The fence painting was a mammoth task as the front fence comprised 30 metres of picket fence, whichneeded painting on both sides plus 30 metres of paling fence 2 metres which required painting on oneside. This consumed almost 30 litres of paint. A number of repairs were performed on the fence by Peter who prepared with his tool box and trusteeDEWALT drill and screwdriver. Work started at 8.30am and the Melbourne Park team commenced the garden maintenance and workedvery hard to finish this around 12pm when they then joined the painting team to finish half an hour overthe estimated time. Morning tea, as always, was provided by Rose the cook at McAuley House and her fresh scones, jam andcream were to die for.

INVIGORATING VOCATIONAL SERVICEPosted by Tony Thomas
"To hold the good of the organisation’s past in reverence, as it climbs to higherusefulness in the future."Paul Harris
An invigoration of District’s Vocational Service is under way. The goal is to switch Vocational Service to a support role for other service lines during thenext three years. Currently it’s a little-understood and often neglected stand-alone activityin Rotary. “Many Vocational chairs in clubs struggle to define their role,” says Justine Murphy, District 9800 Vocational Director. “If a club has a program to teach kids skills at interviews, is that‘Vocational’ or ‘Youth’? If a club is helping migrants get a start here, is that ‘Vocational’ or‘International’? Every Rotary club in the world suffers from this confusion. “In fact, Vocational Service is implicit in everything we do – it’s less what we do, than howwe do it. It’s about how we deploy our vocational skills like project management orbusiness counseling. We want Vocational Service to be a support to club, cluster and Districtprojects, not an activity in itself. “The reality is that Rotary started as a vocational network for business and occupationalskill and ethics, and those aspects are our unique strength among community organisations.Too many people just associate Rotary with sausage sizzles.” The new eight-person, skills based, Vocational Service team is a diverse group, reflectingthe breadth of Rotary experience, age and gender.

The Vocational Service makeover addresses:
Vocational programs' overlap with other avenuesMany clubs don’t take Vocational Service seriously, allocating it to less-activemembersMost clubs see Vocational Service as little more than a few job talks and site visits
Justine says, “Our District plan is now for Vocational Service to be the common threadacross all other service programs, with a focus to support them” How will this happen? District will provide support to clubs – building on the vocational skills, experience andnetworks of the District.
Its Vocational ‘Skillsbank’ is in development, with a current list of about 170 skillswhich will be used to match required skills with projects. The District will compile a database of clubs’ Vocational projects – but based on whatis being done, not which avenue the project is sitting inA new “Vocations in Service” mark will be developed, to be applied to a host ofprograms in all avenues across the DistrictAnnual District Vocational Awards for great programs from any avenue that arevocationally based, ethically sound and well governed.Annual ’thought leadership’ events will be run as open community forums – the first tobe in October 2015
Members of the committee are:Narina Amvasas, RC Southbank; Alan Seale RC Central Melbourne Sunrise; RebeccaHeitbaum, RC Albert Park; Philip Rowell (EO) RC Brighton North; Anne King, RC Central Melbourne Sunrise; Justine Murphy (Chair) ;Mandi Wendt , RCMelbourne Park; and Bob Slater, RC Carlton.

Guest Speaker -- Russell RollsRussell commenced by letting us know his talk would be wider than the title:"Victoria’s energy opportunity" since he would cover power and powergeneration. He gave us an information packed one-hour seminar in 15 minutes, wow Russell!
Victoria has one of the largest undeveloped deposits of lignite (brown coal) in the world (430billion tons of lignite, about 30- 35 b of those are economic, so many hundreds of years atpresent usage rate). It is comparatively low in toxic pollutants There is also significantevidence to suggest that there is the possibility to develop a large-scale coal seam gas(CSG) industry utilising the deeper, un-mineable lignite seams. The challenge for Victoria isto identify and commercialise the technologies that will allow these resource developmentsto proceed. Victoria is dependent on Latrobe valley for about 95% of stationary energy(which covers most things excluding transport). Vic does not export natural gas currently, but only 20-30 years of gas left, while crude oil inBass Strait is dropping off dramatically. Can CSG fill that gap? Many CSG wells may only last20 -30 years. Russell indicated it is likely to be able to develop low emissions technology, that converts lignite to oil and black coal. Are we close to peak oil? How will we power our cars? Maybe hydrogen (H), then source ofH is likely to be coal. Base load: Peaks used to be winter mornings, now it is summer in the afternoon. Stationarygeneration from coal boilers does not cope with those short lived but intense peaks; gas isbetter for peak load. Russell gave us a primer on the Carboniferous period and underground methane locations, and a passionate primer on the idiosyncrasies of ownership laws in relation to developmentissues. He also gave us a rundown on some of the Vic politics, and the not-so-evidencebased discussions that abound in Victoria. In Russell's opinion, degradation of farm soils is also a big problem that does not get enoughconsideration. Questions surrounded uses of brown coal, including export potential, but since Vic brown

coal is 65% water, it is not good for export, and combustion is a problem. President Roy closed the meeting inviting all to "LIGHT UP ROTARY"(I am tempted to ask: with CSG?)
