Message from the Country Managing Partner

Dear readers,

Let me introduce you to PwC Czech Republic’s third Corporate Responsibility report, a report that we release on an annual basis.

The report outlines our Corporate Responsibility activities and the achievements PwC Czech Republic has had during the past financial year.

The recent negative economic developments and the level of uncertainty about what the future holds have naturally had an impact on us along with other businesses. This is one of the additional reasons why we believe that we have an obligation to take a leadership role in promoting and practicing Corporate Responsibility (CR).

We also realise that, in order to become a distinctive professional services firm, we must integrate CR into all aspects of what we do – ranging from contributing to a stable and transparent Czech market place, providing advice to our clients, developing our people to their full potential, minimising our environmental impact or working with our local communities.

Throughout all our actions, we are developing responsible leaders that have the skills, experience and build relationships necessary to create value for our clients across all aspects of social, economic and environmental sustainability.

In a recent employee survey, 78% of our employee said they are satisfied with the actions PwC is taking to be socially responsible. This is a positive result and shows we are on the right track. We will also continue the hard work in the upcoming years to become a distinctive and responsible business in today’s society.

Transparent way of doing business

As a professional services firm, our long-term survival depends on our ability to build and sustain trust. Our reputation and success depends on the professionalism and integrity of each and every partner and employee. To help achieve this, we’ve set an ethical framework that incorporates applicable standards, laws and regulations, such as the standards set to maintain our independence from our audit clients. But we’ve chosen to go beyond these legal requirements by establishing a culture that upholds integrity, objectivity and professional ethics, and professional competence.

Code of conduct

While we conduct our business within the framework of applicable professional standards, laws, regulations and internal policies, we also acknowledge that they do not govern all types of behaviour. In addition to them, PwC has developed a Code of Conduct that is an integral part of our day-to-day work. It is based on our core values of excellence, teamwork and leadership.

Ethics helpline

We are committed to ensuring that we have appropriate systems in place to address complaints or allegations of improper conduct. All partners and employees are obliged to report any unethical behaviour via the internal Ethics Helpline.

Client selection process

We make sure we keep our integrity and responsibility when it comes to the clients we serve. We only work for those companies whose activities are legal and do not violate our principles. Strict compliance procedures are in place to ensure that the current or new engagements do not impose any reputational risks as we do not wish to associate ourselves with such companies.

Client service feedback

To monitor and assess our client’s satisfaction with the services we provide, we conduct an annual feedback review with every client. We consider the ongoing dialogue with our clients about the quality of our services and value we bring them to be a key element of our client relationships.

Independence policy

Our firm’s independence policy helps to ensure that we conduct business relationships without any financial interest in or personal or business relationships with our audit clients and their affiliates. All of our people are required to participate in interactive independence training sessions as well as complete an annual confirmation with respect to their personal responsibilities as they relate to independence and firm compliance.

Driving competitiveness and innovation

“A PwC survey among CEOs of top Czech companies shows that while immediately after the crisis in 2010, Czech CEOs expected their companies to start growing in the medium-term, in 2011 they seem to be fully aware of all the risks and challenges that go hand-in-hand with the fragile recovery,” said Jiří Moser, Country Managing Partner of PwC in the Czech Republic.

“Maestro is a look into a mirror. It is a workshop for companies who want to learn more about themselves,” explains Věra Výtvarová, partner in Assurance services.

Czech CEO survey and dialogue

PwC engages in a regular dialogue with the leaders of the foremost Czech businesses, last year focusing especially on topics such as strategies for sustainable growth or discussions about the future of the Czech economy in the context of global developments.

PwC has conducted and released, now for the second consecutive year, a local follow-up to the traditional Global CEO Survey, a major PwC thought leadership that has been running for 14 consecutive years. With the title From crisis to battle: Czech CEOs have healthy scepticism, PwC Czech Republic focused on analysing the current issues Czech CEOs are momentarily facing. In addition, the survey also entails the perspectives on the future development of the Czech, European and global marketplace.

PwC engaged in discussions and analysed responses from almost 70 leaders of large companies across all industries in the Czech Republic. We shared the report with CEOs and organised discussion events to create an opportunity to share experience and opinions among the leaders.

