Nearly a year has gone by since my installation as Poten-tate of LuLu Shrine, 2015. I would like to write about all the activities my Lady Bobbie and I attended throughout the year but it would take a whole FEZ to list them.

The year is nearing an end but there are still more activities yet to look forward to – the Shriners Hospital for Chil-dren, Philadelphia Walk For Love” at LuLu Shrine, 10 nights of the Haunted House, Beef ‘n Beer Comedy Night, Fall Con-cert, Ladies Luncheon, Magic Show, and trip to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with the laying of the wreath. Plus all the holiday parties!

The weather is starting to turn so that must mean the Virginia Beach & the Rodeo are over. Yes this is the last Fez for the year. I would like to thank the Potentate for letting me do some needed repairs around the building. The building has been neglected for a while & some cosmetic & needed repairs had to be taken care of.

We replaced the ceiling tiles & lights in the Great Hall & lobby area. In doing so we had to rent a scissor jack which unfortunately costs almost $1000 / week not counting the tiles. We had to replace (2) motors in the Great Hall AC unit. Rich has painted the Merrymac Room, replaced the wall fix-tures & hung up some new pictures.

We also replaced two AC units in the building. We had (4) different companies come out to repair our ice machine. Hopefully this last one who repairs the ice machine at the hospital will get it working correctly. He did say it is getting old & we should start thinking about replacing it.

I would be remiss if I did not thank my whole staff, yes both of them. Since the beginning of the year we lost June who was a fixture here & also Matt Powlus. Chrissy goes way beyond what is expected of her. Whether it is stuffing all the rodeo, circus & magic show daddy tickets or doing all the jobs

Stinky & Finky asks her to do without complaining.

When Matt decided to leave because of illness, we lost a bull. Matt loved to work outside cutting the grass & he would come in the middle of the night & flip a room. Now this year I received a lot of flak over the cost of the landscaper I hired. Well when Matt left it was just before the Cir-cus & I needed the grass cut then. Everyone tells me they know “a guy”. I did receive one viable option which I will go with next year.

By the way ‘Manpower’ & those types of companies do not do landscaping. Rich is doing a yeoman’s job. He takes care of the building, helps get the booths ready for the circus & rodeo, helps clean those areas before & after the events. He also pitches in & helps the Wednesday guys when they need the help. I have called (5) companies to come out & inspect

keep this philanthropy as successful as it has been in the past.

There is no way that I can thank each and every one of you for all that you have done for our Shrine in 2015. To name some is to omit others, so I would like to extend my personal thanks and gratitude to my Mentors, Past Potentates, Divan, Chief Aide, and our Nobility and their Ladies who have worked so hard to help support LuLu Shrine and our kids at Shriners Hospital for Children, Philadelphia. Also spe-cial thanks to the “gang” in the front office (Recorder Joel Brookstein, P.P., Treasurer Hugh McGinness, Office Secretary Chrissy Schultz, and Maintenance/Building Services, Rich Shultz) who did a great job as a team their first year together. Many thanks to all for your work, support, and for stepping up to the plate when needed. And a final thank you to my Lady Bobbie.

I am very proud of our LuLu Shrine and the dedication and loyalty of our members. Through the support of you and your Ladies the Shrine events have been a huge success.

My Lady Bobbie and I wish you and your families a very enjoyable holiday season.

It’s great to be a Shriner! Being on the helm for the year 2015 was a privilege and now we sail into the year 2016. Soon I will hand the helm over to Noble Joseph Rocco and his Lady Joy. May they enjoy as great a year as we did.

Yours in the Faith, Matthew W. Hallowell 2015 Potentate, LuLu Shrine

our mold issue. First they have to test for “Levels & Type” before work is started. If that is not enough, just today our hot water heater went & has to be replaced. We looked up the cost of the replacement model & it is over $5000. Nothing is cheap.

Speaking of the Wednesday guys, there is basically only (3) left to do what is required around here. George Scheer-baum, Fred Simkins & Jerry Schmidt. Unfortunately at the end of the year we are going to lose Jerry. Thanks for all your help this year & every year. If you can spare some time on a Wednesday morning come out & these guys will find some-thing for you to do.

Another Virginia Beach has come & gone. The weather was good & I guess you really do need a good High Priest & Prophet!! Since dropping down to the under 1800 member category we have done much better in competitions. We took (6) trophies in the parade & we also took a few individual awards. There seemed to be some confusion about one of the trophies. The second place for Best Float was for the Bucks County Boat. I am trying to get the official judges scoring to prove it to them. They just don’t want to concede the fact they won was because I did such an outstanding job as “General Whatchamacallit”. I must say myself it was a great portrayal by me. Seriously next year hopefully we will have a bigger crowd & take home even more awards. You must be waiting breathlessly for this MASA information.

