Building a Network

• The concept of a Network first defined as; "a group of people who engage in collective learning in a common

area of interest" (Wenger: 1998) • In general they consist of a group of people with a common sense

of purpose who agree: • to work together, • to share information, • build knowledge, • develop expertise and solve problems, • act as learning partners,

Networks

• Research indicates that Networks have three important dimensions:

1. Purpose - the Network's aims as understood by its members. 2. Function - members are engaged in related activities or

projects. 3. Output - published and unpublished resources, events and

discussions developed and sourced by Network members.

• Networks are cultivated and nurtured rather than formally managed. In this sense they differ from formal teams
