent, but you’ll get more out of theseries if you read them in order. Each one builds on theknowledge and skill sets discussed previously. I consider

building a Bug Out Bag to be the first step in preparingfor an inevitable large-scale disaster. The widespreadsuccess of that book confirms my gut feeling that astaggering number of people worldwide understand theneed for practical preparedness and are actively seekingsolid, quality information on the subject—minus thezombie hordes, political slants, and doomsday theories.Well, maybe a little bit of the zombie hordes, but none ofthe others.

At the end of the day, real disasters happen to real peopleon a regular basis. Mother Nature is a mercilessadversary and it doesn’t take a genius to realize that sheis in control—always. In the past few years alone we’veseen hurricanes, wildfires, floods, earthquakes, mudslides, and tornadoes devastate homes, cities, and regionsboth in the United States and abroad. Hurricane Sandy, dubbed Frankenstorm, unleashed a fury on the upperEast Coast that many experts believed to be nearlyimpossible. It is a statistical truth that natural disastersare larger, more frequent, and more violent than everbefore in our history.

As if Mother Nature doesn’t cause enough problems, wehumans add in our own plethora of nightmarish events. From nuclear meltdowns to terrorist attacks andpandemic outbreaks, we are our own worst enemies.

Bugging Out: DefinedThe term Bugging Out refers to the decision to abandonyour home due to an unexpected emergency situation, whether a natural disaster or one caused by man. Thethought of having to evacuate your home due to a suddenand imminent threat is not at all unrealistic. The reality isthat sudden and uncontrollable events of nature and mando happen. Natural disasters, such as hurricanes, storms, earthquakes, floods, and volcanic explosions can strikequickly with devastating effects on homes, vehicles, roads, medical facilities, and resource supply chains suchas food, water, fuel, and electricity. Time and time againwe have seen disasters strike the United States andabroad, forcing tens of thousands of people from theirhomes with little warning. Unprepared and with noemergency plan, many of these people are leftcompletely dependent on scavenging and handouts whileliving in makeshift shelters, fending for themselves in atime of complete chaos and disorder. In our unstable andunpredictable world economy, we would be foolish tothink there is also no chance of a terrorist or militaryattack from forces domestic or foreign that couldpossibly force us to evacuate our own homes. An act ofwar is not the only threat from man. Dams burst, powerplants go down, pipelines explode, oil spills occur, and

16

Page 17: Build the Perfect Bug Out Vehicle - preview.kingborn.netpreview.kingborn.net/1210000/f308e374a7a94179a7024cf4e0aa96b… · Build the Perfect Bug Out Vehicle The Disaster Survival

other man-made structures and facilities can fail, resulting in disaster. Epidemics and outbreaks of diseasecould also warrant an evacuation.

We cannot control when, where, or how disasters strike. But we can control how prepared we are to deal with adisaster. There is a fine line between order and chaos, and sometimes that line can be measured in seconds. When every second counts, having a plan and the toolsto see that plan through is crucial to survival. A Bug OutVehicle (BOV) specifically chosen and outfitted withsurvival evacuation in mind may very well be your keyto making it out alive.

Bug Out Vehicle (BOV): DefinedEveryone has his or her own perception of the role for aBOV in a Bug Out scenario. It’s a fairly subjective topic. For reasons I’ll thoroughly explain later, I believe mydefinition is one of the more practical ones out there.Simply put, a BOV is a mode of transportationspecifically and thoughtfully chosen based on budget, environment, and personal survival needs to transportyou, your loved ones, and any necessary equipment andsupplies to a predetermined destination (Bug OutLocation) if and when the decision is made to Bug Out.Bug Out Vehicles are prepared in advance of disasterand are ready to leave at a moment’s notice.

Bug Out Vehicle

Choosing and Outfitting the PerfectBOVWhether you live in a high-rise loft in New York City orin the cornfields of Indiana, there is undisputableevidence that a disaster may one day force you toevacuate your home. As I always say, “It’s not if butwhen.” It happens to tens of thousands of people everyyear all over the world. Many do not make it out of thedisaster zone in time and suffer incredible loss, includingdeath. “Not making it” is due to either bad planning orbad luck, and you can’t control luck. Although, I arguethat the study of survival skills helps to “make your ownluck.” The what-ifs in life are someone else’s reality, andyour turn could be next. Just having a Bug Out Bag isnot sufficient. All of the guns, bullets, food storage, survival skills, and seeds in the world will be of no use ifyou can’t escape the disaster to begin with. If your BugOut Plan does not include a BOV of some kind, then it isincomplete and, quite frankly, reckless.

Arguably, the most important aspect of surviving asudden large-scale disaster is the ability to quickly, effectively, and safely get away from it. Only in the

movies do people outrun a disaster on foot. In the realworld, your best option is to “outwit” and “outsmart” adisaster by using every tool at your disposal. The disasterwill always have the upper hand, but you can improvethe odds.

The mode of transportation you choose should representthe best you can do with the resources you’ve beengiven. Do the best you can. Your life (and those of yourfamily) may one day teeter on a BOV’s ability toperform under horrific and unpredictable circumstances.Decisions you make now absolutely affect your optionslater.

Choosing a BOV is not an easy decision and should notbe taken lightly. It is one of your most important survivaltools. Any survival tool that your life depends on shouldbe given thoughtful consideration. Choosing a BOVinvolves many factors. From budget to environment tofamily size, the list of deciding factors can be a littleoverwhelming.

In the following pages I will help you wade through allof these deciding factors. I’ll discuss the “must haves”and “don’t dos” along with the “whys” and “why nots.”I’ll detail important vehicle features and also outlineitems that should be packed in your BOV. I’ll coverBOVs of all types—cars, trucks, bicycles, ATVs, boats,

and even horses. I’ll discuss city BOVs and those bettersuited for less urban environments. (And for all you guysout there, yes, there is a weapons section.) You’ll alsofind BOV Highlight sections that showcase a widevariety of real-life BOVs other people (or companies)have built because it’s always helpful (and fun) to seewhat other people are doing. Long story short, I will helpyou choose and outfit your perfect Bug Out Vehicle.

Let’s get started. Mother Nature doesn’t care about yourbusy schedule.

CHAPTER ONE

BOV Mentality

This short chapter sets the tone for the entire book. You’ll learn my thought process and reasoning behindthe concept of a Bug Out Vehicle. Before we get into thenuts and bolts of choosing and outfitting a BOV, it’simportant to understand a BOV’s role in your life.

23

Page 24: Build the Perfect Bug Out Vehicle - preview.kingborn.netpreview.kingborn.net/1210000/f308e374a7a94179a7024cf4e0aa96b… · Build the Perfect Bug Out Vehicle The Disaster Survival

I had a BOV before I knew what that phrase meant. Foras long as I can remember, I’ve outfitted my vehicleswith survival supplies and tools. From water to blanketsto food and rescue tools, I’ve always prepared for theunexpected. In college, I kept an extra stash of breathmints in my BOV. Survival, no. Preparedness, yes. It’sjust the way I’m wired. With age and experience, my“BOV mentality” matured as well. Today, I have awell-grounded and practical thought process when itcomes to the function of a BOV in my life.

Point A to Point BA BOV’s primary function is to get you, your lovedones, and your supplies from ground zero to your BugOut Location. It is a means to an end, not the end itself. Idon’t view a BOV as a long-term survival location. It isnot a Bug Out Location. Some people view a BOV as themeans of escape and also the final destination—a mobileBug Out Location if you will. Are they right? Yes. Am Iright? Yes. How? It’s okay to have different opinionsabout a BOV. This book is my opinion. We can all learnfrom each other. My BOV’s single purpose is to get meand my stuff from point A to point B.

24

Page 25: Build the Perfect Bug Out Vehicle - preview.kingborn.netpreview.kingborn.net/1210000/f308e374a7a94179a7024cf4e0aa96b… · Build the Perfect Bug Out Vehicle The Disaster Survival

BOVs should get you from point A to point B.

