    Barriers to Accessing Health Care

There is currently a parliamentary commission on Autism

and the first area of review is "Barriers to Accessing

Health Care" which is important as it follows on from the

recent paper on people dying earlier than they might have.

The Westminster Autism Commission describethemselves as an independent, cross-party group withleaders from the autism sector guiding policy and practice

    for an autism friendly world.

They need evidence - stories, good and bad examples,

and ideas on how to improve things.

They would like to hear from people with autism, familycarers, supporters, charities or anyone with a connection

    to people with autism.

    Hospitals are not Homes

The ‘Hospitals are not Homes’ booklet tells you how to getinvolved in making Transforming Care happen in yourarea, and the questions you can ask.

Transforming Care is the work that the Government isdoing to make sure that people with learning disabilitiesand / or autism don’t have to go into specialist hospitalsunless they really have to.

It also wants to make sure that people get good care andsupport that is right for them in their local area.

This work is happening because of 2 reports that lookedinto the abuse at Winterbourne View.

They were called ‘Transforming Care’ and ‘TransformingCare for People with Learning Disabilities Next Steps’.

    The campaign starts on

    18th April

The campaign will be presenting a number of stories overthat week.

    Paving the Way

“Paving the Way” is a joint project from the ChallengingBehaviour Foundation and the Council for DisabledChildren – working in partnership with families andprofessionals to share and promote good practice.

Children with learning disabilities, particularly severelearning disabilities, are much more likely to developbehaviours that challenge than other children.

Early interventions, delivered locally, can reducebehavioural problems and improve the well-being ofchildren and their families. But early intervention is farfrom a reality.

This project aims to pave the way to an ordinary life forchildren with extraordinary needs. They believe thatunderstanding the cause of challenging behaviours is thefirst step on that path.

Finding out about the Health and Care project

The Learning Disabilities Observatory has been workingon a new project. This is the Health and Care Project.

They have asked questions about the care people get.

The answers have come from GP note systems.

They have found out how well they get looked after for theillnesses they have had.

They have looked at how this compares to the care that

    people without learning disabilities get.

They are running two events to tell people with learningdisabilities what they have found out, and they would liketo hear what people think about what they have found out.

These events are for people with learning disabilities andtheir family carers.

    They take place on

    26th April in Oxford

    and

    28th April in Newcastle
