Instructions for Students

Please report to school on 2 January 2019 Wednesday in BMSS school uniform or your primary school uniform by 7.20am. Proceed to assemble in the school hall for further instructions. Please bring the following items when reporting to school on Day One of School:

(1) Completed copy of Student’s Particular form (2) Annex A & B [Orientation Programme] (3) Student’s Profiling Questionnaire for Parents (4) Writing Materials (5) Story book (6) Money for recess/lunch (7) Completed set of Financial Assistance forms with attached copies of

relevant documents (if applicable)

Orientation Programme (2-5 Jan) cum 4Day 1Night CAMP (4-5 Jan 2019) All Sec One students will go through a specially designed Orientation Programme to support them in their transition from primary to secondary school on week 1 of school. The main objectives of the programme are to

1) initiate the new Sec 1s into our big Merahans’ Family 2) help them understand secondary education 3) create new friendships and bonds in their classes and as a cohort

The orientation programme will culminate with an overnight stay in the school on Friday night followed by the Sec 1 Parent-Teacher-Meeting (PTM) cum Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) Orientation on Saturday morning. As part of this programme, all parents/guardian are cordially invited to join your child/ward for a Breakfast Session on 5 Jan Saturday (8:00am). It will be a great opportunity for you to interact with the school leaders, form teachers, staff and members from the parents support group. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1 Registration matters

Is the group that I registered with today my class? Is the teacher I met today my form teacher?

The current groups are assigned according to classes. The teacher who registered you today might not be your form teacher.

Where do I go on the first day of school?

All students report to the hall for assembly. Check the notice board outside the school hall for your class allocation.

3 1st day of school

What are the school hours? Students will be dismissed at 1.30 pm on 2 Jan Wed. Refer to the Orientation Booklet that will be given on the first day of school for the remaining days.

4 1st day of school

What must I wear on the first day of school?

You should wear the BMSS uniform. However, if you are unable to purchase your uniform before the start of the school term, you will have to wear your primary school uniform. You will be allowed to wear your Primary School uniform till 5 Jan Sat.

Students are expected to be in the hall by 7.20am from Monday to Fridays.

Your parents may drop you off or pick you up at the foyer.

Is Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) compulsory in secondary school? What are the options?

CCAs are compulsory in all secondary schools. A student must have at least one CCA throughout his/her school life. It can be a CCA from Sports and Games, Clubs and Societies, Uniformed Groups or Performing Arts. The list of CCAs can be found in the Student Handbook. CCA Orientation will be on 5 Jan Saturday, to give you a better idea of what each CCA offers.

12 pm – 2 pm (both IN and OUT)

Am I allowed to bring my mobile phone to school? When am I allowed to use it?

Mobile phones are only allowed to be used before school begins, during recess and after school hours. During those periods, they can be used only in the school foyer, canteen & BMSS Heartbeat study corner.

Am I allowed to wear PE T-shirt to school if my PE lesson is in the first two periods?

You are to report to school in your school uniform and change into your P.E. attire for the P.E. lesson, regardless of which period it is. For P.E. lessons before recess or lunch, you must change back into your school uniform by recess or lunch time respectively.

What is the appropriate hairstyle and attire for a Merahan?

For girls:

White collar short-sleeved blouse

Dark blue KNEE LENGTH skirt

Black or dark blue hair accessories

Shoulder-length hair must be tied up

No dyeing of hair

Only one pair of identical ear-studs (pin-head) at the ear-lobes

For boys:

White collar short-sleeved shirt

Lower Sec: Dark blue knee length shorts

Upper Sec: Dark blue trousers (No alteration is allowed)

Hair must not touch the eye-brows, ears or the shirt collar

No perming or dyeing of hair For boys and girls:

White based shoes (at least 75% MUST be white)

ALL White socks (must be visible)

No coloured shoelaces

Can I still use my Primary School Smart Card (SSC) for concessionary travel?

You will continue to use your Primary level SSCs for concessionary travel till end April 2019. The new Secondary School SSCs will be issued in due course. You can still purchase the Bus Concession Pass (BCP) using your Primary level SSCs but you would need to purchase the BCP for Secondary School students.

How do I apply for a locker? Application of lockers ($33 for one year) will be made available on the following days:
