A MESSAGE FROM OUR LEADERSHIP

Michael Bodenhausen, CEO

Alan Nickelsen, Board Chair

OUR MISSION To put Christian principles into practice

through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

I’ve heard that timing is everything. My timing as YMCA board chair could not have been better, as I assumed the role just as we were preparing to move to the new Bear Levin Studer Family YMCA. That being said, I owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to all of those who served before me. While that milestone has dominated our agenda this past year, propelling us into the next phase of our Y’s history, we have many other successes to celebrate. First I’ll share a few impressive highlights related to our new facility. Over the past year, we raised an additional $337,000 for our capital campaign, increasing the total to $14.5 million, including proceeds from the sale of the former Downtown Branch and old Myrtle Grove Branch. We opened this state-of-the-art facility in early November, increasing our membership 140% from 4,200 to 10,170 by summer 2017. Our staff at this location also doubled from 65 to 125. At the same time, we joined with other regional Ys to offer reciprocal membership and are participating in the Nationwide Membership movement, which will offer Y members access to every Y in the country in 2018. The Bear Levin Studer Family YMCA opened up opportunities for partnerships to provide broader programs for the community. Most significant is our collaboration with Baptist Health Care and The Andrews Institute to include a 4,000-square-foot rehab center inside the branch. In addition, we have worked with Partners in Play and Early Steps, programs based at Sacred Heart Health System that teach parents to use play to encourage their children with developmental delays; ARC Gateway Pals, both by employing their clients and by piloting a group wellness program for adults; and programs that combat chronic disease, such as the Diabetes Prevention Program and Delay the Disease, a Parkinson’s intervention program. Across the association, we strengthened our aquatics program by hiring a seasoned YMCA professional to oversee a new swim curriculum and delivery of 1,254 swimming lessons. We continued managing the Roger Scott and Hunter Pools for the City of Pensacola to expand our aquatics programming even more. We sharpened our focus on youth by serving 487 children in our afterschool program and 300 in summer day camp, adding children’s fitness classes, and opening game rooms. With these accomplishments behind us, it would be easy to sit back and simply enjoy the results. But that’s not our way. Instead, we’re eager to build upon the momentum we’ve generated by looking ahead. We’ve already started researching expansion at the Pullum Branch in Navarre and the Northeast Branch, and we are in early discussions with the Pace community to determine the viability of a Y in that area. So yes, we are proud to celebrate the past year and to acknowledge the donors, volunteers, staff and members who have collectively made it possible. But don’t get too settled, because we’re already writing the next chapter for the history books.

Thanks to a $10,000 grant in honor of Dondre Lewis, we launched the Safety

Around Water program in summer 2017 under the direction of Aquatics Director

Melanie Erickson. The grant was provided by Mike Papantonio of the Pensacola law

firm Levin Papantonio Thomas Mitchell Rafferty & Proctor. Knowing that drowning is

the second-leading cause of death for children ages 5-14, we believe that every

child should learn to be safe in and around water. S.A.W. helps youth overcome the fear

of water, master skills in the pool,

and build confidence

and competence.

We offered S.A.W. at

Hunter Pool to children

participating in the Boys & Girls Club. During the eight weeks we offered the program, 81 youth

ages 6-16 benefitted from the experience, building skills that will serve them for life.

I’m MELANIE. And this is my Y.

“In terms of impact, we really improved the lives of these children.

The best feedback is from the teenagers, who are all far more

confident and enjoy themselves more.” —Melanie Erickson

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

One out of 4 youth in our after-school programs received Y Assistance so they could spend their

weekday afternoons in a safe, enriching environment.

Our afterschool and summer day camps served 1,491 kids who kept their bodies and minds

active when out of school.

We delivered 1,254 swim lessons, helping children learn lifelong skills and reducing the likelihood of drowning

in a community surrounded by water.

We modeled teamwork and good sportsmanship for 1,578 children, who stayed physically active in youth sports programs.

Every child in the Pullum Branch VPK program tested above the state readiness average for children entering Kindergarten.

We delivered 4,668 program services to children through before- and after-school

programs, summer camp, sports and aquatics— programs that also build

self-confidence and instill values.

We partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters to deliver the Reach & Rise mentoring program, where we matched 27 youth

with adult mentors in the community.

I’m ROBERT. And this is my Y.

In the Y pool, Robert Malden feels ageless and weightless. Swimming nearly every day

gives him the consistency he needs to continue making positive changes. Robert

learned to swim at the old Downtown YMCA and was the first member to swim in the new pool at

the Bear Levin Studer Family YMCA. In 1990, everything changed for

Robert when he suffered a terrible car accident

while riding his bicycle home after work. He was hit from behind and run over by a car. His heart officially stopped three

times. After his accident, his family encouraged

him to join the Y to aide in his recovery. Today with the help of family

and role models at the Y supporting him, Robert has made tremendous strides. The

opportunities at the Y for improving one’s life are abundant, and Robert has taken full

advantage, going to the Y most days of the week and enjoying swimming and lifting

weights.

“I’m blessed to be alive today and to be able to go to the Y, even

though living with a disability can be difficult.”

— Robert Malden

HEALTHY LIVING

More than15,000 members enjoyed the opportunity to stay healthy and strong while

building friendship and community.

We gave away $101,698 in Y Assistance for membership—serving 1,685 people—

as part of our commitment that everybody should have the opportunity

to be part of the Y.

About 20% of our members are age 60 or older. For many, the Y is a chance to stay

physically active and socially connected through our Senior Program.

Members challenged themselves and encouraged each other through our Body Challenge, Running and Walking Clubs,

group exercise classes and small group training.

We hosted 27 teams from local companies in our 23rd Annual Corporate Cup Games and

reached 1,000 participants, volunteers and friends through this workplace wellness event.

I’m MARY. And this is my Y.

The Pullum Branch organized its annual food drive in November in partnership with ACTS

Ministries, providing 1,415 pounds of food and 31 turkeys to benefit families in need. The

branch staff believe that the project is an ideal way for the Y to be an asset to our community,

partnering with other organizations

to activate staff and members in a

positive and productive way. Mary Butcher, a

representative with ACTS Ministries, expressed their

gratitude to the Y for collecting food, which enabled the

ministry to feed families not only for

the Thanksgiving holiday, but for

Christmas as well. ACTS supports 150

families a month on a regular basis, but the annual food drive at

the Y is critical to stocking their pantry.

“It’s a privilege to connect to other people in the community to

help. We cannot do this alone.” —Mary Butcher, ACTS

We welcomed 300 special needs kids to Halloween at the Y, where they enjoyed a safe

and unique trick-or-treating experience.

More than 465 donors pledged more than $153,164 to our Annual Campaign—led by

84 Banner Donors who gave $1,000 or more to support the Y’s mission outreach.

In the new Bear Levin Studer Family YMCA, we engaged in program partnerships with Baptist/

Andrews Institute, Sacred Heart Health Systems, and ARC Gateway to offer meaningful wellness

programs to the community.

We opened our doors to anyone who needed a place to meet and connect—churches, Bible study groups, Scout groups,

schools and other nonprofits.

We provided a way for our members and friends to give back, as 390 people gave volunteer time

valued at $188,228 to our organization.
