Building Homes,HABITAT FOR HUMANITY-NORTH CENTRAL GEORGIA
2013 ANNUAL REPORT
Building Lives
BuildHabitat for Humanity-North Central Georgia is about more than building homes. We build brighter futures for our partner families. We build neighborhoods where families feel invested in their community. We build stability for the children of our families. And we build the lives of those who volunteer with our ministry.
2 Habitat for Humanity - North Central Georgia2013 Annual Report
STEWARDSHIP REPORTFROM CHAIRMAN & CEO
Our homeowners are the focus of our ministry. We rightly measure our success in the number of homes we build or rehabilitate and the number of homeowners we serve. And these numbers are impressive. We average over 15 completions annually, and, through December 2013, we have built or rehabbed 249 homes serving approximately 975 family members in our local communities. Our target for 2014 is just as aggressive, as we seek to complete homes for 16 new Habitat homeowners.
Lost among the statistics, though, is the impact that safe, decent housing has upon our homeowners and – even more importantly – their children. A recent report by the MacArthur Foundation, authored by researchers at Boston College and Tufts University, provides scientific support for what we all observe through our experience. Poor quality housing is strongly tied to emotional and behavioral problems in children and, indeed, among the housing characteristics studied in the report, is “the strongest and most consistent predictor” of such problems among low-income children and youth.
The study also found that poor parenting – a major contriburtor to children’s emotional and behavioral problems – was not only strongly associated with, but exacerbated by, poor quality housing.
Several years ago, one of our most dedicated and passionate volunteers movingly spoke at our Volunteer Appreciation Dinner about his commitment to Habitat, concluding, in a nutshell: “I do it for the kids.” He did not need the scientific evidence. He knew it from the smiles on the faces of the children.
Yearly in our Annual Report we have the opportunity to reflect upon the blessings and achievements of our ministry. We ask this year that you take a moment to ponder the impact that your financial and volunteer support has had and will have upon the lives of our partner families. And for this we express our deepest gratitude.

Much of the association between poor quality and unstable housing and children’s well-being operated through parents. The stress and strain of living in poor quality homes or having to move multiple times . . . took its toll, leading to symptoms of depression and anxiety, and to less stable family routines. This in turn helped to explain children’s diminished functioning. Thus, rather than being a source of stability and security, a home lacking some of the most basic elements of comfort may exacerbate other pressures that poor parents face.

Victor and Tina Rodriguez-Mora’s lives felt like a series of hurdles to overcome in the past few years. Their lives were filled with uncertainty – lost employment, health issues, and family members in need of help – that caused them to move from home to home to try to stay above water. Finally their lives feel more certain.
In December 2013, they, along with their two children Victor Jr. & Victoria, moved into their Habitat for Humanity home. Tina was not only excited about owning her own home, she was looking forward to living in a neighborhood where they could plant roots.
“We are so blessed to have been chosen to receive a Habitat for Humanity home. Our children have settled in so well to their new schools and they are so happy at the thought of never having to move again ... One day [we] hope to be able to contribute to someone else’s happiness of living in their own home”
- Tina Rodriguez-Mora