Maestro

Driving strategy into sustainable performance

Last year we introduced Maestro, a one-day, highly-interactive planning workshop where a client’s leadership team explores the factors that influence business performance by assessing a company’s ability to execute its strategic goals. We believe that this tool can help Czech businesses increase their competitiveness and achieve long-term objectives in a sustainable way.

TOP 25 women of Czech business

The TOP women of Czech business is an annual project run by Hospodářské noviny. Its objective is to rank the 25 most influential women in Czech business. A special jury composed of renowned HR consultants and headhunters and representatives of Hospodářské noviny nominates and selects women for the ranking. For the first time in the history of the ranking, a non-HR advisor – PwC – was invited to be a member of the jury where it was represented by Jiří Moser, the Country Managing Partner. The contest is an important signal for the Czech business environment and the role the female managers play in it. We also took an active part in the Odyssey mentoring programme, a spin-off of the ranking.

Fraud Forum

Established in 2009 by PwC, Fraud Forum brings together almost 200 members who share their knowledge and participate in research to help prevent, detect and investigate fraud and economic crime. Members of the Fraud Forum come from various working fields such as finance, internal audit, risk management, security, in-house legal and compliance functions as well as fraud investigation. The platform helps us to share experience to prevent business crime on the Czech market which is one of the key issues negatively impacting competitiveness.

www.pwc.cz/fraudforum

The Academy by PwC

Thanks to our international experience and leading market position, we share our knowledge of different industries across the following key areas such as Finance & Accounting, Internal Audit & Controlling, Taxation & Legislation, Human Resources, Management & Leadership.

www.pwc.cz/academy

The Academy by PwC is one of the leading training institutions in the Czech Republic and across the CEE and ME region. The vision of the Academy is to raise the standards of business education on the Czech market by providing professional qualifications and courses.

• This year the Academy reached almost 3,000 students in 17 countries including Mongolia, out of which 500 students came from our clients where they hold expert and management positions.

• Last year it performed 241 teaching days.• ... and the pass rates in ACCA exams of the Academy

students are still 20% higher than global average.

“Our strategy is to deliver value and to help develop the competent and motivated human capital that is needed in all areas of business,” says Joe Appleton, Leader of the Academy.

14 Corporate Responsibility Report 2011

Promoting responsible leadership

At PwC Czech Republic we strive to be a leader in responsibility and to help improve the quality of the Czech business environment – and we don’t want to just talk about it. We want to lead by example.

Memberships in professional and business associations

As a member of almost 40 professional organisations, we share our knowledge and expertise to widen our impact on the market and promote best practises. We also use these various platforms to engage with our stakeholders, build relationships with them and to be part of shaping the public debate on important economic, business and social issues.

In 2010 we became active members of two new platforms that aim to promote responsible leadership.

Business for the Community

Business for the Community is a platform which helps to improve the cooperation of companies as well as their professional background, and allows them to share experience and seek new approaches in the area of social responsibility. Our Country Managing Partner is one of the members of the Leadership team associating several CEOs of the member companies.

CSR Club at the Netherlands-Czech Chamber of Commerce

In late 2010, we joined a newly established CSR Club that brings together members of the chamber of commerce who wish to share best practises in the area of corporate responsibility. One of the latest initiatives, Afternoon Tea workshops, includes a series of informal discussions on various issues that are conducted by the members for members every first Wednesday of the month.

PwC Czech Republic 15

Workshops on Corporate Responsibility

All throughout the year PwC uses various opportunities to point out the importance of the responsible way of doing business. In the past financial year we gave presentations or conducted individual workshops at several conferences that focused on the importance of strategic CSR such as the Strategic CSR conference organised by Economia in May 2011 in Prague or the regional workshop on CSR in February 2011 in Ostrava.

We act as an expert partner of national awards for Corporate Responsibility and philanthropy

Since 2007, PwC Czech Republic has been acting as an expert partner to the Czech Donors Forum, the organiser of the prestigious annual contest, Top Philanthropist, on the methodology and evaluation of the two quantitative categories of the contest. As of 2010, PwC Czech

PwC involvement• Jiří Moser, Country Managing Partner

is one of the mentors.• Lenka Čábelová, M&C Leader, became

a member of the selection committee for the NGO managers and additionally became the mentor of one of them.

