09:00 Registration and Welcome Coffee

09:30 Opening Remarks from Conference Chair

Digby Hall, Mechanical & Sustainability Engineer (RPEQ), Umow Lai 09:40 State of the Art Innovation: the UTS Business School and its Two Distinctive Façades Having been referred to as a “cluster of tree houses”, a “crumpled paper bag” and an “urban sandcastle”, the Dr Chau Chak Wing Building unique masonry façade— contorting and twisting in a three-dimensional plane for the full height of the 14-storey structure—created structural engineering challenges requiring innovative solutions.

In collaboration with UTS and the brick supplier, AECOM developed a unique brick, tie, mortar and backing system that solved the load, constructability and complex geometrical issues, allowing a near impossible feat of engineering to be realised. During this session, Stephen Giblet of AECOM will discuss: § Developing a world first: The state of the art “tie mortar and backing system” § Overcoming the considerable technical challenges of the project § Iterative computer modelling and shaping utilising advanced software techniques § Balancing functionality, aesthetics, performance and cost § Energy efficiency and building code considerations § Lessons learned during the project

Stephen Giblet, Building structures leader NSW/ACT, AECOM

10:20 One Central Park, Sydney: A Green Icon Every year, a jury panel of industry experts acknowledge new projects that have contributed majorly to the advancement of tall buildings and the urban environment. One Central Park was announced as the overall winner of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat’s Best Tall Building Worldwide 2014. During this session, Mark Giles of PTW Architects will reveal the secrets to designing the most highly acclaimed tall building in the world. § Overview of the integrated design systems from the precinct wide context to the specific building resolution § Development of the exterior and interior relationship § Conceiving a revolutionary symbiotic planting system

§ How we balanced vision, aspiration, function, performance and cost § The finished building – green star, maintenance systems, longevity

Mark Giles, Senior Associate, PTW Architects

11:00 Speed Networking A guided and effective structured interactive session designed to help you expend your network through one-on-one focused conversations.

11:30 Morning Tea and Networking Break

11:50 Façades Under Construction: Darling Harbour Live City Representative in Sydney for the International Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, Ken McBryde has particular strengths in commercial high-rise and residential projects. During this session, the challenges and lessons learnt in delivering a diverse range of innovative façades to a tight frame and strict budget will be discussed. Three distinctly different and innovative façade types will also be discussed: § The crystalline curtain wall of the International Convention Centre § The dignified large format ceramic cladding of the ICC Theatre and Ballroom ceiling § The folding ceramic ceiling of the Grand Ballroom pre- function spaces § The edgy urban layered metal cladding of the Darling Harbour Theatre

Ken McBryde, Principal, Hassell

12:30 Air Tightness Criteria, Testing and Tight Building Technologies Air tightness testing is a means to quantify the extent to which buildings ‘leak’ air through their envelopes (for example, perimeter walls, roof and floor slab). Air leakage (also referred to as air infiltration) is a vehicle for energy wastage, resulting from the increased loads placed on the space heating and/or cooling systems by the constant uncontrolled flow of air through the building fabric. During this session, Chris Nunn of JLL will discuss: § Air tightness criteria: Air changes per hour (ACH) v pressure criteria (m3/m2/hour@50Pa) § Assumptions used in energy modelling v actual as-built building performance § The importance of including air tightness criteria in the project brief § Testing technologies: Blower door testing/Thermographic imaging § Assessing innovative tight building technologies § Learnings from the UK experience

Chris Nunn, Sustainability Director, JLL

13:10 Lunch and Networking Break

14:10 Cost and Performance Benefits: Energy Efficiency and Performance Modelling Improving energy efficiency and performance modelling can breathe new life into buildings, increasing the market value, and decreasing operational costs. By improving the performance of existing buildings, it is possible to compete against other landlords and the new green building stock.

WORKSHOPS29 June 2015 - 1 July 2015

Workshop B: Tuesday 30 June 2015 07:00 – 09:00

Living Building ChallengeWhat if every single act of design and construction made the world a better place? What if every intervention resulted in greater biodiversity, increased soil health, as well as a deeper understanding of climate, culture and place? What if buildings used nature as their performance benchmark? These are the questions our facilitator, Mary Casey, (Chair of the Australian Chapter of the International Living Future Institute) will ask you to consider when taking part in “The Living Building Challenge.” The challenge calls for the creation of building projects at all scales (from single-room renovations to whole neighborhoods) that operate as cleanly, beautifully and efficiently as nature’s architecture. To achieve certification, a project must meet 20 rigorous imperatives (including net zero energy, waste and water) over a minimum of 12 months of continuous occupancy. It’s a tall order. 192 projects worldwide are taking up this challenge, including nine in Australia, and the rate of uptake has been steady and strong since the challenge was first issued in 2008.

