Mots de la Directrice

Nous célébrons cette année le 25e anni-versaire de notre Clinique juridique bilin-que. La Clinique a été incorporée après la mise en force de la Loi de 1986 sur les ser-

vices en français. The French Language Services Act (1986)

(FLSA) guarantees an individual's right to

receive services in French from Govern-

ment of Ontario ministries and agencies in 25 designated areas. It helps to en-sure the viability of the French language in areas which have at least 4% of the population identified as francophone.

My career as Executive Director at our clinic began in October, 1997. It is now July 2012, almost 15 years later. Last year, my family and I decided to take a vacation to Disneyworld. We were all excited to go since it was the middle of winter in Windsor, Ontario; but in Orlando, Florida, it was in the mid 80’s. However, we were afraid of one thing. It was not the plane flight or clearing airport security or yet even worse, having no room service at the hotel. Anyone who knows me knows that my definition of roughing it is no room ser-vice. It was the dreaded bed bugs. These little noc-turnal bugs are becoming an epidemic across North America especially in ho-tels. A common misconception is that only poor people can get bed bugs. The truth is that those critters are equal opportunists and they do not discriminate between the rich and poor. Not only are they a nui-sance in hotels, but also

from many other places that you least expect. For instance, they can latch onto you while enjoying a movie in a theatre or sitting in a restaurant indulging in fine dining. Bed bugs can also attach to your clothes without you noticing. So you need to take precau-tions to prevent an infesta-tion in your home. When traveling, I always put my suitcase in the bath tub when I first enter my room. It is easier to detect bed bugs in the tub be-cause the tub is normally white. The next thing I check is the bed, I lift all of the blankets and I look at the mattress to see if I can spot any red or black pin like marks. These marks are an indicator that bed bugs are present or were pre-sent at one time. I check all round the edges of the bed. If I do not see any spots, I still keep my suit-case in the bath tub and my

clothes in the suitcase. I never take out my clothes and put them in the draw-ers. If you suspect that there is (or were) bed bugs in your room, then ask for another room and repeat the same inspection in the new room. Upon returning from vacation, I always keep my suitcase in the ga-rage and take my clothes (including the clothes that I am wearing) and put them in a clear plastic bag and they go directly into the washing machine. I also take the same precautions after having been out to the movies or restaurants. The best protection from bed bugs is to take precau-tions and to use common sense. Remember, anyone can catch bed bugs. So the next time someone says : “Don’t let the bed bugs bite!”, you can be sure that they won’t.

The workshops ranged from advocacy to bedbugs (not in the hotel, just in discussion) and from collection agencies to social

assistance, as the conference committee managed to tie it all together with a great selection of speakers and exciting topics. The challenge was having to select which one to attend. The one in particular that had clinic members buzzing, was the Effective Time Management session. It did not highlight the anticipated “work management” strategies but rather emphasized “life management” skills. Makes sense, doesn’t it? M a n a g i n g y o u r l i f e. Many of us be-come tethered behind our workload setting the course for disappointment and frustration. The key is to compartmen-talize!! (Say THAT five times fast). “Point finale”... Make your workload only a part of the picture rather than the entire picture, to allow for a little leisure time. Think of it as “saving room for dessert” so to speak. I am reminded of an email I received a while ago which puts it all into perspective.

A speaker at a stress management conference raised a glass of water and asked her audience how heavy they thought it was. In sum-

mary...it doesn’t matter. “What matters”, she said, “is how long you hold it”. Like stress, the longer you carry it around with you, the

heavier it becomes. Her message was to put all of your burdens down and don’t carry them through the evening, on into the night.

Pick them back up tomorrow and they will be easier to manage.

So I did just that. I went home, put my burdens down and my feet up with a glass of wine and a book...I must say… I felt fifty shades lighter!

Workshops

Southwest Legal Clinics

Our annual Spring Conference held in London, Ontario in April

was another great success with the attendance of approxi-mately 20 clinics from our region. Professional development training and workshops were not the only items on our agenda. We also managed to squeeze in some entertainment in the mix. The dancing, the singing and the laughter... ...had Hamilton by the “seat” of their pants!

Agricultural Workers’ Alliance (AWA) Centre celebrates 10th Anniversary in Leamington

It was estimated that more than 400

migrant and domestic agricultural

workers were in attendance at the

10th Anniversary celebration of the

very first Agricultural Workers’ Alliance

(AWA) in Leamington, Ontario.

Tammy Pelchat from our office and I

joined in the festivities on Sunday, May

27, 2012 which included a BBQ, live

music and the unveiling of the new

mural displayed along side the AWA

building.

The United Food and Commercial

Workers union, established an out-

reach program for migrant workers in

Canada called the Caravan Project.

Ten years ago, they established their

first permanent home in Leamington.

Since then, the project has developed

into the Agricultural Workers’ Alliance

with similar centres, totalling ten,

across Canada. In Ontario, the four

centres include the regions of Leam-

ington, Simcoe, Virgil and Bradford.

The ceremony commenced with an

official anniversary welcoming recep-

tion and speeches from Father Frank

Murphy, former Pastor of St.Michael’s

Church, Stan Raper, AWA National

Coordinator and Wayne Hanley, Na-

tional President of UFCW Canada.

According to a report published by the

UFCW in 2011, it was noted that last

year alone, the centres handled over

35,000 requests for AWA assistance

and advocacy.

In the last several years, our clinic has

maintained a close working relation-

ship with the Centre and its members

providing various workshops and eve-

ning appointments to accommodate

workers with their legal questions and

concerns. We were honoured to have

been included in the ribbon cutting

ceremony along side several commu-

nity activists, AWA and UFCW staff

members and volunteers. In his

speech, Stan Raper, the AWA’s na-

tional coordinator stated that: “We got

together as a group of people here, as

a community, to help. This is a group

that helped to open the first Canadian

agriculture workers support centre in

history. We hope to be here another

ten years because we think there’s still

a lot of work to do”.

“Over the past decade, the Leaming-

ton AWA centre has become an in-

valuable resource and friend to the

thousands of agriculture workers who

work each season in the Leamington,

Essex County, and Chatham-Kent ar-

eas”, according to Wayne Hanley, Na-

tional President of UFCW Canada.

Artist Liya, is shown here putting the finishing

touches on her exquisite mural depicting strength

and honour in the hard working hands of migrant

workers who are seen regularly but often

overlooked.

THANK YOU to Elizabeth Strutt-MacLeod, Coordinator of the Paralegal and

Community Justice Service Program and to all of the students from the St. Clair College Paralegal Program who assisted our clinic in providing free services to our community. We look forward to seeing you in the fall.

On voit dans la photo ci-dessous, notre Directrice générale, Jessie Iwasiw avec l’une de nos ancienne stagiaire, Anita Goela. Anita, one of our former articling students, will be called to the bar in 2012. Congratulations Anita!