• Managers from the NGO sector attend internal PwC business & management skills trainings.

“For me, the NGO mentoring was a perfect chance to see how my experience can work in another environment. The people I have met during this project are becoming my friends – and, as I try to involve more people in the project, my working relations are acquiring new dimensions. The cooperation with SPJ was personally for me both an eye-opener and a motivation booster. I do what I and others perceive as our jobs which we see as commonplace, but all of a sudden someone looks at this and sees something of unique value. It was worth it just for this feeling,” commented Lenka Čábelová, M&C Leader, PwC Czech Republic.

Republic serves as an advisor and member of the jury of the annual VIA Bona Award that acknowledges exemplary philanthropy by companies and individuals who have a history of strong support for the work of non-profit organisations in the Czech Republic.

Odyssey mentoring programme

In early 2011 PwC became one of the mentors in the second edition of the Odyssey project originated by Vodafone Czech Republic, a non-commercial cross-industry and cross-company mentoring programme for talented Czech female professionals.

The core idea is that senior leaders of Czech businesses (men and women) dedicate their time to regular mentoring of high potential women in middle management positions with the aim unleashing their potential and helping them grow.

Since 2011, the project is also open to female managers from non-profit sectors to not only help them develop, but to also connect the profit and non-profit worlds and help them understand each other and find areas for cooperation.

“Our people are fundamental to our goal of becoming a distinctive professional services firm. We equip our people with the skills and business acumen they need to be successful in their current roles as well as throughout their entire careers,” says Jana Krajcarová, HC Leader.

Almost 70% of our employees attended workshops and trainings on business and management skills.

Coaching, learning & development

Providing quality opportunities for our people and helping them grow and succeed as professionals is a key component of our people strategy. We continue to invest in our people’s development throughout their careers – to support them in their current positions as well as prepare them to progress to more senior roles within the firm or elsewhere. Learning opportunities at PwC are a mix of on-the-job experience, coaching, and professional and business and management courses, which are supported by a range of activities including mobility assignments.

The programmes below are just a few examples of how we support the professional and personal growth of our people.

The Academy

As mentioned in the Marketplace section, the Academy is our specialised training centre offering education to clients and our employees. The Academy provides curriculums such as IFRS Centre of Excellence and ACCA Advantage.

Advisory University

It’s an intensive one-week programme for our advisors organised in various European countries. The great variety of expert and management courses is conducted by experienced colleagues from all over the world.

Tax Academy

It’s a four-year training programme for our tax consultants. It consists of expert, management and sales trainings. The graduates receive a PwC Tax Academy Diploma.

Business & management trainings

To develop true future leaders, we focus not only on the technical and knowledge, but we enable our people to develop their soft skills through a large variety of in-house management and business skills trainings.

Global Mobility

Improving the mobility of our people through international work opportunities in other PwC territories is an important component of developing our key talent as we seek to meet the changing needs of our clients.

Milestone promotion trainings

We provide our newly promoted employees with special development trainings to prepare them for the next steps in their career.

Buddy system for new joiners

To make the start in the new environment easier, we have introduced a programme for all new joiners. Upon his or her arrival, each new employee is assigned a buddy who will familiarise them with life here at PwC.

Key talents programme

Our Key Talents programme is about helping our people to achieve their full potential while ensuring that we have the right people in the right roles to deliver value to our clients.

Career development

We help our staff to develop based on their competencies, skills and aspirations. We have a performance management process in place that helps our staff to record their accomplishments throughout the year, better assess their individual performance and provide feedback on how well they demonstrate certain core competencies, behaviours and our firm values of excellence, teamwork and leadership.

Individual coaching

We conduct individual one-on-one coaching sessions.

Page 19: Building Sustainable Relationships Corporate ... · Platinum Approved Employer by ACCA for continuous professional education (2011, Central & Eastern Europe) PwC is the Most Desired

PwC Czech Republic 19

Measuring our success

The more engaged our people are, the more likely they are to be motivated to contribute to the success of the firm, each other and the community. Our annual employee survey plays a critical role in obtaining their opinions and feedback on our key people and firm priorities as well as measuring their engagement.

