Ishaa Ishaan is an 8 year oldwhose world is filled withwonders that no one elseseems to appreciate; colors, fish, dogs, and kites are just notimportant in the world of adults,

who are much more interestedin things like homework, gradesand neatness. Ishaa just cannot seem to getanything right in class. When he gets into far moretrouble than his parents can handle, he is packedoff to a boarding school to be disciplined. Thingsare no different at his new school, and Ishaa has tocontend with the added trauma of separation fromhis family. A new art teacher infects the studentswith joy and optimism and breaks all the rules of how things are done by asking them to think, dream and imagine. All the children respond with

enthusiasm except Ishaa. The teacher soonrealizes that Ishaa is unhappy and sets out todiscover why. With time, patience and care, heultimately helps Ishaa find himself.

HOLY LAND JOURNAL

Observations from the land of Jesus, the Gospel of the land and people,by Dr. Jackie Stewart

Once anyone visits the Holy Land they can never

read/hear the Scriptures the same way again. Thereadings for this Sunday and for the Feast of theImmaculate Conception on Monday bring a numberof images to mind from my journeys there this year.

In the Church of St. Catherine’s in Bethlehem there isa bronze relief entitled, “The Root of Jesse” thatdepicts the calling of David the shepherd to bechosen and anointed King by the prophet Samuel.

The first reading for this Sunday references thespringing forth of a shoot from this stump of Jesse.

The prophet Isaiah goes on to say, “The baby shallplay by the cobra’s den, and the child lay his hand onthe adder’s lair. There shall be no harm or ruin on allmy holy mountain....” I am often asked, “Is it safe totravel in the Holy Land?” This past October, while Iwas at the traditional baptismal site on the Jordanian border, where John the Baptist preached and called

people to a baptism of repentance (Gospel), I met anIsraeli soldier who was on guard at the site. He wasone of the very few soldiers I saw on this journey, themajority may have been up on the borders with Syriaand Lebanon. I asked him if I could have a phototaken of us, to which he happily agreed, though I wascareful to keep my arms away from any weaponry hewas carrying. It is amusing to see me wearing anArab “Rashid Tours” hat in the company of a smilingyoung Jewish Israeli soldier (you have to hide these

hats when going through Israeli airport security). Icould not help but think of the Isaiahan passage, andexpressed hope for peace, which he echoed.

In Nazareth there is a grotto in the lower level of theBasilica of the Annunciation, which is revered as the

home of Mary and the site of the annunciation of theangel Gabriel to Mary. The stone on the front of thealtar reads, “Verbum Caro, Hic Factum Est”—

“Here, The Word became flesh.” Not somewhereelse, but here! — God became human in a little backwater town in Galilee. Come and see....

Shalom, salaam, peace and all Good!

Second Sunday of Advent A

Reading I: Isaiah 11:1-10

Responsorial Psalm 72:1-2, 7-8, 12-13, 17

Reading II: Romans 15:4-9

Gospel: Matthew 3:1-12

Prepare the Way

Rummage around your memory. What thingshave made you grateful? Can’t think of any?Concentrate.

Russet colors interwoven in the sunset. A womanquiet in the hospital, lovely, waiting calmly fortomorrow’s verdict. Peacefully.

Unthinking courtesy from strangers who stopped

their car down the street so you could completeyour jaywalk in safety! The family. The dog. Yourown life, which is a wonder and a mystery evenwith all its losses and tangles. Wise trees that shedtheir leaves, , knowing about the snow and cold tocome.

The ability to see, if indeed you can do so. Holydarkness if you cannot.

All gifts. All from God. All worthy of gratitude.Once any of us get a peek at how much God isgiving, the remainder follows seamlessly.Example. A woman named Katharine Lee Batestraveled to the top of Pike’s Peak in Colorado andthen, astonished, her heart took in the spaciousskies and amber waves of grain, the purplemountains’ majesty. She wrote out her gratitude ina little song called “America the Beautiful.” Thevery full container of her thanks.

You and I do very little to “deserve” the mysteriousgoodness around us and in us. In fact, we

definitely have not earned it. God gives it all out of pure generosity and love. God gazes in wonder atthe world and each person in it, and says, “You areworth it. I am glad you are here.”

The smallness of my own self makes me each doubtsuch a statement from God. I am not the center of the universe. I do not control everything aroundme. I don’t have to. I can rest in God’s arms andthen do as well as I can to live well and help others.

Spirituality of the Readings Smallness is gift.

Perhaps such a gift is not tendered to you at thismoment. Perhaps life simply has too manyproblems, problems, problems. Maybe gift is there, but you cannot see them.

