FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

A?er one of the snowiest Marches on record, spring has finally arrived. The snow and ice have melted, the daylight hours have

increased, and color has started its return to our landscape. This weekend’s Scripture readings give us that feel of spring<me

deep into the Easter Season. The selec<on from the Acts of the Apostles is the account of St. Paul’s arrival in Jerusalem shortly

a?er his drama<c conversion. It is important to recall the background of Paul’s remarkable transforma<on. He was widely

known among Jesus’ disciples to be an ardent prac<<oner of Jewish law and ritual, and had been a fierce persecutor of the early

Chris<an community. He even had par<cipated in the stoning death of Stephen, the Church’s first martyr. But one day on the

road to Damascus, Paul was blinded by the light of the risen Lord’s appearance to him. The voice of the glorified Jesus instructed

Paul to go into Damascus, and follow the instruc<ons of Christ’s disciples there. Ananias, a follower of Jesus, received Paul and

delivered God’s message to him: “You, Paul are a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before Gen<les, kings and

Israelites, and I will show you what you will have to suffer for my name.” Subsequently, Paul was bap<zed; he regained his sight;

and he began to proclaim in the synagogues that Christ was the Son of God. Today’s first reading focuses on Paul’s arrival in

Jerusalem with the inten<on of joining the other disciples. At first, the disciples were very skep<cal of St. Paul’s conversion. But

under the tutelage of Barnabas, Paul convinced them that he was ready to speak boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus. So, a?er

an ini<al winter of hos<lity and opposi<on to the new Chris<an movement, Paul entered a personal spring<me of preaching the

gospel of grace and wri<ng several inspired le9ers focused on the dying and rising of Christ as our redemp<on from sin.

The second reading from the first le9er of St. John gives us a taste of spring in its exhorta<on to love “not in word or speech but

in deed and truth.” This fresh and upbeat text teaches us that if we follow our hearts and our well-formed conscience, if we keep

the commandments and love one another, we will remain in Christ and he will remain in us. The gospel passage for this weekend

is all about the classic spring pas<me of gardening. According to the gospel of St. John, Jesus says: “I am the vine, you are the

branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing…by this is my Father

glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.” This is a beau<ful image of the Church; that as disciples of Jesus we

are all branches a9ached to the vine who is Christ himself. He is the source of our life and nourishment. As long as we live in him

and draw spiritual nutri<on from his word and sacraments, we will bear much fruit in personal holiness and will a9ract others to

Christ. But if we detach ourselves from the vine because of our sin, we will wither and die spiritually. May we enjoy a new spring

season in our rela<onship to Christ and the Church, and stay close to Christ, the Risen Lord, our very life and salva<on!

News and Notes: This weekend, we welcome back Francis Pham, our seminarian in the Collabora<ve for four

years. He was ordained to the Transi<onal Diaconate on April 14 in Lowell, MA, and will serve as Deacon of the 4PM

Mass at OLA on Saturday, April 28. A Pasta Dinner in his honor will take place in the OLA Church Hall a?er that Mass.

Congratula<ons and best wishes to Deacon Francis as he takes the last major step to priesthood!

Next weekend, we will welcome our second-grade children from the Religious Educa<on programs of both parishes

to the table of the Lord to receive their first Holy Communion. Thanks to our Parish Faith Forma<on Coordinators,

Piri Collard (OLA) and Bethany Kilroy (SMG), their assistants Kate McGrath (OLA) and Jamie Bossi (SMG) and all the

second grade catechists in both parishes for their ministry in preparing our children for this spiritual milestone in their

young lives. Let’s pray for these children, their parents and their families; that their regular a9endance at Mass and

frequent recep<on of the Eucharist will help them become commi9ed disciples of Jesus and ac<ve par<cipants in the

mission of his Church.

Here is the latest update on the 2018 Catholic Appeal: As of April 20, SMG donors had pledged $39,255, which is

104% of St. Maria’s goal of $37,832; OLA donors had pledged $49,251, which is 79% of Our Lady’s goal of $62,343.

Many thanks go out to all who have contributed to the annual Catholic Appeal thus far. If you have not yet made a

pledge, please do as soon as possible. This year, all paid pledges over a parish’s fair-share assessment will bring about

50% of the excess funds back to that parish. Pledge cards are available at the entrances of both churches. You can

also donate online at www.bostoncatholicappeal.org. Let’s keep up this amazing start to the 2018 Appeal…and

blessings to all of you in the week ahead!
