Dear Parents,

World Day of Migrants and Refugees was marked around the Christian World on last Sunday. Pope Francis message for that day urges us: Do not tire of courageously living the Gospel which calls you to recognize and welcome the Lord Jesus among the smallest and most vulnerable.

We give thanks for our safe lives in what appears to be a less vulnerable part of the globe. At the same time, we know that the policies of our country leave many vulnerable refugees among the rejected of the world. It is surely true that the only way that can change is for ordinary Australians to let their voice be loud in recognizing our failure. How thankful those from war torn countries would feel if their children could inhabit a world such as our school where the fun and challenge of their education can be realized each day.

Term 3 brings us right into some peak moments on the field, on the stage, and in the fun of the Primary Book Week parade displayed here in photographic form. Not all the highlights can be pictured here and those that are not are nevertheless talked about in your homes, especially after last Saturday’s Sports play offs. We bring our front page focus to:

1. The great achievement of the Year 12 Drama Production Ruby Moon. The grim story was made more compelling by our memories real life stories of missing children in Australia. Congratulations to Director Ms Victoria Sayner, cast and crew for an unforgettable performance.

2. Book Week had its own special happenings. Perhaps the most colourful and engaging was the Book characters Parade held in the Gym last Wednesday. Once in costume children do “Escape to Everywhere.” To parents and staff, thanks for your guidance in opening up the world of the story.

3. Sporting Victories were quite numerous as the winter season came to an end. We congratulate every student who has made regular sports team participation part of their week. Below are two of the premiership teams. They are firstly, the State Wide Knock Out Champions in Open Girls Badminton 2017 and secondly the Soccer B Grade Premiers for 2017. Congratulations!

Parent EngagementThe Year 2 Class would like to thank Nathalie Randeniya’s mum, Shreeni for coming in and cooking some delicious Sri Lankan dishes with them. We appreciate Shreeni sharing her time and talent with us.

Grandparent Engagement: The lucky Year 1s had a very special visitor in their classroom last week. Nonna Rose a professional hairdresser gave us a demonstration of how to cut hair. Her model was her very own granddaughter Aria. We are now aware of split ends,

cutting hair when it is wet and that it’s very important to sit still or your “do” may become a “don’t!” We loved collecting Aria’s hair. We have been made aware that cutting hair should not be done at home or in our Kool Kreations Hair Studio. However, if you’d like a fancy up “do” visit Kool Kreations in the J.P Activity Room but bookings are essential. Thank you for displaying your skills Nonna Rose. We hope we didn’t tire you out too much and that is a why you’re having a break in Bali!

Primary News from Ms. Cate O’Leary Primary School Coordinator

Year 3 have certainly been busy the first half of Term 3. Here’s a peek:Every Wednesday we went to Foosteps Dance. We had two different people teaching us lots of dances. My favourite one is to We Will Rock You. I liked the chorus and the cool actions. MorganWe interviewed a Resident from Helping Hand about their life and what they did when they were younger. I liked doing the interview because it was nice to talk to someone who might not get very many visitors. SophieIn Health we have learnt about food and kept a Food Diary. We drew a food wheel in our book and learnt how much sugar is in some of the drinks we like. I also learnt that fruit has its own natural sugar. ZuhuurThe Assembly Year 3s hosted was fun because I like talking in front of people. I like doing something altogether with our class, like saying the alphabet in Italian and hosting it all together. MontanaI enjoyed the story that Deb Abela told us from when she was a child about jumping off the roof and bumping her chin. What she told us was really interesting and made me want to listen to all her stories and read her books. Eve

BOOK WEEK: Author in ResidenceOn Monday 14th August Deb Abela entertained us with colourful storytelling, book presentations and an inspiring Creative Writing workshop with Year 6 girls.

BOOK WEEK: Dress-up ParadeIt was very exciting to see lots of different people’s costumes. It made me wonder what characters they were. Magdalene Yr 3I really liked dressing up. I loved everyone’s costumes. They were really colourful. I think kids made a big effort into making them. Hannah Yr 3The costume ideas were creative. People put a lot of thought into their costumes. Stage 1 Religion Making big change with little changeStudents in Stage 1 Religion researched a faith based organisation in groups. Along with raising awareness, many felt inspired to run small fundraisers to show their support and make a donation. The girls did not expect a ‘thank you’, but it is lovely that one organisation took the time to write in to us.

Muriel Noujaim, Deputy Principal (Student Wellbeing)

Write a book in a dayOn Wednesday 23 August, a group of ten Year 8s participated in a writing competition to write a book for hospitalised children. Before this day, we had to fundraise $270 for children’s cancer research. Through events such as a Cake Stall and a Book Swap, we raised $330, $60 over target!