In that case, your Advent eyes will have to restfrom their weariness for a while and wait. God’sdelicate care is there for you and for us all. Youwill see before long.

See what? A shoot sprouting from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud blossoming. Thespirit of the Lord resting upon him: a spirit ofwisdom and of understanding, a spirit of counseland of strength (cf. First Reading).

“He shall judge the poor with justice, and decidearight for the land's afflicted” (First Reading). TheGod who takes joy in small things does defend uspoor ones from the wrongs of life. But he does noterase trouble, he loves us within it.

Advent is about glimpsing God’s intimate love forevery hair on our head. Patience. Such good newsis worth waiting for.

With all the catastrophes in our world, how couldany of this be possible? Just you wait. Clean your

lenses. Open your eyes. Wait to see. Julian ofNorwich put it this way:

All shall be well, and all shall be well, and every manner of thing shall be well.

The shoot of Jesse is sprouting.Fr. John Foley, S. J.

The Damietta Project

Catholics and Musliims working together forthe common good,by Dr. Jackie Stewart

Our interfaith group grew outof the recently completed JustMatters study module “In theSpirit of St. Francis and theSultan” that began last Fall. The group’s oversight isprovided by Fr. GenePistacchio, ofm, and Dr. JackieStewart of St. Anthony Shrine Just Matters Group andHNP JPIC partners in Peace and Social Justice, and byDr. Ertugrul Cansizoglu and his wife Esra Cansizogluof Peace Islands Institute & the Turkish CulturalCenter.

Vision StatementWe are a group of Catholics andMuslims inspired by the historic13th century meeting of St. Francisof Assisi and Sultan Malik al-Kamilon the battlefield of Damietta,Egypt. Amid a climate of distrustand violent hostility these two greatfigures from our faith traditionsworked with respect towards oneanother to attain peace and understanding. In thatsame spirit, we come together in our present-day

climate of fear and prejudice to answer God’s call, present in both our faiths, to care for God’s creationand God’s people. We are devoted to the promotionof the well-being of all, guided by our traditions’commitment to justice and compassion.Through our projects we aspire to work togetherfor the salaam of the reign of God.

Modus OperandiOur core team coming out of our study groupconsists of ~seven Catholics and seven Muslimswhich meets monthly. On even months we havea planning session at St. Anthony Shrine or atPeace Islands Institute or Turkish CulturalCenter, on odd months—apotluck supper hosted at oneof our members’ homes. Overthe course of a year beingtogether, we have fostered and become an interfaith family.

We have offered three eventsthis Fall that have been open tothe larger community:

• “In the Footprints of Francis and the Sultan” A Model forPeacemaking on Thurs., Sept. 19 at St. Anthony Shrine• “Frugal Cooking: How to be More Efficient in theKitchen” , Presented by Sezar Yavuz, Professional Cook,Sat., Oct. 19 at Turkish Cultural Center Boston

• “How to Reduce Your Residential CarbonFootprint” presented by Prof. Michael Gevelber,BU, on Wed., Nov. 6 at Peace Islands Institute.

Our most recent gathering was on Sun., Nov. 24 —

a “pre-Thanksgiving” New England-styleThanksgiving dinner, hosted at the author’s homeon a very cold night. Our Muslim counterparts

had never had a traditional turkeyThanksgiving so we decided thatwould be our November potluckevent. The turkey and all otheraccompaniments need to be halal(permitted under Islamicpractice), so that meant goingkosher. I consulted with my Jewishfriend Phyllis, who is a high-end

caterer, about sources for theproper ingredients for this holiday

meal. She directed me to Trader Joe’sThey were expecting a shipment of kosherturkeys so I spoke with the managerthere. He asked, “have you ever cookeda kosher turkey?” “Why?” “Becausethere will be some feathers...” Oh, joy

The turkey ended up beingthe best ever — fresh, corn-fed, not enclosed in cages, etc., and blessed by the

rabbi in processing. What’snot to like? Sue made appleand pumpkin pies withwhipped cream (halal ofcourse); Esra made a sweetTurkish soupy dessert;there was stuffing, corn, mashed potatoes, sweetpotatoes, gravy, green beans, brussels sprouts, pearl onions, cranberrysauce, and Turkish salad,

pomegranate juice andapple cider—a feast allvery colorful and

delicious. Most importantly, the blessing over thefood led by Fr. Gene, the comraderie and gatheringaround the blazing fireside, eating, exchanging storiesand enjoying friendship. We were thirteen adults andone Muslim baby named Busra, which means “GoodNews”—she is our Gospel baby. We missed Enes andDilar who moved to Austin last week, and Sofiya fromTurkmeristan who will join us soon, as well as Wil,who was at home caring for sick baby Anna.