Every year PwC reviews the overall feedback, identifies problematic issues that were generated in the survey and prepares an action plan to address them.

Flexible working arrangements

PwC has a number of flexible work arrangements (FWA) programmes which provide our people with solutions to fit their needs for balancing work and life priorities. The FWA include: part-time, home office, flexible working hours, unpaid leave/sabbaticals, etc. In the summer, we offer the compressed workweek option.

PwC Choices

Since 2009, PwC has been using a flexible system to provide benefits. This system is called PwC Choices. Each employee is entitled to an annual virtual budget of points and can choose from over 2,000 providers of various services and products according to their own preferences.

Wellness and work/life flexibility are very important to our people. With this in mind, we are focused on making ongoing improvements in this area, including better communication of our existing wellness and flexibility programmes and improved leadership and manager support for our people.

Developing young talents

Cooperation with academia

Our cooperation with the academic world includes a number of common projects such as providing lectures on various business topics at universities and running one of the most popular academic programmes called Psychological Diagnostics. This programme provides students with an in-depth psychological assessment of their career potential.

We also organise interactive competitions such as Smart and Taxy for the students. These are designed to encourage students to become leaders in the area of finance and tax.

Student surveys

During the last year we started with a series of short surveys, so-called Student Barometers, that are set up to gauge student opinion and focus on various issues and trends at the universities.

More than half of the students (51%) stated that, while looking for a job, they are also interested in responsible companies. For almost half of the students approached (43%), CR is actually one of the deciding factors they use to determine their future employer.

We work together with 8 Czech universities and 10 student organisations and focus together on developing the potential and talent of young people who might in the future become our colleagues and future leaders.

Our impact on the environmentAs part of our Corporate Responsibility strategy, last year we developed a three-year Environmental Action Plan (EAP) that provides a holistic framework to help us manage our environmental impact. Our efforts are focused on minimasing our greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), and reducing our waste production and raising awareness of environmental issues among our staff and in our communities.

Our key focus areas & activities

Carbon management

• Development of the Carbon management plan

• Greener travel• Looking ahead – Prague

PwC Czech Republic 23

Carbon managementWe’ve set ourselves a challenging target of cutting our carbon emissions by 25% per employee by financial year 2013 from a 2008 baseline.

Carbon management plan

Under the global Greenhouse Gas Protocol standards, our emissions are distinguished by scope 1 (direct emissions we control, e.g. from boilers), scope 2 (indirect emissions, e.g. electricity from suppliers) and scope 3 (indirect emissions we don’t

• minimise the intensity of our CO2e (equivalent carbon dioxide) emissions by making operational efficiencies and investing in technological innovations

• engage our people in reducing their carbon emissions both in and outside the office

control, e.g. from outsourced activities or employee travel). We’ve developed a carbon management plan that aims to:

• measure and report our carbon footprint and work with our suppliers to understand our supply chain footprint

“In December 2012, the Prague office will be relocated to a new building. The selected City Green Court in Prague 4-Pankrác is the first LEED Platinum pre-certified building in the Czech Republic. LEED Platinum is actually the highest green certification which can be achieved,” says Milena Beránková, PwC Infrastructure Leader. The Green City Court

Greener travel

We encourage our employees to use alternative means of transport, be it while commuting to the office or client travel. We have equipped our buildings for example with facilities that make travelling to work by bike easier. We also extensively use videoconferencing. We support car pooling where possible.

Looking ahead

In 2013, the Prague office will be relocated to a new building, the City Green Court, Pankrác, Prague 4. The new premises are being developed to meet the highest Platinum criteria for international environmental LEED certification.

Waste management and recycling

Recycling in the office

We’re working with our suppliers and our employees to continually improve our waste measurement and management. Waste processing in PwC is managed by our outsourced contractor and we work together to measure and report data for each waste stream, for each of our offices. We currently recycle the following items: paper, plastics, glass, batteries and lighting devices.

Other green office initiatives

Besides recycling, we support default double-sided printing, printing on recycled paper that is set as the default printing paper in all printers and offices. Our meeting rooms are equipped with white boards and glass water jars that replaced previous plastic bottles. We traditionally use recycled paper towels.

