We say,“Good luck!” to the four House captains; Aquinas, Edwina O’Leary; Columba, Emma Holmes; Guzman, Lara Bassanese; and Siena, Georgia Musolino, with their Vice Captains and Primary Captains for Sunday’s Sports. Our best wishes to all members of the four teams as they enjoy the day and give their team full support. For a number of you, as new parents, there are some aspects of the day which are particular to St. Dominic’s. The day has a picnic atmosphere but it is also a day when there are expectations of your daughters in terms of spirit and discipline. It is a good idea to use this Bulletin as your checklist of things to remember: For all of us this year is the first ever at Immanuel College Morphett Road Novar Gardens. We are extremely grateful for the generous hospitality they have extended to us. We believe that shade for spectators would be helped with the addition of a Golf umbrella if you have one. The House March begins on the dot of 9:00am so please be on time no later than 8:45am. Uniform, complete with hair ribbon, and sports shoes with socks pulled up. The sun will be shining and so the oft repeated message about remembering hats, sunscreen and water will be important. Primary Newsfrom Ms. Cate O’Leary, Primary School Coordinator

MYPParentInformationEveningLast Wednesday, we held a bilingual parent information evening for all parents new to the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. It was great to see so many families come along to hear about the curriculum we offer in Years 6 to 10. Topics that were covered included: inquiry based learning; conceptual understanding; learning support; assessment and reporting . All parents with daughters in Years 6-10 are encouraged to peruse the International Baccalaureate website http://www.ibo.org/ for further information. You will also find the slide show from the evening on the College website: http://stdo.ms/1SDTnQn

SportsDay:This week it will be sport, sport and more sport. The girls are all geared up and excited about Sports Day. Whether it is practicing ball game activities, or watching the Reception/Yr 1 and 2 class get down and ‘funky’ with their dance or listening to the Year 5 cheers, there will be a buzz of activity around the school this week as all our girls are actively involved in all aspects of the day. It is a wonderful community event and we are very grateful to all our parents who support us and their daughters on this special day. Please be mindful of travelling time to our new venue particularly because Anzac Highway will be closed due to the Bay/City event. Just a reminder that Raffle Books will need to be returned as soon as possible.

UrgentnoticerePARKING.Parking and leaving your car in the Kiss & Drop Zone between 8:00am - 9:00am / 3:00pm - 4:00pm is UNACCEPTABLE. Many parents are trying to get to work and are unable to use the facility because of illegal parking.

SaintPatrick’sDay.Topofthemorningtoyou!-There will be a touch of the Irish on Thursday and Friday this week. Please remember that whilst Saint Patrick’s Day is on the 17th, our dress up and activity day will be on Friday the 18th. Girls are asked to give a $2 donation for Project Compassion to wear something green and have a Jelly and snake treat. There will be a writing competition, potato investigations with our buddy classes to develop our problem solving skills and listening to Irish stories.

Numeracy:Last Friday morning Deb Osborne ran a parent workshop on Counting and Addition for Reception and Year 1 parents. The session was well represented and received positive feedback. If you were unable to attend the workshop you might like to have a look in the Primary foyer on the Parent Information stand and take a copy of the two articles. ‘Awesome Maths you can do in your Normal Life’ and ‘Mathematics at Home, Having Fun While Learning’.

DramaToolbox-BodyInvestigators:Last Thursday our Reception to Year 3 classes were involved in an interactive performance based on having a healthy lifestyle. There were many laughs had by all, as the students were shrunk down and travelled through the body of ‘Bazza’ to learn all about healthy lifestyle choices regarding diet, sleep and exercise and the impact these choices have on our body.

First Reconciliation:Please keep the following Year 3 students in your prayers as they made their First Reconciliation in Saint Augustine’s and Rosary Parish this week: Estella Rauda, Alyssa Tran,Charlotte Kretschmer, Annabel and Millie Johnson, Rosie Kelly, Lucy McPeake, Maria LaMontagna, Ai-Vy Truong, Millicent Jacobs, Macy Lapsley, Anna-bella Calabria, Ella and Bree Copeland.

SportsDaySafetyEvery year there is concern about parents and students crossing the track during the races. It poses a great danger to competitors and spectators. Please ONLY cross the track when and where directed by Sports Day Officials.

Dear Parents,

We are looking ahead to Sports Day to be held at Immanuel College Novar Gardens on Sunday, 20 March, for all St Dominic’s students from Reception to Year 12.

Frequent St Dominic’s Sports Day-goers have most of the useful information at their finger tips but it is worth repeating, especially for our newcomers in Reception and Year 8.

The programme commences at 9.00am sharp with the House March competition.

Maps have been printed in last week’s Bulletin, or can be requested via the College Office, showing the location of Immanuel College. Please pay attention to the road closures in place until 10:30am that day.

The Sports Day programme is enclosed with this week’s Bulletin.

Every student needs to have on her sports skirt, coloured house top, house cap, white socks and sandshoes (predominantly white).

All parents are asked to lend a hand - even for just half an hour - on one of the stalls or on the field. You will have a good time. Have you sent in your name yet?

Again this week we are asking parents of students needing assistance with transport to Novar Gardens to let us know via the reply slip on the back page.

The raffle books were sent home last week and have some excellent prizes. We ask you to support it strongly. The proceeds go to St Dominic’s Sport and PE programme.

New parents should note that in recognition of the tremendous community effort put into Sports Day lessons start on Monday 21 March at 10.50am.

TheCarlyRyanFoundationIn our attempts to educate our community about online safety and being cyber smart, we have for the past four years, been fortunate to have Sonya Ryan address both Year 9 parents and Year 9 students in separate visits, each time with an aim to encourage all of us to be safe users of the internet. Sonya’s cause has arisen out of tragedy, but she has a very important vision for all of us. For the past eight years, she has dedicated herself to the promotion of internet safety through the Carly Ryan Foundation established in memory of her daughter Carly, who was murdered by an online predator in 2007. In 2013 she was awarded Australian of the Year. More insight into her work can be found on the Carly Ryan Foundation website: http://www.carlyryanfoundation.com/

Sonya has made available to us two documents. One is a contract which encourages parents to discuss with their children, appropriate internet use: http://stdo.ms/1SEoDin. The other document is a 1 Week Challenge for families to undertake together: http://stdo.ms/227lp9u. This challenge requires placing all devices, iPads, and mobile phones on charge, on flight mode or do not disturb mode from 9pm until 7am for seven days in a neutral room of the home such as a kitchen or laundry. Participants must not check their devices at any time during the night. Devices can be reclaimed at 7am each morning.

When Sonya visited the Year 9 cohort last week she encouraged the girls to take this challenge with their families. Year 9 class teachers will have a hardcopy of the challenge available if they wish to take part, and there are even prizes that Sonya will provide for those who complete the challenge.

Josie Revesz, Year 9 Coordinator

SeniorDramaFestival and Fringe season always provides our senior students with opportunities to attend a variety of theatrical productions. This year we have been fortunate enough to attend three very diverse pieces that challenged the usual conventions of theatre. Macbeth was performed within a World War One bunker, complete with sand-bagged walls, a dirt floor and explosions from the war front above us. Deluge was an experimental piece set in a disused warehouse in Brompton where five stories ran concurrently with the cast performing in a perspex box filled with foam, and lastly we saw The Young King, a fairy tale based on a short

story by Oscar Wilde. As a group we were escorted up to the old Dazzleland fun park in the Myer Centre, made to create our own crown and essentially became one of the Royal subjects within the story. The girls have thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

St Dominic’s Priory College

News from Year 12Significant events in the life of St Dominic’s punctuate the rigour and routine of school life for Year 12 students, and in a sense, take on added meaning given the extra roles the senior students play or simply because it’s the ‘last time’. Recent events include Field Day and the Investiture Mass. Soon to come will be Sports Day and early next term, Gala Day. The Year 12 PC team make a special point of encouraging the senior girls to involve themselves wholeheartedly in these events and see them as complementary to their academic pursuits. For some girls, whose strongest talents lie outside of the classroom, these events represent their time to shine.

PASTORAL CARE: TERM ONE ‘STOCK TAKE’In Pastoral care recently I made a presentation to the girls that took the form of a ‘Term 1 Stocktake’. In essence, I posed a series of question to the Year 12 students. The aim was to get them to reflect on where they were at after the first six weeks of Year 12. I asked them to find the ‘good’ in what they were doing, as well as to be mature enough to acknowledge areas for improvement and to perhaps ‘recalibrate’ where necessary.• SOCIALLYAT SCHOOL: how were they presenting

themselves to staff and peers? What were their actions and attitudes saying about themselves?

• ACADEMICALLY: Were they up to date? Were they seeking help when needed? Were the expectations held by themselves and others both ambitious and realistic?

• AWAYFROMSCHOOL: Did they have a study spot for uninterrupted work? How was their relationship with other family members going? Were outside interests [eg employment, sport, hobbies, social events] being given too little or great a priority in achieving a balanced life?

WHAT DETERMINES HOW SUCCESSFUL A STUDENT IS ACADEMICALLY?