2016 Spring MASA will be April 27th – April 30th 2016 @ Willow Valley, Lancaster Pa. & Fall MASA will be, and you guessed it Virginia Beach Sept. 7th – Sept. 11th.

2017 Spring MASA will be April 27th – April 29th @ Wood-lands Resorts & Fall MASA will be Virginia Beach Sept. 6th – Sept. 10th.

2018 Spring MASA will be April 26th – April 28th @ TBD in Pittsburgh & Fall MASA will be Virginia Beach, Sept. 5th – Sept. 8th.

Preliminary numbers are in for the Rodeo. As I did for the Circus, below are the numbers for the booths. It seems people would like to know how they did on those evenings. I would like to take credit for the chart (and I will) but it was Hugh McGinniss who did it. As you can see we did pretty well. All

I mainly look at the number of cars the Patrol parks for each event. Saturday night we did just shy of 500 & only about 30 or so less on Sunday. It gets more difficult to get Patrol guys out to help with parking. Luckily we get a few Patrol ladies to help but we can always use some more.

We had our annual Golf outing at LuLu Country Club it was well attended. The weather started out on the verge of rain but cleared & it was a really nice day. Good food & good company. No figures are in yet but we should do pretty well. Thanks to the committee & all who helped. Speaking of those who helped. Chrissy, Hugh & myself worked the 12th hole. I heard some comments about me closing the office that day. Just for the record that was only the second day this year Chrissy has missed & I think it’s important for her to be able to attend those type of Shrine events. Also Margie & Grace worked that same hole @ the pin & Evelyn & Laura worked the 15th hole. First Lady Bobbi worked the 50/50 chances. It is a great hospital fund raising event & lots of fun. So please consider volunteering next year.

Our Hospital fund raiser Paint Party was a lot of fun. We had mostly ladies who actually painted & most were not affil-iated with LuLu. We are planning the next one in October of 2016. We did have 56 “artists” there & we raised $2,000.00 for the hospital. October 3rd is our hospital Walk for Love at this facility. Unfortunately this is a rain or shine event. We could possibly be in for wind & rain but hopefully it will hold up for us.

If you are not receiving the Constant Contact messaging please get me your email address & I will add you to the list. If not, you might not get the info in a timely manner.

On a sad note, Lenape Shrine Club will be folding their tent the end of December. It is really a shame when a club can-not get officers & or enough members to make the meetings. Restaurants need better attendance to make it worthwhile for them & if not they have to raise their prices.

Remember if I can be of any assistance, do not hesitate to call. I’m in the directory

Very soon, LuLu Temple Year 2015, will be history. Was 2015 a positive or negative year? Each Noble will be judge and jury. I would like to share my opinion, not as Assistant Rabin, rather a Noble.

My Lady, Gail, along with our children and grand-child, attended High Holiday Services. I usually doze during the Sermon. A guest Rabbi delivered the Sermon. Traditionally the Sermon is related to the holiday; however not this time. The topic DO NOT DIE WHILE YOU ARE ALIVE. At the conclusion, I learned not to waste a day. Each day is a gift.

We are Nobles of the greatest philanthropy frater-nity existing today. Our mission is twofold, first to maintain a vehicle by which children may receive exceptional care absent of ability to pay and second to have fun, fun, incorporating the entire family.

I can’t read your mind. I implore each Noble to plant a thought where DO NOT DIE WHILE ALIVE is para-mount. Remember the only stupid idea is the one kept a secret.

Saturday, October 3, 2015, is dedicated to the Inau-gural WALK FOR LOVE. Noble Dennis G. Gold, 2015 President of Quaker City Montco Shrine Club sug-gested to the club’s membership to have a walk ben-efiting the Philadelphia Hospital. The Public Relations Department informed him that Shriners had started these walks a year ago and would be happy for his assistance. Noble Dennis embodies DO NOT DIE WHILE YOU ARE ALIVE. Kudos to Noble Dennis for a project well done.

Nobles come forward with suggestions maintaining DO NOT DIE WHILE YOU ARE ALIVE.

For the Ladies of LuLu ShrineWell, this is the last of my articles for the

FEZ. Hopefully more Ladies are now reading this newsletter and keeping up to date with the many LuLu Shrine events. That was one of my 2015 goals. Another was to provide a tour of Shriners Hospital for Children, Philadelphia which will come to fruition on October 10th.