Employee engagementWe have undertaken a variety of initiatives to raise environmental awareness and engage our staff in environmental activities. Here are a few examples of our activities.

Earth Hour

On Saturday, 26 March 2011, at 8:30 p.m., all three PwC offices participated in Earth Hour, an annual World Wildlife Fund event to raise awareness on energy consumption and climate change. We switched off 100% of our total office space. In addition to turning off office lights, we also encouraged our employees to participate at home.

Green week

Held every year in May, Green week provides an opportunity for PwC to promote environmental awareness and encourage sustainability in both inside and outside the workplace. This year, the week kicked off with a themed fundraising breakfast to support Greenways, a project by the Partnerství foundation, continued with internal contests and finished with a volunteering event.

Green days

In the follow-up to May Green week, PwC organised three volunteering events for all three PwC offices.

Ten volunteers from the Prague office helped out with the reparation of the animal shelter that is under the management of the Czech Union for Nature Conservation. Nineteen colleagues from our Brno office spent their Green day raking up cut grass and cleaning up in the Pálava nature reserve. Half of the Ostrava office spent their Green days volunteering in the Ostrava ZOO, their traditional volunteering partner.

“It was the first time I participated in an event like this. I like the idea of organising these activities as a contribution to helping nature and to getting my colleagues out of the office. I will definitely go next time.”

“Green days are great opportunities to network with colleagues while helping nature. Being out of the office, thinking about different things and knowing we do important things that are well evaluated by people responsible for maintaining the wildlife and our natural surroundings is time perfectly spent. But I had to go to sleep that evening at 8 pm. I was totally exhausted!”

Support of social entrepreneurship

Good Entrepreneurship 2010

In 2009, PwC set up a partnership with Donors Forum and the Netherlands-Czech Chamber of Commerce. Their joint efforts resulted in two editions of the Good Entrepreneurship programme (2009 and 2010), a series of educational workshops that focused on professionalism and the development of business skills of Czech NGOs. In addition to financial support, PwC also provided premises as well as lecturers for workshops during which the NGOs can consult with the experts on concrete projects they designed and elaborated on throughout the training programme. The project concluded at the end of 2010 and, since then, has taken on a new format. For details, please see the project Success Strategies for NGOs.

The Academy and Club of social entrepreneurship

Since 2010, PwC has been hosting a series of the Academy workshops for social entrepreneurship organised by the VIA Foundation and University of West Bohemia. The PwC Club serves as the venue for the

quarterly meetings and Social Entrepreneurship Club events. This is a great opportunity for PwC to learn more about the needs and the condition of social entrepreneurship in the Czech Republic and address its future needs.

“I have had the chance to participate in many high-quality trainings, but this one was really exceptional. I have crossed over the imaginary line of the non-profit sector. I heard the opinions of people from business. We have a lot of problems in common. Sometimes we solve them differently, but there is often only one approach,” says one of the NGO managers who took part in our business skills trainings.

Odyssey mentoring programme

As mentioned in the previous chapter entitled Marketplace, in early 2011 PwC became one of the mentoring partners of the high-potential female managers from the non-profit sector. Besides mentoring PwC offers the NGO managers an option to participate in internal business skills trainings. What value can such cooperation between the non-profit and corporate sectors bring?

“The Odyssey programme brought me a unique personal and professional experience. I am very grateful for the opportunity to meet my mentor Lenka Čábelová from PwC in a personal and informal way. She has shared her valuable experience with me, drew my attention to the “business approach towards thinking about our activities” and inspired me to take further steps to secure financial self-sufficiency and sustainability of our organisation,” said Lenka Ouředníčková, Sdružení pro probaci a mediaci v justici, o.s.

“We dedicate ourselves to people development – we prove our focus and skills by sharing them with others and giving people the opportunity to experience our mentors’ philosophies and our learning programmes,“ says Jana Krajcarová about the participation of NGO managers in our internal trainings.

