We Give because it’s the right thing to do. We’re in the business of helping people. Our financial products and services help millions of people secure their financial lives, families, and futures. Our volunteer efforts and foundation help with needs our products don’t address. We have more than 6,000 employees around the world, whose collective power makes a difference for those in need.

We Give because it’s good for our business, customers, and communities.  Just as we help our customers plan for the future, we also have a responsibility to contribute to the sustainability of the communities where we operate. Whether it’s through our skills-based volunteer efforts, support and counseling for struggling  homeowners, health and wellness awareness for older adults, or financial education for young people, we’re bringing our best thinking, talents, passion and resources to build thriving communities.   

We Give because it’s good for our employees. Year after year, our employees tell us that our community involvement is one of their favorite things about working for Genworth. What began as a way to meet people in a new town has become one of my favorite and most prized ways to spend my days.

I moved to the Raleigh, North Carolina area and joined the Genworth team in 2009. Being new to town, I was looking for a way to meet people AND get involved in the community —so I was thrilled when I heard about an opportunity to work at the local food bank with my Genworth colleagues. How very efficient!

And, as they say, the rest is history. Working on the backpack program with the Genworth team gave me the opportunity to understand the overwhelming hunger issue in the region and see all the progress that the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina was making —like this story about Kate. I wanted to be part of that progress.

Over the past two years, I’ve been the Food Bank liaison for Genworth employees in Raleigh, coordinated food drives at the State Fair and local post offices, and packaged more potatoes and eggs than I thought existed! As a bonus, I’ve made great friends, both at work and in the community.

I feel very fortunate to be part of a company that recognizes the importance of giving back—and the difference we can make both as individuals and collectively as Genworth employees. Get out there and give back!

Giving with Our HeadsAs a global financial services company, we know the importance of empowering youth to make smart financial decisions in the future. That is why over the past three years, we’ve partnered with EverFi, Inc. to bring My Money, My FutureSM, an initiative that prepares students to make responsible financial choices, to high schools across the state of Virginia and other select locations. EverFi is a nationally recognized online financial literacy platform that uses the latest technology to engage today’s digital generation in real life decision-making about money, credit, and savings. Working with teachers, this innovative approach is transforming the way students learn about money matters and teaching them the skills they need to become financially responsible citizens.

Giving with Our HeadsOur skills-based volunteering program allows our employees to leverage the same skills that help our customers to benefit the organizations that are serving our communities.  From marketing campaigns to strategy planning to data management, our employees are helping non-profit organizations strengthen their operations and get better results.

We worked with: FeedMoreSM in Richmond, Virginia, the core hunger relief organization for Central Virginia, to develop a clear roadmap to automate and streamline their volunteer tracking system, managing more than 8,000 volunteers annually. United Way’s Partners for Impact program in Sydney, Australia, where Jo Ann Rabitz, Chief Human Resources Officer – Genworth Australia, partnered with Maxine Bartlett, HR Manager – Inspire Foundation, to develop a new manager training program and identify ways to address Maxine’s challenges with employee communication. Stop Hunger Now, a Raleigh, North Carolina-based international hunger relief agency, to develop a comprehensive market plan to drive their business expansion in the United States. Community Collaborative, a consortium of non-profits serving hunger needs in the Lynchburg, Virginia area to assess community needs and gaps, as well as develop a strategy for the future. Lawyers in Schools in Middlesex, England, a program that pairs lawyers with secondary school students in economically deprived areas to increase their understanding of the justice system, as well as their rights and responsibilities.

Putts4Charity® Since 2007, Genworth’s Putts4Charity, in partnership with The Tour Players’ Foundation, has involved both European Golf Tour Professionals and golfing spectators to raise more than €1,000,000 for several organizations—most notably, SOS Children’s Villages, an international non-profit dedicated to providing loving homes to orphaned and abandoned children in over 540 villages worldwide. Genworth brand ambassador Pablo Larrazábal visited one of the SOS Children’s Villages in Barcelona, Spain in October. Check out his visit here.

United Way We partner with United Way each year for our employee giving campaigns in Canada and the United States to harness our collective impact in addressing the most pressing issues in our local communities. In 2012, we surpassed the $1 million mark in contributions toward building healthy communities for the second consecutive year. • Total $ raised through U.S. employee contributions and events: $845,000 • Percentage of employees contributing: 55% • Location with the highest participation: Phoenix, Arizona at 94% • Foundation contribution: $250,000 • Genworth Canada employee contribution: $45,000

London, England In London, England, we’ve worked with Habitat for Humanity to support the development of and implementation of the Empty Houses to Homes Programme, an innovative project for the revitalization of empty buildings in London, which will provide much needed housing solutions for families on housing waiting lists. Our financial contributions—$70,000 in 2012—enabled Habitat for Humanity to take out a lease on a property that had become derelict in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, having undergone considerable fire damage and requiring a complete gutting, repair, and refurbishment. Starting in May 2012, the work was completed with the help of more than 400 community volunteers (including many from Genworth) over a nine-month period.

Oakville, Ontario, Canada Genworth Canada is a longstanding supporter of Habitat for Humanity Canada (HFHC). In 2012, we completed the third year of a $1 million three-year commitment to HFHC’s “The Path to Home” project —a program that supports homebuilding grants in communities across Canada. Many of our employees sit on HFHC Boards and volunteer regularly on build sites. We contributed more than $2 million to HFHC affiliates, and countless hours of labor on build sites across the country. To further our support of Habitat we recently signed a new three-year $1 million commitment.

A key part of our partnership with Habitat is our Meaning of Home Contest. Since 2007, the Genworth Canada Meaning of Home Contest has invited students in grades four, five and six across Canada to submit a written essay about what home means to them for a chance to direct $60,000 to a HFHC build of their choice in Canada. To date, the contest has resulted in approximately $570,000 in total grants from Genworth Canada being directed to more than 30 Canadian HFHC affiliates. Participation in 2012 grew by more than 55 percent over 2011, and more than 250 percent in some provinces. With Genworth Canada donating an additional $5 per entry, every participating student helped bring a family closer to homeownership.

Giving with Our HandsOur Raleigh, North Carolina employees truly value the dream of homeownership—and they work to support that dream for more people both in the office, as part of our Global Mortgage Insurance Division, and outside of the office, through our partnership with Habitat for Humanity. In 2012, our Raleigh team worked on the following projects: • 13 volunteers from the Legal team put in 104 hours as part of the Habitat DeConstruction Program, removing hardwood floors, doors, windows, cabinetry, lighting, lumber, plumbing, hardware, and architectural elements from a home slated for demolition. The salvaged materials are then sold in the Habitat ReStore where all profits go toward building more Habitat homes in Wake County. • 11 volunteers from the Human Resources team put in 88 hours on a build during our Month of Service, helping a deserving family get into a home. • 11 volunteers put in 88 hours as part of a Habitat for Humanity Women’s Build, a national effort to build homes that are funded and constructed by women.