Are you up to the challenge?

Learning Objectives: § How to approach a project with the question: ‘What does “good” look like (as opposed to “less bad”?’§ How to unlock creativity and develop team purpose to deliver the above§ How to apply these ideas to design using a systems approach, with the LBC framework as a guide

Facilitated by: Mary Casey, Chair, Living Building Institute Australia

Pre Conference Workshop A: Monday 29 June 2015 07:00 – 09:00

Collaborative Session: Best Practice Development and Integration of High Performance EnvelopesStakeholders involved in the conception, design and documentation of façades and building envelopes strive to design and engineer high performance façades that are durable, sustainable, aesthetical pleasing and of course high economical and environmental performance. As the specifications for high performance façades are driven by user needs, architects, façade consultants, quantity surveyors and M&E engineers and of course our clients, it is imperative that the procurement strategies should be carefully planned and implementation controlled efficiently. Through leadership from your facilitator and the expert panel this workshop will provide insights and outline key stages in determining the most appropriate performance of the façade, and then how to explore the necessary materials and components, as well as develop appropriate design methodology and maintain design quality during implementation.

Learning Objectives:§ Coordinating with M&E engineers, architects and façade consultants and cost planners to determine façade performance§ Developing documentation and procurement strategies to best position for a good outcome§ Methods and approaches to protect the value of investment in the façade elements

Facilitated by: Ken McBryde, Principal, Hassell

WORKSHOPS29 June 2015 - 1 July 2015

Post Conference Workshop D: Wednesday 1 July 2015 07:00 – 09:00

Retrofitting Façades to Existing buildingsRetrofitting an existing building can often be more cost-effective than building a new facility. Since buildings consume a significant amount of energy, particularly for heating and cooling, and because existing buildings comprise the largest segment of the built environment, it is important to initiate energy conservation retrofits to reduce energy consumption and the cost of heating, cooling, and lighting buildings. But conserving energy is not the only reason for retrofitting existing buildings. The goal should be to create a high-performance building by applying the integrated, whole-building design process, to the project during the planning phase that ensures all key design objectives are met. By attending this interactive workshop, participants will identify the solutions to the following questions:

§ Is the performance of your existing façade effecting the Nabers rating of your building? § Is your façade starting to deteriorate and fail? § Do you want to improve energy performance of your building, improve occupant comfort, and improve the image of your building?

Learning Objectives:§ Discover different techniques which can be used to retrofit existing façades§ Identify the best strategy for your project: Replacing complete façades vs augmenting existing façades§ Understand which complementary building services and workplace layout strategies should be considered alongside a façades retrofit Facilitated by:Jeffrey Robinson, Sustainable Buildings Leader, Buildings, Aurecon

Chris Buntine, Senior Sustainability Development Engineer, Aurecon

Workshop C: Tuesday 30 June 2015 17:15 – 20:15

Early Stage Façade Optimisation to Generate Optimal Structural, Aesthetic and Performance OutcomesDuring this workshop, we will investigate a typical office building model with conventional use and contemporary building systems and how it was developed for façade optimisation.

Wall, glazing area and window parameters were taken as the main variables. The objective function of the optimisation task described in this workshop is the minimisation of cooling and heating energy consumption.

The office building façades optimisation was carried out using a combination of IDA Indoor Climate and Energy 4.5 and GenOpt. The process is described in detail so that the approach may be emulated. A hybrid multidimensional optimisation algorithm GPSPSOCCHJ was used in calculation process.

The optimisation results are presented in four quick selection charts to assist architects, designers and real estate developers in making suitable early stage façade selection decisions. Learning Objectives: § How to take an evaluative approach to your façade: from early stage sketches to planning documentation§ How to overcome the complexities that you face to balance sustainability/time and budget concerns§ How to determine a high performance approach that will provide the best value in terms of sustainability, buildability and procurement Facilitated by: Darren O’Dea, Building Physics (ESD) Manager, Inhabit Group

Peter Buffett, Senior Facade Engineer, Inhabit Group