Success Strategies for NGOs conferences

In early 2011, the original Good Entrepreneurship project was significantly transformed to address the actual situation that exists in the non-profit sector after the economic crisis of the late 2000s. The new pilot version took place in June 2011 in the PwC premises and took the form of a one-day educational conference that was visited by 120 participants from the non-profit sector, academia and business. The central focus of this edition was Management of Human Resources in the non-profit sector where professionals from both the corporate and non-profit sectors shared their experience and discussed the current problems and solutions for the non-profit sector. The follow-up edition which focused on marketing and communication in the non-profit sector took place in October 2011. Besides its premises, PwC provides supports to the organisation and our employees share their expertise on the discussion panels.

Vesmírna job training internships

In 2009, PwC started cooperation with Máme otevřeno?, o.s. on one of its major job training programmes for mentally challenged people, Vesmírna café. Since then, PwC has been regularly hosting a one-week job-training internships for clients of Vesmírna in the PwC Club. The programme aims to provide them with an alternative working experience and easier integration into society and ultimately the labour market by practicing to run the café in the PwC Club. This year we have also extended the offer to clients of the Transit integration programme. Since 2009, we have already hosted 12 clients of Máme otevřeno?, o.s.

Engagement of our employees

Community projects

We encourage our employees to get directly connected with their community. This new form of engagement enables our employees to come up with their own idea for a Community project, apply for an internal PwC grant

and win up to CZK 10,000 in seed money for the project’s realisation. In the last year, the PwC grant committee, consisting of PwC employees from different departments, selected four projects and three of them were realised. Employees can nominate their projects once a year.

Blood donation week

One of the winning projects, organised by Matouš Michněvič, our Advisory Manager, set up a company-wide initiative to raise awareness of the importance of  blood donation during one of the February weeks.

Altogether more than 75 people showed interest in blood donation and more than 30 people participated in the “Myths&Facts about blood donation” event. Despite the flu season 24 people came to donate blood during that week. The concept aimed to support long-term blood donation.

Christmas Charity and clothes collection

Christmas Charity is one of our longest running traditional fundraising projects in which our employees can choose from a number of pre-selected NGO projects and directly support it by making a contribution that is deducted directly from their salary. In the winter of 2010, we managed to raise almost CZK 277,000 which is twice as much as we raised the previous year and ten times more than in 2002 when the PwC Christmas Charity first started. This is so far the best result in the history of this collection. PwC as a firm matched this sum which amounted to CZK 567,000 in total and was distributed among the following NGOs and their projects: Fond ohrožených dětí, Máme otevřeno? o.s., Dům tří přání, Okamžik and Český svaz ochránců přírody.

Moreover, during the traditional December clothes collection, we raised donations worth CZK 27,800 that were sold throughout Sue Ryder charity shops. The proceeds were used to finance the main activities of the Sue Ryder Home, like personal care and assistance for the elderly.

Fundraising breakfasts

One of the newest engagement opportunities that have quickly risen in popularity are the fundraising breakfasts. Every three or four months, the PwC Club in Prague turns into a busy café for a few hours. The idea is that PwC volunteers sell their home-baked goodies to their colleagues for a symbolic price. The proceeds from the fundraising are then used for selected charity projects. Last year we managed to raise almost CZK 24,000 using this approach.

“I have been cooperating with VIA Foundation for the past 9 years, the first 6 years as a member of the Supervisory board and as a member of the Board for the last 3 years. I admire the great enthusiasm and professionalism with which the employees of the foundation work. What personally draws me towards this cooperation is the ability to share parts of my experience and knowledge that are used for a good cause. The meetings of the Board itself are an interesting enrichment as I am able to get insights into areas I am not in regular touch with at PwC,” says Lenka Mrázová, Director in the Tax and Legal Services and Community Leader.

Sharing skills and know-how

We recognise that non-profit organisations primarily need help increasing the efficiency of their work, so we add value by providing the skills and assistance these organisations need, be it in the form of educational workshops, one-on-one mentoring, pro bono services, etc.

Working on supervisory boards of NGOs and contest committees

Our employees also function as members of boards of non-profit organisations, for example, Jiří Moser in Junior Achievement, Petr Kříž in Transparency International, Lenka Mrázová in VIA Foundation, or Petr Hájek in OKD Foundation.

In addition, we participate in the selection committees in contests such as the annual VIA Bona Awards for philanthropy or Být vidět that evaluates the PR of non-profit organisations.
