PAGE TWO TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 30, 2015
School begins tomorrow, Monday, August 31, for our parish academy students. It is a great joy to see our chil-dren return from summer
vacation and begin participating in various activi-ties such as serving at the altar. I thank you, our wonderful and generous parishioners/parents for your prayers and ongoing support for our Acade-my. I also thank the teachers for their dedicated service. The Knights of Columbus will also launch a new program to foster greater devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and to strengthen the faith of its members, their families and others in the parish community. Therefore, beginning Sunday, August 30, 2015, the Knights of Columbus will lead the Rosary in the church following the 8:00 am Mass. Thereafter, every month that has a 5th Sunday the rosary will be held in the church at the same time. As I thank the members of the Knights of Colum-bus, I encourage you to use this opportunity to deepen your relationship with the Blessed Virgin Mary. The readings this week explain the meaning of true religion. It is not simply a scrupulous, exter-nal observance of rules, laws, traditions, and ritu-als. Rather, it is fostering a loving, obedient rela-
tionship with God, who is love, which must be ex-pressed in our obedience to His Commandments, by worshipping Him, recognizing His presence in our brothers and sisters by rendering them loving and humble service. Prayers, rituals, Sacraments and religious practices are means to worship God and help us to practice this true religion. The first reading explains that religion is a Cove-nantal relationship with God, which is fostered by keeping His Commandments given through Mo-ses. God gave Israel the Law so that the Israelites might keep their Covenant with Yahweh and thank Him for His love and fidelity. The Law was also intended to keep them a united, holy and in-telligent nation, proud of their powerful, protec-tive, and only God. In the second reading, St. James defines true religion as keeping the word of God and doing His will by helping the needy, the poor and the weak in the community. He challeng-es Christians to become doers of the word, not merely hearers. In the Gospel, Jesus describes true religion as serving God and all His children with a pure heart. The Gospel explains Jesus’ encounter with the Sanhedrin observers and the Pharisees who had been sent to assess his unique, controver-sial teachings. These experts had found Jesus’ teachings an open violation of the “Traditions of the Elders,” and His implied

COLLECTION REPORT
Prayer list for our Military
As a faith community, let us keep
all who serve our country during
these troubled times in our pray-
ers. We pray especially for those of our parish who
are serving.
If you have a friend or relative who is serving in our military, and want their name to be added on our prayer list, please con-tact the office at: (619) 463-6629 ext. 102 or via e-mail [email protected]
Names in bold are newly added this week. Also pray for the special intentions written in the Book of Needs in the back of the church.

and spoken claims “blasphemous”. Since the fifth century BC, the scribes started adding oral tradi-tions as interpretations and practical applications of the Mosaic Law, which the Pharisees strictly ob-served and insisted that everyone else should do so. The original noble purpose was to sanctify the dai-ly lives of the people, making them “holy as God is holy.”
Religion helps us grow in holiness and encounter God. Our worship of God, therefore, must make us better people. It is not enough to have external piety. As we know, external piety without internal holiness and moral integrity is hypocrisy. There-fore, keep your heart holy, as it is the source of sins, vices and evil habits. Our worship of God must al-low us to offer our lives to God, to ask His pardon for sins, to thank Him for His blessings and to re-ceive divine life and strength from Him in Holy Communion. Our daily family prayers are meant to thank God for his blessings, to present our needs before God, to ask pardon for sins and to maintain the spirit of unity and love in the family.

Daily Prayer for Priests
O Jesus, I pray for your faithful and fervent priests;
For your unfaithful and tepid priests; For your priests laboring at home or
Abroad in distant mission fields. For your tempted priests;
For your lonely and desolate priests; For your young priests; For your dying priests;
For the souls of your priests in Purgatory.
But above all, I recommend to you The priests dearest to me;
The priest who baptized me; The priests who absolved me from
my sins; The priests at whose Masses I assisted and who gave me
Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion;
The priests who taught and instructed me;
All the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way
(especially……………..….) O Jesus, keep them all close
to your heart, And bless them abundantly
in time and in Eternity
Amen

Praying to Mary, the Angels and Saints
We believe that the church in heaven and the church on earth are united together. As we help one another on earth, those in heaven help us. We pray to Mary the mother of Jesus, the angels and the saints (those who have
reached heaven) in order to ask that they pray with us and for us to God, just as we
would ask one another to pray with us and for us to God. We also sometimes pray in
order to thank them for praying on our behalf, just as we would thank one another.
Mary, the angels and saints have set examples for us to follow and show us how to love
and serve God. Just as we honor and respect modern day heroes and sometimes ask
them for additional help because of their heroism, we likewise honor, respect and ask for
help from Mary, the angels and the saints.

Prayers can be offered at any time of the day or night. We should pray often and al-
ways, when we feel the need or desire to express praise, adoration, thanksgiving or a
request for help.
There are many, many different types and forms of prayers. For instance, we can pray
alone, with others, on bended knee or not. We can use our own words, no words, or re-
cite prayers written by others to help us. There are prayers written specifically for the
help and intercession of particular saints and angels, but the one common element in any
prayer is that it is directed toward God, with a humble and sincere heart.
