The process of creating the world for the iconic story of RODGERS+HAMMERSTEIN’S CINDERELLA began with a conversation between Set Designer Anna Louizos and director Mark Brokaw. Together they reviewed images and discussed their inspiration. They decided that the fairytale world of CINDERELLA would take place in a forest, enchanted, of course.

The fabrics used to create the Ugandan villagers’ costumes are inspiredby the beautiful fabrics found in the markets of mid-Africa. Whencreating the look for the Jesus costume, designer Ann Roth addedlights to the costume so he would literally glow.

For a fresh take on PIPPIN’s troupe of Players, Tony Award

® winning Director Diane Paulus blended the acrobatic

elements of Circus with classic Fosse dance moves – the combination won the show the 2013 Tony Award

® for Best Revival of a Musical.

THE BUILDER’S NOTES

“One of the really important things to me in the design was that it remained magical and lyrical and it remained something that people, when they see it with their loved ones, are transfixed.” – Costume Designer, Ann Hould-Ward

ANYTHING GOES

As a lyricist and composer, Cole Porter remains unrivaled in his wit, cleverness, sophisticationand double entendre of lyric. The lyrics of “Anything Goes,” finished the night before the show’s out of town opening, were a satirical farce commenting on society. The show is considered the epitome of sophisticated, escapist entertainment and satire. It has been called “the definitive 1930s musical comedy.”

Wanting to pay homage and reference to the iconic 80s movie of the same name, the creators of this new musical felt the inclusion of “Unchained Melody” wasn’t a choice, but a necessity.

42nd STREET is a dazzling musical based on the 1933 Warner Brothers’ film and book of the same name. Steeped in the traditions of vaudeville and minstrel shows of the day; the story follows an ensemble of memorable characters that come to New York in search of fulfilling their dreams, amid the backdrop of the Great Depression.

MEMPHIS’ Sizzling Choreography started out as just an idea on a piece of paper. But was transformed by Original Choreographer Sergio Trujillo into an explosion of energy and eye-popping dance numbers that drew on 1950’s flair.

The Gershwin Estate approached Tony Award ® winner Joe DiPietro to

refashion the 1926 musical OH KAY! into a brand-new Broadway show. He was given free rein to choose music from the entire Gershwin catalogue, which brought to the forefront obscure Gershwin tunes like “Will You Remember Me?” and “Demon Rum.” Placing them alongside longtime favorites like “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off” and “Someone to Watch Over Me” resulted in an altogether new but entirely familiar musical comedy.

HAL HOLBROOK IN MARK TWAIN TONIGHT !

“Bim Pond, the son of Mark Twain’s lecture manager, described how Twain placed great importance on the pause. Then he said, ‘Do a solo, I think you could get bookings.’ It’s the gift he gave me, a hungry young actor looking for work.”

– Hal Holbrook

Costume Design & Illustration

by Carrie Robbins

“IRVING BERLIN’S WHITE CHRISTMAS from a costume designer’s perspective, was truly a dream job. The 50s, being a period just after WW2 & the return of the great couturiers (like Christian Dior & his New Look in 1947) meant exuberant use of glorious fabrics for gowns & shapely tailoring for ladies’ suits, all filled with lush detailing. And the men all look handsome. It’s not surprising that the early “Mad Men” look caught on so quickly...I had a great time!”

FIRST DATE

THE BUILDER’S NOTES

FIRST DATE’s Scenic and Media Designer, David Gallo, wanted to incorporate New York City specific details throughout the restaurant setting. The cityscape features prominently in both projections and the artwork on the “walls”, as do subtler references such as the Brooklyn Bridge bar table.