Pastoral Care in Wk 6 featured the first of three seminar presentations by Kirrilie Smout. Kirrilie is an Education Psychologist of note and is the Director of Developing Minds Psychology and Education. The Year 12 girls will receive their Term One reports in a few short weeks. The mention of reports naturally evokes hopes for success or fears of otherwise. The Yr 12s are more aware than ever of the significance and finality of all their results this year. With this in mind, I’d like to draw attention to assertions made by Kirrilie Smout recently. Kirrilie challenges the myth that school results are inexorably linked to ‘how smart’ a person is. Research demonstrates

factors. Thus we encourage all our Yr 12s to access the supports available. The rewards will follow.

To aid the girls in their quest for personal excellence, some strategies and skills have been presented to them by Kirrilie to help them to be motivated, organised and energized in the first place.1. Assume you will forget things: it’s impossible to remember

every deadline, timeframe or requirement. Effective use of the College planner will reduce the need to remember things and thus reduce stress.

2. Minimise distractions: identify those things that are ‘distracters’ and make them just that bit harder to access. Don’t rely on will power alone; make it harder to access the distractions in the first place.

3. Chunk: break large, imposing, intimidating tasks into smaller achievable ‘bits’.

4. Daydream: remind yourself why you are undertaking Year 12 in the first place and the doors a great ATAR can open up. Get the crystal ball out and look into the future, just before Christmas 2016 when final results are published. Imagine the joy of discovering your ATAR is higher than you’d anticipated, all that work back early in the year has paid off. Conversely, imagine the disappointment of knowing, deep down, that the ATAR you ended up with could have been better, if only...

University is not the destination of choice in 2017 for all students, but the principle of every girl achieving her personal best remains the same.Kirrilie’s website can be found at http://www.developingminds.net.au/ where current thinking and research is on offer. Additionally, part of the programme run by Kirrilie is giving the girls the opportunity to personally email Kirrilie. I know a number of girls do this each year and are glad they did.

Year 12 Assessment: Now that ground work has been laid in all subjects, assessment will become an increasingly regular addition to the girls’ workloads. Parents or the girls themselves are encouraged to speak to subject teachers if factors that might inhibit meeting deadlines arise. The Assessment Policy at St Dominic’s is underpinned by both compassion for the individual and fairness for all.A week by week calendar of Year 12 assessment dates is made available to staff and students. This is aimed to aid the Yr 12 girls and their teachers in their planning for and organisation around deadlines. The calendar is accessible to students and parents at home online. At the Parent Information evening I emphasised the importance of communication between school and home. I would like to take this opportunity to encourage all parents to contact subject teachers, class teachers or myself should you wish to discuss a matter, raise an issue or simply to get a quick update. There is no need to wait for Parent–Teacher Interviews; they are still several weeks away. In Year 12 we always welcome communication from parents at any point the need is felt.

Greg Larwood, Yr 12 Coordinator / SACE [email protected]

H o w “ S m a r t ” you are

that a student’s results are only 30% determined by IQ or ‘intelligence’. What students actually do is far more significant, contributing 70% towards a person’s results.Behaviours and actions are far larger determinants of success than innate skills and abilities. This can be a confronting scenario for students, but it needn’t be.

The key point is that students have a huge say in their ultimate academic success regardless of real or imagined inhibiting

Year12TourismvisittoFlindersRangesBags loaded on to the vehicles… 11 Tourism students awake and eager to get underway… and Sr Mary-Anne waving us goodbye. The Year 12 Tourism Class departed on the 7-hour journey to Rawnsley Park Station in the Central Flinders Ranges. After several stops and the temperature rising to 41 degrees, the intrepid group arrived at the base of Rawnsley Bluff, Wilpena Pound Range, to a thunderous welcome with lightning flashes adding a touch of the spectacular!

We spent time travelling around the Station and touring the local area, each student taking lots of photos and notes in preparation for their study report. An early morning scenic drive to be surrounded by kangaroos eyeing us off from roadside grazing spots meant there was no sleep-in on Saturday. Breakfast on return, followed by a journey to an indigenous tourism spot, Sacred Canyon. With temperatures already rising, it was time for a siesta-style interlude in air-conditioned units.

Saturday evening saw us enjoying the Tourism Dinner at the Woolshed Restaurant, specially prepared for us by Chef Andrew. Later, a night excursion to the star-gazing spot – except Mr. Curran missed the turning! An hour or so later,

we survived our ‘lost’ ordeal and returned to our accommodation.

Sunday was the Wilpena Pound visit to hike into the inner Pound and tramp up to a lookout. Still hot and getting hotter. Later, a round-trip journey to drive into the gorges and go back in geological time. All the time, we listened to other travellers’ voices trying to work out their background. So many crazy Europeans up there in this heat, escaping their winter (they told us!). Did you know that 75% of visitors to the Flinders are Europeans at this time of the year?

Monday and we are loading up to return home; girls are ready in record time. On the road, again. Outskirts of Adelaide and traffic and traffic lights. Finally, back at School and it’s back to ‘reality’.
