    Reading I: Isaiah 7:10-14

    Responsorial Psalm 24:1-2, 3-4, 5-6

    Reading II: Romans 1:1-7

    Gospel: Matthew 1:18-24

    An Inner Assurance

A dream changed Josephs life and ours. A meredream, like what you and I have most every night.

Everyone could see that Josephs fianc was in afamily way. USA culture might applaud this fact,as it does when movie stars have children withwhomever they feel like as often as they feel like it.But in Biblical culture marriage was a sacred act, aparticipation in Gods own fidelity, and it seemedthat, as far as the townspeople could see, Mary hadbroken with that fidelity. The Blessed Mother apublic sinner! No wonder Joseph was makingarrangements for a quiet divorce.

How could a plain old dream change this? InSundays Gospel, a dreamed-up angel tells Josephthat Marys pregnancy is from the Holy Spirit ofGod. Mary had accepted this fact readily butwithout really understanding. Joseph should notbe afraid of the pregnancy, he was told, even

though he had not yet even married this woman!

So why in the world would he reverse himself andtrust a vision from his sleep? Do you trust dreams?A friend of mine had one about a kangaroo whichwas sitting on the roof in a rocking chair smokinga pipe! Should my friend check the rooftop forcozy rocking chairs and ash trays, just in case? Noof course not. We take a dream for what it is, amechanism of our psyche that somehow processesour experience but does not give us literal truth. We do not rely on them for life-changing messages.

    Why did Joseph?

I think the answer has to do with something St.Ignatius of Loyola calls discernment.

In general, discernment is an examination of onesinternal reactions (movements of spirit),especially in prayer. There are many different

Spirituality of the Readings movements, of course, but there is one that maydescribe Josephs dream. Sometimes, rarely, graceis so gently strong that the person praying has aninner assurance that the experience did not comefrom imagination at all, but from God. Somehowthis grace turns out to be impossible to doubt.

You and I have to be careful not to get carried away

by such a notion. Probably many of us couldconvince ourselves that God or an angel spoke tous this morning. We need to discern whichexperiences are from God and which are not. Arethey quiet? Do they lead toward God or away? What is the long-term result? A spiritual directorcould help us sort through such questions.

That said, I think Josephs dream might have beena movement of this kind. It containedinstead ofa kangarooa quiet certaintyof the presence of God. No

doubts followed it, thoughthey would surely haveseemed warranted. Josephsdream was like the face ofmother to a child. It was likethe voice of a close friend.

Joseph was a good man. Healready had a storehouse oftrust in Gods love. He didnot experience this treasury asbroken into, shattered, or

pulled to pieces by the dream.Instead the message fit rightinto the design of Josephs lifewith God. And so hefollowed.

What is your own internalsense of Marys pregnancy? Isthe birth of God an impossibletale reserved for children? Ordo you find the roots of trustwithin yourself as Joseph did?

    Decide soon! Christmas is coming.

Nativity of the Lord (Christmas) A

    Vigil Mass (December 24)

    Mass at Midnight

    Mass at Dawn

    Mass During the Day

    Giving and Receivingl

Have you ever worried about the gifts you give forChristmas? Well, not the gifts themselves butwhether they will please the ones who receivethem?

For instance, what if the giftee forces a courtesysmile and says, Oh it is just what I wanted, or

something similar? What if,later in the year, by accident,

waiting for the person toanswer their door which youhave just knocked on, youglimpse the family rushing tobring your last years gift upfrom the basement and hang itup in the living room?

So I used to keep second-guessing myself on every giftI shopped for. Look there, Iwould say, that is the perfect

gift for this person, just right! But wait a minute, they donthave a fireplace mantle to sit iton. Or, will it go with theirdcor? Or does he or she evenlike that kind of thing. MaybeI will look like a fool. Or, or,or, or.

    Or.

    Thats normal, isnt it?Normal agonizing.

A great friend of mine from South Africa helpedme out with this dilemma. Kolile was his name(Ko-le-leh, but pronounced with a click instead ofthe K*) and he told me, You are trying to dosomeone elses job. Do your own. Your task is togive the gift. Let them take care of receiving it.

    Spirituality of the Readings

He gave two examples. In Africa the women at theparish work for many days preparing a feast. Allthe food is beautiful, tasty, and set out perfectly. At last the day arrives, the doors open, andminutes later the whole presentation looks likeplowed earththe food picked over, the peoplehappy but oblivious. This does not bother the

women, he said. It is up to the people to receive itin whatever way seems right. The womens part ofthe exchange is to make the gift ready, and theylove doing it.

Then he said, in his gruff but gracious way, that inhis part of Africa it is the custom to bring a presentto the person you are visiting. He and otherswalked the long journey to visit his father, whohappened to love roast beef. Kolile brought alonga big chunk of roast and put it on the table whenthey got there. His father said, no, thank you, I do

    not like that any more.

Kolile was not bothered. I did my part, he said, and my father did his. All was well.

So I began to choose gifts that just felt right for eachperson on my Christmas list. I did not worry andworry whether it would please them, I let theperson fill my mind and when I saw somethingthat matched my sense of them, I bought it.Without worry. Every gift did actually delight theone who received it, but that isnt the point. My job

was to open my heart and give. I let them take careof receiving it.

Maybe this is what God does at Christmas. Somany people do say No thanks to the Christchild. But the Christmas babe is not born in orderto get accepted. He is the spilling over of Godsimmense love for us. When God lets each of usinto his mind, he senses that the baby Jesus is theperfect gift.

Merry Christmas!________* Kolile kept making me pronounce his name correctly. Iasked, why do I have to insert the click on the first syllablewhen everybody else just says 'ko'? Because you can, hesaid. God rest his soul.