At the writing of the September/October FEZ, I was looking forward to the Potentate’s Journey West trip. Forty-three of us boarded a bus for the airport and flew to South Dakota. We toured Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Monu-ment, Buffalo Bill Museums, Grand Tetons, Moriah Cemetery, Black Hills, Yellowstone and Old Faithful, Deadwood, and Jackson Hole. We had a guide with us the entire time and she was a walking Wikipedia!! Everyday was an adventure and our guide’s knowledge of the area was truly educational.

On our first day we found ourselves in open air jeeps among 1000 buffaloes – up close! We drifted down the Snake River on rafts, boarded an old steam engine train, attended a rodeo in Wyoming, took a gondola to the top of Rendezvous Mountain in the Tetons, and rode in covered wagons where we were “attacked” by “Indians” along the way to a chuck-wagon dinner with entertainment. Some of the men went horseback riding. And, of course, the ladies shopped whenever they could. Beau-tiful scenery, rivers, falls, and lakes! We are fortunate to live is such an incredibly mag-nificent country!

And soon the year will come to a close and Ill. Sir and I will become “past” and “former”. But we will remain active in LuLu Shrine

in 2016 and beyond. We appreciate the sup-port you all have offered throughout the year. The Divan Ladies (Joy Rocco, Gail Stein, Kim Fink, Arlene Jay) and Chief Aide’s Lady (Linda Endrick) have rolled up their sleeves (some-times literally) and pitched in at any time and for any thing.

As I was anticipating the year 2015 I had many questions and I thank my mentors, former First Ladies Sally Baird and Kate Adamson. Office Secretary Chrissy Schultz is a treasure and was very helpful throughout the year.

I hope all of you will continue to remember the story of the starfish and think of ways you can “make a difference” in both your private lives and within the Shrine family.

Well, looks like I’ll have to learn to cook again and to “make a difference” with myself by going on a diet!!

Many thanks for the wonderful memories!

Bobbie Hallowell, First Lady, LuLu Shrine

It just seems like yesterday that we were once again making plans to participate in all the activ-ities here at LuLu escorting the Potentate, after the prior year when we were told we were not wanted, well what a difference a year makes. The Mounted Guard has carried our Flag’s in every Parade or the Tem-ple Banner at Impe-rial when we were unable to obtain mounts but you heard that in my last article.

We have just gotten back from Virginia Beach in which we again took First Place in the Drill Competition, First is Parade Competition and in Individual Western Competition we scored a Second, Third and Sixth I guess all the practicing this spring and sum-mer paid off. Every third Saturday of the month as a Trail Ride followed by a Barn Party with the exception of September when Ill Sir Bill and his First Lady Mary open up their home and treat everyone to a real first class picnic on the Satur-day before Labor Day. Thanks you Bill and Mary for all you do all year.

September not only brings M.A.S.A. but also LuLu’s 27th Rodeo in which the Mounted Rides Security among other things and mingles with your guests so they can get up close and personal with our horses. It is also the kick off of our Third Annual Raffle with the drawing on Election Night in December. This is a true 50/50 so as the sales increase so do the prizes, twenty five percent to the winner, fifteen percent to second and ten per-cent for third but without your support it would not be a success.

October brings the Haunted House which is chaired by Ill Sir Gary Davis yes another mem-ber of the Mounted and the rest of our members will be there to help. With that in mind the Trail Ride which Zembo had planned to Gettysburg has been postponed to May 2016 which we will share with you as soon as we have more information.

Again this year on December 5th we will be having our Holiday Evening at Springhouse Tav-ern. Last year we had a sell out so we need your

reservations in as soon as possible so if we need more room we can

acquire it. The cost this year will be $43.00 per person but we need your reserva-tions in before Mon-

day November 23rd. Cocktails are at Seven and Dinner is at Eight with the menu of Twin Lump Crab Cakes, Prime Rib of

Beef, Chicken Parmigiana or Salmon. Reservations are

being taken by Roy L. Knauth at [email protected] 215-355-3796.

With my second job as President of International Shrine Horse Patrol our Mid Winter Meeting will be in conjunction with the East West Shrine Game in Tampa. I.N.S.H.P. has a block of room set aside and all are welcome to attend. Flyer’s are avail-able with all the information or you can contact me directly. Our Drill Master Ill Sir Bill is plan-ning on taking our own horses to Tampa Florida next year as well for Imperial.

The new program which we have been working on and I have mentioned in the last few issues of the Fez is all but done with still a few kinks to be worked out so hopefully in our next issue we will be telling you more about this idea and have flyer’s made up as well.

