The mind is one of our most powerful tools for moving toward or away from God!
However, we should always be aware that our thoughts are the seeds out of which
a harvest of good or evil feelings and actions are sewn. As Proverbs 23:7 tells us,
for as he thinketh in his heart, so is he. Our thoughts identify who we are in that
they often influence, if not determine, our feelings and actions both positive and
negative.
There is truth to the concept of positive thinking in that one of the dangers to
undermining our movement upward is our thought processes. We should take
special note of our internal dialogue, the words and images with which we fill our
minds. It’s good when our inner thoughts result in spiritual, marital, or neighborly
relationships improving. In the same way, however, negative words and images
can damage or destroy relationships with God, spouse, and neighbor.
Sequichie Hifler has written in the book, A Cherokee Feast of Days:
“Numerous tangible things and acts run through our minds to delight and lure us
away from our good intentions, but none as powerful as that first thought, that
subtle invitation to give in. It is always the first step, the first word, the first taste
that leads us like the pipes of Pan. We innocently muse that we have been really
good lately, keeping our schedules, doing what we think is important. Isn’t it time
we rewarded ourselves? Why not indulge a little—just this once? These are the
first of a series of questions. Later comes the sad question—what did I do to
deserve this?”
At the same time, we are all made in the image of God and it is up to us to awaken,
nourish, and strengthen that image within us. Psalm 77:12, says, I will meditate on
all your works and consider all your mighty deeds. As we think and meditate on
the word of God and on the works of God in our lives, we are brought into
relationship with Divinity.
Thus, to meditate on, or fill our minds, with love, joy, peace patience, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, as well as compassion and
forgiveness puts us in touch with the God, which is the best thing for us and those
around us.
