Pag e 1 of 3 Pr ophetic Brie f Building a Powerful Church to Thrive During a Time of Crisis - P art 9 Migration and Change I was sitting in 27C, way back in the plane, when I heard the first announ cement from the captain: the law governing the airspace around Washington, DC had changed and we would not be allowed to leave our seats once we were within 30 minutes of the airport. It was a few months after 9/11 and I was flying into Reagan National/ DCA. To protect against future hijacks, the FAA declared that all passengers were required to remain in their seats; we couldn’t get up to stow our bags or even use the lavatory. As soon as we were airborne out of Atlanta the captain made the announcement again, indicating that when we reached the zone he would make a 3rd announcement after which no one was to move about the cabin. The fligh t is only about 1 ½ hours, and at the designated time the ban on movement was given from the cockpit. Sure enough, less than 5 minutes later, someone got up to use the lavatory – I couldn’t believe it! It was an elderly woman and I felt sorry for her – two flight attendants rushed to her and forcefully moved her back to her seat, scolding and rebuking her. She wasn’t very steady on her feet to begin with and in the jostling she nearly fell. The poor lady had a bewildered look on her face; it was obvious she hadn’t paid attention to the multiple announcements and she couldn’t figure out why she was being assaulted when all she wanted to do was go to the lav. A new law had been passed, and it was in force whether people heard it or paid attention or not. We Are Required to Know the Season God moves in different times and seasons in the earth, and we are required to know what His requirements are for this time. Jeremiah 8:7 Even the stork in the sky knows her appointed seasons, and the do e, the swi and the thrush observe the time of their migratio n. Bu t my people do n ot know the requirements of the LORD. The words “bird brain” come to my mind when I read this, and no matter how we slice it the comparison is not very favorable for the people of God: wild fowl h ave more knowledge and obedience than covenant people. Jeremiah was a prophet who declared that the understanding of God’s people was inferior to simple birds, who know when to migrate in their appointed seasons. The word “requirement” is the Hebrew word shapat , and it means a process, procedure, litigation before judges. Shapat can be used of a process whereby order and law are maintained within a group. There is an orderly way to live in each season, a process for life. God moves in seasons and times and we have to be aware of the new order that He has established so we can migrate. The word “seasons” is mowed , a noun that connotes time conceived as an opportunity or se ason. It is e quivalent to the Greek word kairos, but is often translated “congregation” in the OT, indicating it meant a people gathered together for a specific season, such as a holy or feast day, a specific time for which they gathered.