So as always I will finish if you have an inter-est in horses, own a horse, or have ridden before our meetings are on the fourth Tuesday of each month at LuLu Temple in the Mounted Guard Room at 7:00 , Barn Parties the third Saturday of every month at Ill Sir Bill’s farm 8:00 am ride time 12:00 clean up time. We hope to see you soon and again thanks for your support.

We would like to thank everyone who has submitted articles and photos .

I can’t believe how fast this year has gone by. It only seems like yesterday when we had the Unit and Club Installation. Since then we’ve enjoyed many other events such as the Potentates Ball, Ocean City Weekend, our Annual Picnic, Circus, and our Easter Bunny Breakfast.

I have enjoyed going to Imperial sessions with the Divan and learning so much about the Shrine. In the last four years that I have been on the Divan, I have gained much knowledge of how our Shrine func-tions, and I have been trying to implement all of these teachings to the best of my ability. I just want to say thank you to all my friends who have been helping me in getting the incoming year together.

It’s great to know that I can turn to a brother Noble for help and without hesitation he’s there. I also want to thank our newly elected Recorder and Treasurer on their new positions, thank you for doing such a great job. Here we are now in September and the rodeo has just kicked off. It is such a good feeling to be involved with everyone who comes out to work these events. By working together we do good things for our shrine.

Next is our annual Haunted House which is always a great time. I hope this function does as well as all of our others this year. And of course let’s not forget our Magic Show, what a great time! Plus, with New Year’s Eve, ringing in the New Year, we are going to have a great party. Hopefully many of you will share the joy with us.

I want to thank all the ladies who take time to participate and share in all we do. I personally want to thank all of you. Well now I’m going to get back to the drawing board, to pre-pare for the incoming year. Hopefully with God’s bless-ings and all of your help we can have a successful year for LuLu. Thank you very much and God bless all of you.

Yours in the faith. Joseph S Rocco Chief Rabban

God’s Creative GeniusAs promised let’s take a look at

the first two chapters of Genesis. These chapters hold two distinct versions of God’s creation. Both are aimed at giving us the divine answer to our utterly human ques-tion: “why is there something and not nothing?” The first story begins with a verse that all Masons are familiar with: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” This story runs through to the 11th verse of the 2nd chap-ter, where God is pictured resting on the Sabbath and God blessing everything he has made and saying

to himself: “Oh it is good, it is good, it is so very, very good.” Scholars are pretty clear that this account is the later one, historically. It is estimated that it was put together around the years 600 to 500 BC; during the great exile, in which every healthy man, women, and child were forced to live in pagan Babylon (today’s Iran) and there, coming into contact with all kinds of theories about creation that one would find in such an alien culture. So the first account is the most sophisticated and is definitely the later one of the two.

The second story begins in the middle of verse 4 of the 2nd chapter. This begins in a very different way; it is a much more primitive account. It is quainter, much more childlike and very different.

I hope to show you that whereas they are genuinely dif-ferent they are not in conflict with each other. They make the same point, though in different ways. The earlier story, the one we find in the second chapter, probably was put together around the year 1000 BC toward the end of Solo-mon’s reign or about 400 years before the first chapter.

So, ok, let’s look at the two stories and be honest about these particularities. Let’s see the way these writers are giving us the truth. However, these stories got to be put together; and they, above all else, suggest to us the nature of The Creator. They are more concerned with “why” ulti-mately than “how.”

I am going to begin at the 2nd half of the 4th verse of the 2nd chapter. This account begins exactly where the Hebrews lived their lives, namely in the desert. They were nomadic people whose habitat, that they were familiar with, was a dry desert.

In the creation story it begins with a dry empty place where there is nothing. The first thing that God does is that he comes down from His heavenly place and proceeds to

form a human shape out of this desert dust. Then, the way a life guard would resuscitate someone, in a very beautiful way God breathes life into this cluster of dust. This energy is the very mystery of what makes something alive vs what is dead. It is that breath, that spirit, that wind (the Hebrew “ruach”), that animates.

In this account we have a profound suggestion that we humans are kin to everything that is material, everything animal and at the same time, we are breathed upon by a loving, caring Creator. We have had a breath put into us, a life, a mind, and an ability to think, to transcend and to be conscious of our experiences that makes us different from rocks, trees, and even animals. So it is, this incredible stretch of diversity, all the way down to the depths of the earth and all the way to the high reaches of The Divine.

