Why does this talk concern you?

It isn’t what you know. It is what people perceive what you know.

Outstanding presentation skills create an uncluttered pathway for people to understand your outstanding ideas.

A cluttered pathway means your ideas have to work that much harder to break through to others.

Embrace the thing that hurts you!Your fear of giving a presentation is the reason you should embrace your role as a presenter.

This is empowering for other facets of your life.

Repeat After Me…“What one person can do so can another.”

People give powerful presentations all the time.

Their secret often is nothing more than developing presentation skills through practice.

The Law of Expectations

“What if I have had horrible experiences in the past?”

We do not get what we want as much as we get what we expect!

Vincent Suppa, 2013, Presentation Skills: How to calm Jitters & Deliver a Powerful Presentation ©

Outcome of future events more determined from expectations than by past outcomes.

Write it Down

Each evening for 7 days prior to your presentation write down (using present tense) how outstanding your presentation was as though you already presented.

“I gave an outstanding presentation!”

Write it down…Read it silently…Read it aloud Vincent Suppa, 2013, Presentation Skills: How to calm Jitters & Deliver a Powerful Presentation ©

Train your Mind

During the week your mind will passively develop positive thoughts that will cause the right behaviors for you to give an outstanding presentation.

Follow the same three steps when you wake up.

Muscle memory synonymous with motor learning which is a form of procedural memory that involves consolidating a specific motor task into memory through repetition.

If you conscience mind is a post it note, your subconscious brain is a super computer.

Write it down…Read it silently…Read it aloud

Tactical Preparation

o Arrive early to get a feel for the room.o Walk around its perimeter and up/down the aisles.o Sit in an empty chair to judge distance between you & the podium.o Take mental ownership of the room.

Page 14: Building Effective Presentation

Know your audienceIntroduce yourself to early guests as they arrive.

Speak to them Find out their backstory Remember their names

These people are friendly faces to make eye contact with during your presentation & to call them out by name.

Page 15: Building Effective Presentation

The Perfect Tonic for Jitters

A smiling, encouraging person in the audience is the best tonic to calm jitters.

Page 16: Building Effective Presentation

Perfection vs. AuthenticityGive yourself permission not to be perfect.

Be authentic instead since that is what makes an outstanding presentation!

Authenticity is already within you & is how you connect with your audience.

Page 17: Building Effective Presentation

Four Things to DoConsciously breathe. Proper breathing control regulates our composure.

Never get in profile as this disengages sections of your audience. Your parameters are 45 degree angles from the back left and right corner of the room.

If appropriate, get off the podium & work the room to make presentation more authentic. If audiences wanted information without human connections could ask for it in writing.

If you are using a projector, never look at the screen and give your audience your back! Have the computer positioned in front of you.

Multiple Effect of Eye Contact Mentally divide the room into sections.

Preselect people from each section & make eye contact.

When making eye contact people around that person will think you are making eye contact with them too.

Page 19: Building Effective Presentation

What if I make a mistake?

Most likely, your audience will not even notice. Focus back on those friendly faces & get out of your own head & just continue.

Vincent Suppa, 2013, Presentation Skills: How to calm Jitters & Deliver a Powerful Presentation ©

Again … give yourself permission not to be perfect.

Page 20: Building Effective Presentation

Giving a Powerful PresentationJust being asked to present already crowns you with legitimate role as an authority on the subject.

Embrace the title because …

Your audience actually wants you to succeed!

They showed up, right?

Vincent Suppa, 2013, Presentation Skills: How to calm Jitters & Deliver a Powerful Presentation ©

Page 21: Building Effective Presentation

Humanity connects through Stories Humanity connects by the stories we tell each other! Facts & figures support our presentation but ever since we lived in caves, we

related to others by the stories we told while gathering around the fire. Be vulnerable! Give personal, even revealing examples, on how you approached

or were affected by the subject matter.

Page 22: Building Effective Presentation

A Contrarian Approach

Experts advise to practice & practice your presentation to achieve perfection. If this feels right, hey, who am I to tell you what to do? I do invite you to consider a different approach, though.

Over practice squelches serendipity. It keeps you in your own head. It takes endless hours of time! (Time scarcest resource) It negates adjusting your style & approach on a last minute reading of your audience.

Vincent Suppa, 2013, Presentation Skills: How to calm Jitters & Deliver a Powerful Presentation ©

Page 23: Building Effective Presentation

A Contrarian Approach Rehearse, but speaking extemporaneously fosters a conversation with your audience instead of them listening to a speech.

The former is a dialogue & the latter is a static monologue.

Which one do you think is more authentic and engaging?

Vincent Suppa, 2013, Presentation Skills: How to calm Jitters & Deliver a Powerful Presentation ©

Page 24: Building Effective Presentation

Authenticity is the Key, Not PerfectionAll advice should be taken as a balanced approach so rehearsing is important.

Practicing until perfection decreases chance of authentic audience connections.

Years from now, your audience may not remember what you said but they will remember how you made them feel.

Better to speak naturally than memorize your entire talk!

Page 25: Building Effective Presentation

How to Powerfully Close

Book end your talk. When opening:1. Tell the audience what they will hear2. Let them here it3. Close by recapping what they heard but with a twist!

Refer back to the story I asked you to tell but did not fully complete.

At your close, pick up the same story & offer the punch line around your theme.

Vincent Suppa, 2013, Presentation Skills: How to calm Jitters & Deliver a Powerful Presentation ©

Page 26: Building Effective Presentation

How to Powerfully CloseIf you are using a slide deck, your last slide should contain your email address & social media contact info, inviting feedback from your audience.

Use this feedback to tweak your future presentation.

Vincent Suppa, 2013, Presentation Skills: How to calm Jitters & Deliver a Powerful Presentation ©

Page 27: Building Effective Presentation

Don’t let perfection be the enemy of good! You don’t have to give a great presentation to greatly impact your audience.

Remembering this decreases the pressure on yourself which empowers you to present even better.
