The exhibition space for public art occupies the ground floor of the historic building on the north side of Beacon Hill in Boston, MA. In keeping with the elegant simplicity of the build-ing, the exhibition space consists of a single hall and elevated retail space which opens into a semi-private seating area. Simple detailing, careful spatial proportioning and a restrained palette of steel, & ceramic combine to create an environment of respectful sensitivity for the presentation of art.

In the reconstruction and addition to a 25-by-40 foot box of ground level retail space on Michigan Avenue, Lord Design Studio explored the notions of privacy, enclosure and exposure on the site by exploiting the neighboring build-ing facades and perceptions of external space. The external form of butt-joined clear glazing segregated from surrounding buildings stands as a basic rectilinear form, serving as an urban landmark. Sections of each subsequent inte-rior space are also “caught” serving as minimal shutters through which information and mer-chandise is interacted with by consumers.

This renovation of a two-story municipal build-ing for Aevum, the founders of an extensive pri-vate art collection of Man Ray artwork involved the integration of additional contemporary art pieces. The design’s rigorous approach to space and detail emphasizes the sympathetic presentation of art.

This transformation of a 7,500-square-foot, four story estate repositions and highlights vertical surfaces to provide a two-story fine art instal-lation at the front entry. The main colonnade and sculpture garden have been moved to the back of the building creating a strong entry sequence that visually supports the horizontal building planes. Interlocking voids form con-nections and allow natural light into the interior. The perception of the surfaces is as much visual as it is a tactile experience. Materials are deliberately chosen and emphasized where their intersection with the occupants are en-couraged or discouraged.

In this house for two art collectors in Lake For-est, IL, the central space is designed around three art pieces by Andreas Gursky. The house opens access to this central space to open landscape facing south and west. The house itself sits in a private property of land flanked by two hills and directed toward Lake Michigan. This art hall points toward the subtle submersion of site into horizon line created by the water and mirrored by the artwork.

The City of Chicago’s Lakeshore Path tunnel at Oak Street is the most salient public departure from downtown Chicago to beach and trail environments. Surface-applied anachroic fins are tinted light gray to match existing concrete and plaster with finishes producing an effect that distorts scale relationships until occupants enter a gilt portal. This column of negative space suggests a strong vertical axis in a pre-dominantly horizontal space allowing a moment to recalibrate visual scale.

Lightness and fabrication were primary consid-erations for this 2,000-square-foot research fa-cility on a steep ravine in a state-protected bay. A continuous skylight facing south lights both the private rooms and public corridors. The lower level opens to a sterile experimental lab and is enclosed by surrounding earth. The two primary interlocking forms are complimentary in plan and section and foster a sense of balance and internal intimacy without imposition to the exterior environment. This also maintains a sleek, low silhouette from outlying areas.

Lord Design Studio conceived of a plan for a 15,000-square-foot public archive and digital database for the City of Chicago’s south loop metra station. A cantilevered bridge on axis with a long sloping underground entry ramp is a major design element. The Facade is a hori-zontal plane of photo voltaic panels functioning as an enormous show window and mutable feature of reflecting light patterns. The bridge is suspended above the solar panels providing a rare view to Lake Michigan above the existing obscured ground level experience from Michi-gan Avenue. The interior plan is subdivided into research, media rooms and community spaces organized along the north-south axis of the metra station property.

This 10,000-square-foot competition entry recognizes the evolution of the Chicago River in relation to the Streeterville neighborhood. The elevated path carefully reflects the ongo-ing nature of user-based adaptation by subtly shifting function and program along a 500 foot long span of river front, while simultaneously connecting walkers and bikers to adjacent residential condominium towers. This creates a continuous narrative by joining multiple entry points. The entire structure shields an intimate gondola taxi service through boutique retail tenants. The river-facing elevation creates a park-based experience of contemplation and community.

This project for a Brazilian artist on Chicago Avenue in Chicago’s River North Neighbor-hood. The condominium has a distinct indus-trial loft interior, which has been preserved rather than subdivided with partitions. The simple forms and colors of polished concrete are laid out in a rigid orthogonal grid based on the building module. The patio is an ob-servation deck facing east toward downtown Chicago and Lake Michigan. Conceptually, the home responds to a free-form manner of Giria, or traditional Brazilian poetic style. Each interior volume uses shape and color to recall the owner’s birthplace. The volumes are as-sembled into a whole and representative of vibrant Brazilian culture.

In this design of a 3,500-square-foot loft space in Gold Coast Chicago, IL the merchandising area has been placed toward the rear of the store, making the front space a visually clean, ambiguous glazed facade from the street. A fully elevated second floor space draws con-sumers to the monolithic entry stair followed by free-flowing succession of retail displays, conceptually tied to the “hemless” felt clothing items on display and for sale.

Located a short distance from the three branches of the Chicago River in downtown Chicago, the two-level corporate headquar-ters is dedicated solely to a global product development brand. The project involves the renovation of and addition to an existing build-ing providing 30,000-square-feet of space. By utilizing sustainable materials that refer to branding and ushering natural light into the building core it is the intent of the project to provide an environment that enables collabora-tion and individualization by the staff and cre-ative teams.

The renovation of this single-story historic cape cod building was intended for small scale art exhibitions. The colonial vernacular was con-trasted by the introduction of a roman brick barrel vault entry hall, modeled after the first subway stations of New England. The front facade was restored to it’s original design. The rear facade was modified to accommodate accessible passage of patrons and occasional larger format art installations.

The design of memorials for “detournament and contiguity” set within an undeveloped land mass along Ireland’s vast hill country. The sim-ple vocabulary of field stone, and copper was intended to reinforce the nature of grief distor-tion over time for a people group, triggered through experience with physical components and surrounded by intimate locations for heal-ing and recollection.

PHILISTIA

This 100,000-square-foot floating facade occupies the zone of Jordanian and Israeli ar-mistice and treaty agreement lines. The instal-lation creates a panoramic observation visible from each side of the Dead Sea establishing a visual and relational bridge connecting cul-tural groups, yet respecting the Dead Sea’s resources. The structure creates a conceptual tower, while quietly alluding to long standing tensions and the attainability of reconciliation.

This art installation was conceived as a virtual reinterpretation of the ancient Greek “Method of Loci.” The renovation to a 500-square-foot dock introduced structural glass floor boards serving as sky lights to the water surface be-low and simultaneous mirror creating a second artificial reflection of the night sky- the quintes-sential “memory palace.”

Reconstruction of a 1,000-square-foot office space. The interior columns were configured to frame a variety of work space scenarios. Interior details were chosen to sympathize with the heavy steel column and beam construction of the original structure.

This fine art installation was derived from rec-ollections of individuals who experienced the same meaningful event, yet did not know each other, and inconsistently recounted details of the past. Dissolved (VS preserved) memories are experienced as metaphor by variations of transparency through standard building materi-als inhabited within the gallery.

This invited competition for a new rural trail includes a 7 mile stretch of state-protected property that had been largely destroyed by fire. The project undertook land renovation ef-forst as well as a new public exhibition pavilion.

This intervention into a residential loft for an artist and his family included the addition of work rooms, a private study, and den. A ser-vies of custom-fabricated steel plates were developed with the owner to serve as concep-tual spatial dividing elemants to create varying degrees of transparent, translucent and total enclosure.
