High Holy Days Message from Rabbi Shpeen

Ours is a world that is constantly changing. The newesttechnology soon seems out of date as we live in a societywhere everything is measured in quick, succinct soundbites. The events that shape our nation and the world bringnew challenges and new concerns. In recent months, fromthe turbulence in the Middle East and the situation withIran, continued anti-Semitism in Europe, violence andcivil unrest in cities and towns across the country, nothingseems to stay the same. As much as we think we are progressing as a society and in the world, with every stepforward, there seems to be a step backwards as well.

Yet, it is comforting and reassuring that some things remain ever constant and serve as an anchor in our lives. Each and every year, on the first of Tishrei, Jews around theworld welcome Rosh Hashanah and the beginning of theHigh Holy Day Season. For so many of us, coming to Temple provides a familiarity that allows us to truly openour hearts to the spiritual opportunities of this special timeof the year. The liturgy, many of the musical selections, thesounding of the Shofar, the passages read from the Torahall remain fairly constant. The only noticeable changeeach year, which evokes numerable comments, is the

temperature level in the Sanctuary and Great Hall!

Even as so much of our High Holy Day experience is fairlypredictable, the difference each year is that WE are not thesame. We have changed. Because our lives are everchanging in a world that is ever changing, the stability andthe consistency of the messages we hear and the emotionswe experience during the High Holy Days can, indeed, help us sort out all of these changes and to chart our pathfor the coming year.

So, as we will soon gather together as a congregationalfamily, it is my hope and my prayer that the age old messages of this season will resonate once again, perhapseven anew, for each and every one of us. May all that weshare and all that we experience serve to enrich our lives, offer the anchor we often need and to encourage our ownspiritual journey down the path of life we are traveling,

whatever the challenges presented along the way.

From my home to yours, warm wishes for a Shanah Tovau’metookah…a happy, healthy and sweet New Year for all!

Rabbi Scott Shpeen

Ritual Committee

The High Holy Days offer each of you an opportunity to reflect onthe year just past and focus on your goals for the year ahead. Lastyear, a new service was introduced on Yom Kippur afternoon toassist you in contemplating hope, faith and renewal towards yourphysical and spiritual well-being.

While some may feel this service is geared towards those in needof healing, the newly written service includes readings, medita-tions, and music to reach individuals who face a variety of situa-tions in their lives.

From my family to yours, I wish you a very happy and healthyNew Year.

Kathy’s Comments

My mom died 9 years ago on July 22, 2006. She was anexceptionally wonderful person, as was my dad, and Ithink about my parents almost every day. When mymother died, my siblings and I all belonged to differentcongregations in Albany. It was important to each one ofus to establish a perpetual memorial at each of our syna-gogues in her memory.

When a perpetual memorial is established at CBE, aplaque is ordered with your loved one's name on it andhung during the week of their yahrzeit; a reminder is alsosent to all family members as to which Friday night tocome and say Kaddish Each year on the anniversary oftheir death, into perpetuity, your loved one's name is recited during Friday night services, Saturday morningTorah study and during a bar or bat mitzvah service. Thisis why it is called a perpetual memorial.

By establishing perpetual memorials, we honor our lovedones’ memories. It is our way, the Jewish people’s way, ofremembering; of making sure that even when we aregone, the names of those that were important to and lovedby us will not go unheard.

Wishing you a very happy and healthy new year,Kathy Golderman, Executive [email protected]

Happy New Year and welcome to our re-designed Bulletin! The old design served us well for many years but, yes, it was time for a change. The new layout, updatedgraphics and many color photographs signify our commit-ment to communicate more effectively with you and toshare the many exciting things happening at Beth Emeth.

As we begin the new year, we reflect on the past year andconsider our personal accomplishments as well as whatwe could have done better. This is important for us bothindividually and as a Jewish community, which is why theofficers and the board are in the process of determiningwhat has worked and what needs improving.

One year later, we have succeeded on some of our objec-tives but need to do better on others. We now measureBoard outreach to the congregation and have initiatedover a thousand conversations – big and small -- withcongregants. We have scores of new members; we meetone-on-one with the B’nai Mitzvah students; and The Renaissance Group is up and running. We still have muchto do in order to determine how people feel about theirBeth Emeth experiences. As we start the new year, we re-dedicate ourselves to making Beth Emeth even moremeaningful to you. Please join us in this endeavor.

Happy fall from the Social Action Network. Most of the action thissummer has taken place on Diane’sFarm. Barry Kogan has, once again, provided the overall leadership and communication regardingthe garden. Mark Warford has been our operations chief provid-

ing us with the gardening expertise and vision for our garden.

