Department Organization

The Department is responsible for the School Division's 27

schools and two service facilities. That is over 2.3 2.3 millionmillion square feetsquare feet and 631 acres631 acres.

Building & GroundsBuilding & Grounds

Over 40 employees of the Buildings & Grounds Department will work throughout the summer on various tasks including:

• Mowing/grounds• Moving furniture• Assisting contractors• Carpentry work• Electrical work• Mechanical work• Plumbing work

Maintenance

•Detailed cleaning of ALL schools, ceiling to floor.

•Floor refinishing

•Provide services for numerous summer school programs, CAI, YMCA, CFA, Parks & Rec., sports camps, and community building rentals.

Over 140 employees of the Custodial Department will work throughout the summer on various tasks including:

Custodial

• Water fixture audits conducted at all elementary schools, some middle & high schools

• Low-flow sink aerators replaced at 8 schools

• Sink flows reduced from ~2.0 gallons per minute (gpm) to 0.5 gpm

• Water-efficient fixture upgrades started at Hollymead and Burley

With the help of UVA interns, a concentrated effort to conserve water began during the school year and will continue during the summer .

Flooring will be replaced with VCT tile in 10 schools including 38 rooms, select office areas, 3 media centers, 1 cafeteria and 4 mobile classrooms.

•The stage lighting & rigging will be replaced at Albemarle & Western Albemarle High Schools.

•A portion of the replacements will be an upgrade to energy-efficient LED lights.

New serving equipment & appliances will be installed as well as general building improvements to the serving area.

The front entrance will be modified to include two concrete ramps that are wheel chair accessible and ADA compliant.

• Lockers will be replaced at Henley and Jouett Middle Schools.

• In total about 350 units will be replaced.

• The parking lot will be reconfigured for a safer and more efficient layout for student drop-off.

• The gravel student parking lot will be paved.

Playground equipment will be replaced at Murray & Woodbrook Elementary Schools. Each school will receive an upper grade level playground and a lower grade level playground.

• Air conditioning will be installed in the kitchen.

• The exhaust hoods and ceiling will also be replaced in the area.

• One below ground vehicle lift will be replaced at the Vehicle Maintenance Facility (VMF).

• This is the first year of a multi-year project to replace lifts.

• Track, field events, and tennis courts will receive new surfaces.

• Other general improvements to the area will be made as well.

• The HVAC systems in both the cafeteria & the auditorium will be replaced.

• The ceiling & tile flooring in the cafeteria will also be replaced. The lights will be upgraded to LED fixtures.

• The media centers at Brownsville, Jouett & Walton will undergo minor renovations

• The renovations will update these areas to 21st century learning spaces.
