From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners: In his letter promulgating the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis wrote:

The season of Lent during this Jubilee Year should also be lived more intensely as a privileged moment to celebrate and experience God’s mercy. How many pages of Sacred Scripture are appropriate for meditation during the weeks of Lent to help us rediscover the merciful face of the Father.

Ash Wednesday falls this week. It is the beginning of this privileged time. In our bulletin we have inserted a tri-fold that provides the schedule of services and other opportunities we are offering so that this season might indeed be “lived more intensely.” I hope you will review it and mark your calendars to join in the various activities that are scheduled. Do not let this precious time pass without responding to the Church’s invitation to unite ourselves more closely to the Lord as we journey toward the commemoration of this passion, death, and resurrection. With affection, Msgr. Gervasio

Msgr. Gervasio Liturgical Lines….The Season of Lent

The word Lent derives from the Old English word, Lenten meaning spring. It is a period of forty days that runs from Ash Wednesday until the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday. During this time, catechumens are prepared for Baptism and Confirmation, celebrated at the Easter Vigil. During Lent various rites are carried out to prepare the catechumens for their sacramental initiation. It is also a time when the faithful devote themselves to prayer and repentance and the renewal of their baptismal promises. Lent is so important that the memorials of saints during the season are observed as optional. Its penitential nature is observed in the following:

Fridays are days of abstinence from meat. Ash Wednesday & Good Friday are days of

fasting and abstinence. The vestments worn by the priest and deacon

are violet in color. The Gloria of the Mass is omitted. “Alleluia” is not sung. The organ is not played except to support

singing if needed. Flowers do not decorate the sanctuary. Weddings are to refrain from too much pomp

and display.

Effective Monday, February 8

For the convenience of our parishioners and visitors, our parish office will remain open during the lunch

hour (Mon-Fri). Our revised hours are:

Monday-Thursday 9:00 a.m. through 8:00 p.m.

Friday 9:00 a.m. through 4:30 p.m.

Saturday 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

The Storm’s Effect

Blizzard Jonah took a tremendous toll on the eastern seaboard. A number of people suffered and tragically there were instances of lives lost. Most of us struggled with the frustration of shoveling and plowing and just being able to have the provisions we need at home until the storm ended. I am grateful to all for being prudent and cautious about their movements and realizing that in such circumstances, the obligation to assist at Mass is abrogated. I am grateful to our snow removal companies at both our campuses as well as our buildings and grounds supervisor, Phil Carlini, for the great job they did to keep our grounds cleared and as safe as possible in such overwhelming circumstances. This work is necessary and indeed has an impact on our budget and the loss of a weekend’s income compounds the issue. Winter is hardly over and so I renew my call to everyone to be prudent on snowy and icy days and to remember that there is no obligation to assist at Mass if doing so might be hazardous. Safety is a priority!

OLS-SA Boys Varsity Soccer Coach The OLS-SA Sports Committee is looking for a volunteer boys varsity (5th to 8th grade) soccer coach for the 2016 CYO spring soccer season.

Please contact OLS-SA athletic director, Romeo Laurente (937-4212; [email protected].

“Remember, man, you are dust And to dust you will return.”

The penitential season of Lent begins on February 10. This is the last weekend to bring in old palms to be burned and used for ashes on Ash Wednesday. There are containers at all the exit doors of both

churches to hold the palms.

Scout Sunday The Boy Scouts of America annually celebrates its founding on February 8, 1910, based on the program started by Lord Baden Powell in England on August 1, 1907. Scout Sunday was added to the Scout celebration in the middle 1940s. Scout Sunday is always the Sunday proceeding February 8th, unless the 8th is a Sunday, in which case the 8th would be Scout Sunday. The Saturday following February 8th is Scout Sabbath. The Scout Sunday tradition was started to make people in houses of worship aware of Scouting, and to allow Scouts to live out their "Duty to God" pledged each week. The Scout Law says that a "Scout is Reverent" and the Scouts of all ages promise to do their "Duty to God". These values strengthen youth character in their family, community and faith. Here at Our Lady of Sorrows - St. Anthony, and going back in history at OLS, Scouts have traditionally celebrated Scout Sunday by coming together at mass. This year, as in each year since our parish merger, Cub Scout Pack 38 and Boy Scout Troop 38 will join together on Sunday, February 7, at the 11:00 a.m. Mass at OLS. Other parish members who are Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, or Venture Crew members in other units are welcome to join us in uniform for our celebration at mass. If you would like more information about our Cub Scout Pack (grades 1-5) or our Boy Scout Troop (Grades 5-12) please visit our Pack website at http://www.pack38olssa.org/ or our Troop website at http://www.troop38olssa.org/ or contact our Cubmaster, Damian Bomm (838-2490; [email protected]); our Scoutmaster (Jay Schaeffer (208-1042; [email protected]), or see or contact Deacon Kevin ([email protected]; 577-3494) for either of the groups.