All of it is depicted in The One who has Life in Himself and wants to share, life to none called forth out of the dust of the earth. In this 2nd chapter account, God starts in the desert and then The Creator wonders how his creation may be fulfilled in a positive joyful way. It is in the heart of The Creator to give His earth creatures everything they need in order to bring them to the fullness of joy. He provides for them the most elemental physiological needs; food, drink and shelter. God realizes that we need a creative vacation; the same image that The Creator holds; that is to love, cre-ate, accomplish and give.

In other words He gives them work to do; to till and tend the land, two ancient vocations; the shepherd, and the farmer; the person who grows things and the person who cares for animals. The whole idea is that this creature will find greater fulfillment by creatively participating rather than just staying in a kind of inert position. The truth is that the happiest people I know are productive people, who are putting back into life because much has been given them and some of the emptiest people I know are folk who live only for themselves and for their own pleasures. To be creative is part of what it means to be made in the image of God.

The whole idea of this 2nd chapter of Genesis suggests that we humans are to be responsible to The One who is above us and responsible for the rest of creation that is around us and beneath us. We are not to be tyrants. We are not to be exploiters. The way a shepherd takes care of flocks and herds, or the way a farmer nurtures a crop. That is the role we are to have to all that is beneath us and we are to be obedient to The One who is above us.

Though we had planned to have a meeting in August because of the Rodeo, we had to cancel it because of most of our officers were at Virginia Beach for MASA. Things worked out ok and we had enough volunteers to man the parking lot for all four shows. I would to thank the Nobles who helped out at the gate.

Nobles Frank Flem, C. Barry Hyman, and Lady Candy Hyman, Harry Feigel, and Me. From the Mounted Guard: Illustrious Sir Roy Knauth, Nobles Dale Estus, and Ron Schumann. Illustri-ous Sir Gary Davis was all over the place as usual. Finky and Stinky did a great job running the show.

The attendance this year was phenomenal. Sat-urday night we collected money from 500 vehicles. I realize that a few of our members are in other clubs and units, but I did not even see many of you there as spectators. These events are our main fund raisers. The same people are at these events helping out all the time.

We are losing some to sickness and visits by the Black Camel. Some of our youth needs to replace them. The Haunted House is coming up in October and we could use some help in the Hillbilly Shack. So far it is Dale, Me and Uncle Nick and Lady Charmaine.

This event goes on for three weekends and any help sure would be appreciated. We have a mold

problem in the ceiling of our meeting room. I will be trying to determine the cause and remediate it next week with the help of Rich Schultz and

anyone else who would like to help.

The Christmas Party and Superbowl Party will be

here sooner than you think and we want the room ready for them.

On another note, Illustrious Sir Matt had his eyes operated on. The operation was successful. Larry Shipper has relocated to Florida. Illustrious Sir Joel Ward is out of the hospital and doing bet-ter. We hope he finally will be in better health for the long run.

I would really like to see better attendance at our meetings as the old excuses no longer apply. The meetings are orderly and sober, yet I still try to let the Nobles have fun with sometimes lively discus-sions. For at least five years certain members have been promising to get the mini cars back in work-ing order so we can use them in parades.

Hasn’t happened yet! It benefits all of us. I don’t know about you, but I am not cooking the engine on my $30,000 Harley in a parade when it is 90 degrees plus and we are stopped more often than we are moving. We will discuss this in depth at our next meetings. Thanks to all of you

LuLu’s Cabiri ReportIt is not often that you read an article in the Fez

about or from LuLu’s Cabiri. I know you see them around the Temple all the time and I know “Those Past Potentates what do they know?”. Well not much but I know seven of them you have elected to pos-sessions here at LuLu and a few more that help out at every Circus, Rodeo and haunted House.

We are now meeting on a quarterly basis and have been asked by the Potentate to lend a hand with the Ceremonials, which have been coming up short of actors to help out Noble Chris Leiser who has been carrying the entire show by himself for the last couple of years.

Ill Sir Manny Iglesias with the help of Ill Sir Gary Davis and the commitment of the entire Cabiri have volunteered to take over or at the very lease con-vince Noble Leiser that we need him to continue as Director and once again do a full Ceremonial here at LuLu.

If you have any interest in acting, moving furni-ture as a stage hand or can help with make-up you are who we are looking for. Remember what it was like, when you came in to the Shrine, well don’t we want to make it the same for every new Noble.

Spend some quality time with other Nobles intro-ducing new Nobles to our Fraternity. Call either Ill Sir Manny at 610-489-0936 of Ill Sir Gary at 215-317-0711 and step up, remember it’s your Shrine be proud of it, I am.