On the writing day, we were given 12 hours to collectively write a short story including parameters that were provided on the day. No planning or writing was to be done prior to 8am or after 8pm on the day. Our parameters meant that we had to include a garbage man, an acrobat, and an ostrich as our main characters. The setting was a train station and the issue was ‘sharing a room’. Submitted books will be judged, and the winning entry will be given to children in hospital to read! This is a truly rewarding event to be a part of and we all hope that we can change the lives of hospitalised children, through the powerful message of words.

French Exchange StudentHello, it is me Lise-Hélène RABIET.

I have the incredible chance to be an exchange student here, in Adelaide, Australia, for 10 months. I am grateful to Southern Cross Cultural Exchange, St Dominic’s Priory School and my lovely host-family who are kindly hosting me.

I am a 17 year-old-girl from a town named Sucy-en-Brie located 15km from the center of Paris. I really love my country because of its food and history which spans a thousand years. I also enjoy travelling around Europe, watching movies and TV shows, cooking, sharing and spending time with my family and friends.

I chose your country, Australia because of the generosity, the kindness and the devotion of your people and the beauty of your landscape and cities. I am now here to discover your way of life, your culture and your traditions. To be honest, I didn’t come here from France to Australia for your food because I hate Vegemite! In fact, I think it is the worst thing I have ever tasted!

During my journey, I hope to meet new people and create friendship links with them. I will also do my best to improve my English, both spoken & written.

I cannot wait to share with you my culture and the part of France I brought with me!

Year 11 ItalianLast Friday, as part of their Italian investigation on Il Made in Italy products, the Year 11 Italian class participated in a tasting tour of Italian imported products at Imma and Mario’s “Il Mercato”. To begin with, the class enjoyed an Italian flavoured lunch followed by an informative and mouth-watering tour by our Italian guide, Barbara. The girls learnt about the origins of many food products, including Il Mulino Bianco and Il Parma Prosciutto. Everyone enjoyed the visit, all wanting to return soon. A warm thank you to the staff at Il Mercato for their hospitality and making our experience an enjoyable one. Toni Riccio, Year 11 Italian Teacher

Harry Bell Memorial Art CompetitionOctober 31, 2017 is the 100th Anniversary of the Light Horse charge which took place at Beersheba in Palestine. The Harry Bell Memorial Art Competition, which took place between April 1 and June 30 and was open to Years 9-10 students who were Australian, New Zealand or Israeli citizens living in Australia, encouraged students to study this lesser-known part of WW1 history and visually portray the ANZAC characteristics of mateship, courage, perseverance and sacrifice displayed by the Light Horsemen with special reference to the interaction of horses and riders.

We congratulate Sarah Runnegar-Mullins (9G) who was awarded 2nd place with her piece, ‘Recollections of Companionship’ and Thuyen (Anna) Ngo (9G), who as an international student was ineligible for a prize, was instead awarded a Special Commendation for ‘Good Luck Mate’.

The first prize winner was unable to partake in the trip, so I will be travelling around Israel in early November for about a week! I travelled to Melbourne on August 18th to attend the prize winning ceremony, we also toured Melbourne Parliament House and saw my work on display at Caulfield Racecourse on August 19th. It was a great experience and I am really looking forward to going to Israel to visit the ANZAC battlefields. - Sarah Runnegar-Mullins

Although I am not eligible for the prizes, I decided to enter the competition. One of the judges, Jennifer Marshall, decided that my work deserved a special commendation and she is donating me one of the limited editions print of her work 'Midnight's Last Charge'. This art competition was a great opportunity for me to learn new things. - Anna Ngo

SA Knockout Badminton ChampionshipsIt was a chilly morning on Friday 25th August as Cat-Thy Bui, Anna Nguon, Rachel Nguon and Ashley Castigo went through warm ups for the State KO Badminton Finals at Lockleys State Badminton Centre. In the morning’s round robin competi t ion, the gir ls continued their winning form from the preliminary finals and dominated with strong performances against stiff opposition from Glenunga International High School, Immanuel College and Booleroo Centre District School. In the afternoon, the playoffs for 1st and 2nd took place. The girls were hesitant initially, but they were able to overcome their initial nervousness and return to their natural form. The games were close, but in the end, St Dominic’s triumphed 6-2 to become the State’s best. A marvellous effort by all of the girls, with some amazing rallies. Many thanks must also go to Thien Bui the Open Girl’s Coach for his guidance throughout the semester. Dr Hill