No Emotional AttachmentI love my BOV, but I love myself more. At the core ofunderstanding what it means to Bug Out is the cold, harsh reality that you may have to leave “stuff” behind. You can’t take everything. It just doesn’t work that way.The first rule in raising farm animals for food is not togive them names. Don’t name your BOV either. It’s nota he or a she. It’s an it. It doesn’t feel pain or any kind ofemotions. It doesn’t get lonely, and it has no idea youeven exist.

Disasters create some of the most chaotic, violent, andhorrific circumstances on Earth. It’s not hard to imagine

25

Page 26: Build the Perfect Bug Out Vehicle - preview.kingborn.netpreview.kingborn.net/1210000/f308e374a7a94179a7024cf4e0aa96b… · Build the Perfect Bug Out Vehicle The Disaster Survival

that your BOV can only take you so far. For whateverreason, your vehicle might not be able to make the entirejourney to your Bug Out Location. There are hundreds ofreasons why, here are just a few:

• not enough fuel• traffic jams• impassible terrain• vehicle malfunction or break-down• destroyed roads

You may very well have to leave your BOV behind andwalk. This is exactly why I am not a proponent ofinvesting your entire life savings in a BOV. It should bea vehicle that you can afford, but one that you can alsoafford to lose. The sooner you come to grips with thefact that you may have to abandon a BOV andeverything you can’t carry, the better. We will discusssome options, such as Bug Out Carts, for carrying extragear on foot later in the book.

26

Don’t get too attached to your BOV; you may need toabandon it.

To Each Their OwnYou and I don’t have the same Bug Out needs. No onedoes. Married, single, no kids, Brady bunch, disabilities, pets, city, urban, rural, coastal, inland, mountains, plains, warm, cold—there is a never-ending list of variables thatforces us to make very unique BOV decisions. It is not ablack-and-white decision. There are many more thanfifty shades of gray. People love to voice strong opinionsabout BOVs. Your choice in a BOV only has to work for

27

Page 28: Build the Perfect Bug Out Vehicle - preview.kingborn.netpreview.kingborn.net/1210000/f308e374a7a94179a7024cf4e0aa96b… · Build the Perfect Bug Out Vehicle The Disaster Survival

you, not the know-it-all on the survival forums or thebelligerent commenter on YouTube.

Ready or Not, Here I ComeBugging Out is like playing hide-and-seek with adisaster except you can’t hear the disaster counting downits approach. Disasters can strike at any moment withlittle to no warning. Even with all of our moderntechnological indicators and gadgets, forewarning is aluxury and not a guarantee. Your BOV should be locked, loaded, and ready to rock at a moment’s notice. It shouldneed only two things: people and Bug Out Bags. Youshould not have to stop for anything in between groundzero and your Bug Out Location. Everything you need tomake the Bug Out Journey is pre-packed into (or veryclose to) the BOV. No exceptions.

And the Award for the CoolestBOV Goes to…Fight the urge to prioritize form before function. It’seasy to let the idea of a cool-looking BOV cloud yourbest judgment. A disaster will not judge how your BOV

28

Page 29: Build the Perfect Bug Out Vehicle - preview.kingborn.netpreview.kingborn.net/1210000/f308e374a7a94179a7024cf4e0aa96b… · Build the Perfect Bug Out Vehicle The Disaster Survival

looks, but it will judge how well it performs underpressure. Leave your ego at the door and focus onpractical application. A common mistake I see peoplemake is blowing their budget on bells and whistles thathave no survival value, and then they don’t have moneyfor the important necessities. What would be more usefulin a disaster Bug Out—flashy chrome rims or a9,000-pound (4,000 kg) winch? If you end up with apractical BOV for your lifestyle that also looks cool, consider it a bonus.

Lifestyle DrivenAt the end of the day, BOV selection is driven bylifestyle. The lifestyle decisions you’ve made or plan tomake will dictate what type of BOV you should choose.Let’s discuss some of these factors in the next chapter.
