FORT DETRICK HOLY FAMILY CATHOLIC COMMUNITY THE SOLEMNITY OF November 23, 2014 OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE - A Embodied Love The Gospel reading for this week is very rich. It invites us to reflect on the difference between true love and its false imitation, between real Christianity and its fake lookalike. It encourages us to exercise ourselves in the care of all God’s children. It prompts us to reflect on all the different kinds of hunger there are in the world, and the very different kinds of feeding those various hungers require. These are all good things to ponder, but there is still more to see. Here is one more thing. Think about what it is for God himself to be incarnate. A human woman took the Lord to her breast and suckled him there. The apostle John reclined by the Lord and laid his head on the bosom of the Lord. A woman washed the Lord’s feet wi th her tears, and a woman rubbed his feet with lotion. How did those people get so lucky? Of all the millions and millions of God’s people, how can it be that so few touched God in the flesh, that only one woman anointed his feet? Wouldn’t you have liked to be among these very lucky people? It is good to have a God who enters human history, but anything in history is local, constrained in time and space, cut off from so many things that aren’t right here, right now. How can it be that only those few people, who were there then with Jesus, had access to the Lord flesh to flesh? In desperately sad and stricken moments, what wouldn’t you yourself have given to lay your weary head on the breast of your Lord? The answer to these questions and the consolation the questions seek is in the Gospel reading: whatever you did to one of the least of my own, the Lord says, you did it to me. November 23, 2014 – OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE - A

Embodied Love

The Gospel reading for this week is very rich. A woman washed the Lord’s feet with her tears, and a woman rubbed his feet with lotion. How did those people get so lucky? Of all the millions and millions of God’s people, how can it be

that so few touched God in the flesh, that only one woman anointed his feet? Wouldn’t you have liked to be among these very lucky people? It is good to have a God who enters human history, but anything in history is local, constrained in time and space, cut off from so many things that aren’t right here, right now. How can it be that only those few people, who were there then with Jesus, had access to the Lord flesh to flesh? In desperately sad and stricken moments, what wouldn’t you yourself have given to lay your weary head on the breast of your Lord? The answer to these questions and the consolation the questions seek is in the Gospel reading: whatever you did to one of the least of my own, the Lord says, you did it to me.

I AM GLAD YOU ASKED!

(Send all your questions to: [email protected] )

Q. Questions for your reflection on today’s readings:

First Reading

Ezekiel 34:11-12, 15-17

1. “As a shepherd tends his flock when he finds himself among his scattered sheep, so will I tend my

sheep.” How does Pope Francis’ statement below relate to this line from the First Reading? How does his

statement relate to you?

An evangelizing community gets involved by word and deed in people’s daily lives; it bridges distances,

it is willing to abase itself if necessary, and it embraces human life, touching the suffering flesh of Christ

in others. Evangelizers thus take on the “smell of the sheep” and the sheep are willing to hear their voice.

Evangelii Gaudium, 24

2. According to this reading, what type of shepherd is the Lord God? If there is a message in this reading

for people in Church leadership positions, what is it? What can you do to “bind up the injured and heal the

sick”?

Second Reading

1 Corinthians 15:20-26, 28

1.“For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is

death.” Name some signs of “death or serious illness” that you see in the world, the environment or in the

Church today. What can you do to restore life? How can you help Christ accomplish the task of

destroying death?

2. How can you help Christ challenge the many forms of violence in the world today?

Gospel

Matthew 25:31-46

1. This king is the almighty and glorious God. Why did he come into the world in solidarity with the poor,

wear thorns for his crown, and have a cross for his throne? Who can relate on a personal level to a very

rich, brilliant leader? Who can relate to a poor and suffering one?

2. “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink.” Christ uses our

generosity as a criterion for salvation. How is also a criterion for happiness? What happens to you when

you give? The “sheep” didn’t recognize or accept the message or the messenger (Jesus), but they gave

anyway. If the “goats” had recognized Jesus, they would have given too. How important is it to give

without calculation?

PRAY WITH THE SAINTS

--We ought to speak, shout out against injustices, with confidence and without fear. We proclaim the principles of the Church, the reign of love, without forgetting that it is also a reign of justice. ---I believe, O Lord, but strengthen my faith... Heart of Jesus, I love Thee; but increase my love. Heart of Jesus, I trust in Thee; but give greater vigor to my confidence. Heart of Jesus, I give my heart to Thee; but so enclose it in Thee that it may never be separated from Thee. Heart of Jesus, I am all Thine; but take care of my promise so that I may be able to put it in practice even unto the complete sacrifice of my life. --Long live Christ the King ....last words before being martyred by firing squad

International Military Pilgrimage to Lourdes

Very soon, the Archbishop will send you a letter about the International Military

Pilgrimage (PMI) to Lourdes, to encourage your support and participation, which will

also published on the special website for the same pilgrimage.

However, he does wish to avoid any confusion about this pilgrimage sponsored only by

the AMS and the Knights of Columbus. Should you receive any request to solicit

volunteers, funds, or priests on the part of the North American Lourdes Volunteers

(NALV), please refuse to do so and inform the Archbishop immediately of the request.

This group has repeatedly failed to co-operate with the AMS, has embarrassed the

image of the United States among the organizers of the PMI, and, in general, has

persisted in employing and sponsoring one model of Lourdes visit—theirs.

Last year, the Archbishop did obtain a grant for the NALV to help the AMS bring

wounded warriors on the pilgrimage. The collaboration was non-existent, and he has

been forced to abandon any similar attempts in the future. The Knights have been able

to draw on the long experience of the Knights of Malta, in addition to the “trial run” last

year. They are already far along in their preparations for this year’s PMI.