Roy L. Knauth P.P. Secretary LuLu Cabiri

What a GREAT rodeo we just had. It was the rodeo of GREAT things: GREAT weather, GREAT Crowds, GREAT food, GREAT money earned and most impor-tantly, GREAT people working to benefit Lulu Shri-ners. I get so proud when I see all the GREAT people that spend so much of their time and energy helping us put on such a GREAT event. There is so much work that goes on before, during and after the rodeo that we couldn’t do it without all you GREAT supporters. On behalf of Dave Caddick and my brother, Don Fink, we would like to thank everyone that had a part in our rodeo this year. Even if you did a very small job, we appreciate it.

On a more serious note, Linda Endrick, who has been the rodeo and circus secretary for almost fifteen years has decided to retire. She was a major part of both the circus and the rodeo and did so much more than just her secretarial duties. She will be hard to replace and she will be missed. We are very fortunate that Dennis Gold has stepped up to take her place. Linda has assured us that she will help Dennis with the transition. We wish Dennis and Linda luck in the upcoming year.

Please feel free to contact me to discuss any sug-gestions you may have to make our rodeo and circus even better than they already are. As a member of the divan, I am here to serve you.

Thank You From Your Rodeo Chairman

“Sightings From The Crow’s Nest”

The MAASYC Rendezvous, at Great Oak Marina in July, was attended by nine (9) LuLu Nobles and Ladies. LuLu assisted KENA Yacht Club with Hospitality on Saturday after-noon. Only one LuLu Yacht made the Rendezvous by water: “ANNAMAZING”, manned by Capt. Skip Wanner and 1st Mate Annamay.

A great Banquet was held Saturday evening.

Departing Great Oaks on Sunday, we set our Course North, to meet again at the home of P.C. Chuck and Lady Barbara Quaste. This event marked our Annual Commodore’s Pic-nic and was held on Saturday, August 15th. Here, some 28 Nobles, Ladies and Friends gathered for a fantastic picnic and a swim at this palatial estate in Richboro.

On departing the Picnic, all eyes turned to the LuLu attendees at the M.A.S.A. Con-vention in Virginia Beach, VA on September 10th-13th. On this weekend, it is expected

that our LuLu Yacht Club Com-modore, Noble Shane Couturier, will be promoted from Fleet Captain to Rear Commodore in the MAASYC Line, and we will attend a “Grand Banquet” at the Double Tree Hotel for the “Change of the Watch”.

Sympathy is extended to Lady Phyllis Biddle on the passing of husband Noble Richard Biddle on June 4th,, 2015. He was a

member of the Yacht Club for 28 years, and he served LuLu Shrine for many years as a Trustee of the Permanent Life Membership Fund.

Why not consider joining this active Club. Guess What? After you and your Lady meet the members, you may even be invited aboard one of our yachts and asked to “give a Hand!. Contact Noble Harry Speth, P.C. at (215) 682-0450, for more information and a Petition.

The History of the Shrine & LuLu (16) Chapter LXVI II (68)

The Klownz Unit, 1973 – 2015By Noble Harry Speth, Historian

Long before the Klownz Unit was organized, LuLu members donned Costumes, painted their faces and assumed funny names, all for the purpose of bringing joy and happiness to children and adults. The earliest mention of LuLu’s Clowns, is in an early black and white photograph of Nobles with Fez and several dressed as Clowns with the cap-tion: “Society Circus – LuLu Temple – Feb-ruary 13, 1909”. This photo is displayed in the Merrymac Room.

Also, prior to 1973, several Motor Unit Nobles who rode Mini Bikes, would put on make-up and entertain the chil-dren at our Philadel-phia Unit Hospital, and also at parades.

This Unit was offi-cially recognized by Ill. Sir Sanford G. Smith on March 27, 1973. Seven Nobles became the charter members: Don Stan-baugh. 1st King; Carl J. Durr (“Karl”), 2nd King; Edward Sipperly, 3rd King; Harry L. Reiter, P.P., (“Klik”) and 4th King; Norm Waldman; William Pruitt (“Harpo Mark”); and Norman Leedom.

They joined MASCA in 1975 and immediately became active. In 1982, the unit hosted the MASCA Clown-a-rama in the Oasis of LuLu Temple. Noble Carl Durr, a Charter Member, was President of MASCA that year.

Being an Active Clown is a labor of love. They bring joy and laughter to children and adults alike. The time required for make-up and costume is often

much more than the time in presenta-tion. The entire body must be covered. No skin or natural hair must show. (Clowns must wear a hat or a wig). LuLu Klownz will teach you how to be a clown. They will help select a name, your costume, how to put on make-up and how to act the part.

