25 MAY 2014 6TH SUNDAY OF EASTER

To be a Christ-centred family that loves and

serves one another with joy and humility

Discipleship In the New Testament, disciples are learners or pupils. But, more importantly, they have a very personal relationship with the master - a relationship that shapes their whole life. There is no doubt about who has the formative power. It is always the master. With Jesus, discipleship is permanent, not transitory. The disciples do not become equal to the master or surpass him. Discipleship is the fulfilment of their destiny. The disciples have a relationship to the person of Jesus. They are not simply people who hand on the body of Jesus teaching. They never outgrow their need to follow Jesus because they are always in the process of being formed by him. They become attached to Jesus to such an extent that they share his vision of life and ministry. There are no hierarchic degrees of disciples. One Christian is not more disciple than another. Discipleship is a process of becoming. Ignatius of Antioch, on his way to martyrdom in Rome, hopes he can become a disciple: "Now I am beginning to be a disciple...Howbeit through their wrongdoings (of his guards) I become one completely a disciple...Then shall I be truly a disciple of Jesus Christ, when the world shall not so much see my body."

EVANGELII GAUDIUM

The Joy of the Gospel

- Pope Francis -

#21

The Gospel joy which enlivens the community of disciples is a missionary joy. The seventy-two disciples felt it as they returned from their mission (cf Lk 10:17). Jesus felt it when he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and praised the Father for revealing himself to the poor and the little ones (cf Lk 10:21). It was felt by the first converts who marvelled to hear the apostles preaching “in the native language of each” (Acts 2:6) on the day of Pentecost. This joy is a sign that the Gospel has been proclaimed and is bearing fruit.

“The Rosary is a prayer both so humble and simple and theologically rich in Biblical content. I beg you to pray it. How beautiful is the family that recites the Rosary every evening!”

- Saint John Paul II -

I invite you to listen to and follow Jesus, and to allow yourselves to be transformed interiorly by His

words, which “are spirit and life” (Jn 6:62)

Mary, the Mother of Jesus and ours, also says to us: “Do whatever He tells you” (Jn 2:5). It will help

you to participate in a communal journey that is able to release the best energies in you and around

you.

Let us dispose our hearts therefore to being “good soil”, by listening, receiving and living out the

Word, and thus bearing fruit. The more we unite ourselves to Jesus through prayer, Sacred Scripture,

the Eucharist, the Sacraments celebrated and lived in the Church and in fraternity, the more there will

grow in us the joy of cooperating with God in the service of the Kingdom of mercy and truth, of justice

and peace.
