The History
● Need to connect students to employment after graduation
● New legislation requiring apprenticeships and/or credentials for 45% of graduating students
● Transition from informal employer connections to a partnership based on systems and structures
● Started with construction industry due to high demand internally and in the community

● Challenge: Finding maintenance staff and providing employment for students after graduation
● Solution: PGCPS CTE Registered Apprenticeship Program
● Programs: Carpentry, Masonry, Electrical, Plumbing, and HVAC
● Successes: 40-hour+ per week summer employment at $15/hour, student readiness, supervisor
● Obstacles: Transportation, class schedules for fall employment

● Challenge: Trainee Line Mechanic and other vacancies
● Solution: Connect with CTE’s Electrical Programs and other interested
students
● Successes: Completed visits to multiple CTE classrooms to share
opportunities; high student interest
● Obstacles: PEPCO’s long hiring process (6+ months); lack of student
follow-through

● Solution: Implementation of the Multi-Craft Core Curriculum (MC3) Pilot;
Entrance exam test prep, testing day, and interview day for PGCPS current
Construction Trades Programs participants
● Successes: Piloting MC3 at High Point High School
● Obstacles: MC3 is not a complete CTE Pathway for credentialing

● Solution: Developed “Grad Caps to Hard Hats Hiring Event”● Employer Engagement:
○ Field trips to commercial building sites to increase student understanding of different trades
○ Resume review and critique
○ Interview skills bootcamp and mock interviews with immediate feedback
○ Interview Day with multiple employers (12+)
● Obstacles: Student follow-through; selecting the right employment option