LuLu Klownz cur-rently average more than 70 perfor-mances per year: Circus, Rodeos, Parades, Shrine Hospital (Monthly), private parties, etc. They do not charge a Fee but will accept donations to “The Sneaker Fund”. The Sneaker Fund pro-vides soft shoes for patients in the Shrine Hospitals.

Early (about 1980), LuLu Klownz were invited to participate in Philadel-phia’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. About 1994, they were refused participation. In 1996, Noble Michael Smith (“Peddler”) (Potentate 2003) and Noble Steve Sacks (with TV Channel #6) obtained permission from the Parade Sponsor (Boscovs), to reappear in the Annual Parade. This participation has grown in recent years to 30-50 Clowns, not all LuLu members, but from several nearby Shrine Temple Klownz Units.

LuLu Klownz in Thanksgiving Day Parade 2000 .

23

The Klownz were very active in a parade when the old Shrine Hospital on Roosevelt Blvd. closed and paraded again in force (about 40) when the new Hos-pital on North Broad Street opened in 1998.

The early By-Laws of LuLu Klownz restricted the Presiding Officer (King Klown) to a one year term. By-Laws change of 2006 eliminated this restriction. Three Nobles have served as King for two years each: Doug Fink (“Finky”); Mel Myers (“Mell”) and Edward Blum (“Zounds”). Three Shrine Potentates have served as Active Clowns with LuLu’s Unit: D. Michael Smith LuLu 2003; Alvin W. Levenhagen (“Birdie”) ZEM ZEM 1970; and Charles R. Young (“Buffy”) LuLu 1996. Noble Robert Snyderman (“Shlep”) served as King in 2001 and became the Scribe (Secretary) in 2002 and continues in Office to this writing (14 years).

LuLu Klownz have competed in MASCA (Mid Atlan-tic Shrine Clown Association) and ISCA (International Shrine Clown Association) for many years and have taken numerous prizes. During the last 15 years, LuLu Klownz have taken Trophies for 1st, 2nd or 3rd Place in MASCA. Additionally, MASCA sponsors a “Freddy Award” (Remember Red Skelton) which is a Travel-ling Trophy presented each year to the Unit acquiring the most overall points at MASA Competition. LuLu has won the Award numerous times. LuLu won again this year (2015), and the Trophy is on display in the Lobby of LuLu Temple.

In order to compete, individual clowns must hold current membership in both ISCA and MASCA. LuLu Klownz have been selected as Unit of the Year several times: 1977, 1999, 2001, 2009, 2011 and 2013.

Two LuLu Klownz have succeeded through the MASCA line and served as President: Noble Carl Durr 1982 and Noble Doug Fink 2006. Noble Tom Yarnall (FUZZY”), currently serving in this line, should become President in 2018, when another Clown-a-rama will be hosted by LuLu.

For many years, LuLu Klownz have visited and entertained our children at the Philadelphia Unit on Christmas morning. What joy they bring to the “kids” and their parents on this special day. Usually 3 to 10 clowns attend and present gifts to the “kids”.

A Community Group from Essington, PA each year hosts a Yacht Stock Jamboree. Our Klownz partici-pate and the Group usually donates about $15,000 to the Philadelphia Unit, SHC.

The Unit, from the various gigs and shows, in recent

years, has been donating about $2000 each year to the Shrine Hospital System.

LuLu Klownz are happy to be guided by the all-encompassing “Prayer of a Clown” as adopted by ISCA.:

The CLOWN’S PRAYERAs I stumble through this life, help me to create

more laughter than tears, dispense more cheer than gloom, spread more cheer than despair. Never let me become so indifferent, that I will fail to see the won-ders in the eyes of a child, or the twinkle in the eyes of the aged. Never let me forget that my total effort is to cheer people, make them happy, and forget momen-tarily, all the unpleasantness in their lives. And in my final moment, may I hear You whisper “When you made My people smile, you made Me smile.”

For many years, the Daughters of the Nile (Ladies related to a Shriner) visited the Philadelphia SHC monthly to present Birthday Gifts to our Kids and the Klownz would accompany them for the entertain-ment. Most months, a Shrine Unit or Club would also attend, bringing entertainment or gifts, etc. Several years ago, the Hospital changed policy and, if pos-sible, sent our “kids” home for the weekend, so very few were available on Saturdays. Finally, only the Klownz were attending. That policy has now changed and more “Kids” are present over the weekends. The Daughters, Units and Clubs are again encouraged to join the Klownz each 3rd Saturday

The Unit currently has 32 total members, 28 of them are Active. An Active Clown is one who has a costume, a name and participates in clowning on some regular basis.