Stu Madnick has been a constant volunteer throughout the summer and he felt lonely a bit of the time. In July, 20 volunteersgathered with Rabbi Shpeen for a garden blessing followed by garden work. Lee Rosen has become a garden enthusiast over thesummer and spent many hours helping. I also want to applaudRichard Goldstein for his time and effort. Diane’s Farm is tendedby just a handful of people.

Picked this summer has been a load of green beans, tomatoes, zucchini, lettuce, and garlic.  We have provided fresh produce tothe Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless and City Mission. We

also have used our fresh vegetables in our Soup Kitchen.

Next article will focus on advocacy and education.  Thanks forcaring.

Brotherhood

When I stop to think about all we’ve done this summer it’s

spectacular!

We started out the summer placing flags on the graves of the240+ War Veterans interred in the CBE Cemetery just before Memorial Day. Two of my kids and two friends, along with the20+ volunteers who helped with this mitzvah, found a sense ofpurpose and enjoyment. We are so fortunate to have had somany volunteers for this event – thank you all.

Two weeks later our Brotherhood members were the featuredchefs at Summer Cuisine. They enjoyed cooking up a storm ofsliders and manning a turkey carving station! What a great

evening of summer food and entertainment!

The following weekend my wife and I enjoyed cruising down theHudson, drinking mimosas and enjoying great food aboard theCaptain JP with a great turnout of hungry Brotherhood members, their wives, kids and a few friends. What a glorious afternoon the

28 of us had!

Take the Brotherhood out to a ball game for $6 including a hotdog and soda and what happens – they bring their families and all 36 of us had a great time! Seeing the Valley Cats

win in extra innings capped off a beautiful day.

A couple of weeks later, 40+ people attended our Park Playhouseevent despite the date change. Other events of the summer include the TRG BBQ Cookout, white water rafting, picnic at theSaratoga Race Track, Take Me Out to the Races and much, muchmore!!

Einhorn Center for Jewish Education

There’s an old joke - Why are Jewish holiday celebrations always so crazy? Well now, because we arelunar-tics.

The Hebrew calendar, along with the timing of our Jewishholidays to moon phases, is fascinating. The seasonal andlunar wisdom of ancient times is brilliant and under appreciated. For example, on Yom Kippur, the moon

zeniths at the end of the fast.Much of our practice is tied to the moon, and yet, Judaismactually uses a lunar/solar calendar system. We measuretime by the sun- seconds, minutes, hours, days, years, birthdays, deaths, and Shabbat - yet our months and

holidays are set to the moon phases.

It takes 29.5 days for the moon to complete its cycle. Judaism has various practices for each of the stages. The New Moon (moon is not visibly illuminated): Rosh Chodesh In rabbinic times, a court of rabbinicjudges sat in Jerusalem, witnesses came to the court everymonth to announce that they had seen the new moon, and Jews lit bonfires on the mountains to announce its arrival. Today Rosh Chodesh remains a minor holiday, often celebrated by women’s groups. Rosh Hashanah, thenew year and festival of the rebirth of the world, falls onthe new moon. The Waxing Moon: Kiddush Levanah The waxing moon ismarked by its own special blessing, Birkat or Kiddush Levanah, which is recited out in nature looking up andmarveling at the partially illuminate moon. Yom Kippur,

HHD Childrens ProgrammingNancy and Eric Yaffee are once again honored to underwrite theHigh Holy Day Childrens Program this year. This program is ofparticular interest and resonates as their own grandchildren, while visiting for the holidays, have often enjoyed this opportunitythat Temple offers for our childrenand youth. We are most gratefulfor their continued generosity.

the holiday of growth and change as well as Shavuot, theholiday celebrating the spring harvest and the revelationof Torah fall at the waxing moon. The Full Moon: Keseh The fifteenth of the Hebrew monthis the full moon. Keseh is like the word Kos (cup) and thefull moon is indeed like a cup overflowing. Many of ourfestivals of freedom and abundance, such as Sukkot, Tu B’Shevat, Purim, and Passover, fall on the full moon. The Waning Moon: Birkat haChodesh The waning moonis marked with a special prayer recited on the Shabbat before the new moon. Holidays that fall during the waningdays include Shemini Atzeret/Simchat Torah, andChanukah.

As we approach the High Holy Days, take a moment tolook outside at the moon, and appreciate how incrediblethis ancient calendar truly is.

CBEYG

I was skeptical about attending CBEYG. When I was younger, Ihad teased my older cousins about their active involvement intheir youth groups, and I had even vowed to never become thatinvolved in mine. Thankfully, I didn’t keep this pledge and

decided to attend CBEYG anyway.

Every week, as I got more and more comfortable around my newfriends, my affection for CBEYG grew. Very quickly, I felt like I belonged. No matter what you do for the other 166 and a halfhours in a week, you always have a place on Wednesday nightsfrom 5:30 to 7:00 pm. CBEYG is always a safe place, whereeveryone is included and where you can get away from thestresses of school and just relax with your friends.