Parish School News Almost too much to fit into a week! Yes, our parish school students are so busy they have difficulty fitting everything into a single week. The OLS School Student Council is busy every day, planning, discussing, and preparing. Under the direction of Mrs. Maureen Tuohy, the children meet regularly and deeply affect the spirit of our school. This week the Student Council gave a PowerPoint presentation to present their proposal for school change. They have taken a serious look at our school uniforms and they have done the research for a new fresh look for the student body. Our Eighth Graders enjoy a "Dress Down" one Friday per month. Joseph Hoffman (pictured at right), an OLS Student Council Officer, elected to model one of the new looks for his Dress Down choice. Jacob Papiez is supporting the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. The private foundation is the largest funder of childhood cancer research grants. Jake, a 13-year-old Eighth Grader at our parish school and a member of the Princeton Youth Hockey Association team is volunteering as a “shavee” for the first time this year. His efforts will support cures for childhood cancer. Our school continues its celebration of 60 Years of Excellence by sharing joy and love with the community. Mrs. Denise Gutierrez, parent of middle school student Jessie, worked with the children to prepare gifts of warmth for the homeless shelter. During the month of January the children stuffed new pairs of donated socks with notes of encouragement (developed in the Computer Lab with Mrs. Milinowitz), packaged snacks, and new handwarmers. Watch for news about the February event! Our days are full, and the children are involved in a complete program. Enjoy the excitement of your parish school. Stop by to visit and see the magic. We are now currently in registration for the 2016-2017 school year. Learn more about how Our Lady of Sorrows School can be a part of your family's life. Tuition is affordable and realistic from scholarship programs as well as financial assitance grants. Tuition assistance applications are available online (olsschool.us) and in the school offices. Wednesday, February 10, is Ash Wednesday. Experience a student liturgy with the children of your parish school. The children of Grade 5 are planning the liturgy with their teachers, Mrs. Costantini and Mrs. Mihalik. Join us at this very special liturgy.

Caring Hearts Report During January, 256 hours of service (e.g., visiting, transportation, shopping, reassurance calls, assistance with paperwork, chores, and housekeeping) were provided by 41 volunteers to 40 persons. Caring Hearts volunteers provide non-medical services to our homebound elderly and disabled neighbors. If you would like more information on joining this satisfying ministry, either as a caregiver or a care receiver, please call Anne at 586-6596.

A Lenten Program of Sacrifice to Provide Clean Sanitation to Families at Fr. Gene’s Parish, Sacred Heart Church in Tamil Nadu, India

Once again this year, Msgr. Gervasio and the Social Justice Committee are happy to announce that our Lenten Work of Mercy will be to help our dear friend, Fr Eugene Savarimuthu, care for the people of his parish. Fr. Gene returned to India after serving the people of OLS-SA for 6 years, and became the pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Sikkalnayaganpet parish, a part of the diocese of Kumbankonam in Tamilnadu, India. Last year, he undertook a major project to build a community center where the people could gather for celebrations, classes, after school programs, health clinics and more. We raised $25,000 and now the community center is 90% complete. Fr Gene tells us that they will formally open and dedicate the community center on the Feast of St. Joseph, March 19. A plaque will commemorate the sacrifices made by the people of OLS-SA to build the center. Already, the center is being used to hold sewing classes for local women, to house the after school program, and to host parish gatherings. All the people of Fr Gene’s parish know the name “Our Lady of Sorrows-St Anthony” and remember us and our intentions in their prayers. Fr Gene’s parish is in a very rural region of India where there are sanitation problems beyond Western imagination. With its 1.25 billion inhabitants, nearly 800 million people in the country live without basic sanitation. Approximately 65% of the people are forced to defecate in the open. Open defecation spreads diseases like cholera and E. coli and contaminates unprotected water sources. It also causes a serious safety problem for the girls and women in the villages. The lack of toilets in their homes exposes women to the risk of being harassed or raped when they rise at night or before dawn in search of a little privacy to attend to their toiletry needs in the fields. Fr. Gene wants to have every home in his parish equipped with a sanitary toilet. His goal is to provide 50 toilets this year. Men and women from each family in the village will contribute their own time, energy, and labor to build their own toilet for their house. He asks our help in providing some of the costs for materials. Fr Gene and members of his parish have framed a construction plan that could be achieved through collaboration of various resources. They plan to buy the construction materials locally. Funding for the project would come from multiple sources: 25% from local government, 25% from the parish, 25% from the individual family, and 25% from our Lenten sacrifices. By providing these toilets, we will be empowering the people of Fr Gene’s parish to better their own lives, to improve their health and especially to provide dignity and safety to the girls and women of the villages. Give up anything you want for Lent—candy, “fast food,” ice cream, cookies. Each week, calculate how much money you saved and bring it to church to put in one of the Lenten Work of Mercy cans at the exits. Pray! Pray for Fr Gene, pray for the people of his parish, and pray that our own hearts will be transformed through our sacrifices.

Fr. Gene at a program for the youth of his parish.