The monthly Business Meeting is held in Room #9 at LuLu on the Second Monday. If interested in becom-ing a Clown, see LuLu’s Annual Directory.

I think it’s time to brag a bit since once again Bucks County Shrine Club came in First Place at Virginia Beach for our Float. President Ray and Driver Ed made sure that our Captain Ted all made it safely to there destination with smooth waters on Atlantic Avenue and a safe return to LuLu Tem-ple. This does not mean our Boat Captain’s work is done, he is still looking for more support of those sailor’s who are interested in participating in the rest of the parades LuLu is invited too.

Membership is still our number one goal for this year and our Chairman Past President Bob Swan has been announcing new members at each one of our meetings. Let’s keep up the good work. He is is also taking orders for shirts so when we parade we can show off our color’s.

Our second Vice President Nate Cooper has made up Name Places and following the directions of Ill Sir Matt Hallowell has arranged each Divan Member to a different table so they can sit with the general Nobility and their Ladies so everyone can get to know each other. Do not miss out on the opportunity you may just learn something about LuLu and make some new friends.

Our Designer Handbag Bingo was successful in raising our contribution to Philadelphia Shriner’s Hospital. A big thank’s must go out to Nate Cooper for all his hard work in bringing this to Goal we can all be happy with.

Our First Vice President John Casanover Walk-

ing Taco’s stand for the Rodeo again was very successful but it came with a lot of help from our Nobility and their Ladies.

On Sunday November 22nd we will be holding our Annual Ladies Night once again at Twining Hall, Flyer’s are floating around at all LuLu’s Clubs or on the web site, fill it out and get it in as soon as possible or you may just miss out.

Flyers are now out from our little gray friend. Orders will be available before Thanksgiving again this year, so if you need a unique gift or just want to stock up yourself for the winter you can order your nuts by contacting his friend Ill Sir Roy L. Knauth 215-355-3796 or [email protected] and he will take you order.

Our November meetings Dinner Reservations are still being taken by our now Second Vice President Nate Cooper 267-679-9137 [email protected] who will be assisted by our new 3rd Vice President Charles Roberts but please no later than Monday morning November 2nd but preferably the Friday October 30th.

We are looking forward to seeing you at our meetings.

The Pennsylvania Antique Gun Collectors Asso-ciation will be holding their annual Fall antique gun show and sale on November 7th and 8th at the LuLu Shrine Center. The show this year will be free to Shriners showing their membership card. This is the 76th year for the Pennsylvania Antique Gun Collectors Association.

The PAGCA is dedicated to the education on, research, display, sales and trading of high qual-ity antique fire-arms, weapons and a c c ou t r e me nt s . The show brings together dealers and collectors from across the nation and presents over 100 tables of items for sale, trade and display.

Several displays will be pre-sented this year including one on the derringer manufacturers of Philadelphia and Southeast Penn-sylvania with items from virtually every manufacturer including some very rare examples. The show will also include several presentations of Pennsylvania (Kentucky) Rifles for display and sale including examples from many of the different counties in PA. This year the “Kentucky” rifle was officially named the Pennsylva-nia State rifle.

The so called “Kentucky” rifle was actually a product of mostly German craft gunsmiths in Pennsylvania. Each Pennsylvania County tends to have its own characteristics and style. Experts and Dealers in pre 1898 antique firearms will be available to help provide information on items brought in by the public.

Attendees are encouraged to bring in any antique pre 1898 items they have for evaluation and/or

possible sale as exhibitors will often offer to pur-chase items of interest.

The PAGCA Fall show is restricted to antique firearms manufactured up to 1898.

Modern firearms are not allowed to be carried or sold at the show. The show is open to the public on Saturday November 7 from 9AM to about 5PM and on Sunday November 8 from 9AM to about

2PM at the LuLu Shrine at 5140 Butler Pike, Plymouth Meeting, PA 19462 (Norristown Exit of the PA Turnpike). Admission is $7.00 for adults, Free for children up to 12 yrs old with parent and Free to Shriners showing their Shriner’s membership card.

Food and beverages are available for purchase from the LuLu Shrine kitchen. So come inspect the antique firearms and learn about some of the history of firearms manufacture in Pennsylva-nia. You will see items from all eras prior to 1898 including the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, the Civil War, and commercial periods in between up to 1898. The PAGCA show is a good time and edu-cational experience for all ages.
